Nagy Fa-Tal Etterem is an Hungarian restaurant is the heart of Budapest, in Pest side. The place is super clean and well organized, it has outdoor and indoor seats and tables (id suggest the outside ones especially at night, as there is an amazing wind). The service is very fast and the staff nice and kind, also funny and very pleasant to stay. A plus is the live music, which is played by typical musicians. The food is sooo good, I loved it! Everything had intense flavor and was super tasty, and the menu has a vast choice of dishes that are also suitable for vegans and vegetarian diets. The only reason why I’m not giving 5 starts is the price: I think that, compared to the standard of the Hungarian restaurants, it’s a little high. But I’d strongly suggest to try it Al least once, cause the food quality is amazing! Ps. There is a wonderful drink made with lemonade and raspberry that is a must try, it is perfect with all the particular flavors of that cuisine.

Upon my arrival in Budapest, this the first place my friend, who lives there, took me for lunch. The well-decorated interior offers a cozy atmosphere. The waiters were also very friendly. All the meals we had were local, and my Hungarian friend assured me they were authentically prepared with a traditional taste. I was pleasantly surprised that all the wines were available by the glass. My only concern was the smell from the open kitchen, but we got used to it within a few minutes. This place is quite expensive compared to the local standard. I wouldn't say it's overpriced, but you might consider it as premium.

Came here for the recommendation of this being allegedly “the best Hungarian restaurant in town”. I would say the experience was nice mainly because of the live music everyday. The food was a let down, very bland and expensive. The service was extremely slow (so slow you have no idea). To be honest I wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t recommend.

Typical restaurant in the city center. We tried the famous goulash in the bread: it was good, but not the best in town. You can add spicy paprika as you wish. Local drinks were fine, both beer and wine, even the sweet Tokaji. I apprecieted the local live music during the dinner. We spent 22€ each.

Nice place, nice food, nice atmosphere and very nice traditional Hungarian gypsy music. We specially looked for a restaurant with a Hungarian live music for our marriage anniversary. Very much satisfied with everything. Service was quite professional, food and environment was also quite good. We liked the band very much. They walk around the tables, ask the guests where they come from and play songs of their country. They played a song from our country too. The name of the band is "Norbert Salasovics" We highly recommend this restaurant.

We just came across this lovely restaurant on our first night's stroll. What a great find, atmosphere, service, food, food, and the wonderful group playing music, Norbert Salasovics and his orchestra of 2 violins, a zither(?) and double bass! Waiters Istavan and Norbert gave us excellent service, and we loved our meal of grilled pork rib, and the beef stew with cottage cheese pasta. So hard to choose ! No room for dessert! Reasonable prices !

We really enjoyed this place. We popped in for a beer and the service was great and said we must revisit for dinner which we did. The live music is excellent, good sense of honour and subtle interaction with guests as well. My partner has Goulash which she really enjoyed, I had the gigantic schnitzel, which lives up to its name. A few sides, bottle of wine we’d happily return when we next come to Budapest

Food tasted great. Especially goulash was amaziiiinngg. But expensive place. There was live music. They went through each table and tried to sing depending on where you are from. Was lovely idea. It was Italian based menu mostly. But really everything was tasty and fresh and very homemade. Enjoyed. Although it was expensive😀

Excellent traditional Hungarian food and atmosphere. Everything about food was great, especially the desserts, each day after 18 they have live traditional music. The best of our experience was the nice staff, especially our waiter Pisti who was very friendly, prompt and just great. I would recommend the restaurant anytime for an authentic experience.

What a find! There was a great buzz to the place with live music playing, we even had Vivaldi. Can recommend the Goulash in bread which is accompanied by a fiery sauce if required. Friendly and quick service. We had a great Hungarian evening.

Flavourful and delicious stew and soups. Also ordered the goose liver which was very, very decently portioned. The service was very friendly and efficient but the best part was the live music. The only shame was that the restaurant customers didn't quite seem to appreciate it. Bonus: the musicians take requests!

I will start with positive: staff is super nice ( maybe they red the previous comments...) and speaks English, ready to talk about the menu, recommend wine etc. Kitchen is simple but tasty however ingredients are not top top quality. They play live music, even on Monday, interior is inviting. There is something missing... Hungarian spark maybe?....

(Translated by Google) Tourist supply. Very nice multilingual menu, multilingual hostess, waiters attitude, live music, serving. Hungarian residents should avoid it, because in terms of quality-price is far below any Hungarian restaurant, but for foreigners a good experience. 3dl halleves 2200huf, 5dl Soproni beer 1000 (!) Huf. Unfortunately, the knowledge of a foreign language is not enough for hospitality, it is very unpleasant if the waiter sees simplicity or if the chef runs down the stairs with a cigarette in his mouth to the seated guests. It would be worthwhile to recycle some money and renovate the space because it has a huge impact (illuminated boards, stairs renovation).

Amazing restaurant! Food was very nice and the service was top. They serve a lot of traditional Hungarian dishes, so it's worth the visit if you want some authentic food. The ambiance was also wonderful, as there is a band playing live music.

Trying too hard to be fancy, the result is a not-welcoming restaurant with a low level menu. The food is very expensive and tastes very average. The gulyas is too hot, and tastes ok, but they had the audacity to take more than 8000HUF for a poor plate of beef and cheap disgusting gnocchi. to conclude - the food is okay, but it isnt worth its price tag. a meal for 2 costs almost 20000HUF

Lots of local dish options. Food quality is alright but it was significantly oilier than the other Hungarian dishes I have had here. The red spicy paste which is served alongside is nice. The biggest problem is the prices, the menu on Google Maps is not up to date and currently everything is almost x1.5-x2. As two persons, one main each and one soup/drink each: you are looking at a bill of €70. Except for these, the interior is very nice, cosy and authentic, service people are very kind.

Very nice and clean (!) restaurant. With authentic hungarian food and music. The restaurant is very big with 2 floors and outside. The prices are ok. A little bit expensive. I eat the gulash soup. Not the best gulash I’ve had. My husband ate the sausages with potatoes. It was good and bit salty. The service was very good

Very well located restaurant with delicious traditional Hungarian food. We ate lunch here and chose the gulyas soup and Turos Csusza (pasta with traditional low salted cheese and fried bacon). We also drank some local beer which was very tasty and refreshing. The staff is extremely friendly and polite. Dogs are allowed outside (maybe even inside but we did not ask and are offered a bowl of water from the restaurant. The service is pretty quick. The prices are a bit high but given the location and the quality of the food they offer we would totally recommend checking this place out and giving it a try.

A restaurant with authentic food. I tried the goulash. Unfortunately, there are no separate spaces for smokers and non-smokers, which was a problem for me. I had to change the table, because I couldn't eat while another person smoked at the table next to me😒. And I guess the prices are "spicy".

The experience here from the amazing staff to the mouth watering food is exceptional. We stayed 3 nights in Budapest and came her for 2. If we found this place on the first night I think we would have come here 3 times :D. I cannot recommend this place enough and everything we tried was amazing and very well priced. Live Gypsy music too! What a bonus. The only disappointment was not have more nights to try all their food!

(Translated by Google) I liked live music, but the food, I think, was scandalous. 13% service charge I think is pretty dangerous, the workers are nice, although one of the waiters is interesting, it was hard to pick up what we wanted to eat, even though we showed it on the menu and said it, but as if he didn’t know them, he looked at it 3x. We asked for a very simple condition, but it wasn’t brought out, even though we asked separately not for the food, the second waiter said h wasn’t feasible (?). I asked for goulash soup in loaf, loaf was delicious, there were about 3 potatoes in it, the meat in it was inedible, spicy. 0.75L aqua water 1100ft.

Food was poor and expensive relative to other restaurants of much better quality. We booked well in advance and whilst the restaurant wasn't busy we were shown to a table indoors and right at the back of the restaurant. The entertainment and other clients were all situated at the front of the restaurant and in the open air! Not recommended.

We visited at 21:00. Real Hungarian meal and wonderful music. We ordered fried vegetables, goose liver, beef stew, baked fish, CHILD MEAL and deserts. Price seems very reasonable. Staffs were also very kind. Although our son broke the glass cup, he said it was no problem and just be careful. Even we were stayed there after 22:30 they never show the attitude to chase us out. The music was something. The band played the traditional gypsy (Roma) music with Cimbalom and strings. They were professional and very friendly. I strongly recommend this place and we want to visit here again.

Well.. it's the most expensive diner we've had in Budapest, but certainly not near the best. We were on our way to another restaurant, but we're attracted by the ambiance from the tables outside. So we decided to give it a try, I mean the reviews were pretty good... so when we asked for a table for two inside, then the experience started to decline. We were seated in the middle of the room on a small table next to another couple seated on a more larger table. The restaurant inside was not busy at all. So why seat us there?? I was just too tired to even discuss about it, so we just sat there. Our waiter, perhaps tried his very best to be attentive, but the energy was totally lacking. Then the food... ordered the fisherman's soup, but I had to really fish for the fish. The soup also had some ground fishbone in it, which I don't think should be part of it. The taste is Ok-ish, not something I will order again. Then the pork knuckle, oh so dry.. couldn't finish it, because the portion is huge. So well done for that, I guess that explains the good reviews. My partner had the duck breast, and the goulash. Also just ok-ish dishes... the prices, too high for what you get. 13% table charge, and still expecting a tip?!.. 2* might be too low, but I will give this restaurant 3*. Well done with the marketing!

Service is very welcoming. It has a very nice atmosphere with music and songs. The food is fantastic! Everything on the menu looks good but I think the highlight is the goulash in a bread and the schnitzel. Highly recommended.

We've tried the typical goulash soup and a local beer. It was all good. The waiters treats us we'll, the prices are cheap and the place is cozy.

Fantastic food, great service, polite staff. There was live music, not too loud, good choice. If you want to try a typical Hungarian food and jump into the atmosphere, this is the place. Highly recommend!

The food was tasty and the service was nice and fast. First visit- Tried the bean soup and stuffed cabbage. Both tasted nice. The most interesting part was obviously the size of the Jókai beans! Second visit- Tried the fisherman's soup, which I didn't enjoy. But the pancakes, they were heavenly.

Fantastic place to stay to spend your lunch or dinner. They have big variety of the Hungarian traditional dishes. If you are vegetarian don't be worried because they are serving all type of dishes.

Original place in a central and touristic street. The food is incredibly typical and good, the staff very kind and the atmosphere is lovely and traditional (musicians playing and singing while u are having the typical Hungarian dinner). Good price. Absolutely recommended!

Great place for dinner, very kid friendly. Menus are in the multiple languages which is usually a red flag for a tourist trap but this place has very authentic and delicious food. Very welcoming staff with live Hungarian music. Make a reservation as it gets crowded. Very centrally located.

Avoid Avoid Avoid. Especially if you are a tourist do not go here. They will add service charge, charge for sauces and anything else they can scam onto your receipt. Yes the food is great but the price my god, be prepared to habe to pull the receipt to pieces... And argue... If I were you I'd try anywhere else (Drum Cafe for example amazing food none of the fuss from here) this place should realise if you treated tourists right instead of ripping them off they would come back! Went here in the first night and the bill shocked me, had to go through each part and question it getting scowls and feeling like you were in the wrong but it's simply a tourist trap honestly there are so many better local places than this... The food was good but not amazing as some of the other reviews...

I came here thanks to the advice of the walking tour guide thinking she was giving a glimpse of what locals would do. But it is incredibly overpriced. For one main dish (in the picture) I paid 17 euros which is way beyond the standards. It was tasty but wouldn't come back.

We were only in Budapest a few days but found ourselves coming back over and over. Tperiod the service was great and the food was top notch. We especially appreciated appreciated mark and his service and Szabi. For the service, education and drinks! I highly recommend you try here!

I echo the sentiments of a previous poster - ghastly good, lovely music. I had the duck. The poor thing must've been raised in the Sahara and denied water its whole life cos this was dry as a bone, tasteless ... and way overpriced. But the live Hungarian music was enchanting !

Great menu of Vegan Hungarian food. Tasty and very quick and good service. The prize is the bakery in the entrance that sells all kinds of amazing vegan cakes and confectionaries.

Discovered this great little spot, fantastic straight forward Hungarian food, really good service, and traditional live music gave a great atmosphere.

The food was great, service was quick considering they had a full house. The waiter was very friendly but in a constant rush and brought me the wrong dish. I switched it with my husband so it’s okay. But yeah, the tip tho.. can’t hide it behind the smile. And also, do not make eye contact with the musicians, after that they think you owe them money🤷🏼‍♀️

Husband and I wanted something quick to eat before our flight that was keto friendly. We stumbled by this place walking around and saw their menu with images. A couple of dishes stood out so we decided to eat here. The place is huge. There was outdoor and indoor seating which had two floors. The place was very clean. The place seemed very touristy but that is okay we were pressed for time and options. The staff was friendly and prompt. The food came out quite quickly. Nothing that we ordered was amazing or great. I had the grilled cheese salad which was not really my thing, the cheese was super rubbery. The stuffed cabbage was good and brought out nice and hot but could’ve been more flavourful.

Excellent Hungarian cuisine served in a traditional setting. Very fast and attentive service. Would recommend popping by here for lunch when it’s quieter. In the evenings there is live music and folk dancing.

Passed by this restaurant by chance, thought it was cute and quaint at first glance. Went inside with not too high of expectations and was blown away. This is the real deal Hungarian comfort food. The staff and music were such a treat! Definitely stop by if you want a taste of the Hungarian homeland. And the custard deserts is a must have.

We were very satisfied with our food. Beef stew with gnocchi was delicious and chicken paprikash was also quite good. Both dessert were also good, the vanilla one however was better than the chocolate one, which contains too much sweet cream for my taste. Vanilla dessert was also warm and was better than chocolate one in this regard. The draught IPA beer was great, but they could have better selection of different teas (also the whole menu was multilingual, except the tea section was only in magyar). Live music! In the evening, at around 18.00 a band showed up and they started playing music with violin, contrabass and other similar instruments, which made a nice atmosphere of the place even better. However this place is quite expensive (most expensive that we visited in Budapest so far, we try to visit more affordable options), even though it is listed as less expensive on Google maps. They also charged more than 10% of obligatory tip on the receipt. The place is nice and food is good but you can eat better and cheaper in Budapest. Also I suggest making a reservation here. TLDR: good food, nice atmosphere, live music, price higher then expected

Blast of flavours in every bite of food. This is my first time trying Hungarian food and it’s one of my favourite food now. I highly recommend this place. The service was exceptional and the food was amazing at this place. There was also live music band and it made everything a great experience.

I’ve been here with friends for dinner 12/25/2022. Center located old fashion restaurant that has 2 floors, friendly staff, quick service, good food, big menu. Portions are normal(not small). The only cons is later your cloths, hair smell of goulash.

  • 5/5 Jes C. 1 year ago on Google
Must try restaurant when you want to try some local hungarian food. We had the goulash soup & the beef stew with gnocchi. Those two were so yummy!! Also, friendly waiter without being overly chatty. Love the place & the atmosphere there.

The food is really good and authentic, the service is a bit slow due to a very high number of orders, but it is totally worth it. There is also a band with traditional music. The chicken gnocchi gulash style is really good!

Loved the traditional dish that was served. The restaurant chairs and tables were beautiful traditional chairs and tables. They had a violinist playing which added to the atmosphere.

We had a lovely evening here. The server we had was nice. We ordered starters. And then grabbed another server as we'd picked a wine. He tried a little too hard to upsell and more expensive wine. I will say the wine was already more than I'd imagine it needs to be. So we rejected his idea and stuck with the one we ordered. Which I believe was a malbec. And it was delicious. Traditional food. All cooked great. The star of the show was the live music. They were wonderful and visited tables for requests. Which was very touching. Would recommend. I had the stuffed cabbage and loved it! Good portions. Nice and clean.

Beautiful! The food was amazing, the staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was lovely, the band were great. Would definitely visit again and was very happy with the price.

Exquisite Cuisine Overshadowed by Service Missteps While the culinary offerings at this restaurant were genuinely noteworthy, the overall dining experience was unfortunately tarnished by a series of service missteps. The food, although of high quality and exquisitely prepared, was notably expensive. The service, while fundamentally friendly, left us feeling somewhat misled. To illustrate, my father and I ordered a grilled plate priced at around 19,000 HUF, specifically requesting the one featuring sausages. Much to our surprise, we were served the poultry variant instead. Although the dish was still delectable, it was not what we had ordered. When we pointed out the error, our waiter merely smiled and insisted that we had, indeed, ordered the poultry version. The situation escalated when it came to payment. We were charged 26,000 HUF for the grilled plate, a significant leap from the already steep 19,000 HUF we had been initially quoted. When I questioned this discrepancy, the waiter insisted we had ordered the 'Big Big' plate, which was absolutely not the case. Regrettably, he was unwilling to engage in any further discussion, and my limited proficiency in Hungarian did little to aid the situation. Despite these negatives, the high-quality food and the live band that added a delightful ambience to our meal deserve mention. However, the unfortunate service experience and the argument over the bill heavily marred our overall impression of the restaurant. In light of these issues, I can only extend a 3-star rating to this establishment. It's genuinely disheartening, as the excellent cuisine and the enjoyable live music could have made for a memorable dining experience had the service been more attentive and fair.

The waiters were all very nice and the food was good, but it seems a bit overpriced. Our bill was that of a fine-dining experience, but it definitely didn’t felt that way. We just had one appetizer and two dishes for 90€

This is an excellent place to take out of town guests or visitors for a classic Hungarian meal. The 4 piece gypsy band plays nightly. They are excellent musicians and able to play requests. Staff and musicians interact with the guests and are extremely responsive to requests.

I loved the live band here. They played classical music which really added to the atomsphere. The food was good too and the staff were so kind.

Tried Goulash in bread and it was tasty indeed. On the other hand I believe prices are a little bit higher when compared to other restaurants. One more thing, we specifically asked for small beer but got the 0.5lt instead. I believe it was not a mistake :)

Traditional Hungarian restaurant, looks small from the outside but is big inside covering two floors. Most evenings there is a Gypsy band that wander around playing at tables. When we were there a lady was celebrating her 80th birthday with her family who had a great time. Menu and food were excellent, served by very friendly staff.

Very good Hungarian dishes with live traditional music. The gulasch in a bread pan is a must. A bit expensive.

Came here two nights in a row. Night 1 we had the beef goulash in bread and it was amazing! Unfortunately, they forgot our pancakes after but apologised with some complimentary traditional Hungarian liquor, Palinka. On the second night we tried the giant schnitzel and the beef with gnocchi. Both were amazing, and we got the pancakes after, which were amazing! Only real tip, if your food takes longer than 5-10min to come out, ask. The staff are super friendly and rapid! Most of our food was out within 2-5min.

Service was 100% proof, the dish was amazing and delicious, if you are a gourman of palinka just try Pear, Quince and finish with Plum Unforgettable tase !

Me and my wife had two schnitzel and a water for 52$. The food was ok but definitely there are better Hungarian restaurants around with more to offer to a tourist than this one. They definitely charge a mid/high end for a dish and don’t have anything to back it up and in terms of flavour or quality. Save your self the time and go somewhere.

Annos sopii hyvin esim. kahdelle hengelle alkupalaksi. Paikallinen lager olut on myös maistamisen arvoinen. Vahva suositus tälle paikalle!
