Outstanding pub with unbelievable views and scenery. Car parks not great, smooth surface, but single lane, and small spaces, horrible for big cars. Usually very busy, so go very slow as it's filled with blind pedestrians and drivers. Pub itself is much bigger than it looks once inside. Extremely cosy, clean, and light. Full table service, great pub* menu, very fast service, excellent value for money. As a pub* it's outstanding. Just remember is not a Michelin starred fine dining experience, don't go expecting a life changing 10 course culinary experience.

Large car park to the side with 2 disabled spaces. But could see this filling up at the weekend quite quickly especially in the summer. No steps up to front entrance but a bit of an incline so those in a wheelchair might require some assistance. Upon arrival we were asked if we had booked. We hadn't. Seemed to take a while to find a table for us. There did seem to be several unoccupied and many remained like this during our visit so difficult to see what the problem was. It was an overcast Tuesday afternoon in February around 2pm, not a Saturday or Sunday, so would have expected no real issues finding a table for two. We eventually were given a table and once seated our drinks order taken. Menu looked impressive. Seemed to be a broad range of dishes with a few options you don't tend to see on other pub menus. Also there was a Chef's specials menu with choice of 3 starters, 2 mains and 1 sweet. We opted to order from the main menu. I ordered the Black Pudding Scotch Egg at £7.95 to start. For main course I went for Liver and Onions at £13.95 and my brother ordered Hand made Cheese and Onion pie at £11.95. When the food arrived it was very good. Large portions and tasty. Brother said his cheese pie was one of the best he had ever had. And it's been a long time since I have had lambs liver but it was very nice and a good, ample portion. Unfortunately the food was let down by the service. I counted six members of staff, 3 male, 3 female. At some point or another I think everyone of them took a turn at our table even if just to clear the plates away. After our drinks order had been taken it did seem a long time till our food order was taken. Once we had finally ordered and I had finished my starter our mains seemed to take an age to arrive. In the end my brother had to ask a member of staff if she could go check on them. At this time they didn’t appear overly busy. Several tables empty. In fact so quiet one member of staff was gazing out the window admiring the wonderful views that can be seen from up here. My brothers pie came with beans when he was adamant he had asked for peas. But we had waited that long to get our main meals he didn't bother to raise this. He got his pie but I was left waiting a good few minutes for my liver to arrive. Would have been nice to have been served together. Apart from one member of staff asking if my starter was ok as he cleared the plate at no other time did any member of staff enquire about how our food was or if everything was ok. But we didn't appear to be unique in that. We didn't see or hear other customers getting asked this either. Only as we were getting ready to leave did we hear a male member of staff asking 2 customers if their meal was ok. So food wise no real complaints. Tasty, good portions and prices reasonable and very competitive with other establishments. Unfortunately let down by the service. It seemed uncoordinated. Why not have one member of staff looking after certain designated tables? In all the time spent eating out it's the first time we can remember having to ask a member of staff where our food was. I would try the food again. However, the service would need to improve significantly. And it is this which has brought the score on my review down to a 3.

Although we only had drinks, it looks a nice place to eat with tasty typical pub food on the menu. It was very popular on a Saturday night with most tables full. Plenty of staff hanging around waiting to serve, we'll definitely be going back soon for something to eat.

I had the braised lamb shank and it was delicious and cooked to perfection. We ate here on Easter Sunday and for a party of 11 we were seen to and served our food very quickly. I had a couple of cocktails which were also delicious. Others commented their roast beef was bland and dry. Personally I would go again.

The Grey Mare is our favourite restaurant and this evening yet again we were treated to more great food, service and hospitality. We enjoyed their classic cheese and onion pie and lasagna, followed by the most unbelievably mouth watering profiteroles served with whipped cream and garnished with fresh raspberries (a great taste combination). The profiteroles were chilled so the dish had incredible taste as well as texture. I always say that for a restaurant to succeed in a remote location it has to be good. The Grey Mare is the absolute proof of that !

A joint birthday meal for my mum and dad. Pre booked and good job as it got busier as we were there. Lovely food and gorgeous dessert. Will definitely be back. Great views of the hills. ( yes i know its weird with cheesecake and it's second time I've done it here but if I ask for custard instead of cream or ice cream it's like 2 puds winner ha)

No booking and a full car park wasn’t a problem. You know them Sunday’s when only a roast dinner will do? Well this was one of them! As we pulled on to the car park we began to worry as we hadn’t booked and there wasn’t many spaces. We shouldn’t or worried as we got seated straight away. Both me and the other half had the roast beef, pink for me and well done for her. It looked fantastic when it arrived and tasted just as good. The only little thing we borh said was the roast potatoes could of used a bit of crisping up! But that was it. My elderly mother with a tiny appetite had a kid’s chicken nugget meal. She ate the lot and it not often that happens! For dessert the other half had the chocolate brownie of the specials. It wasn’t the biggest portion but she said it was very good! I had the Belgian chocolate pudding and it was very lite and very chocolatey yum yum. The service was fantastic very attentive but unobtrusive and dispute the pub being very busy at no point did we feel rushed. Thank you

Oh my days! Hats off to the chef today!! Our dinner was just hit out of the park outstanding. Thank you for tantalising our taste buds with food that is the best we've had since God knows when. We really enjoyed every dish that was served and look forward to coming back soon. We are so lucky to have this practically on our doorstep. Thanks guys. Back today and The mains, beef and onion pie for me and liver for wifey were really good but check out that god damn desert...! Strawberry, Prosecco and white chocolate truffle with vanilla ice cream! The Grey Mare outstanding!

Arrived in a quick decision as our baby had been travel sick. Really accommodating to us even though we hadn't booked. Food was outstanding, the best pub meal we've had in recent times. Attentive staff too. Great place.

We visited here on Mothers Day. The menu was extensive but we opted for a roast seen as it was Sunday. The food was delicious and arrived promptly despite it being so busy. The desserts were also very tasty. It did seem a little rushed but I understand they need the tables vacated for the next customers on special days. I usually like to relax and have a few drinks after my meal so I will definitely try here again when it's a little quieter. Overall very good!

Our first time visiting the Gray Mare We arrived at a very busy time but we were soon accomadated and sat at a table for 2. All staff were extremely polite friendly and professional We ordered starters and mains. The food was beautiful. The portions were very generous. Our waitress was more than happy to box up our leftovers for us to takeaway All in all a fantastic visit. And we will definitely return Many thanks Gary and Nicola

Absolutely made up we popped in!!! Always wanted to come here and on the off chance on the way home we popped in even though we thought we would have no chance getting a table for 2 as the carpark looked so busy but to our suprise they had one. With in 2 minutes of sitting down and ordering drinks we had them, then 10 minutes later with had our roast. 10/10 for service. The place is run so well even with the pressure of being really busy. The food was unreal and the portions were HUGE. Definitely Definitely would recommend.

Nothing but high praise! The Grey Mare is nothing short of perfect. There are not many places where you can get this quality of food at the price while looking out at some spectacular views. The staff are friendly and always present to tend to their customers. The food is top quality and all for a great price. Cheese & Onion pie is definitely recommended! Thank you Grey Mare will definitely keep returning!

Called in passing and was not disappointed Lovely food well cooked and served. My other half waxed lyrical over the traditional steak pudding home made in the rag as is the proper Lancashire way. The service was cheerful and efficient and we ate our meal in warmth overlooking a moorland vista. Will definitely return.

We have been to the Grey Mare for the first time this week and it was so good we came back the next day. On the first visit the place was pretty much full. We hadn't booked but the staff were great, found us a table, took our orders and made us very welcome. All the customers looked very happy and there is a lovely atmosphere. The food came quickly and was absolutely excellent. I think the menu is brilliant and there is also daily specials, you couldn't want for more. The experience was so good that I booked a table to come back today for my birthday lunch. I am so glad i did as again the food was excellent and the staff were lovely, especially Caz and Stacey who made us feel very welcome. The amazing view tops everything off. A huge thanks to the Grey Mare team for being outstanding at everything they do. I cant wait to come back soon.

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The soup I had was amazing, I scraped the bowl clean. Loved sitting in the well decorated marquee outside, it was warm and dry. We will definitely be returning here.

Huge thank you to everyone at the pub for an amazing day for my baby shower. The venue is beautiful and I simply couldn’t of asked for a better environment. Both food and service was second to none. Highly recommend to anyone who is thinking of the perfect place to hold their celebration or event. Thank you so much again!

Decided to try this place off a friend's recommendation. Food was OK. Pleased to see old fashioned mince meat pie on the menu and with traditional shortcrust pastry! The meat didn't disappoint but the pastry did. It obviously wasn't straight from the traditional oven but probably the microwave as the crust was not crumbly but tough, almost rubbery and hard to cut. I had Apple Strudel for dessert and this was also edible but not crispy and flaky like filo pastry should be. Top that off with good beer but at £3.80 a pint - in a Thwaites own pub! I shan't be rushing back.

Excellent staff, very friendly and accommodating. The food was lovely as it was last time but it is somewhere you eat early and then continue drinking in the bar or head off home. I believe Sunday lunch is a real treat.

Love coming here. The food is amazing, with plenty of choice on the menu. Friendly & helpful staff & owners. Always worth the 30 mile round trip from Manchester.

Just been for a lunch time meal and thus was such a good experience. Really good quality food at a reasonable price and no skimping on portions. Staff are really friendly and good service that doesn't leave you waiting. Definitely be going again soon. Thanks for a lovely afternoon!

Stopped here for Lunch. Lovely place, staff very nice. We ordered salt and pepper chicken and the 6oz burger. Both very good dishes and the food piping hot, can't fault it.

Me and my other half had our first date here 5 years ago in the window seat overlooking the beautiful views, we loved the food and experience very much that we came back to reminisce on our first date and requested the exact seats we had back then and staff accommodated that for us 🥰 They still serves amazing quality food, has humble waiting staff and friendly faces everywhere you look upon greeting you. Me and my partner had the chicken supreme and the lasagne, they tasted divine 🤤 thankyou to all the staff for everything you did for us to have another perfect evening 😊

Had a meal for two on a Wednesday evening. Cosy place/atmosphere and friendly & fast service. The classic pub food was mostly excellent - my only niggle was that the chips were a little underdone. But I'd highly recommend this place.

  • 4/5 Peter W. 3 years ago on Google
A well presented pub, in an isolated situation on The West Pennine Moors with spectacular views right across the area. The systems in the pub were very Covid secure. However the welcome was brusque and almost like a teacher telling us to sanitise hands and how we were to behave. It could be done in a much more friendly manner with the same desired effect. The menu is good, and reasonably priced and the food was quick to arrive, which made it a good place for a quick business lunch break. However the food was disappointing - factory produced cheese pie, a dollop of mushy peas and dry chips. Edible but unappetising. The chicken curry was more palatable, but still accompanied by dry chips. Not sure the meal was value for money, and apart from the geographical convenience as a meeting place and the quick service, not sure I’d go again.

Myself and my husband came to The Grey Mare Inn for lunch for the first time to try out a new place and I can honestly say this is such a gem of a find, it is one of the nicest pubs I have ever been to, the location is stunning, the pub itself is gorgeous inside and immaculate, the food is absolutely amazing and the staff are great and so friendly. I can't recommend enough, we had such a lovely afternoon and will definitely be coming back I recommend the Grey Mare Inn to everyone now.

Great food as always, decent portions sensible prices. Staff were excellent particularly Jackie who looked after us and our children. One of our favourite places for an ad hoc meal (usually lunch) out.

Staff friendly but food poor. Ordered chicken ceasar salad but the chicken was like rubber. The lettuce should have been crisp but was limp. Definitely not worth the £12.95 charged.
