Highlight of my trip so far! Kindest hosts, they were so friendly and helpful. Futons on tatami mats were very comfortable, the size of the room was fine. Onsen was nice and comfortable. The food was the best part- amazing vegetarian meals upon request, dinner and breakfast are huge and very well priced! There is tea and a small snack placed in your room daily, and free coffee in the morning and iced tea in the afternoon. I did not want to leave! Wonderful location and highly recommend.

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan in Takayama. My wife and I had an unbelievable experience here. The hospitality was top notch and the food was the best spread we had during our travels to Japan. The staff was incredibly friendly and the experience was so authentic. The public bath was an amazing and the hotel was clean and quiet. Would absolutely stay here again!

Our first time at a ryokan, and it did not disappoint! What an incredible stay. The food was outstanding - the best we’ve had in Japan! We enjoyed using the traditional public bath and sleeping in a traditional style room. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Would 100% recommend.

We have just stayed at Yamakyu for two nights and we had a wonderful time. The ryokan is absolutely charming and the location is a beautiful town. What really gives Yamakyu top marks is the wonderful staff team who could not be more helpful and welcoming. As for the food - it was absolutely delicious. We hope to return and stay longer next time as there is so much more to see and do in the area. We highly recommend

Very excellent place where to spend a few nights while you are travelling via Takayama. The hotel is really quiet, perfect for walking around to the old city. The room was clean, bright and with an excellent view... during the day the room is a living room, and during evenings the staff makes it as bedroom. The staff was welcoming, the receptionist is very friendly and the ladies serving us dinner lovely. They gave us a photo of ourselves as memory which was a nice surprise. The dinner and the breakfast were delicious and we learned a lot about how to cook some food in the Japanese way. They also have a shuttle bus running from/to the station.

This was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Traditional Japanese hospitality. Amazing food, you will definitely not go hungry. There are two hot spring baths to relax in. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. A very enjoyable stay in a great part of Japan.

There has to be a reason why this Ryokan has consecutively won TripAdvisor choice every year. First, the dinners are amazing. They are made by local mums whom they hire. The variety is incredible, the food keeps on coming, months after and I still think of the dinners. You won’t regret it. For the amount you pay for the stay and the food, it’s so worth it. The meal was so incredible I cried in joy while eating. What an experience. Two, service is so personalised. I spent my birthday over my stay. They even gave me a card and a monkey baby keychain. One of the local mums even wished me happy birthday in the morning during breakfast. We even received a photo taken during our stay when we checked out. I have stayed a total of 4 nights this time. The service staff are just so so nice and they make you feel at home. Three, the onsen is wonderful. It’s a bathhouse concept. In your room, there’s only a toilet. You head down to the onsens to shower, but that creates an opportunity to take a dip. No one really stares at anyone. It’s relaxing and people do talk to each other. Mind the way you wear ur bathrobe though. I got reminded once. LOL. Four, shuttle service from station to ryokan upon request. Nice clean van. The young driver and staff can speak English really well. He’s polite and friendly as well. Five, near the old town - 15 min walk. Situated near the Temples as well. Much as I wanted to explore Takayama. I wanted to just lounge around in this home away from home. It was cozy and unique. Definitely my to stay and recommended choice of accommodation in Takayama, in fact, best I’ve stayed in Japan. Good job Oyado Yamakyu!

Excellent food - really five star traditional eating experience. Pick up to and from train station offered if requested. Located on the edge of town so very tranquil. Only let down was the futon mattress which felt synthetic so too hot for summer sleeping

Excellent and affordable ryokan experience. Conveniently, they provide shuttle service to and from the train station when guests arrive/depart. Location is close to many shrines and a short walk to old town. While the decor and furnishings are not luxurious, the friendly and diligent staff treat you like royalty. The rooms are clean and spacious; ours had a private toilet. Dinner and breakfast are lovingly prepared with local ingredients and generously portioned even for the biggest of appetites. On-site onsen is open early and late so you can go for a soak before bed and first thing in the morning. Thank you for hosting us in your beautiful city.

From far my best food and hotel experience. The diner and breakfast were insane - make not to eat before because it's A Lot !!! The staff is the nicest and the bedroom very comfy. I am vegetarian and everything was cooked without fish/meat which is sometimes complicated to find. The hot bath is lovely as well. If you don't want to use the communal bathroom there is one shower separated from the rest. A big thank you to the staff, I would recommend it to everyone!!!!!

My family stayed here in June 2023. We had a wonderful time. The staff were so kind, friendly, and helpful. They picked us up at the train station and treated us like special guests from beginning to end. The food was also amazing. It is a great value for a Ryokan experience and would recommend it to anyone.

If I could give 6 stars, I would. Comfortable room with toilet and in-house ensens (public baths) or private showers. Located away from the main part of the city but close to temples, popular streets and nice views. The staff are fantastic with good English. You can choose to dine in or go out for food. The food was amazing and very Japanese, in style and presentation. I recommend you experience dining in.

This Hotel is our highlight of our trip to Japan so far. It is authentic and beautiful. Everything is clean and employees are kind and polite. This is quite an experience from public bath to dinning experience. I highly recommend adding dinner and breakfast. Dinner is a multiple courses of Yumminess. Even if you already have enough Japanese food or even you are not very into Japanese raw foods, there are still things you probably will enjoy.

We stayed at Yamakyu in April and we had a fantastic time! The staff here are so lovely and welcoming. They went above and beyond to help us and made us feel so at home. The food is amazing too and lovely spacious onsen. Thank you for a fabulous stay!

This is a great value place. It’s certainly not the perfect Ryokan experience, buts it’s solid and well priced. The rooms are super simple and a little outdated. The house itself has some interesting art posters and it also displayed some kitsch. The rooms have no shower, so consider you need to use the shared hotel bath space (it’s actually not as bad as it sounds). Again the food was good, and beyond our expectations considering the price point. Also the provides limited car parking - which is not usual.

Great ryokan with authentic atmosphere & nice baths incl. yukata to wear, etc. The hosts are very kind & generous- picked me up & brought me to the station; all staff very friendly & spoke English well. Meals are delicious, beautiful and bountiful (when I had enough I spoke up so as not to waste food). Location was ideal for me as I like to walk after dinner and could explore the nearby temples. Main “downtown “ is reachable in 7 min walk and I appreciated being away from the hustle & bustle. I visited Hida Folk Village on the other side and even walked there (bus back to station & walked home)
as well as to the morning markets. I would highly recommend this ryokan to all who want a relaxing stay with bath amenities, good food and helpful hosts 😊

Great location, super friendly and helpful staff. Best of all is the dinner - service, presentation, quality & quantity all top notch. Breakfast is very traditional and rice base, very nice but may not appeal to everyone.
