THE
NUSRETİYE
MOSQUE
The
mosque
was
built
together
with
the
military
buildings
due
the
importance
given
to
the
military
by
Mahmud
II
.Thereby
instead
of
being
surrounded
by
several
foundation
buildings
like
in
the
other
mosque
complexes
of
the
sultans,
its
single
outhouses
are
the
military
buildings
which
were
built
in
front
of
the
cannon
foundry.
The
Nusretiye
Mosque,
which
was
built
on
the
place
of
the
Barracks
of
the
Cannon
Carriers
and
the
Mosque
which
were
burned
during
the
fire
on
February
24",
1823,
was
started
construction
in
June
1823
and
completed
on
April
8",
1826.
Although
the
name
of
the
mosque
in
the
epigraph
was
indicated
as
the
Mosque
Nusret,
colloquially
it
was
known
as
the
Mosque
of
Tophane.
The
name
Nusret
(victory)
was
given
because
the
Mahmud
I
abolished
the
Janissary
organization.
The
architect
of
the
Nusretiye
Mosque
is
the
master
builder
Kirkor
Amira
of
the
Balyan
Family
who
built
countless
state
buildings
in
the
last
period.
It
has
been
known
that
the
mosque
has
repairs
in
recent
dates.
Placed
on
a
slightly
higher
platform
the
mosque
has
a
sanctuary
of
a
rectangular
plan.
The
baroque
and
empire
styles
of
Europe
were
mixed
in
the
architecture
of
mosque.

narthex,

the

d'Aronco
in
1901
by
Abdulhamid
II
in
accordance
with
the
architecture
and
exterior
decoration
of
the
mosque,
was
disassembled
in
1956
and
was
reestablished
in
Maçka
opposite
to
Istanbul
Technical
University
building.
