It’s all about the views! Getting here might be confusing though since there is no signage on the door facing the street. Look for the “KTSM” building, go inside, take the elevator to the highest floor, then walk up a flight of steps. Lovely place to watch it rain, too!

Arap Mosque (Turkish: Arap Camii, literally Arab Mosque) is a mosque in the Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, Turkey. The building was originally a Roman Catholic church erected in 1325 by the friars of the Dominican Order, near or above an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Paul (Italian: San Paolo) in 1233. Although the structure was altered during the Ottoman period, it is the only example of medieval religious Gothic architecture remaining in Istanbul.

A hidden gem. Beautifully restored with exquisite timber interior, pillars and ceiling as well as a timber minaret. We visited around midday on a Sunday and the place was deserted - only us!!

Quiet unique architecture building, the whole internal decoration made out of wood. This old mosque called Arab Camii. Actually the mosque was originally a Roman Catholic church erected in 1325 by the friars of the Dominican order. Worth visiting this place.

(Translated by Google) Among the concrete blocks in the urban texture of Galata, the Arab Mosque, which is still noticeable with its rather high square shaped tower with a pointed cone; It is the only Gothic church of Istanbul that remained before the conquest. According to a rumor, it is the place where the first prayer sound is raised in Istanbul. There are two different rumors about how it was made. According to the first, the Arab Mosque, which was built in 717, is the first mosque in Istanbul. A commander named Mesleme bin Abdülmelik at the head of an army consisting of Muslim Arab commanders and Companions who came in 717 for the Conquest of Istanbul; He built a mosque in Galata where the first Ezan-ı Muhammedi sound was built in the Byzantine skies and it was called the Arab Mosque.

The Arabs Mosque in Istanbul features an archaeological architecture different from that of Ottoman Islamic architecture. Perhaps what is most attractive is a passageway under its square minaret leading to the mosque's inner courtyard. The mosque's exterior is stone and brick, while the inner courtyard is entirely timbered, with 22 wooden columns holding its roof. It got its name because many Arabs used to live nearby it, mainly "Arabs of Bani Al-Ahmar", who came to Istanbul from Andalusia after the collapse of the state of Beni Nasir. It is also said that Muslim Arabs established this mosque before the conquest of Istanbul.

It is not known by exactly whom or when the Arab Mosque (Turkish: Arap Camii) in Galata was built. It is thought that the building was constructed by Latin Crusaders as a church from the remains of Byzantine era ruins. In the period when Galata was under the control of the Genoese, the building was home to the Saint Paulo and Dominic Church. After the conquest of Istanbul, the building was converted to a mosque and became known as the Galata mosque. After 1492, as Arab migrants from Spain began to settle in the neighborhood, the mosque started to be known as the Arab mosque.
