Amazing place. Not much to see, but What you see is mesmerizing. Look at the photos.😇 Entry is 50tl or use muzekart! Pro's: - easy to reach by bus, metro and tram. It's like 5min walking from metro or tram station - accesible for wheelchairs (but not everything!) - little souvenirshop and toilets are open - not so much crowded, what it makes enjoyable to walk around Contra's: - it can be hot, bring extra water.

An archeological site worth a walk around. It contains the remnants of a Roman agora that was a reconstruction of an ancient Greek site destroyed by an earthquake. The basilica is decently preserved and gives a good sense of the size and layout of the ancient market. Of perhaps less interest, the site was later used as a graveyard, and there are Musilm grave markers in a corner of the site. The tickets were 40 TL, or could be visited as part of the Aegean or Turkey museum passes.

Originally built by the Greeks in 4th century BC and later reconstructed on the orders of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius in 178 AD after an earthquake destroyed it, AGORA OF SMYRNA, like all other AGORAS in Greek & later Roman states, was a social complex/marketplace for people in then Smyrna(present day Izmir) with its basement housing different sections and water channels still amazingly active.

It is a nice place in the middle of the city, especially for those who like to visit the ancient city ruins. Entrance with Müzekart is much more convenient and can be obtained in 2-3 minutes from the box office. It is not a very large area, but it is pleasant to wander and photograph.

It's a surprisingly extensive site, with good explanatory panels. Presentation has improved considerably since we first visited a few years ago.

Such an interesting archialogical site right in the centre of Izmir. It's fascinating to see the remaining structures and incredible to understand how they built their towns and how they lived all those years ago.

Smyrna was one of the 7 Churches mentioned in the book of Revelation. Turkish Bible have the word "smyrna" replaced with ("Izmir") because Smyrna is part of Izmir today. Smyrna is rich in history and has huge collections of artifacts! How to reach to Smyrna? 1. You can get to metro (subway), which costs only 3 TL. Head to Çankaya station, at Çankaya you will see boards explaining about Smyrna. From Çankaya, it is walkable distance of 10 minutes. As you get out of subway, you will start seeing big iron barricades, yes that's Smyrna. 2. From Basmane train station ( train otogar) it's walkable, 8-10 minutes max. If you are visiting Turkey for its archeological & Historical stuff,(many Christians do) kindly make sure to buy a museum Card (costs around 70TL)and you will have access to all Museums and historical places. It obviates all needs of buying tickets and standing in long queues. Carry a water bottle wherever you go as sometimes it's too sunny. Be careful with Taxi drivers. Have a good visit. If there's any other queries, please feel free to ask. Happy to help you!

Great place to spend the afternoon and check out some ancient buildings and artifacts! Met some nice local university students here and had a great time. Only cost 25 lira to enter which is roughly $3 usd. Would recommend for a quick stop to learn some history of Izmir.

Interesting please. The cost for 1 ticket in November 2022 was 50TL so roughly $2. The best part is the water channels.

I got lost twice before I found the main entrance. The entrance is in a very worn and dirty area. You as a tourist would never find here or dare to come here. You have to be careful when you come to this area. It costs 40 TL to enter and walk around to basically not see anything valuable. Very sad. They could do it much better.

The ruins were nice to witness and there were few people around, giving me enough walking space to wander around. The only reason why I give 4 stars and not 5 is that unfortunately the ruins are placed near what one would call, a bad neighborhood, with decrepit buildings and a general feeling of unease.

Amazing structure in tact. Arches and underground space! Kids had a great time exploring. Under renovation, though, so a bunch of it was off limits. Will be fantastic when it is all open!

Small complex in the middle of the city. $100 TL admission as of July 2023. The site is worth a visit if you are in Izmir. There are parking lots around the complex and the Kemeralti bazaar is within walking distance.

I was very interested in visiting this ruin as it is the general location of one of the Bible's 7 churches mentioned in Revelation chapter 2. This is a small but interesting site to see. And across the street is an alley that leads to a bazaar that we spent even more time in. Compared to Ephesus, this is tiny (also mentioned in Rev. 2). But if you know history it is a must-see.

Beautiful antique places. If you will visit this city, you should go to this place. It’s amazing that I can fill it’s atmosphere

Lovely location, it seemed like quite a lot of the site was closed but at 50L it was appropriately priced for what you could access. English language signage was in good English. Location on Google maps was off by a couple of hundred metres but will try to update this. Basically entrance is on North side of the sight rather than south as indicated.

A beautiful historical place to visit, but it lacks tourist information and it is not so we'll maintained. It would be a great place to visit with a guide or if you are well informed to understand what you are looking at. There are information panels around, but not many.

Smyrna, the ancient city in Izmir, is a captivating experience. Its extensive history, dating back to the Hittites, unfolds as you navigate its well-preserved ruins. Standout features like the Agora transport you back to times when Smyrna was a bustling trade center. The site is well-maintained, and the interpretive signs provide valuable insights. A visit to Smyrna offers a unique journey through the pages of history, making it a must-see for any history enthusiast visiting Izmir.

Impressive to see. It was not a very big site, but we didn't stay there very long, with two kids of 19 and 20 and one wasn't feeling well.

This was a very nice ruin to visit. Luckily we could read a lot of information online because the signs weren't all translated or the information was scarce. Many areas were out of reach for the tourists which is why I only gave this 4 stars. It is a pity you cannot go and visit the house of Sabbatai Zevi, for example. One of the most interesting things to see was the pipe system that still carries water since Roman times. It's still in it's original state. The rest is quite nice to visit but I would expect more involvement from the local authorities and maybe some more texts about the place and different areas that you can visit. The entrance cost was 130 TL. There weren't many tourists around.

It is a nice place with a lot of history. Worth a visit. There is room for improvement however. The area isn't clearly marked. There are some places where you have no idea where you should go next or if you are allowed there. Some parts are under construction and access is restricted. A few extra signs will be very helpful. Some pictures with how it used to look like would have been nice, to give you a better idea of the ancient buildings.

At first I thought it was all about gates and warehouse like structure until I cross the hall way. Such a great place to visit!

Finding an entrance was a bit of a problem, but overall the site is great. Sadly, only a small portion of it is available to the public, but still worthy of a visit!

This place is a must see. We've been around lots of ancient ruins and this has a couple of unique things to make it a must see. It's subterranean with complete archways and water running in the channels. And it's got loads of doggos!! Definitely not to be missed.

  • 4/5 Gokul R. 5 years ago on Google
You would be amazed to learn some strange facts when you explore the underground markets in this neatly preserved ruins. Remember , some channels then, ( a couple of thousand years ago) fed the markets in question. And what's more awe inspiring is that , the water still runs. ! Go check it. Well maintained . Neat and clean . A humble fee is collected . Definitely a must visit . Giving it 4 star because, there are no guides or none of the chaps can talk English for nuts !

Nice historical landmark in Izmir. It's easy to get to the museum. Few areas is not allowed to go in but still a nice experience.

Fantastic place to see the ruins of the ancient city and history but for some it could be just a pile of rocks. If you like history and see the remains of Roman, Greek and so on this is a fantastic open air museum.
