As a LONG TIME customer, I felt compelled to share a "not-so-pleasant" experience. The price has always been "reasonable". The menu selection great. The service great. The quality of the food pretty good. However, I requested the grilled ahi as tempura style. (THEY DO HAVE AHI TEMPURA). The owner/cook told the waitress "We DON'T do that!". I was willing to pay a little extra if need be. WHAT IS SO DIFFICLT IN DIPPING THE CUT AHI INTO TEMPURA BATTER AND DEEP FRY IT??? I guess some people DON'T appreciate their customers . They DON'T follow the culinary rule of: "NEVER let your customer leave unhappy, because they will tell 3 people". Guess what? I SURPASSED my quota!!!

Cute hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant in an industrial-ish area of Kaneohe. Have always had a good experience here with very helpful and friendly staff to delicious local-style Japanese food. On my last visit during lunch, I was hoping for more Teishoku options with sashimi, but the lunch menu only had two choices. The waitress brought the dinner special menu and said I could pick from there. Gotta love when they go the extra mile like that to make their customers happy.

I usually like it here as Kaneohe's FINEST, as the PRIMARY SECRET is eating it right away, not 3, 6 hours after, retrying it as it'll never be the same, and living here since 1962, no one can say that I don't know where's best. Rarely at times, just a little inconsistency, but I think I know what to do when ordering, Calvin, remember us? Of course he does, but I know or realize how difficult running a business really is, and not no cake walk, but my problem is, I'm always LATE, and not funny, even to me, but need to think about him, the owner who really works hard, as I have difficulty frying eggs. But THANKS! The last one, they're all great, like one before, no problem, just eat my kale and blueberries with hempseed oil and little french dressing but need to chew, chew, and chew too long to get it down, my problem, but I like your food as I know it's hard work! Gary and Brandy as I really don't know of anywhere here in Kaneohe that's GREAT! I know running a business isn't easy, but if I knew what you do, my Mom would still be with us as I've bought 2 crock-pots, actually for nothing, only my golden retriever kinda liked it, for me or my Mom, we didn't care for it despite the 8 hours it took 3 times I tried and I think I give up. I also have a 400 dollar meat grinder, Cabelas but .5 hp commercial grade, still waste of money, I hate cooking anyway. Spam and eggs tastes good but spam isn't good for us! Tough Luck! GO KIKUYA'S! IF YOU'RE AROUND DURING WHEN IT'S OPEN! I LOOK AT GOOGLE, ALTHOUGH I KNOW THE NUMBER IN MY HEAD, IT SAYS "CLOSES SOON" AND IT'S 20 MINUTES TIL 9 PM, I RING IT AROUND 10 TIMES and if I don't get the message, means time for the Red Roof College, You Know, PUPULE HOUSE past Kaneohe District Courti! Haha, sorry, not to offend anyone, joke!!! But who doesn't like Japanese food....? Everybody loves it, like Hawaiian food, but I know of any on the Windward side or for that matter, anywhere that serves great Hawaiian food. Oh, maybe kalihi, but I rather have Kikuya's any time!

Wonderful experience. The butterfish is probably the best we had in the very long time and the teriyaki beef was delicious.

Enjoyed the sukiyaki here. Came out piping hot which it should so that was good. Pretty good variety of Japanese comfort food. A little pricey but at this point, I'm just glad small businesses are able to stay open. There was one lady working the floor the whole time we were in there but she was amazing and we never found ourselves waiting too long for food or refills of water.

Kāneohe is a fisherman town and it is proudly represented here at Kikuya. Everytime we have eaten there is always a desire to eat fish. Nevermind the teishoku dinners which is common in 90% within Hawaii Japanese restaurants. If you are craving akule, papio, menpachi or Hawaiian reef fishes this is your one-stop shop. Food is quick and fresh and the family who owns this quiet respectable dive are true to themselves and their customer base. Go there and find out for yourself how ono their food is. Ke aloha mai nei kākou.

I think what I liked most about this place was the customer service. Staff were friendly and nice! The location is excellent with easy parking. The portion of the food was amazing!! Presentation is good as well! Of course it’s not like the real Japanese restaurants in Japan but they were good enough! Price was within the normal range.

You get a lot for your money and it's delicious! They have a Happy Hour deal going on during summer...15% off menu items after 1 pm. They are closed Mondays. LOVE the butterfish😋

Good place for dinner. Parking available in front of restaurant. Server was friendly and the food was quite good. I ordered the tempura dinner and a side of potato croquette and wasn’t disappointed.

New owners and the food is not same and not for the better. Yosenabe was full of cubes of Tofu as a filler. It wasn't even Yosenabe, it was Sukiyaki described as Yosenabe.

This is my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. Delicious Teishokus and they make the Tempura just right. Excellent service, and the owner Calvin is extremely hardworking and personable.

Kiku-ya has long been one of our family favorites. For Mother's Day, I didn't want my children to cook so I selected the new Kiku-ya Restaurant in Windward Mall, Kaneohe, 96744 to order their bento meals. Big mistake! Many others had the same plan and the Kiku-ya staff couldn't keep up with the orders. We ordered around 5 pm for pick up @ 6:40 pm and the meals made it to our home table around 7:40 pm, cold and missing Kiku-ya's typical presentation. I write this not to disparage Kiku-ya but as a reminder to plan ahead for delays. Food service is suffering with minimal staff and supply chain delays.

Great food, great service and price are reasonable. Staffs are very friendly, fast, and professional.

The butterfish is excellent, the chicken teriyaki is very good. They start you with water and hot tea, the meals are fully coursed, with miso, cabbage salad, with the dinner special sashimi. The meals come with rice, salad, a dipping sauce (shoyu maybe), tempura vegetables, the tempura shrimp is huge, juicy and wonderful. The staff is very friendly. The bathrooms need a little more attention but not bad. This is not a “fancy” place but the food is good and we had no wait on a Saturday afternoon. The prices were very fair ranging from $18-29.

Food was awesome and pretty reasonably priced, really cool decor also. There can be a wait as it’s a popular restaurant and space within is limited, it is definitely authentic Japanese cuisine and being able to speak Japanese is a plus. Only took a star off because our server was pretty curt and hovered a bit too much.

Server was super nice & sweet but food was unpalatable/horrible! Ordered soft shell crab & Agadashi tofu as appetizer both came out completely black burnt & saturated slick with oil. My lady friend & myself had 2 choice combo- shrimp tempura was good but miso butterfish was also burnt black, couldn't eat half. Tempura sauce was thick, sweet & heavy no grated daikon or ginger. Next table asked for tempura- sweet potatoe & kobacha(pumpkin) neither available. Beware the front picture of restaurant shown all wrong, they moved to Windward Mall 2nd floor! No Japanese atmosphere & beside the chairs, the permanent seats are cut-up & rundown.

I had the chicken katsu, it was overall an okay take on this dish; that said, I thought it was over battered and quite greasy. The cut of chicken was also on the fatter side, where I feel a chicken katsu is better as a lean meat dish.

I’ve gone a few times since they opened at windward mall, I primarily do takeout. I got a great piece of miso butterfish today. Omg. Service is always good. Food is ready within a reasonable time. Prices are in line with the other restaurants in the area. Didn’t take pictures because I ate it too fast.

Miso soup was too salty than regular miso. The tempura was bland.. The Batter wasnt seasoned. It was either too salty or bland. Mac Salad was good. Service was great.

  • 1/5 Jan R. 1 year ago on Google
Food wasn't authentic. Meaning the butterfish was just thrown on the grill, no miso flavor. Shrimp tempura was not your normal tempura batter. Saimin was spicy. Lost of tables. Located in windward mall.

Tucked away in the corner of a bunch of warehouse offices, this is one of those secret local eats. The Japanese food here never disappoints. I love the akule, but it's a special and not always on the menu.

Sorry but prices went up too high and quality of food not as good. Right now Domo or Kenko Ya is better. Kikuya - Please review your prices and improve the quality of your food. Few years ago it was awesome!

Great food and friendly service. They reopened this weekend after some remodeling. Although some of regulars came for the nostalgic ambiance, I think they will appreciate the much needed facelift. Congrats to Calvin and his staff!! #KaneoheEats #HiddenGem
