政府の肝いりで作られた、古いが素晴らしい美術館である。バリ島にちなんだ絵画や木彫りが多数展示されている。2階から地下1階まで三層あり、いずれの展示も充実していると思う。ただ、私が訪れたときに来訪者が他に誰もおらず、美術館を独り占め状態だったことからも分かるように、なんとなく寂れた感じである。個人的には静かにゆっくり鑑賞できたので幸せこの上ないが、少し勿体ないように思えた。恐らくウブドの中心部から離れていることが最大の原因だと思う。歩いて訪問するのは余程の覚悟が必要な距離であり、私のような物好きでないと、炎天下の中を1時間近くも歩いてやってくる観光客はそうはいないだろう。自分の場合はアルマの美術館を鑑賞した後、その足で散歩がてら歩いて訪れたのだが、やはり遠い。
そんなわけで、美しい田園風景のど真ん中にあり、観光地としてはうってつけにもかかわらず、観光客がやってこない。それが理由かどうかは分からないが、建物の管理が甘く、状態がよくない。せっかくの美術品が泣いている。私が観覧していないフロアは、すべて消灯していて薄暗かった。
別館には展示即売されている多数の絵画があり、これらを眺めるのも実に楽しい。係員に聞けば「20年くらい前には多くの日本人が観光バスで続々とやってきたが、最近は少ないね」とのこと。似たような話は別の場所でも聞いた。80年代のバブル景気と、その崩壊後の日本の停滞がバリ観光に与えた影響を垣間見ることができた。この男性は英語が流暢だったため、様々な話をした。親切にもウブドの中心までバイクで送ると言ってくれたが、バイクに乗るのは怖かったので歩いて帰ることにした。
屋外の庭園や2階の窓から眺める、緩やかな傾斜に広がった水田風景は一見の価値がある。本当にのびのびとした田舎の原風景である。来てよかったと思える場所の一つである。
