The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic cathedral in downtown Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. The cathedral is located on Praça da Independência next to Hotel Rovuma and Maputo City Hall. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The foundation stone for the construction of the church was laid on June 28, 1936, and is located inside the narthex and inscribed by the Bishop of Mozambique and Cape Verde, D. Rafael Maria da Asunção. Construction on the cathedral was completed in 1944. The cathedral was designed by the Portuguese civil engineer Marcial Simões de Freitas e Costa, then a railway director. He designed the church pro bono for the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques. Freitas was inspired by the simple style and building materials of church construction in Europe of the time; the cathedral was ultimately built of concrete and cement. He was inspired to buildings such as the Notre-Dame du Raincy in Le Raincy by Auguste Perret and Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Lisbon, built by Pardal Monteiro. The simplicity and the choice of new materials was also a result of financial problems of the period.

In the center of the city, the big white church as it’s called, is one of the most iconic places in Maputo. Beautiful from outside and inside, quiet and always open for visits (until 6pm) and prayer. They celebrate mass everyday at 6pm and sunday there is also on the morning at 7:30 and 10am.

Large cathedral in the city centre, has beautiful spiral staircases. Worth a visit for sure, but if you're hoping to get to the top of the steeple like I was, apparently the stairs aren't in good enough condition so you can't go.

This place is amazing. First, from a catholic point of view, they have more than enough benchers and chairs that are confortable and well placed through out the cathedral to easily focus on status of angels, Jesus crucifix and Mary to feel the presence of God. As a tourist, I admired on the architectural choices and details seen all around.

The cathedral is really awesome from the outside. But it was closed. Mostly it was absolutely harrowing to have pesky vendors all over us. Smelly because of the hot day and their sweat. Insisted that we support them. Overpriced. Followed us all over and irritated us. No police to assist. Kept touching us making us flee from them

Huge and very spacious building. I believe it can seat around 1000 worshipers. The benches are excellent and have a comfortable, upholstered base for kneeling. It has some fans to ventilate in hot weather, although they are not very effective. The sound is good and you can hear it, although there is some echo. I noticed that the faithful do not help with the choral group's songs, that is, they do not respond to the songs, leaving the animation lukewarm. I don't know if there are bathrooms.
