Nice place to go for a quick visit. Entrance fee is 50MZN and the place is at least maintained. I also saw that it was possible to take a guided tour. Didn’t search how to arrange but suggest to google a bit if you are interested. There isn’t a lot to see, but you will spend a nice half hour up to 1 hour.

The old fort built by the Portuguese in mid 19th century near the site of an earlier fort. The small museum has the remnants of early Portuguese era. The Coffin of last ruler of the famed kingdom of Gaza, Ngungunhane's preserved, carved wooden coffin is displayed here.

The view of the wall from the outside is very intriguing, it gives you that Rome vibe (Aurelian walls). There is so much things to see and learn (mozambique history) inside and the stuff is friendly. The only hustle is the parking outside.

The fort is quite interesting although a bit lacking in historical detail about it all. It's now overseen by the university so I would've hoped for a bit more...... nonetheless there is a bit of history, lots of guns and some historical models. Most of all it's a nice, quiet place in the centre of town for reflection and peace. Staff are v friendly and only 50MZN entry.

Quick visit to the fortress. It is indeed not big, but hardly costs anything (50 Mt pp)... so why not visit and support its maintenance. Interesting display of Mozambique's history through puppet displays/ maquettes. Of course you must not miss the old Portuguese Fortress of Maputo. It is actually quite small and can be covered in less than an hour. They've got some pretty old cannons here which are neat to look at. Not exactly the funnest part of town to visit or park in, but you've got to do it at least once! There's some really interesting and informative exhibits explaining the formation of Maputo city over the last 500 years

Interesting place. A few statues and the original walls (although it is a 1950s replacement of the original).

A must for those interested in the Mozambican/ colonial history. The place is well preserved and tourists should consider at least one visit when coming to Maputo. However I would recommend visiting during daylight hours between 10;00 AM to 12:00 AM and try to visit with a local guide or local friends. You should by all by all means necessary try to park your vehicle in a secure paying parking area under guard or negotiate with parking guards in the street to monitor your vehicle during your visit to the Fortress. For peace of mind rather use local taxi services and arrange with the driver to collect you at a set time..enjoy the Fortress and be safe.

The building is amazing modern and old next to each other. There is a lot of stuff here and it can be an information overload. I personally found it very hard to follow the logic of the layout. I guess I was not interested in the fauna and agricultural side of the exhibition. I was more interested in the colonization history of the Congo. It seems this museum is a token of apology maybe? I would have liked to understand more the influence of the west on today's Africa. I would recommend a guided tour maybe they can explain the flow of the rooms better because alone it's hard to follow.

Belgium and todays Congo, Burundi and Rwanda share a particular history, the effects are still felt today. Unfortunately, the museum fails to adequately adress this. Without this chapter predominantly and self-critically integrated (many people would even expect that to be the introducing story of the museum with a dedicated room at the beginning), this rests a bloodless, though nicely arranged, collection of stones, dead birds and individual cultural artefacts. A hundred years or so after the colonial times, it is a pity to see that there still seems to be a long emancipatory way ahead for Belgium. In respect of history, the people, and ultimately also for the self-respect of the Belgian state.

A pleasant, 20 minute stroll around the tiny museum. Entry is cheap (20 meticais). Unfortunately, many of the exhibits don't have English captions, though

Myself and two children went to explore the fort. We paid the entry fee which would have been a good deal if the place was maintained properly. The garden was full of smashed glass, plastic bottles, plastic bags, cut offs of traditional African fabric. The youngest one went to sit on a bench for a photo and stepped on a pin that went through her sandle and into her foot. Luckily she had her tetanus. Also all the spaces inside the fort walls had been locked off. Apart from that it was quite interesting. I do recommend going but not untill it is sorted. It would only take 1 hour to clean the place up but no-one seems to be interested. We got our money back and an apology was made.

An excellent experience that I loved. This museum is dedicated especially to the colonial period of Congo under Leopold II reign. There are multiple sections to visit from masks and costumes to music and rituals. I loved the animals area and the mineral cristals section. You can see lots of colourful pieces of rocks and realise what an amazing place we live in and which NEEDS to be PRESERVED. Good immersion into this beautiful continent life and environment to get much more aware about the diversity and the beauty of our Planet 🌏. Worth a visit for adults and kids!

As a Museum there is no concept in it, you won't understand what they wanted to show you-even if there were in fact a lot of things to show...-. I would say, it is just a good collection.

(Translated by Google) Renovation at great expense, for something not at all extraordinary. The old museum had a charm and a cachet that was perhaps a little old-fashioned, but more authentic. And from an educational point of view, we understood much better what the spirit of colonization was with the old museum; today, the presentation is "self-righteous" and aims more to make an image in the air of the colonial period than to explain it.

(Translated by Google) A very diverse and prestigious museum that zooms in from the colonial period of Central Africa to the present day. The location and setting appeal to the imagination, although it is not always clear to grasp the context of the various rooms and exhibitions. The approach is scientific rather than art-oriented. The set-up is quite classic in terms of scenography, although it was nice to be able to place a dance. I missed the real African vibe a bit. Tip: take a day trip because the surrounding park is at least worth a visit.

This place brought memories of colonial relics and experiences in Africa. It definitely compares to the experiences I had in Cape Coast, Accra and Kumasi in Ghana about how the Europeans lived in Africa, how they took fortresses and controlled their turf. Its one of the places I'll recommend to any person of black ancestry. Other places include the Cape Coast and Elmina and Accra castles and forts in Ghana and Kumasi. Interestingly, lots of the artifacts, weapons, etc, that were used by the colonialists have been preserved in these places. In fact, in Ghana, you get to experience the slave routes and relive the slave trade experience till the Point of No Return. The stench, ambience, and structures have l been preserved for maximum impact.

After extensive renovation this highly charged museum is highly recommendable, careful, it is quite challenging to face colonial past and difficult ethical questions by nations, governments and people! Perception and manipulation may make any historical revisiting rather complicated and difficult to navigate - in the case of the museum in question here, a lot of thought and hindsight came to play and has resulted in a worthwhile positive outcome! The setting of this form palace is outstanding, making the trip even in unfavorable weather a great outing. The grounds alone are great for walks and airing out urban stiffness and tension. The exhibition space concept is organized with political correctness, without provocation and outright finger pointing! A bit didactic but nevertheless really interesting objects of the combination of aging stuffed animals mixed with mixed media info streams in the right pace allow discovery, thoughtful lingering and new understanding of a painful hard to understand exploitation by Europeans in the African continent. What is missing here is the remainder of the exploitation and or the ability to transform guilt into reconnection and forgiveness - naturally difficult subjects to actually demonstrate in a museum - however, the highlights were a guided tour by dancers that helped ease into the different spaces and the integration of the musical interpretation and influence of music as the most important transient source code in the rich cultural heritage of African dance and song as the root source to a great number of modern pop music and its interprets! Kudos to the curators, designers and historians - the wonderful passage underground with the carved canoe in dark wood symbolized the entry into this dark chapter of European consciousness, being pampered in the first rate restaurant beforehand, brings out our own hypocrisy in this showcase!

Not realy 1 central concept. However, the museum is trying to show you a lot of different things from economy to language, music, animals, leopold II. A little bit more structure should be nice & more info about leopold II's ridicoulous way of making belgiums economy big. Slippery floor!

History from an African perspective. The greatness of Africa is its humanity. How Africans forgive. I have a new hero Emperor Ngungunyana... he had 300 wives!

It has a significant history and culture of the Mozambican population. You do the tour and you would be equipped with knowledge of how Tribalism and how things have evolved up to date. Entrance fee is required to access the site. Covid19 regulations are adhered to.

Not really that impressive place (it’s a smaller copy of the original fortress). Worth the visit primarily for the artwork (historic plaques) exhibited inside.

👍 The Costa de Sol beach area is very unique in that it offers a very large flat area for enjoying the beach at low tide. Families with little children can enjoy very safe water play without the risk of tidal undercurrents. It is also a wonderful location for playing sport.
