It lives up to thy hype! Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of the most iconic spots in Japan and for good reason. This temple and hike is beautiful. Photos don’t do it justice. The hike took my family about 80 minutes total. We had a 6 year old and a two year old with us and both did well with all the stairs. My two year old did need to be carried from time to time, but mostly going downhill. I would say this is definitely a child friendly activity. The crowd levels were astonishingly lower than I expected. This lead to more time on the path alone and a more peaceful climb. ** I recommend bringing yen on the climb as there are plenty of places to buy bottle water, tea, and even ice cream at the view point. This temple is easily assessable by train and is located just outside of the station. **Disclaimer* My family and I went in spring of 2022 where Japan was still closed to tourist. If you are coming when the county is reopened be prepared for bigger crowds than I experienced

Very beautiful temple. The hike is about 2 hours and beautiful Shrine. We were there about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, when we return to from the hike it's about 7 o'clock and it's already dark in the pathway. So if you are planning to go for the hike, make sure you have plenty of time before the sunset. However, there was a beautiful view of the sunset on the top of the hill.

Amazing! Got there at 6:45, which was fantastic. I wish I’d started at 6am. It was so quiet, so it was excellent for photo opportunities, and it was so peaceful. I too the less travelled path, opting to turn off the main track that takes you up through all the arches, and took a dirt path walk which took me to a half dozen beautiful shrines what were completely empty, and stunning. They were so extensive, you could spend ten minutes (slowly) walking through them, appreciating them and their beauty. Really worth it. I then made it to the main path at the top of Mt. Inari, after a very tiring and steep walk up a path through the trees and grass, dodging the odd (massive) spider’s web (big enough to scare Spider Man), and it was all worth it. Again, more beautiful shrines, fantastic arched pathways, and an amazing view overlooking Kyoto at the bottom of the path. My favourite picture is the last in this collection - that of a cat watching over its subjects, ensuring we’re all behaving 😜 fantastic place to visit. Should only take 2-2.5 hours to get around at a nice pace, covering the track I walked and walking the recommended loop. Probably only an hour to an hour and a half if you don’t walk the dirt track.

Early morning hike was great! We got there by 7 and barely anyone around. We had the place mostly to ourselves and a few locals. Took about 2.5 hours for the entire hike with some time at the summit and in between for photos. This was our 3rd visit and it is just as pretty as ever. Do come early if you can so you can get the perfect lighting and photos with no crowd.

Quite unique and nice place. People hog the entrances thinking that’s the only place you can take photos not realising that for the next two hours (climbing up and down) you can take photos with the exact gates too. If you’re not much of a hiking person you can just go up half way where there’s a view. No need to go all the way to the peak cos there’s no view there. Unless you want to look at more shrine stuff. Took us one hour to go all the way up and some sweat despite the temperature being around 10 degrees probably. Took us maybe 40 minutes to come down. Lots of crowds at the check points. If I go back again I would not go all the way to the top of Mt Inari.

Really loved visiting this shrine. It is a good hike up to the top but you’ll go pass many small shrines, souvenir shops and even sake shops to just sit and enjoy the vibes. You don’t really have to come super early to get a great photo because there are lesser people higher up the mountain and you’ll definitely be able to take pictures without other tourists in it. We went at about 2.30pm on a Thursday and it wasn’t crowded higher up the mountain. Would recommend having a read on what the shrine and Tori gates are about so you can appreciate them better as you climb up :)

The walk up the mountain through the Tori gates is wonderful, and getting up early to beat the crowds is definitely worthwhile. There are lots of brilliant photo opportunities, and getting there early lets you get the best photos of the iconic gates. There are a few different routes to take, so you can make your visit as long or short as you'd like. Getting to the top in the heat can get uncomfortable though. Due to its tremendous history, this is mostly crowded place . The colourful atmosphere here is so amazing looking attractive.

    1. Absolutely magnificent place to visit in Kyoto. 2. Hike all the way to the top of the hill took around 30-40 minutes with good condition. No need worry about the water, there’s vending machines along the path. Also there’s some souvenir shops with the vending machines. 3. 5am - 6am in the morning to the shrine will let you get a better photos 4. You will get the nice photos around 530-6pm to get the sunset view from the foot of the shrine.

If you don’t like crowds or want a quieter experience go there around 3 and start your climb around 4/5pm. The thing is you can climb to the peak of Mt Inari at any time of the day or night. I got there at 3 pm walked around saw the vendors, ate some street food, grabbed a water (don’t worry if you forget there are a ton of vending machines along the way) then started my climb around 4pm. I happened to stop at the mid point and thought I was at the top so I decided to stop and watch the sunset. I then realized I was still 20 min from the peak. So I kept walking and that is when I discovered that the whole path is lit from bottom to peak. It’s was a beautifully eerie hike up and I am so glad I did it later , no crowds and I got the best of both worlds. A night view of Kyoto from the look out points and a sunset view. The only catch to not going during the day is that there are small shops and a few cafes along the way. One or two were still open but for the most part they were closed for the day. They did all seem to sell the same stuff as the bottom shops though. I had a great time at the temple and will never forget my amazing hike!

Most of the pictures here were taken during daytime. I went here at night and it was really peaceful and serene. It was therapeutic too and it gave me time to reflect in what I do and what I want in life. If you want your personal time and time to reflect, I really recommend going here early morning or from 7pm onwards. but never forget to respect the guardians' statues around and avoid touching things. climb slowly, look around, breathe, and reflect. This was one of my most memorable experiences in Japan and sharing these pictures to you all to have a glimpse of how it looks like at night. *it was not scary at all, and it was calm and therapeutic

Such a surreal experience getting the chance to walk through the thousand gates. It fascinated me how well maintained these gates are! Walking and climbing up the stairs was quite the hike! So be sure to have a comfortable pair of shoes on you. it was also nice to enjoy snacks in the front side of the temple. Overall surreal experience walking through these gates in a Forrest, I would describe the experience as magical!

This place is famous for a reason! Pro tip: don’t stop at the entrance to take your photos. You’ll just be waiting ages to take a mediocre photo with heaps of people in it. The gates literally continue all the way up the mountain. You can find a nice secluded spot easily. Another tip I would recommend is to follow the signs and stay on the path. It’s very easy to get lost and end up in farmland. A cool experience to be sure, but maybe not something you wanted to do. There are thousands of gates all along the path up to Mt. Inari and legend holds if you hike to the peak on a particular day in February, you will receive good luck. I’m not sure how long the luck boost lasts. The hike itself is primarily uphill and on steps so consider your knees. It took us about 1.5-2 hours of walking. This is one of the cooler things in Kyoto to do so don’t miss it. Can either bus or train there but I recommend train as the station is just across the street from the entrance. And the best part of all is that this place is free!

Great temple. I come here by train. When I arrive, I come to pray first. Purchase some talisman. Then walk around, take some photos on the mountain. The orange poles are beautiful. I read some history, fox is still important animal here. It is amazing history. After walking down, you can enjoy foods and drinks along the way. There are some souvenirs that you should take back, it is not expensive. When you arrive here, I recommend grilled eel with rice. The sauce of this area is really delicious.

Visited here on a really hot day, the path way was really long. We took a lot of pictures along the path, it was very busy and crowded when we had gone. Should have been more prepared for the long hike, on the way back we ran to the convenience store for an ice cool drink. Very beautiful scenery and very peaceful walking through nature.

Extremely crowded in the first 500m but majority of tourists will drop off after visiting the main temple. It would take ~2h to have a walk to the top of the mountain, it’s less crowded so you can have your owned space for pictures. Very nice view to Kyoto especially during the sunset from the observation deck. Lots of shops for drinks and food, vending machines on the way so you don’t need to bring lots of water or snacks

This is a regal and exquisite shrine. It should be called an Imperial Shrine due to the grandeur of its architectural. The tori gates are simply breathtaking. It winds and winds and you get the feeling while in the tori gates tunnels that you are heading toward an encounter with the gods! Simply Wow!

An amazing, iconic experience. What is surprising is how long the walk with the tori gates is, when you arrive don’t stop for photos straight away, walk along further and you will find lots of photo opportunities with no one in them. We walked for close to 2hrs with lots of photos. We went early (7am) to try avoid crowds and that definitely helped as when we came out the end it was much more crowded.

This place is amazingly beautiful and shows how much Japanese people respect this shrine by looking at those thousands of gates. It's so cool. If you come to kyoto, this place is a must! I tried hiking up there just half way (the first loop). Let's say, it requires some good health to do so as it's up and down the hill. It was a good hike for the first loop taking around 1 hour and a half to do so. Good exercise!

A must see for everyone traveling to Japan. I can only recommend climbing to the top via the little trail you can take a some point just on the right side. Way less crowded and through a bamboo forest, a few stairs towards the end to connect back to the "main" climbing path. We barely saw anyone going up this way, and it seems like the more we are approaching from the top the less people you see. Even if it was crowded at the beginning there is still some room for some nice photos and video without anyone.

This Shinto Shrine was especially enjoyable because it wasn't just a walk up, see shrine, and leave. It had an amazing hike with views and small shrines throughout. The hike was a moderate climb, but easily doable. There were stations along the hike with food, drink, and souvenirs. The bright orange contrasts beautifully against the rock and greenery of the area. This is a cannot miss experience for Kyoto!

This is an absolute must see. If you love walking and connecting with nature ascend up the steps and climb up the summit. Here you feel as though you are transported back in time and are in a peaceful environment. Every moment of the hike was scenic with these beautiful gates and forest surrounding you. There are several vending machines to purchase various drinks. The prices are higher than elsewhere, for example the water was 220. Bring comfortable shoes that you will be confident in ascending and descending. Even in the rain, it was such a beautiful sight. I would come back again in a heartbeat!

Probably the place I liked the most in Japan (I visited only Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka). I really liked that the whole mountain is sacred and somehow magical. You have to go up steps for 45 minutes to reach the peak where the main and most important temple (shrine?) is. All over the mountain the are mini temples and that’s just beautiful. You can also see the people who look after those mini temples and how the live. It really took me to a magic place, absolutely sacred and away from the common world.

Absolutely stunning and a definite Japan highlight!! Really busy at the bottom but keep pushing up the hill and you will be gifted with empty pathways which are perfect for some truly stunning photos. Bring lots of water and take it steady in the heat as it is a long way to the summit. When you reach a crossroads about a third of the way up, go left up towards a shrine, through the narrow pathways to see a gorgeous view of Kyoto and Osaka in the distance. This is on the maps but poorly signposted. Compare all the gorgeous photos near the top to the very bottom - worth the struggle of climbing the hill!!!!

One of my favourite shrine to visit i. Kyoto. Word of advice is to go early (before 8am) as it gets really crowded and it will be difficult to take photos. There’s no entrance fee to go in either. Although the front part of the shrine has a large crowd, this shrine was worth going as there is a nice hike up to the hill behind it that has many other tinier areas if worship. The hike itself takes about an hour (due to stopping for souvenirs and photos as well) and its beautiful thus worth the effort (a proper workout!). The hike around the hill can be done clockwise or counter. Counter clockwise (starting from the vending machine) is MUCH easier.

Probably the best location in Kyoto from my very small experience in the city. It was very crowded at the beginning, as there were many brave ones that thought they can make it all the way to the top of the hill. But the higher you go - the better it gets. The view is just breath-taking and almost no tourists. Few shops with drinks and snacks on the way. The way down is much shorter and easier. Highly recommend this location. P. S. don’t go off the track as I saw signs of wild (?) animals on the ground.

Perhaps one of the most touristy place in Kyoto and actually the best in my opinion as it boasts the thousand tori gates up to the Inari Mountain. Luckily my hotel is just 15-20 minutes away from this great place so I got to come very early - 4:30AM early which I really recommend to go as there is still no group of tourists. You may bump into 1-2 early risers as well but you can definitely solo the towers. I will definitely go back to this sacred and very beautiful place. BTW, I got to reach the mountain top the second time!

Definitely worth a visit if you have time to spend while in Kyoto ⛩️🌸 The temple area is much bigger than I anticipated, so it is easily a half-day experience if you want to walk the full mountain route through all the 1000's of gates. It is an incredibly beautiful and scenic route, therefore also a popular spot for tourist holiday photos, so there are a bit crowded with tourists. I would therefore recommend to walk the route by starting at the end, in that way you will get less tourists until the end and more space to enjoy the views and/or take beautiful photos 📸 Definitely worth the trip ! And easily walkable from Kyoto Station if you are in regular shape, else both trains and busses go straight there 🙏

Fushimi Inari Taisha was one of the best experiences I had in Japan. You walk up a mountain that is 233 meters high. The path you walk is approximately 12 thousand steps to the top and 4km round trip from top to bottom. You walk through the woods surrounded by huge, beautiful tori gates that have been donated by family's and businesses from Japan. There are many rest stops which offer drinks, snacks and small souvenirs. There are also many small shrines all throughout the hike up that are very beautiful to look at. I would recommend coming very early in the day to be able to get better pictures as the site gets very busy in the early afternoon as more tourists come to see. The base of the mountain has a very large and beautiful shrine complex consisted of a few buildings. There are many food and drink options at the main shrine. This is a must see when coming to Kyoto.

This was a highlight of my trip. Given the importance of Inari, and my love of their messengers, I'd very much looked forward to this visit. We arrived at 9.30pm, and started our way up the mountain. Around 1/3 of the way, half our group headed back. Around 2/3 of the way, we almost lost the will to continue. Once at the top though, we were glad to have continued - this mountain gives back all it takes and more. To arrive as a light snowfall began, viewing a shrine to kami as critical to life as Inari, was magical. To have had a fox lead us for a good part of the trip was just the icing. The boar on the way down wasn't ideal, but just keep your ears open, and be willing to change paths out and you'll be fine. This was absolutely worth it

Amazing experience indeed. It’s not a short visit if you want to go through the mountain tour, it takes about 2h but it is worth it rather than just staying down and visiting the most common areas. There are much less people as you go higher indeed and it’s a lovely hike in a forest through beautiful Shinto red gates. Not a forest walk you’ll do anywhere else! Beautiful experience indeed. It’s also a great opportunity to see the Shinto shrines with the foxes and the mini red gates :)

A beautiful temple complex with a moderate hike to the hill top. Very scenic and somewhat surreal. When I visit in the afternoon, it was quite packed of people. But the more you climb up the less crowded. The warm sunlight adds to the atmosphere. Love it here and hope you will too.

One of the most impressive temple in Japan, two stations train ride from Kyoto, just be sure you don't take the express train but the local train that stops in Inari. If you have a JR Pass, the train is included so no extra cost. From the train station is a very short walk to the entrance. There are lots of souvenirs shops and eateries up there. Once you enter the temple area, you are in for a long walk if you want to do the whole path. There are lots of torii gates, different sizes but in general bigger than other similar temples in Japan. It takes about one hour to go all the way up and return to entrance, there are resting areas here and there but keep in mind that washroom are only at the beginning, they consider the place sacred and that's why no washroom on the higher areas. The gates are beautiful, perfect for pictures but of course very repetitive. I'd say it's one of the busiest temples and you won't find many opportunities to take pictures without other people around, maybe if you are patient. If you are in Kyoto area, Inari should be on your list of places to visit.

It was not really crowded when i reached there at around 8am. It got really crowded by the time it was 9am, so i would advise to go much earlier to avoid the tourist crowd. There is parking nearby as well if you are driving. It was huge inside and many things to see inside. The architecture was beautiful and the history of this shrine dated back millennium ago. Very impressed! Must visit shrine! You can even pay money to get things to write your wishes and hang it.

I had the opportunity to visit the iconic Thousand Torii Gate at the last minute, leveraging its 24-hour public access. This decision allowed me to explore other UNESCO World Heritage Sites during the day, saving this remarkable site for the night. Visiting at night, especially on a Tuesday between 10:30pm and 11:00pm, presents its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The advantage was the breathtaking scenery under the night sky, providing a perfect backdrop for photos without the intrusion of strangers. However, the serene quietness also brought an eerie atmosphere, though the path was well-lit. Interestingly, there were other photographers seizing the tranquil night for creative shots. Concluding my stay in Kyoto with this visit was a decision I'm profoundly grateful for. It offered a unique and unforgettable experience, enriching my collection of memories with something truly special.

Beautiful place to visit which is famous for its thousands Torii gates and hiking trail. The hike up is mostly shaded area. I recommend you to visit there by train but not by car. The road is very narrow and crowded, but car parking is free. The vermilion colors of gates are really cool specially when the sun shines go through them. There are different souvenirs shops. Just lots of people there, do it’s hard to take pictures and snaps as you want.

Quite the experience and well worth it! The trek around the mountain is around 6km and goes up to 233m in height. Whenever going upwards, there’s usually stairs. Not so many possibilities for views over the city, but there’s plenty to see and experience. Also wild but cuddly cats. Warnings about wild boars and monkeys (don’t pet them!), but I didn’t see any.

Very crowded shrine, but the further you ascend up the mountain, the less crowds you encounter. Wear comfortable shoes as the hike to the top can take well over an hour. There are opportunities to buy refreshments and even full-on meals. We ate soba noodles at a restaurant about 3/4 of the way up. There are some incredible views of Kyoto near the top. To not be rush, set aside a minimum of 3 hours to experience.

What an incredible place and a must if you're in the area! I went there early about 6am and it was very quiet. Compared with when I left, the main entrance was packed. There are a lot of steps if you decided to all to the summit so you may only walk a small section. There is signage around the main entrance with QR codes, this will allow you to find out some information about some of the buildings (with an English option). As you walk through, there are vending machines for you to purchase drinks and a few small shops to buy souvenirs.

One of these places in Japan that you’ll want to visit! It’s a massive complex, much better than you’d expect normally. Well-maintained, scenic environment, spiritual (one can read around a bit) and fulfilling as you let go while climbing towards Mt. Inari (can be a bit steep at times, though nothing too crazy). Easy access whether on a bike (there’s a parking garage for them), or trains from Kyoto Station. Pay it a visit, tale your time, relax and enjoy! ✌️ P.s Only caveat are the crowds - more massive than expected, regardless of time.

Amazing experience. Yes very busy at main shrine. Persist past the crowds up the mountain and the closer to the top you can have a section of gates to yourself. Pursue some of the side paths. Don't miss the frog shrine, revered for progress, they only go forward! You should too.

Beautiful shrine leading up into the mountain. Free entrance with plenty of toilets and vending machines for drinks. The walk to the top takes around 40 minutes and there are lots of steps and gates leading up. It is very busy touristic wise towards the start but I found the further up we got the less crowded it became. Definitely worth a visit if in Kyoto.

We went to visit this shrine on our last day here. It felt like the icing on the cake. It is one of the more interesting shrines with its thousand gates leading up the hill. Which is walkable by the hardiest of hikers but apparently worth it. We went at night so that it was all lit up and there were less tourists. We were not disappointed. The best is probably to visit during the day and then the night if possible. The shrine does look interesting both day and night.

A Tapestry of Tranquility and Tradition Nestled just outside Osaka, Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine is a picturesque haven popular among both locals and tourists. This enchanting site, adorned with captivating motifs, welcomes visitors free of charge, though solitude may prove elusive due to its soaring popularity. On weekends, particularly in fair weather, brace yourself for bustling crowds. Yet, the allure of Fushimi Inari-Taisha remains undeniable. Allocate a minimum of 2 hours to fully immerse yourself in its charm. The path leading to the shrine, flanked by tempting vendors, poses a delightful challenge to resist delectable treats. Whether on the way up or down, the gastronomic temptations are impossible to ignore. **Summary:** Fushimi Inari-Taisha, a free haven of tradition, beckons with its scenic beauty. While weekends may usher in bustling crowds, the shrine's allure and the gastronomic delights along the path make it a must-visit, requiring at least 2 hours for a truly enriching experience.

Its looks very beautiful and very easily accessible from JR Inari station on Nara line. Unfortunately this place is always crowdy. So if you want to take a very good picture without crowd then you need to visit very early in morning like 6:30 am or 7 am. There are more than 1000 tori gates which creats an amazing atmosphere.

This place is amazing. It's so peaceful and a easy walk. Each temple shrine had its own theme. One was lucky fortune. They had prayer and music. It was great. Lots of people wearing Kimonos walking around. There is a tea house to rest and enjoy the peaceful view.

If you’re able to go then do it! It might be hard for some but I highly recommend doing the hike to the summit. Not only is it beautiful but that’s where you’ll get plenty of photo opportunities because not many people do the hike.

Beautiful~ It is quite busy at the very beginning but the further you get up, the less and less people there are~ You can get all the photos you want further on. If you want to avoid the crowds, as with most places you have to go early. Also be aware that there are places you cannot take photos or videos. I saw a few tourists being asked to delete photos they took of on going ceremonies. Please be respectful~

Wow!! This place is amazing! The thousand gate walk offers some spectacular views. There are a lot of stairs so be mindful of your fitness level and mobility. Go very early in the morning if you want to avoid the huge crowds! I got there at 7am and it was already starting to get busy however still able to get some photos without a thousand people in the background. Easy to get to by local train and only a short walk from the station. A must see! Don’t leave Kyoto without paying a visit.

This is one of the must visit experiences of Kyoto. If you plan on hiking up to the summit, you should plan on around a 2-hour experience, depending on the crowds. We went on a weekday in the late afternoon, which proved to serve us well in the crowd department, with fewer people as we hiked upward. The one thing that is worth knowing is that, beyond one of the viewing points, where you feel like you have a great view of the city, you won’t see the city again when you keep hiking to the summit. So, if all you want is the view, stop there. Otherwise, it’s just another shrine at the summit. Last but not least, bring water and wear good, supportive shoes. It’s a real hike, and not for the faint.

This is an enchanting destination that should not be missed during your visit to Kyoto. You start at the base of sacred Mount Inari and wind through a picturesque trail through thousands of vibrant red Torii gates. The trail spans about 4km and took us about 2 hours to complete to the top of the summit and back. There are convenient rest areas and food shops along the way with ice cream and other foods. The crowds were very heavy near the start, but as you ascend the mountain, the crowds thin out and give you more intimate moments with the incredible sights through the forest. The hike is paved and features stairways, so if you plan on going up to the summit, be mindful of having proper shoes. Along the way up, you'll encounter various stunning viewpoints of the city.

One of the many iconic shrines in Kyoto. It’s stunning that the expertise and the knowledge of the ancient can be so valuable and unbreakable. The slopes are easily to climb, but along the way, only one stop that is for viewing the Kyoto city. The rest are the red bricks. The shrine and temple are grand and lots of good spots for photo taking. Entrance is free.

Stunning would be an understatement ! This shrine is beautiful beyond words and well kept. The little shops are super cute as well. Of course, it’s a very tourist heavy spot, so go earlier in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the mass ! You can also go whenever it’s a bit busy, as the further you climb up, the less crowded it becomes ! It’s a lovely walk/hike to the top but it’s so worth it ! It’s a must go-to spot when in Kyoto ! Cannot wait to come back and see it again

It is a beautiful place. For the full experience I suggest to do the hike all the way up, but prepare yourself as it is quite a hard and long one. A good time would be during sunset or even during the night. During night you might come across some wild boars roaming through the forests, just be careful and try to not scare them.

A must if you're visiting Kyoto, such a lovely place! I definitely recommend doing the whole hike. The first bit can get very crowded but most people don't climb up to the Mt Inari. In my opinion the most beautiful parts came after hiking 45mins or so.

It is an epic place for any Kyoto holidaymakers. Love this shrine after I watched the memoirs of a geisha decades ago. It is peaceful, tranquil, sacred and spectacular. There are shops selling lovely gifts and souvenirs. Love the small torii I buy one every time I go there.

Great place to visit and a lot to see but crowded as all can be. Will need to have a bit of patience, esp if trying to get some of the more ideal photos. Further up the mountain to the summit, the less people so easier to get some of the ideal photos we all know and desire. But the path up is challenging with the traffic

Very tranquil experience. We came very early (around 6 AM) to not have any crowds. The shops are closed at this time but there are vending machines along the way. We did the complete loop to the top. It’s about 250m of total elevation gain with approx 4km of distance in total. We did not stop much so it took 1.5 hours to complete this.

My highlight of Kyoto, an absolute must see! Arrived at 7am and there were a fair few people already walking the track, but it wasn't too crowded. You could still enjoy many moments to yourself and really appreciate your surroundings. A truly enchanting place. The walk took around 45 minutes to the top with regular stops for photos along the way. A graded incline as steps are fairly shallow. Not too strenuous if you have a moderate level of fitness.

On my recent visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, the experience was both spiritual and visually captivating. This Shinto shrine, known for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, offers an enchanting walk that winds its way up Mount Inari. Despite the crowd, there's a sense of tranquility that makes the hike feel personal and reflective. The path is punctuated with smaller shrines and occasional viewpoints overlooking Kyoto, which add layers of enjoyment to the visit. Though I didn't make it all the way to the mountain's summit, the journey itself felt fulfilling, steeped in cultural and spiritual significance. I definitely recommend going at night because it is usually less crowded. For anyone visiting Kyoto, Fushimi Inari Taisha is not just another tourist spot—it's a meaningful experience that provides a unique blend of natural beauty, tradition, and spirituality

The walk through the Forrest to the peaking the mountain was stunning. The further up you go the better it is as there’s less tourists and you can get your pictures there.

Absolutely incredible spiritual and physical experience. Easily accessible from Kyoto station. Get an early start and give yourself the day to enjoy this adventure. Packing water and snacks in advised though there will be a few vending machines. I walked everyday leading up to this hike and felt incredibly energized scaling those steps and exploring the different routes. Please know your own body because this is a serious hike and I saw a few people who were not having a good time of it. There are several looped paths of various difficulty and a path to the summit. Be respectful as this is also a pilgrimage site. Seemingly thousands of Kitsune statues and Shrines, and watch your head for large low hanging spiders! There was some fun gift shopping at the base. I ended up skipping the train home and walking back to Kyoto city center.. as mentioned, I felt renewed and empowered. During my stay in Kyoto I met two friends who decided to hike part of this route at night (I did not go with), they said it was spooky and fun but didn't go very far in. I would NOT do that due to the wild boars, monkeys, and who knows what else.

Busy at the start of the path but the crowds trail off as you get further up the mountain. Nice mountain hike, not too difficult. Good views over Osaka near the top. Lights come on after dark so you can do it during the late evening if you like for nighttime views and a spookier atmosphere if you like.

We went during night time and experienced the whole spectrum of emotions. Tranquility, peace, sense of connection, appreciation and immense feeling of beauty. And then we've met a bunch of Japanese boars - turned out to be way more fun than Disneyland - as neither of us were happy to see each other. Adrenaline was pumping. Anyway. If you are there during night time, i can assure you that the signs warning about wildlife ARE REAL.

The shrine gates are really a site to behold - the sheer number of them leading you up the mountain, each inscribed and with their distinct colouring. The start of the trail is very busy and there are lots of people taking photos and selfies which is why I'd recommend heading a bit further up and if you have the energy, reaching the very top! It is a bit of work but probably about 40 mins to get to the top but there are different routes you can take to shorten the trip and stop at other points. We went at about 9:30 in the morning on a weekday and it was fairly busy but not too bad (no people traffic jams - only a rogue car as shown in my photos !) The higher you get, the less people you encounter and the more views you'll see so lots of opportunities for pictures. There are also lots of shrines, big and small, on the way which are well worth visiting on your journey. The stalls selling trinkets and food/drink are also worth stopping in, even if it's just to have a bit of a break!

An unbelievably amazing place! Do cater a full day here to have ample time to properly explore and admire the scenery and structures. We went late noon thinking to spend at most two hours and we were so wrong! Upon entry, you'll be greeted with several temple looking structures which are beautiful to look at! Then you'll go through some mini torii gates before you get greeted by the main character. We walked for a good one hour plus only to realize we're in mid mountain and nowhere near to completing the route. With tons of regrets we had to turn back and walk our way down without being able to complete the journey. On our way down we say many little shrines that looks interesting but we didn't have the time to fully admire and understand what they were about. So do cater more time if you're visiting! We'll definitely be back again to complete the 'quest'!

Visited here last year as well as this year both in June as we like its atmosphere and small mountain (?hill) climbing very much. Unlike of many temples in Kyoto, entry is free at this shrine and there’s many photogenic sceneries. When there’s not many visitors, it’s also very peaceful surrounded by nature. I’d recommend to use comfortable shoes or sandals & take some drinking water (though there are bending machines) if you want to climb up to the top of the mountain.

One of the most iconic spots in all of Japan. Beautiful Shinto shrine that is free and open for 24 hours (per google on the latter). We got there around 5 pm and had only about an hour and a half there. Wish we had about 4 hours. Could easily spend it there as hiking to the top takes 2-3 hours we heard (depending on your pace). It was only semi crowded at this time, which was an advantage. Not completely mobbed. There are many side shrines along the way and so much to explore. If you go around sunset they start to turn the lantern lights on so it is quite special. Use mosquito spray if you go at this time though (dusk).

Get ready for 12000 stairs, 10000 gates, a few shrines along the way, a few shops along the way selling souvenirs and candles etc, drink vending machines, no rubbish bins 😁, a few beautiful views but most of all if you go all the way to the top a wonderful experience walking through the gates and managing the steps. There is a bathroom along the way (about 5klm round trip). Enjoy the hike, don't rush, wear appropriate walking shoes.

One of the best sites we visited while in Kyoto, let alone Japan. The series of gates and intersecting shrines and temples were incredible. Nice street food options at the base in Arashyama and many vending machines w/cool drinks. Crowds were the worst part but take side paths off the main gated areas to explore other interesting shrines and areas. Monkey park is a 15 minute walk away, but the hills on Fushimi and the climb up the Monkey park showed as 50 plus flights of stairs in one day.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? To me, it's the single most beautiful and iconic place in Kyoto, if not the entire country of Japan. I've visited the country twice and made this a priority stop both times. Be aware that traveling up the mountain is almost exclusively a path of steps, so be mindful of your fitness before going. A beautiful place with a ow aura. You can get very near to the place by the subway or bus. From there you can depart to Nara ( 1 hour or other destinations). To the top of the mountain is no problem. A few hundred stairs. Take a towel or second shot with you if your going in hot weather because the humidity is high. Wear steady shoes, don’t be to naked as this is a sacred place. You can make great photos going down because everyone is making them going up. Maybe it’s better to go in the early morning.

It has a total of 14 summits in around 200+ meters altitude, each summit has a Vendo so you won’t have any problem once you got thirsty. But make sure to go to the restrooms first before the hike since there are no restrooms above the summit. Overall, it was a good hiking experience!

A must visit for anyone visiting Kyoto. It does get busy but if you are able to try to go past the first couple of "stop points" and then you pretty much have the gates to yourself and great photo opportunities. Otherwise you need to get there early morning if you want to avoid crowds. Loads of vending machines along the way for drinks but be warned there are no buns so bring a bag to take all your rubbish. Takes about 40mins to make it to the top so give yourself about 2 hours for a round trip with breaks.

The shrine is a great get away from the city as it goes up the mountain. The steps can be steep at times but worth the trip. Didn't see any wheel chair access once you past the first set of Tories. Do be advised that this shrine is very busy and populated with tourists so expect.

One of favorite tourist places in Japan. I visited this place with my Japanese friend and I asked some about this shrine history. She said this is a harvest shrine. That's why there are so many foxes statue in this shrine area to be kinda icon that the fox will protect the plants from pest attacks until a successful harvest. If you wanna come to this shrine, you can go to Inari station and once you get out from the station, this shrine will be located right in front of the station. Easy access to get here!

Beautiful spot in Kyoto. Nice to escape from the city. You do not need to stand up as early as everyone says - if you’re willing to hike up for about 40 minutes to the top you’ll always get the chance for a good picture without the crowd. If you’re at the plateau where you have decide to go left or right, take the right way, which is a bit easier.

A must see for its iconic red gates that go up the mountain beyond what the eye can see and further still.  We arrived at 6am and there were already some people there, as well as people on the same train as us from Kyoto station.  Not too many though. The base near the entrance was the busiest and most touristy, and the further up you go, the less people there should be. Most people will at least do the base area which will feel crowded if you don't go very early or late, but if you are able to it's highly recommended to climb up the paths of steps lined with gates that kind of feel like you're going through a magical wonderland.  The paths wind up the mountain and sometimes branch off in different directions and in a loop further up.  Signage isn't the best, it is a shrine after all, but you can spend as much time as you want exploring the various areas and climbs, and the many small shrines all the way up.  You're only really limited by time and your fitness level, and whether you just want to see parts of it or make a full trek around. You'll encounter drink vending machines and the odd souvenir store on the way up.  Toilets are more rare so it's best to go before you head up.

The shrine is certainly good to visit. The buildings are majestic. There are a lot of hiking and it is kind of worth it. One may appreciate how dedicated the people are carrying all those tomb stone and wood crafting around to build the structures for the gods. There are prayers stops that quite anticipating while many shops in in between to grab some snack and take some rest.

This was my second time visiting. The first time was during the day and we hiked all the way to the top which is quite a commitment. The second time was at night and it was delightfully empty. We hiked to the shin pond and the great goddess of mercy Kumataka shrine and then headed back down the hill, which felt like a more reasonable hike. We saw at least six wild boar, which was a bit scary, but also exciting. Don't go at night if you are afraid of boar. We also saw a fox.

One of the iconic places in Kyoto that you should visit during your stay in Kyoto. Easily accessible with the subway or JR. Suggest to go in the early morning to avoid the crowds. Plenty of shrines with beautiful scenes at the mountain top. The walkway is generally safe to hike and maintained very well.

A beautiful shrine to Inari, the deity of rice and business. There’s a pathway is lined with hundreds of Tori Gates (and tourists as well!). The walk up and back down takes about 2hours. The surrounding is beautiful. I should probably mention that from the nearest bus stop, it’s an uphill walk (about 15min) along a narrow street with many souvenirs shops, kimono rental shops (some require reservations) and food stalls and restaurants.

This is one of the famous tourist attractions in Kyoto. I visited this Taisha during Autumn and the place was packed with tourists both domestic and foreign. This temple was popular for its thousands of red gates.. a good spot for taking pictures and walking under the red gates also gave me a sense of serenity. A must visit place when you're in Kyoto. It can be easily reached by trains as it's located near Fushimi Inari station.

Definitely worth the visit. I went early February mid week so it wasn’t as crowded as it would be during touristy months. I recommend walking the entire loop if you are up for the walk (about 40 mins to an hour, wear comfy shoes). The crowds dissipated towards the top so you can get a pretty serene and secluded walk through the gates. They really do go all the way up to the top. There is a beautiful view of the city on the way to the summit and plenty of shrines, shops, and benches to take a break on the way. I would also recommend staying right on the way up to the summit when you reach the start of the summit loop. Starting the loop from the right is quite steep.

If you want to see torii gates in abundance this is the place to go, great place in general with multiple shrines and worth a visit. It’s a long hike to the top but even if you aren’t keen on going the full way I’d definitely recommend walking as far as you’d like before turning back

Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of the largest and most iconic Shinto shrines in Kyoto Japan. It is well known for it's thousands of beautiful tall red tori gates, which lead into a scenic wooded forest trail. Beautiful Fox statues representing messengers can be found all over the shrine grounds. Many of the visitors veer off the main trail and enjoy the colorful landscape of trees, flowers and water. It is definitely a place to highlight on your itinerary while in Kyoto.

(Translated by Google) At the beginning of the shrine, it is the head family of the Inari worship that gathers the largest number of worshipers at shrines and temples in the Kinki region. Many tourists from home and abroad visit the torii gates donated by shrines, including the Senbon Torii gate, which is said to have about 10,000 units in the mountains. There are various theories. The reason why yakitori of sparrows is offered at nearby shops is that Fushimi Inari was originally worshiped as a god of fertility of five grains, and to exterminate or show off the sparrows that eat the five grains. Or something like that, or as an offering. There seems to be a theory. A free place to visit in Kyoto and really stunning. I've been here twice already out of 3 trips to Japan. It's super easy to get there and the JR pass covers it. It's like 20 minutes from Kyoto station and as you get off the train it's only a 3 minute walk away. Visit it with respect, enjoy the walk up hill and feel the immense peace it conveys. This place is also very touristic so be mindful of visit times.

A must visit among the many must visit places in Kyoto. It can get crowded depending on the tone if year but it is certainly still worth a visit. It is best to take your time and stop and explore the side routes on your way up. The gates (tori) are beautiful lacquered and really quite spectacular when the sun shines on and through them. The walk itself is not too taxing and the view near the top across Kyoto is a fitting reward. Highly recommended

Fushimi Inari Taisha) is an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings. The trails lead into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters and belongs to the shrine grounds.

Fushimi Inari Shrine is a beautiful temple area and great place to spend a day walking through a very long path going uphill! The gates are amazing and gives the place a unique look. There won't be any snacks or food on on the path, so bring some water and snack if you need it. Once you get a certain point, you can add your own mini gate in on the mountain/hill, I wonder if they remove them or just leave them forever? I'll never know... There is a lot to take in here, so if you like pictures, this will be a place to take them. Definitely a place to add to your list when you get here, very worth it.

It had been on my bucket list and list of places to go to in Japan, so we did it yesterday. It was beautiful, quiet, serene, and awe striking. It takes your breath away to climb through history to a place of understanding. I highly recommend going. Also although I did it yesterday , I fully plan on going through again.

As I'm sure all other reviewers have said this place is wonderful, ※as long as there aren't huge crowds.※ Living here in Kyoto during the Covid pandemic makes for great pictures and experiences at these places that are next-to-empty. However if you can try this place out early in the morning on a weekday you might just experience what I have. The morning dew covering the surrounding forest, with the matching scent of a fresh new day. It's magical.

If you like walking up millions of stairs this is definitely the place for you! Im a bit out of shape so it was exhausting and we only made it up half way up the trail (after 1 hour of walking). I'd recommend showing up super early though because it gets crowded very quickly. We went at 8am and there were only a handful of people. This helped us to get some really good pictures without waiting too long. I'd also recommend comfortable sneakers (obviously lol) as well as water and snacks. The view is amazing, but don't push yourself too hard. Always remember that you can turn back at any time! I absolutely love that this place had no entry fees and there are many vending machines and small shops along the trail!

(Trip was made back then on 3 Dec 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Can’t believe that it’s been exactly 2 years since we visited Fushimi Imari Shrine in Kyoto. I still remember walking through the thousand vermillion torii gates that lined the trekking trail along the mountain, invoking a mysterious and surreal sensation, as if I had left the world behind and entered a different reality. If you don’t have time to spare and could only visit one destination in Kyoto, then it has to be Fushimi Inari Shrine. It’s located within walking distance of JR Inari station, which takes only about 5 minutes by train from Kyoto Station. Most tourists would probably stick to the lower trails as they might be daunted by the climb to the summit. However, it would be exciting and rewarding to explore the path less travelled, as it might bring you to surprising locations (just remember to wear comfortable shoes). It’s also less crowded at the top since most tourists stay within the lower levels of the trail. It took us only about an hour and a half to reach the summit and the same time to return the starting point. 3 hours might seem like a long time but with so many sections to explore and discover, it will fly by very quickly. Totally worth it. Definitely one destination that Is worth revisiting.

A beautiful hike during the day but it’s not a joke. My young kids made the entire loop - with some effort. A beautiful site at night when the crowds die down

The best place to visit in Kyoto according to me. One needs a whole day to experience this place slowly and properly. It remains crowded. It’s a very long walk to the top of the hill. There are many local food stalls available. If you have a JR pass, then you can use it to travel by train but it depends in which hotel you are staying. Please wear a comfortable shoe to reach the top of the hill.

Excellent! A must visit! It's free too! Know right away that this is a really big mountain, and reaching the top is a huge workout! The peak was a bit anti-climatic and had no view, but there were various points during the climb that had a great view of the city! Would definitely recommend! Go already!

Beautiful and historic shrine complex in Kyoto. A must see. Almost always busy compared to other landmarks in the area. Easy access from Kyoto Station via train. The hike to the top of Mt Inari is challenging but worth it to see the family shrines scattered along the trail, however there is no view at the top. Lots of vendors along the way selling refreshments.

  • 5/5 Melinda Purnomo P. 8 months ago on Google
Recommended place to visit. Climb until the peak to avoid the crowds. It can be very annoying at first with all the tourists standing in the middle to take photos. However, those crowds wouldn't even go until the top, so it was very serene at the top. There are approximately 1000 red shrines from the bottom to the top. It was very tiring to climb to the top, though. But it was definitely worthy!

The temple is beautiful. If you walk the way, you will find smaller temples but on the top, there is no big temple. If you want great pictures, I recommend to take them at the end (so at the left side) of the trail :D

Wonderful shrine to visit and admire. Enjoy a peaceful and relaxing walk through the Tori Gates, leading to multiple shrines and status of foxes guiding you the entire course. The entrance is packed with people. However, if you keep on going up the hill, you can find great spots to take great photos . It's worth the hike.

Lots of tourists. Better to go early (before 10am) and climb higher if you want lesser people in your pictures. The steps are well paved, so it’s a easy climb but endless. The top of top is a shrine, no scenic view. Overall a pretty place with endless torii gates. Great workout. Note: I heard a local telling a tourist not to sit in the steps as it’s a sacred place.

  • 5/5 Ahara D. 5 months ago on Google
Amazing place but I would recommend going at 4am to avoid the crowd. I only saw 5 people along the way and it gave me enough time to set up my DSLR to take some night photography. You can see the view from the city while going up while its dark and then when you come back down from the top see the same view but with daylight. Reaching the top takes about 1.5 hours but you can easily spend way more than that due to how many different branching paths there are.
