Wonderful intimate place to enjoy fado or discover it if you have never heard it before. The music starts around 8:30 but you need to go in person to book at 7:00 pm or you won't be able to get in!! I enjoyed a sangria jar and some tapas (chorizo and cheese). The best thing is undoubtedly the lovely experience of the performance. There is a minimum spend of 10 euros per person, but you don't need to pay extra for the music. Loved it. Highly recommend!

!!Come here for an honest review!! Every negative review you’ve read is true BUT these represent the patronage that do not belong here. They believe they are the main character and any inconvenience to them is a worthless establishment (we all know who I’m talking about). I arrived at 8:10 and I was not able to enter until 9:40. However, I knew that this was a popular establishment and I knew I entered at a very popular time so I was understanding of the wait. However we encountered people in line that would’ve thought this voluntary wait was sentencing them to the gallows. I 100% understand why people have said negative things about the doorman. Because people were so rude to him! I would be rude back to people too! Once we got inside, service was difficult because it was a small dive bar. Just raise your hand- and they will come to you! But no, they won’t dote on you. We stayed for about an hour and experienced goosebump worthy fado. The low lighting, new friends, authenticity, homey feel, and melodic songs were well worth everything to me. If this all doesn’t sound worth it to you, then don’t come, and don’t waste a worthless bad review! My advice? Arrive early (before 8), adjust your expectations, have a sip of wine, close your eyes, don’t leave until after one of the female singers performs, soak in the beauty, and enjoy- this is not a place for negativity.

Intimate atmosphere in a very touristy part of the city. First time listening to Fado music. Performers were great, you could feel the emotions in the air, energy bursting moments when the lights go down and the show starts. Food is domestic, kinda humble but tasty. Staff & service doing a good job.

A rustic pub with a family atmosphere that offers live fado music and drinks. The place where several now famous singers began their careers and still pop in from time to time today. Worth the wait outside the door!

I tried to come here the night before and was told I needed reservations. A bit annoyed cause the Facebook page didn’t say anything about it. So made reservations for the next night. I get there and I am sat down in a very cramped space. So far so bad I’m thinking. I order a pitcher of sangria and it’s delicious. I order tapas. All delicious. Then the lights come down. Front door is closed. And the Fado begins. At this point I am beyond sold. Also wasn’t surprised to see a picture of Anthony Bourdain with the owner on the wall. This is definitely a place he would have come too. So make reservations. Bring cash cause they don’t take card. And bring an open mind. It will pay off.

🌟 Tao's Google Restaurant Reviews 🌟 I was looking for authentic Fado restaurants and chanced upon this one. It does get a bit full sometimes, though during December, we easily walked in without reservations. We had a few drinks, the Mojito cocktail was alright. The Fado singer was right in the middle of the room and it felt very intimate. The musicians ended up doing a set for around 20 minutes and then I would take a break for roughly 15 minutes for people to get in. There were some mentions of spending at least 10 euros minimum, though they did not enforce this on us when we went, likely because it was a slower month. 🍲Food: 4 🧑‍🍳Service: 4 🍴Atmosphere: 4 FINAL SCORE 4

We had the best and most memorable time at Tasca do Chico. The food was good, the drinks were cold, the hospitality warm and the music was beautiful! We arrived at 645, stood in line for 30mins till they opened the doors, were sat promptly, waited a bit for our orders to be received and delivered and for the music to start. If you have no patience then don’t bother but if you are in for a true Portugal experience get there early, wait in line and be patient. You won’t regret it!

It became a tourist trap. The atmosphere and the music is nice, but certainly not worth the long wait, as there are lots of similar fado places to enjoy. The food portions are small and overpriced, the tables and seats are uncomfortably cramped together.

They open at 7 but you have to queue for about 20 minutes until they let you in. Space inside is very narrow so you have to sit down next to people you don't know at the same table. Food is nothing special, extremely overpriced for quality. They charged us 7,50€ for the little portion of cheese (see picture). The man singing fado would not even look to the public most of times. I went to this place after seeing the reviews, but honestly I don't understand. You can get better food, quality, price and fado SOMEWHERE ELSE. I wouldn't suggest this place, completely OVERRATED, seems it's trying to keep the old times.

Arrived (my partner and I) at 6:45 and had to queue for 30 minutes to get in. The venue is cool and the music (when it's on) is very good but the food is not great so don't go there expecting to eat dinner. If I were to go again I would just get drinks and a snack to cover the 10 euro minimum spend. While I enjoyed the place I would not queue for an hour, which is what people who didn't get in initially had to do.

If you're easily offended by an obviously very busy staff in a very popular establishment, then don't come here. Here, you have to go with the flow if you want to enjoy amazing music with some typically Portuguese snacks. Yes, it gets super crowded, but in some way, it's really great because everyone is really into the music and you feel in synch with one another. It's a mixed crowed of international tourists and locals. We had no reservation, but were seated at a table we shared with two other people with a great view of the musicians and the singer. Get there early to get a spot or better yet, make a reservation. Music and performance is fantastic, fish cakes are delish and the house wine is drinkable! 👍

My friend and I waited in line for about one hour and 20 minutes and unfortunately, I didn’t think it was worth it. The atmosphere and the music are great, but I don’t think it justifies the wait. We also tried the flaming sausage and thought it was extremely tough and fatty. If I stumbled upon this place and walked into live music I would think highly of it, but the wait puts a bitter taste in my mouth.

Worth the wait! We arrived at 8:15 and went in at 10pm. The atmosphere was magical and very traditional. The singers were fantastic and the food very good quality and simple. It is amazing that such a genuine place still exists.

I don't understand why all this fuss about this place? I was suggested going there in order to listen to some fado music. I am a musician as well, but it felt too touristic for me. The concept was to squeeze as many people as possible inside, turning off the lights to create some spiritual atmosphere, but it felt like the musicians or the singer weren't appreciated in the way that they should. It felt like people only went inside, ate and left. For me, musicians and music should be respected and not sacrificed in the name of tourism and money. The one star is dedicated to the musicians and the singers of that place. Only that.

Amazing fado music in a bustling small restaurant. Music starts around 8:30 (1.5 hours after opening.) Reservations strongly suggested but they’ll let you eat at the bar. Anthony Bourdain ate here.

Waited for 2hrs from 7:30pm-9:30pm before we got it. Was definitely worth the wait even in the rain. The Fado singers were amazing and the food was flavorful. Best aspect about Tasca do Chico was the intimate atmosphere and friendly service. Tapas range from 2€-15€.

Cash only!! 🪙 Was recommended this place. Walked past on a Saturday, queue was long! So went back on Sunday, queue was as long. So went back on a Monday, queue was still long! So we decided to just join the queue 😂 The place opposite the road sells cocktails for £5 in a large cup which you can have in the queue. We arrived at 7.30, queued for about 1 hour 20 minutes or so. Had some laughs with others in the queue, just made the best of it! Once inside it was pretty cramped. You probably start at the bar, standing up. Then when people leave from a table those standing at the bar get to sit down. Drinks are not cheap, not super expensive either. There is a food menu but it's all tapas and nothing vegan apart from bread and olives. So make sure to eat beforehand. What I didn't like was that quite a few tables were occupied by people just sitting there for ages and not ordering/consuming any food or drinks. Why not ask them if they want something more, and if not, clear the table and kindly ask to make space for others. Then no one would have to queue up for 1.5 hours and the business would make a bit more money. I personally loved the music. It was very intimate. Saw both a male and a female singer, they were equally good and sang with so much emotion. They sing about 3 songs, and then there is a 10 minute break to get food/drink orders in, and so on. Another thing that I didn't appreciate was the presumably girlfriend of one of the guitarists, took a small stool and went to sit straight next to her partner, where another woman already had her stool! So the other woman (a guest) had to move to another spot. This was all done without any communication just a rude look in her eyes. Then the girlfriend was scrolling Instagram on her phone during the whole hour we were there. It was disturbing and not respectful. If she had sat in the back then not a problem, but pushing someone else from their spot to then spoil the view of everyone else trying to focus on the musicians??

I went today this place, even when there were tourists (my self one of them) you can feel the local vibe. I’m not well knowing about Fado but I’m know about music and it was fantastic.

Had the best time here! The woman is an amazing singer and the security guard is a vibe! He’s the grumpy bouncer until he starts singing and wows the crowd.

Great place to get to know Fado. It is better to go after 10 when it gets less busy. Simply grab a drink, sit, and enjoy the music. Prices are reasonable compared to other venues that force a menu and a minimum charge.

Enter at 19 to book your part of the table, go for a walk later, return at 20. The music starts around 20:30. The menu is only tapas and drinks. Here's the information pill, next will be impressions. This place is going to be extremely crowded, with all seats taken, and for a reason. For a tourist, this is as much of an unique experience as it gets. The owner of the place is going to be closing the door during the Fado performance, and only letting people in during the break. All that so you can concentrate on what's happening inside, and it's magic. Just let it take you, go with the flow. Really good musicians, cozy vibe, an Experience starting with a big E.

Amazing place to experience the Portuguese wine and some amazing fado music. You need to wait to get a seat and you will sit with a stranger but it is worth the visit. Order a jar of wine or sangria and enjoy some traditional music.

Absolutely bloody fantastic! Full chicken with rice and fries with 2 X 500ml beers for €18 Fed us both, filled us both, absolutely happy

Best fado and really good sangria. May be hard to get in since there is a lane that moves only if someone inside gets out (and they can sit how long they want), but it's totally worth it. Such a nice experience

When we searched online to listen to Fado, there were very good comments about the music. We went late but it was still full. We didn't wait in line to get in. First we listened standing at the bar and during the break we had the opportunity to sit at one of the tables. The waiters were attentive and polite. They didn't charge any fee for the music, we tried their wines and generally liked them. The place does not offer you a very comfortable eating and drinking area. If you have a desire in this direction, it may not be the right place. Rather, it is an environment where curious people listen to Fado and have a drink, and when there is a break, new people come in to replace the people who leave. However, they have created this environment so well that as soon as the music starts, all the chaos ends and everything stops. The artists were really good. We listened to Fado here for the first time and we were very impressed. When we come to Lisbon again, it is a place we will go for fado and we definitely recommend it.

Gorgeous food in a lovely traditional place. We ordered grilled octopus and cod "bacalhau a bras" to share, which wmet perfect with a white Alentejo wine chilled to perfection!! Amazing atmosphere with live fados and a really good service. Owners make you feel at home. Hoping to go back with family very soon :-)

The most authentic experience we had in Lisbon. We had flamed sausage and house red wine, both were great. Two other people were seated next to us, which othervise would feel strange, however here really made the whole experience even better. Fado was lovely. There were three different people singing. The atmosphere was intimate and amazing. Be sure to make a reservation at 7 pm and come back at 8 pm. Music started at around 8:40 pm. As for the stuff and negative stuff reviews seen here, there are not far from truth. Waitress indeed showed no interest in serving us properly, but we did not let this affect our evening at all. After all, we were there for fado and it was indeed great.

Tasca do Chicago was recommended by a waiter from a nearby restaurant. Come to enjoy Fado without the dinner and a show experience. The establishment is very small yet intimate to experience Fado and all that it represents with master and upcoming fadistas. Grab something to drink and eat and enjoy the experience. Lines do form to get in yet if you're patient, you'll get in eventually. As mentioned earlier the establishment is very small so make reservations if you have a large group.

An entire experience! Super recommend for anyone traveling to Portugal and wanting an authentic experience. You have to arrive at 7 on the dot (there may be a small line!) and leave your name. Then you return at 800 to start ordering and then 8:30/8:45 for the Fado! I recommend arriving before 8:00 though so you get a seat in the front of the restaurant. But the singers turn around so you get a view in the back too! The FADO is in Portuguese both sung and spoken! Food is typical- flame grilled chorizo, cod/shrimp crockettes, meats, cheeses, wine by the bottle/half bottle/cup. Minimum 10€ a person but it’s easy to reach. Super mom and pop. Hard benches and you’re likely to be seated with other travelers. The music is super authentic and you can really enjoy it so close. They even shut the door and windows to make sure just the audience in the restaurant experiences the show. A definite must!

I honestly loved this place… it was basic and that was the whole charm!! Food was fresh & tasty and the Fado was heartfelt & hauntingly good!

One of the craziest/worst dining experiences of my life. I read other reviews just to see if I’m crazy but the other bad reviews sound eerily similar to ours. Super nice door man (seems like the owner) but the server girl literally acted like she was bothered we were in the restaurant. We got menus but no one came to take our order. We asked and one server just said “ok” but no one came. We were there for at least 25 minutes and I kept thinking “I want to like this place but why are the girls working here in such a bad mood?” After seeing them look at my wife and and I and never come take an order (not even drinks) we got up and left. It was our last night of vacation and by far worst treatment / service we experienced in Portugal. Especially considering how amazing and hospitable the rest of Portuguese are.

  • 5/5 Hannah B. 2 years ago on Google
Loved the Fado music, it felt really authentic! You're crammed into a small bar which some reviews said was off-putting but I found it atmospheric and got you talking with strangers you normally wouldn't do! The sangria was tasty too! Would definitely recommend
