Like many other reviews, the manager was the main issue with our visit here. Myself and my family visited for lunch, there was a small issue with the drinks and the manager BERATED a young staff member in the kitchen. We could hear it from the bar area. He also made my teenage daughter uncomfortable with how he looked at her. This man should not be in hospitality and in a family environment working with young people in such a lovely town. He was rude to his staff, who were wonderful and seemed to be used to his foul treatment. He was a balding mid-thirties to late forties man who seemed to enjoy lording his authority. For this man alone, I would not recommend. No complaints elsewhere.

This is a quirky old building with friendly helpful staff from arrival to departure with the usual 'Spoons menu and great pricing in between. Our room was spacious, the bed was firm but comfortable and very large. All linen was spotless white. We were two floors up and no noise from downstairs or other guests. The room was looking a little bit tired and needed a touch up, (Note to cleaners - look behind the bathroom door...) but at the price was still excellent value. Watch the parking to the rear of the building, there are now only two disabled spaces and that's it, the other spaces a little further on are owned by a neighbouring business, so for any other parking its just slightly further down the road to either the short or long stay 'pay and display', both reasonably priced.. The location couldn't be more central and convenient in this historic and interesting Welsh town...

Listen in my friends, listen in, Stayed in this establishment for 2 nights last week, very reasonable for the room price, room was large clean, bed was comfortable, bathroom was clean, the food was hot and nice(best weatherspoons food so far). Get involved my friends, get involved. You can even park your car for FREE in the Ruthin hotel overflow car park (just don't tell them I told you🤭)

It's alright. Cheap enough. Service is fast. Been twice in last couple months and both times missing items on the food order though and once they've served the food they don't come near again to check or clear. Managed to serve dessert ON TOP of the main course empties last time, which was kinda impressive I guess.

On holiday in Ruthin and decided to get lunch at spoons. Much larger than it looks, great outdoor area with nice view. Service was prompt for a Saturday, you know what a spoon sells so food was ok and drinks cheap. Would be really nice in summer outside.

One of the most amazing Wetherspoons in UK in the most central and noblesse buildings in charming town Ruthin. Staff is polite, quick and friendly. Food is expected with fast food (no)quality, but who cares. I really enjoyed my stay here

Without doubt the best wetherspoons I have ever been in, everything about it looks first class except the prices. How they manage to change buildings and keep all the character is amazing, this has to be seen to be believed, cannot recommend it high enough. Fish and chips were excellent as was the beer and the service cannot speak to highly of this establishment.

Absolutely disgusting. The hygiene and standards in the place get lower each time I’ve been. Dirty tables not cleaned properly, sticky floors, the worst steak I’ve ever had and chips that were undercooked and hard in the middle. It was really quiet when we visited so no excuses. Younger staff trying their best, older staff and assume management leave a long to be desired. I’ll never return here. Lovely building but absolutely the worst spoons out of them all. Staff need hygiene training and the chefs need to go back to school. Don’t even bother visiting unless you enjoy filth and want food poisoning.

This is not top-notch gourmet dining, so no 5 stars. But it is good, solid, dependable dining, with a wide choice to suit the family, at good prices. The food was very good, we ordered too much however, as it came in copious servings. You ordered and paid at the bar, then they brought it out to you. I say "out" because we chose to eat out in the garden, which just yesterday won an award for its flowers. The young staff both in the bar and outside when they delivered were excellent. Smiling, cheerful, helpful, and the food came fast. They were very surprised when I told them to keep the £2.75 from my £30 payment. Don't people pay tips here? 😁 An enjoyable experience. Thank you.

Not great. Cutlery was filthy and when I asked for a replacement, I was met with a big sigh from our server. Both meals were luke warm, mushrooms were raw, but neither of us could be bothered asking for warm meals given the response I had over wanting clean cutlery. Maybe that's how they get away with it. Typical Wetherspoons.

Rooms were good for sleep and clean everything you need for a good stay, bad points weather was extremely warm no real way to. Open window for fresh air and heating on too hot.

There is at least ten years since my first visit and have'nt been back for food only for coffee.Reason being that I would not recomend it,worst chips ever etc.But being a brekfast fan fancied one today hoping that things would be better.Food arived very quickly obviously had been pre cooked and been kept warm, but was only luke warm by now. The two eggs and two sausage's were good, three hash browns were just ok but hard and dry.As someone else has said in the review bacon very thin and funny different taste.Only one small mushroom not well cooked, not much taste. The amount o baked beans was so small I nearly did'nt notice them !Plenty of toast but a a small amount of very thin runny butter in a small plastic container. There was no condiment (again as someone else had said) set which usally is in most restaraunt's.No milk either when ordering a mug of tea. Bar tendar where ordered my food had a take it or leave it attitude, but was not rude as in some of the reviews. Will I be back, perhaps not.In general there seams to be a hit and miss situation here, as in some other places.

The atmosphere inside was nice and quiet. Nobody was shouting. The bar staff could have been a bit quicker to serve. The menu was varied and sectioned off making it easier to find what you wanted. Payment is taken when you ordered. The food arrived quickly and was hot. There was condiments on a table close by so the table wasn't cluttered. The batter on the fish was very good on both occasions we ate there. Both times we ordered off the smaller plate option but the difference between the fish on the two days was not the same. The new cocktail with R Whites raspberry lemonade was delicious. The only problem I wanted the drink making upto a pint. The member of staff didn't know what to do, so made me two normal sized drinks. If we are ever in Ruthin again we will definitely revisit The Castle Hotel.

Do NOT stay in the access room, it is outside the pub right next door to the beer garden. We booked to stay Monday and Tuesday night. We only managed the Monday! The noise from the beer garden kept us awake till 1am not only that the room is situated under the main toilets so all you could hear was footsteps and the hand dryers. The disabled parking was taken up by about 6 motorbikes with no action being taken by staff! I can't comment on the other rooms in the hotel, but I would avoid the easy access room like the plague. You might as well put the bed in the beer garden and have a chat! At least we managed to get a full refund!!!

    1. Food is great for the price. 2. Service is not so great and staff, especially the dyed blonde hair older lady who just can't smile and obviously dislikes her job. Rude and unhelpful. 3. Haven't stayed yet but the price for rooms and central location is a bargain. The beer garden is fabulous. Need to be more dog friendly as tourist attraction but I'm guessing this is a boring management decision which shows in staff attitude

Probably the nicest Wetherspoons pub I've ever been to. Nothing fancy, but you know what to expect with Spoons. Lovely outside seating area with gorgeous view, with quick and friendly service. I go here fairly often.

First time to this Weatherspoons. A large sprawling pub on the inside. We visited on a Saturday evening and it was heaving! Managed to find a table for 4, but we were very lucky. Tried to use the app to order food but it kept failing so ordered at the bar. Food arrived really quickly. I ordered the gourmet steak etc and it was great. In fact all of our meals were good. Prices were fair. Definitely worth a visit.

Well this place surprised me. Normally a weatherspoons is dark and dull. Here was very nice with a large outdoor area. That was very nice and the views were incredible. How ever... unfortunately, 2 bar staff let it down a little. To busy talking and on their phone rather than serving. When they did serve, the drinks were just pushed and spilt and then they acted like that was normal. Shame because it was really nice in there.

Possibly one of the best wetherspoons i have been to. Went with a few friends on our bikes, had 8 of us, we put 4 tables together, the staff happily accomodated us, we had food and drinks and it was just a great place that we will definitely be going to next time we are around.

  • 4/5 Lucy P. 10 months ago on Google
I can't comment about rooms. I scored 4 stars for location for the Wetherspoons bar downstairs because the disabled toilet is down two sets of steps and is awkward with a pram and would be difficult to a wheelchair bound person without a ramp and help, there is a walk in area ready to dine so suitable for disabled if you have a partner or carer with you, with a pram you can lift it between two people or go down then backwards. It is lovely and clean, well presented, and service is excellent. As far as I know they haven't got a second disabled toilet but that could be clarified by phonecall, the disabled toilets are very well kept. The food is lovely, and nice atmosphere.

I had a fantastic breakfast experience at Weatherspoon in Ruthin! The food was amazing, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The cozy ambiance added to the charm. Can't wait to return for another delightful meal. Highly recommended!

Fabulous position at the top of town, great breakfast, nice and reasonably priced, fantastic choice of real ales. At great prices The only thing that lets the public house side of thing down is the cleanliness of the public area, chairs and tables are thick with dust hopefully they will take note and rectify the issue.

Wasn’t planned visit and only spent an evening in Ruthin. Price for two for one night was the most reasonable we found. We unexpectedly travelled up to Ruthin from South Devon and booked the Castle an hour before arrival. The town and area is great, the look of the Castle Hotel is impressive. Rooms great, mixed grill for dinner was great. Staff, super nice, hard working and relaxed. Breakfast was all you would need to start the day off right. thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Sounds like I’m advertising spoons for commission!!! So as a negative, the only thing we found annoying with room 105 was a buzzing sound which disturbed our sleep a bit, we thought it was the next door bathroom fan, we found out it was the electric consumer unit, before going going to bed, If you take your door card out of the “slot” that keeps the electrics on, the buzzing is not as loud, it would mean not having any lights but will be quieter. We’ve given it 5 stars because after a long trip finding this hotel was better than we had expected to find. Ruthin is a really nice place to visit. The Castle is in a great position in the centre of town, parking at the time was right outside. As a sort of bonus, the Castle Hotel was one of only 6 or so of the 55 Spoons hotels to be mentioned in this months Spoons magazine and we just happened to be there!! ( I’m easily pleased). Jo & Steve.

Lovely place with comfortable beds & a great shower - just what we needed to break up a long journey! The whole place was spotlessly clean. The food was good - we had dinner & breakfast. They've a reasonable choice of on-pump craft beers, including local ales. Unfortunately, we were too tired to be able to enjoy them! The staff couldn't have been nicer either. Parking is on-street, though it's unlikely that you'll be lucky enough to find a spot in the square. There's a large public carpark below the beer garden to the rear of the building, though we accidentally parked in the free carpark belonging to the hotel next door, which is apparently closed - oops!

Came here for a bite to eat on bonfire night. The place was busy but we couldn’t find a seat. We noticed that half of the pub area was cornered off and not open. When we asked a member of staff they said it was because there were not busy tonight. More like they couldn’t be bothered cleaning that area again. We went somewhere else instead as we couldn’t find a table. Very bad service.

Staff were very helpful & friendly. Were served plenty of good coffee. However, we were disappointed that we could no longer go into the lounge to sit, nor into the lounge bar. Where has all that lovely furniture gone? No longer the hotel that made it's own statement. Although still very nice, it is now just another nice hotel. Is this progress?!!!

Great location, parking on site pay till 5pm and any extra rolled over to next day. Stay really friendly, very busy but always had time to listen. Molly who checked us it was really pleasant and attentive. Bar staff were really nice and helpful. Lovely soft towels and mattress and pillows really comfortable. Lovely bath, good size room and bathroom. Good walking sites well signposted. Good walking sites well signposted. Lots of history on display in building. Great views.

Best cooked black pudding we have had. We poppped in for a late breakfast and are extremely happy we did. The service was fantastic, the whole pub/restaurant was clean well presented and a lovely atmosphere.

We had a lovely 4 night stay here over last weekend. Initially I was a bit dubious because it’s quite difficult to get hold of anyone to speak to on the hotel reception but as in any busy venue there isn’t always a manned reception so all became clear on arrival! The room was comfy and mostly spotlessly clean - beds were made each day, teas and coffee replenished and fresh towels if needed. Service in the evening was amazing, either at the bar or on the app. One evening it was especially busy but we were still served our meals in good time. The food was also of a fantastic standard - we ate each night and ranged from the steak to a salad to a curry and all were served piping hot. We would definitely recommend if in the area.

This spoons is good, but it's gets VERY busy, and there were people with kids which is no probs but they were running around, screaming till after 23.00 whilst the parents were drinking. So it's the old everyone else has to endure it whilst they are so selfish. The food we ate here twice and it was lovely and the drinks, great, so they loose a star for not asking the annoying parents to take their over tired kids home.

We only had food with friends that were staying in the hotel, but couldn't find fault. The staff were helpful and the food was good and very reasonably priced. Our friends said the room was large and very comfortable.

Stayed for two nights. Comfortable spacious rooms that were spotless. Staff in the pub were friendly and service was good. Lots of comfortable seating. Hotel in the centre of town so very convenient and the surrounding area is stunnnning.

Great breakfast! Bacon actually cooked properly. Only slight downside was the staff were a bit pushy cleaning the plates, coming over to take stuff as soon as the last bite was in, and leaning right over us unexpectedly - which was a bit uncomfortable. It happened on two different days as well, and they weren't even busy. (I should say, I don't object to clearing plates - we even helped! - just that they would swoop on you as soon as the fork was down, without saying anything, and made me jump twice at just having a person suddenly leaning over the table within inches of my face!)

  • 4/5 Mathew W. 1 year ago on Google
The food is never a let down at spoons you get a bargain price and a good portion size. However on my latest visit to this establishment the gentleman behind the bar messed up my pint, there was so much froth in the top of my glass you'd swear there was fairy liquid in the glass. Overall though can't knock the place it's got cheap staff and polite drinks.

  • 5/5 Lynn 1 year ago on Google
Great, friendly service with lovely food. Also, it was nice to see the historic hotel where Charles Darwin visited. The only negative was sticky tables and a rickety chair, but they are minor. Over all, a good place to eat with refillable hot drinks.

  • 2/5 Jacky H. 1 year ago on Google
Ordered a steak with peppercorn sauce, the sauce didn't arrive and had to return the mixed grill which was so burnt you couldn't tell what the meat was. Yes they recooked it but then we were eating at different times. Won't be back.

No signs to state of dogs are allowed in the beer garden. We had chosen our food and drinks from the app and got told that dogs can't even sit I the beer garden, we were quite upset because no where else let dogs in either that sold food. Dogs are not allowed in at all, even in the beer garden. Overall disappointed.

Popped in for late lunch. Ordered on phone from table. Service quick and friendly. Food was good pub food. And family affordable. Lots of tables inside and out. Welsh covid rules applied.

Absolutely awful. Sat at the only table that didn't have anything on it. Downloaded the app ordered our food and drinks. Half an hour later bottle of wine no glass and shandy arrived. Asked for a glass told we are extremely busy ok but a need a glass to to drink my wine ? . Still no tables around emptied even staff were in and out. Went to the bar to get a glass. Food arrived we had both ordered steak chips and peas different sauces. One arrived with a jacket potato and sauce. Mine arrived chips, steak and peas no sauce. So hungry we ate it but chips and peas just warm steak tough. Sorry won't be going again. Train your staff to empty tables as their passing and a glass with your wine.

About as good a version of Spoons as you will find, being based on an impressive old coaching Inn bodged together with another hotel. Rooms are budget and fare as basic as can be expected. Room key cards don't often work. Located in the centre of an interesting tiny town somewhat lost in time.

Very nice place, not sure I'd agree that JD wetherspoon are the best company to own and run this place but don't be put off by that. The staff were very warm and welcoming. The food and drinks were as expected at a price to suit all. Recommended if your in the area and looking for somewhere to stop for a while.

Happened to pass through Ruthin and have a look around and seen this place. Had some great ale and a meal off the menu. Cannot beat a weather spoons for great ale and food when you are hungry. Staff were very good and attentive. Keep up the food work.

😐 If I'd never been here before I would have given it 1 or 2 stars. Having waited for fresh fried fish and chips (10 minutes no problem), the fish had hardly any batter on it and what it did have was dark brown/ over cooked. The chips were definitely not freshly cooked, all a bit soft and if anything...

👍👍 Really nice cafe in the craft centre in Ruthin. Price was decent, just over £40 for the four of us with loads of food and drinks. It's dog friendly which is nice.
