We were fortunate that our visit to this archaeological site in October 2023 coincided with a special festival of Roman civilization that takes place once every two years. It was an incredible experience that offered us a deep insight into the components of the Roman camp, the organizational structure of life within it, and the diverse range of handicrafts that accompanied these camps to fulfill the needs of soldiers and officers. We witnessed fascinating demonstrations, from blacksmithing to leather tanning to weaving, which showcased the ingenuity and skill of the ancient Romans.

Went up to the Cathedral and passed by this place. From here you can see the Lyon city view and a good spot to relax and enjoy the view. I didn’t go to the museum. A good place to spend sometime.

An old roman theatre but still in a perfect shape. Visiting in the evening by metro, the weather was great. It is free of entry fees. You can stay as long as you want. But please keep you eyes out for the stairs as it is soo steep. Beware of falling down. Overall, It is a good place to chill out with your friends.

As a part of my Sperm Donation World Tour around France, it's important that I learn about history and in Lyon the Roman influence. This is well preserved, and the craftmanship was amazing!

Beautiful ruins and view out over the city. It does feel a little surreal to be able to walk and climb amongst something so ancient. I love that performances and cultural events still make use of the ampitheatre, but some of the modern installations do detract from the authenticity. I wish more thought was put into how they might be integrated less clumsily - like how the nearby museum is built into the hills.

Quite a great experience if you can imagine yourself here 2000 years ago. You can actually walk all around - and on - the ruins of this place.

Beautiful Roman amphitheatre proving incredible views over Lyon and the surrounding area. Free to visit though a fee is required to go to the museum. Definitely worth taking the funicular railway to get there though as it'd be a steep walk!

Visiting the Théâtre Gallo Romain de Lyon-Fourvière in Lyon was a nice experience. The site features interesting historical features, and the best part is, it's not crowded at all. It also has relatively good wheelchair accessibility. You are also able to sit on the stairs, and the view for there is admirable A notable feature is the freedom to capture the beauty as photography is allowed everywhere. Additionally, the site hosts events sometimes, but the dates will have to be researched. If you're in Lyon, Théâtre Gallo Romain de Lyon-Fourvière is a must-visit.

This was a Roman theatre built on a hill! A must see in Lyon! Very well preserved and the acoustics are great! Don’t be afraid to sing or shout like it did!! :) it’s also very quiet and calm, if i lived here i would come often to read a book and just chill!

Really beautiful amphitheater . Always a lot going on there as it is still being actively used. When we were there there was a band doing sound check for a concert later that night. Our friends stumbled into a gladiator performance here. Steep stairs but not so bad. Great views of Lyon… and free!

This monument is high on the left bank of the Saône River. 2,000 years after it was built, it is still a performance venue during the Nuits de Fourvière drama festival every June and July.

Amazing place. Full of history of ancient Galia. A must in Lyon. Visit the museum design by the same architect as the UNESCO building in Paris.

Old Lyon was occupied around 2600 BC, but the Romans made Lyon one of their major centers and construed this impressive amphitheater. Its ruins can be seen even today. This site is located on the top of the hill Fourvière beside Notre Dame Cathedral. We get great city views too from the top.

Take into consideration that there are some stairs and uphills before you go here. The site is nice and well-maintained. Don’t forget to try the museum which is child-friendly as well.

Fabulous historic site that is used even today!! You can tell that the Romans really knew how to build structures to last for thousands of years! This is a great place to come to relax or take pictures.

Truly beautiful history! It sits close to the Basilica Notre Dame de Fourvière and overlooks the city. Perfect place to take in the sites. Make sure you bring your camera!

The ruins are excavated, cleaned, and exposed which is amazing. There's little info provided on what exactly you are looking for besides those rare few tablets. The archaeologists have a long way to go.

It's part of the greatest history of old Lyon city. Good for tour. The theatre has an attractive view from the upper side and people do visit it regularly for tour. The thicker walls and stairs are so attractive and inspiring.

Massive amphitheater near the museum which is pretty good and provides the best view of the amphitheater from its 5th floor.

Amazing Roman ruins partly restored to be fully functional amphitheater still in use. Free access to view and walk around during opening hours.

It's great to visit such old moments and imagine life long ago. It would be nice to have more information about what exactly the ruins are, maybe some pictures of recreations. One picture shows a sign that likes like it leads to other signs to discover what they ruins are, but when you go to those numbers places, there is nothing. VIP? Huh? They had things set up for concerts in the evening. That sounds kind of cool, but the modern equipment detracts from the history. Well so far, it was one of the few places in Lyon I've seen without graffiti everywhere. We walked down to a boulangerie, grabbed lunch and ate in the theater, a fun day.

Genuinely an awesome experience and a must do in Lyon. Easy to get to the top via the funicular and a short walk to the Notre Dame which is very worth seeing. One of the most impressive and uniquely coloured churches in all of Europe

We made sure to make this a destination in our weekend walking tour of Lyon. Very impressive amphitheatre and would have loved to learn more about it but we didn't have the money for the museum at the time.

    What a great Roman civilization!

The place is wonderful with lots of historical details. The museum is relatively small but if you want to exit then you have to get through the museum and buy a ticket which is very affordable (2.5🇪🇺). There are 3 levels of well designed sections of historic sites but with a minimum English titles. The museum is rich in all sections and with designated kids areas about the Roman era. It was a great day we enjoyed it very much.

Roman history in Lyon!? Yes! It's so much more impressive to see in person and to see the size and floor tile work. And taking the funicular up is 'fun'. 😊👍 Definitely worth a visit!

Great museum for adults and kids. The cost is low €4.5 per adult from memory. I had pre-booked audio guides in French and English for a group of 11 at no extra cost. The quality of the sound was good and the explanations very informative. The building itself is amazing, the museum very well organised over 5 floors, it has well signed stations to start playing your audio guide (a kid version is even made available), and there are many interactive stations to entertain and educative kids and adults.

Located very near the basilica, this Roman amphitheater is worth visiting. Clearly it's location required some effort on the Roman's part to plan and construct on this steep hill. Also clear is how it must have required planning and effort on the audience part to attend events at this location.

I am always impressed by the architectural design with remarkable acoustic qualities of such Roman theatres. The setting, with the enhancement of sound and lights by modern technology, offers excellent experience and enjoyment. The downside is it is open air, so events could be affected by weather.
