My husband and I eloped here, and Intipunku is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to! Truly a magical place that overlooks gorgeous views including the Apú Veronica, and several small ciudads. I would go a million times over.

Sun gate is a nice hike up to the "original" entrance to Machu Picchu. It is about 1.2 miles and has an elevation gain of about 950 feet. It requires a second 1/2 day pass because the hike will take a couple hours. Insider tip , no one will kick you out of the area if you only have one pass. Their control system is biological (no restrooms inside the park, just outside the entrance gate). I do recommend the hike. We did buy 2 passes, so we could support the community.

After a long and sometimes hard walk, a last, steep challenge brings you to the Inti Punktu, the Sun Gate. From this point the visitor is rewarded with the first view on the magnificent site of Machu Picchu, and from here on it's a "gentle" descend towards the site.

About an hour's hike from Machu Picchu - well worth it if you have the time! Fantastic views of the citadel, especially around sunrise or sunset. Be aware that it closes around 4pm though, so if you cannot start hiking by 230-3, it may not be worthwhile.

Great view on Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains and valleys from the distance. The only way to get there is, if you do the 4 Day or 2 Day Inca Trail Trek

(Translated by Google) You can't go to Machu Pichi without going up to the door of the sun, the view is worth it, but don't you think of going up to the door of the sun if you go to Waynapichu later. We suffered and we were almost late. (Original) No se puede ir a machu pichi sin subir a la puerta del sol, la vista vale la pena, pero no se te ocurra subir a la puerta a del sol si vas luego a waynapichu. Personally I found this place more impressive than the little hill top city of Machu Picchu. It’s subjective though. Be prepared for a moderate hike though.

The moment to finally climb over the top after 4 days trekking is the most rewarding and powerful thing I've ever felt. So beautiful and the trek was totally worth every ache and pain it took to get there

This is the one free hike to see the citadel from afar. The other two mountain hikes have a fee and are very difficult for those not active. It took us 45 minutes there, and the same back. Beautiful views and not overly strenuous. This is something you should do on your visit.

One of the most thrilling views on all of the Inca Trail. It's your first sign that you've "made it!" You breathe a sigh of relief and relax a moment. It's such a moment. Highly recommend approaching Machu Picchu this way!

The view from this point of Macchu Pichhu is unreal, especially after the 10k Inca trail walk. I would recommend to be at the sun gate to see the sunset, and the next day try and be inside Macchu Picchu for the beautiful view of the sun rise through the sun gate.

The Sun Gate was the highest altitude spot along my 2 day hike with Llama Path. The view is amazing. Some people are disappointed if it's cloudy when they reach the Sun Gate, because you won't have a clear view of Machu Picchu. However, it was cloudy during my hike and the view was still awesome. You will have to hike to get to the Sun Gate, and it isn't easy. It's definitely worth it though.

(Translated by Google) The view is the best. Be sure to look at the other side of the Inca road! Hiking is written in most guidebooks, but the mountains were mountains. Oxygen is thin, so let's climb around that. (Original) 見晴らしは最高。 反対側のインカ道は、必ず見てね! ハイキングって大抵のガイドブックに書いてあるけど、やはり山は山でした。酸素も薄いのでその辺り考慮して、登りましょう。

The Sun Gate, also known as Inti Punku in Quechua, is an archaeological site near Machu Picchu. It is a stone structure positioned along the Inca Trail, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains. Traditionally, it's believed that the Sun Gate served as an entrance to Machu Picchu for those trekking the Inca Trail. The sunrise at the Sun Gate is particularly famous for providing a stunning first glimpse of Machu Picchu for trekkers completing the trail.

  • 5/5 Victor G. 2 years ago on Google
This is the entrance to the Machu Picchu archeological site if you do the Inca Trail. After hiking for a few days, you'll finally see the stone walls that conform the Sun Gate as the higher part of the Machu Picchu site. You be able to rest a bit, take some photos of the site and the Waynapicchu mountain, that will look overwhelming if you included it as part of your activities that day. From there, if you got a clear day, the photos of the entire site are awesome, altought not as awesome as from the top of the Waynapicchu peak in my opinion. Then you'll descend more stone stairs to arrive to the upper part of the site, but you won't be able to start exploring it as you have to go down all the way to check in through the entrance.

We got there first light and were greeted with Cloud cover, we waited till 7:30 and still cloud cover, so we carried on down to the ancient city, we saw people who carried on waiting and they told us, we only need to wait another 30mins and we'd have seen it, hence the 2 stars, (cant give 5 stars for something i didnt see) so if your doing the trail, unless your on a time schedule, as we were, be patient, and the rewards are worth it.

  • 5/5 Wandern L. 5 years ago on Google
When hiking the Inka trail this is where you’ll get your first view of Machu Picchu. And what a fantastic view this is. Make all the effort worth it. You can also reach it in about 30min coming from Machu Picchu itself.

Amazing experience at the Mcchu Pichu sun gate. After an early morning hike of about 3 hours, the amazing first views of the Machu Pichu citadel are visible from here. The tiredness and limb soreness all disappear as the views of the citadel become clearer in the distance.

Hope for clear weather - after the Inca trail the view from Sun Gate was thick mist! But still fun and definitely worth the hike!

(Translated by Google) Machu Picchu offers several trails for those who enjoy great adventures and strong emotions and one of the most well-known and popular with tourists and visitors is the one that leads to Intipunku or Porta do Sol which is located 2,745 meters above sea level and has already been the most important gateway to the Inca city, connecting Machu Picchu to the empire's road network, Qhapac Ñan. Due to its privileged location in the highest part of Machupicchu, from there it was possible to control the access of visitors and in the time of the Incas the entrance had guards that had the objective to protect the city, currently the trail has only a tourist connotation and is known as the Trail Inca, being very popular with more adventurous tourists who take approximately four days to cover the entire route on foot. The Porta do Sol was built in honor of the Sun God and has windows and doors strategically positioned so that the rays of the sun can illuminate the entire environment during the summer solstices and every day many tourists make the walk to Intipunku, to see the Inca city from above, as the site offers a wonderful view of the citadel framed by Huayna Picchu, even from the top of Porta do Sol it is possible to see landscapes of Machu Picchu that cannot be seen anywhere else, it is possible to see the Urubamba river, the Huayna Picchu mountain and the city of Aguas Calientes and its surroundings, in a stunning panoramic view. Alternative and easier access is via a stepped trail through the agricultural terraces of the Sacred City, which can be easily accomplished in approximately an hour's walk, from the entrance to Machu Picchu.

After 4 days on the Inca Trail you get to experience this as the sun rises and the skies clear. It's an incredible reward for the time and effort you've spent over the past four days. It's something that you'll never forget - and it should be on your top ten list of morning views to experience

Intipunku ("The Gateway of the Sun", "Sun Gate") is a small Inca temple located on the pass over Machu Picchu. Ruins of Intipunku are last monument of Inca trail before Machu Picchu - from this point the ruins of famous city are perfectly visible.
