Located in the Main Campus of Istanbul University, the Beyazıt Tower was built in 1749 in the Beyazıt district of Istanbul to monitor and report the fires. The tower, which has a height of 85 meters, was originally built of wood, but was burned in the fire of Cibali in 1756. The tower, which was rebuilt in 1826, was burned again during the Janissary revolt. Beyazıt Tower was built for the third time by the architect Senekerim Balyan in 1828 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. The Beyazıt Fire Tower consists of three parts: the guard floor, the signal floor and the starboard floor. At that time, fires were reported from Beyazıt Tower during the day, by hanging baskets and by lighting lanterns at night. The tower, which was illuminated in different colors at night for a long time, was used to announce the next day's weather forecast to Istanbulites. The blue illumination of the tower foretold clear weather the next day, green rain, yellow fog and red snow. This practice was terminated in 1995 and resumed in 2010 with the initiative of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Beyazıt Tower, also known as Beyazıt Kulesi, is a historic tower located in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in the 15th century during the Ottoman Empire, it was originally used as an observation tower for detecting fires in the city. The tower is named after Sultan Beyazıt II, who ordered its construction. The tower stands at a height of 85 meters and has nine floors. It is made of stone and brick, with decorative ceramic tiles adorning the exterior. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Istanbul, including landmarks like the Golden Horn and the Blue Mosque. Throughout its history, Beyazıt Tower has played an important role in the life of Istanbul. During the Ottoman period, it was used as a watchtower to detect fires and other dangers in the city. In the 19th century, it was used as an astronomical observatory. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Istanbul's rich history and culture. Beyazıt Tower is also significant as a symbol of Istanbul's resilience. Despite suffering damage from earthquakes and fires over the centuries, the tower has been repeatedly repaired and restored, standing as a testament to the city's ability to withstand and overcome adversity.

Original wooden Beyazıt Tower, which was destroyed in 1828 by fire and was constructed earlier by the architect Krikor Balyan. It is currently equipped with lighting system to indicate weather conditions in different colors. Red colour means snow, blue—nice and clear weather, green—rain and yellow—fog.

Not open for foreigners tourist .. the guards don’t allow entrance .. not sure why there are others able to get in and take pics. Disappointing. They should put up a signage that no tourists allow to enter the universities then. It appears that only locals can get in. As I saw some old local folks walking in. But foreigners get rejected.

The university ground is accessible to the public from the Beyazıt square (sout of the university), just tell the security guard you are a tourist. There is even an information panel about the tower, just like the others around the city. However, the tower itself is not accessible for going up.

If you’re an individual tourist, you can’t get through the university security as they say “It’s closed for tourists”. Don’t waste your time coming here
