Cantonese food… good. Drinks… good. Table service… good. Ambience… good. Definitely the quality and experience you come to expect from a Merivale establishment. Staff were very attentive in making sure you’re well looked after, your glasses never empty and making recommendations based on the number of people and order of the dishes coming out of the kitchen. I would definitely recommend for any nice occasion, celebration, date night or just because.

We had a delicious diner in a very nice atmosphere. The food was really good and tasty. The cocktails were delicious. The service was perfect and the staff super friendly. The music is really nice and not too loud. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for all type of occasion. It was a very good surprise and I will come back for sure !!

Really cool atmosphere and the service is phenomenal. We have a lot of great upscale Cantonese options home in Vegas, but the approachability of the cuisine and staff made this venue feel far less stuffy or reserved and a very enjoyable experience. The steamed dim sum is a MUST as well as the duck pancakes!

Mr. Wong has got to be one of the best restaurants for whatever occasion. The food here was absolutely delicious and the portions did not disappoint. We had several doggy bags!! We ordered the vegetarian fried rice, half roasted duck, sweet and sour pork and green beans. Each dish was outstanding. The pork melted into the fork. Go for a small portion of fried rice if you are in a group of 3 or less - we order the large and have enough leftover for 3 days. The beans and duck we equally as delicious. The ambience is another reason to love Mr. Wong. The fitout is excellent and every one of the staff members were incredibly helpful.

One of the best upmarket Chinese restaurants in Sydney. The food, cocktails and desserts were superb. The place can get very busy so plan in advance. Courteous staff and great service. I’d love to go back when I’m in Sydney next time!

We celebrated a special birthday at Mr Wong's and the food was amazing. I'm also glad they have changed the booking system as having to pay up front $100 pp for the reservation for 12 peple 2 months before a booking really wasn't great and very expensive. That aside, the service was impeccable, the food was amazing and we all had a lovely time there.

Mr Wong I adore you. Big restaurant but felt private. Our party of nine were downstairs on a large round table. Cocktails good and extensive wine list. We ordered banquet no 3, generous amount of each dish and standard of quality high. Crab’s huge and deserts to die for. Staff and service excellent and attentive. Go to this restaurant with confidence with family, friends, business associates or staff. If you are on date ask to be placed upstairs as more couples there. Bathrooms good, taxi’s near by. Love your local travel guide M

I have to say, I enjoyed every single bite of the meal in Mr. Wong! Enjoying a variety of dim sum with tea / Hot dishes / dessert. From the starter to the dessert the quality and tastes of everything was outstanding. Be sure to make a reservation before visiting and try the fried ice cream for dessert! Service was delightful and very professional.

This restaurant is undeniably popular and always buzzing with customers. The bustling atmosphere reflects its reputation as a must-visit spot. However, be prepared for a 45-minute wait at the bar if you don’t have a booking before being seated. Yet, it's worth every minute spent, as the dim sum dishes served are of exceptional quality and exude a premium touch. Each bite is a delightful explosion of flavors, showcasing the chef's skill and attention to detail. Great wine list as well but the markups are quite high Only criticism is that the menu hasn’t changed in the 3 years we’ve been frequenting it.

Mr. Wong, a traditional Chinese restaurant under the ownership of Merivale, boasts delightful cuisine and a captivating ambiance. The dim sums offered here stand out as some of the finest in Sydney. However, my overall experience is tinged with disappointment. My decision to not return stems from the considerable expense combined with the underwhelming quality of the live crab I ordered. Opting for the Singaporean-style black pepper live mud crab, I had anticipated a customary presentation of the crustacean. Regrettably, this was absent, and although I might have overlooked this absence had the crab been more satisfying, my expectations were not met. The crab dish arrived with a delectable sauce, but the crab itself left much to be desired. It was noticeably meager, with very little edible meat to enjoy. Despite extensive efforts, my partner and I struggled to extract any substantial meat from the crab's various parts. Given that Mr. Wong purportedly sources its seafood from the esteemed Red Claw Seafood, the presence of such an undernourished crab raises questions about its selection and preparation process. Particularly disheartening is the nearly $250 price tag attached to this dish. As a result of this experience, I now value the seafood at my local Chinese restaurants more. It's unfortunate that despite the restaurant's strengths, I find it challenging to consider a return visit based on this disappointment.

Customers have praised the great service and atmosphere at the restaurant. The staff is warm and welcoming, ensuring that all dietary needs are met. The decor and presentation of the meals are impeccable. The dim sum dishes are delicate and tasty, with particular highlights being the spicy white cut chicken and the wagyu and truffle puffs. The restaurant receives top marks for cleanliness and attention to detail, even extending to the well-maintained bathrooms. The extensive wine list and cocktail selection are also highly regarded. Overall, customers recommend booking in advance and arriving with a big appetite to fully enjoy the wonderful experience. Alex

This was the best dining experience I have had in a long time. I thought everything was perfect. The staff were very attentive offering great recommendations, the atmosphere was great and every dish was delicious and cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend eating here. I was dining alone and they even offered to adjust the portion sizes for me allowing me room for more variety of dishes, this was brilliant for me. Alongside the food the lychee cooler was a great option too as I didn’t want alcohol, 10/10.

What an absolutely sensational restaurant. Everything is perfect. From the decor, the warm greeting at the front door, the bar, the cocktail list, the spaces between the tables, the presentation of the meals, the impeccable service, the extensive wine list and the wine decantering, the cleanliness, and even the bathrooms are something to see! It was all to the highest standard. I love that there is no signage out the front to indicate that a restaurant is in there, but when you enter those doors it is all perfectly fabulous. Our hostess ensured that all banquet meals delivered met all of our dietary needs (gluten free and dairy free for me, vegetarian for another and as it comes for our two other diners) and was perfectly placed and presented. She was on point all of the time that we were there on Tuesday night from 8pm. The restaurant was packed and the kitchen was busy but it didn’t feel crowded or noisy. What a wonderful experience for all of our senses. I fully understand why this wonderful restaurant is so highly talked about and why bookings must be made in advance for any dining experience. I suggest that if you’re looking to enjoy this wonderful experience that you book ahead, organise a drop off so that you can enjoy the cocktails and wine, go with a big appetite and enjoy the wonderful experience.

I read many mixed reviews before I go there, but the bottom line is I am satisfied. The course flow was fantastic, service was polite and professional. They tried to up-sell way too obviously but I read the review before I go there so I didn't mind and the items that I ordered extra convinced by the staff was actually really decent too. I was going to give 4 stars because of the price, but good things come with a price. Will go back for sure.

Amazing! Simply Amazing! Consistently impressive. The staff are always so lovely, friendly and happy to recommend a dish. Never had a bad experience here. Recommend a booking, but they only allow for groups of 6 or more. Best to go in a group as the meals are designed for sharing.

You know when you put 5 stars with no hesitation... yes, Mr. Wong deserves that... From the minute you step in, everything seems to be perfect, from the hostess to the person that keeps you company till you reach your table, to the waiters and waitresses. I entered this place by pure coincidence on a Sunday noon when I was so hungry with my daughter. The taste of the food is just what you need. The service is really great with the team focused on everyone making sure that every person is enjoying the experience. It is definitely a place to revisit especially if you want to blow someone's mind away. Thank you for this amazing lunch. See you soon

The decor and atmosphere were immaculate. The Indonesian girl who was serving us were very welcoming and lovely. The food was alright, I wasn’t impressed by the duck or the king crab fried rice despite their popularity. Same goes with the dessert that I had which was the deep fried ice cream.

The food here is delicious and fresh. The service is above and beyond. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The decor is well thought out and beautiful. This restaurant is a bit on the fancy side but also quite casual for a fun get together with a group of friends. It is situated in a nice quiet alleyway in the city and once you walk in the door everything is a pleasurable and enjoyable experience. There are various different types of seating to pick from and they're all very comfortable. The food is really fresh and flavourful and a delight to eat. It's reasonably priced for the location and the serving sizes were really generous. They are accommodating to alter certain dishes to be vegan friendly as well. The dumplings were some of the best I've ever had. So fresh and delicious and soft and bursting with moist flavour. I can't really fault much about this place except that the wine was pretty expensive which was to be expected. I would definitely come back in the future ! Really amazing restaurant.

Booked a week in advance for my partners birthday! The vibe of the place is absolutely immaculate. My partner and I enjoyed every meal and the service from the staff made it even more memorable. The food is close to home yet fine dining and we were left happy and full. I had organised a little birthday dessert which they happily obliged and I am so great full for that. The food was reasonably priced. I highly recommend trying the Mud Crab at MP which was worth the money as well as the raw sashimi prawn which melted in your mouth. Will definitely be going back. Thank you Mr. Wong!

Famous Cantonese restaurant located at small alleyway, reservations highly recommended. Speakseasy bar just adjacent with entrance at the basement. Shaved some stars off as food quality wasn’t consistent. Food quality: + Steamed dim sum set was delicious. + Peking duck with wrap was very juicy and tender. + Kung Pao chicken was tender and tasty, but not spicy. - Avoid crab rice, fried crabs don’t taste like crab and the rice was rather bland. Very disappointing. Food portion / Price: + Portions are reasonable and sufficient for sharing amongst 2-3 persons per dish. - Prices are high around $40/dish, in line with Australian restaurants main course dish. Service: + Attentive and waiters/waitresses do remember your requests and are alert to when new person joins the table, even though they’re so busy serving so many tables. Crowd: - Very crowded even on weekday night, reservations are a must! Payment: Cards accepted with 1% card surcharge.

This place is fantastic. Runs like an extremely well oiled machine. Huge venue, but very organised. The staff and service were amazing. We had Maddison as our waitress and she was particularly fantastic. Attentive, friendly, and helpful. The food and cocktails were all to die for. I'd love to come back here again!!

Mr.Wong was fantastic. Everything from the food to the service. So much so that we came twice in one week. We came once for lunch and once for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious and they were very accommodating with food allergies which was great. The staff was very friendly. Highly recommend coming here for either lunch or dinner and make sure to try their Mr. Wong’s fried ice-cream for dessert.

Went here as a visitor coming from New Zealand and left the place disappointed that we don’t have anything equivalent! The ambience and vibe was great, really felt trendy but not too pretentious. The service was excellent and not too over bearing, they even added an extra dumpling to share for 3 people since the dish only had 8. And the food itself, delicious and a fun twist on classic Cantonese food. The truffle menu was fun, but the classic menu had a few good hits. The sweet and sour pork hock and the pig ears were a standout! The overall experience was great and I understand why you need to book in advance!

Mr. Wong not only serves amazing food but also has a fantastic ambiance and is a hidden gem for steamed dim sum and duck pancakes. Their steamed dim sum is delicate and bursting with flavor, while their duck pancakes are perfectly crispy and savory. A truly delightful culinary experience! The stylish decor and vibrant atmosphere create the perfect setting for a memorable dining experience. Finish off your meal with their deep fried ice cream. You'll love the combination of delicious food and a great vibe at Mr. Wong!

Good modern Asian food, not wow.. I would go back to golden century once they reopen Peking duck, duck sliced too thick, no separation between meat and crispy duck skin Fried rice is good, just need more wok hay(work char) And other dishes no pics, pretty standard

Mr Wong Cantonese restaurant is another Merivale success. The space and decor is enchanting. There are two levels with creative seating for intimate dining and large group bookings. BBQ duck is one of the specialties but the menu is extensive as is the wine list. We ordered the banquet, the food just kept coming, and we’ll be going back for more 👍

Can you book online? Yes you can - but it will cost you $100 per person (non-refundable) for the privilege. I would give 4* except for their policy of requiring a non-refundable deposit of $100 per person for online bookings. You would be hard-pressed to spend $100 per person for dimsim lunch. Our bill came to $120 for 2. Don't use Covid as an excuse for your profiteering. The only way to avoid the deposit is to arrive early as walk-ins which we opted for but then you may find you are waiting in inclement weather. The food was fresh and hot and arrived within 15 minutes of ordering however you would expect this based on the exorbitant prices ($15-25 per dish for 3 pieces). The waiters aren't particularly attentive either - go to any other yumcha restaurant and the teapot will be refilled within minutes of you placing the teapot lid open on top. The best value for money were the desserts: $23 for a huge fried ice cream ball and $20 for the chocolate coconut. Will not be going back until they abolish the deposit requirement for online bookings.

First time at this restaurant. It was very busy and booking is essential and pleased we booked our table for 4. Our waitresses were Amelia & Marta and Georgie provided the wine. All the staff were awesome 🤩 The food was amazing especially the duck and pancakes. We really enjoyed our visit however be prepared for the several flights of stairs to navigate around the restaurant.

Very good food, atmosphere and staffs. Specially with Pipi Xo sauce, it is big and not salty sauce at all. You can eat it even no rice! 🤤🤤🤤 I will come back to find out about dumping at lunch, it's very interesting combination.

Overall I had a decent experience here. Lets start with what I liked. The service given was good. Drinks were good but a little pricey. I liked some of the dishes as well. The pippies were great with the vermicelli but the sauce is definitely different to how it's done at other restaurants. A little more milder. I enjoyed the roast duck soup. I really enjoyed the King crab fried rice with all the crispy bits. The desserts were good. The deep Fried ice cream was quite the spectacle but the weakest dessert. The mango dessert was good along with the raspberry one as well. Now to the things I didn't like. The Peking Duck was definitely not to standard. Most pieces did not have crispy skin and fails that test. I also find the lobster to be too expensive, and was only ordered as a friend definitely wanted it which was fine. At the time of this post, the lobster was 319 per kilo, pippies were 99 per kilo and mud crab I forgot was either 150 or 250 a kilo. I did try to call the restaurant beforehand to get the price but was met with someone working at head office who didn't know the prices. Overall it was a good dining experience bar 2 or 3 things. Would have been 140/head if the lobster was not ordered but came to 200ish. If you're after a good Chinese meal I'd go to a more traditional Chinese restaurant instead.

We came here for lunch (you need to book in advance) and were very pleasantly surprised by the great service. We had great duck and king crab fried rice, amazing dim sum and they had a great selection of wines. I will definitely be coming back for dinner, the venue is quite beautiful! I can recommend!

  • 5/5 Carolina A. 7 months ago on Google
For me, it is the best Chinese restaurant in Sydney—a great variety on the menu with all the classics. The food is perfectly cooked. The duck for the pancakes was juicy with crispy skin. I love the Crispy skin chicken, Maryland, Angus beef cubes Wok fried with Kampot black pepper & onions. The Mango pudding with coconut tapioca, lychee granita & mango pearls was a surprise dessert that we loved. Very refreshing. Not to mention the staff was extremely friendly.

Contemporary restaurant with nice deco and bustling atmosphere. Food is pretty good except that it’s a bit salty, good wine selection. We had a few dishes and steamed tooth fish is the best, roast duck is pretty average, avoid the Ma Po Tofu as it’s starchy and salty. Book in advance recommended as it’s very popular.

Came here to celebrate a friends birthday with some yum cha! The service is impeccable, and the dishes are on point. Quality and flavours are all there as you would expect. We were disappointed with the Peking duck pancakes as we heard so many good things, but the skin wasn't as crispy and juicy as it should be. The stand outs from this experience was definitely the Char Siu and fried rice was divine. Highly recommend getting these two as it's definitely a crowd pleaser. If you are considering coming here to dine, do note its not your typical yum cha restaurant and to treat this as the fine dining of yum cha.

  • 4/5 Anisa A. 10 months ago on Google
Decent Cantonese food. We got the steamed dim sum platter, which consisted of a good selection of 4 kinds of dim sum pairs: lobster caviar, mushrooms, king prawns & bamboo, and mushroom chicken. Would recommend the first two; the latter two didn't wow too much. The peking duck was cooked well though the skin wasn't as crispy as I would've liked. The special fried rice was good, albeit a little too oily. Service and ambience were excellent, price on the higher end.

Second time dining at Mr Wong, still lives up to its reputation. Went there for lunch time as walk ins to try and got a table and was greeted by our waiter Sarah right away and explained the menu to us. Sarah was excellent at looking after us the whole time through our lunch. There are plenty of varieties of dishes and each dish we had was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend will be returning to Mr Wong. Thank you again Sarah for your outstanding service

We cannot wait to come back! All of our main courses were superb and the staff were great! My only negative was that we had a minimum spend of A$100 per person which meant we were a bit full and still A$80 off the total. We had a couple drinks (great!) and the deep fried ice-cream to make up the rest. The ice-cream was the only dish that I didn't enjoy. I'd still definitely recommend giving Mr Wong a visit!

An absolute Gem ! Went there for dinner with my friends, everything about this restaurant was perfect. The ambiance is so beautiful, it gives that old rustic vibes, the lights and the music everything complimented each other. A perfect fine dinning experience. Really nice. Food was delicious, the Mapu tofu and pork mince was the star of the meal. A bit pricey but worth it. The service was great, loved every staff there who served us with great smile and so nice of them for helping us out with the menu. Also, there was a whole thick book sized menu for only wines, which was crazy. We didn’t have to wait long for the food too considering it was so busy. Overall the experience was great. If you are in Sydney, You must try this place 👍🏻 Definitely recommend!!

Good atmosphere, nicely decorated restaurant, with interesting bathrooms too, but the food is probably a bit overpriced for what it is. The dim sum platter was nice but the staff didn’t really tell us what each one was. The special fried rice was nice but not that “special” - I did however like the ratio of the rice to the veggies and meat, and that the rice wasn’t too dry or too moist. We got the crispy eggplant, which I really liked, and thought the sweet ish flavour was unique and texture was great! Finally, we got the kung pao chicken. I was expecting a larger serving, but I guess I should have known better. The dish itself was nice, but a larger serving would have been appreciated. Overall, I think it was a good experience but overpriced for what it is. It is more like a modern (or to be completely honest, “white washed” Asian restaurant), and I would definitely have to say that authentic Asian restaurants probably have better flavour at lower prices. You’re probably paying for the name of the place and maybe slightly better service.

Top marks for service and atmosphere! I love everything about the look of this restaurant. We visited for lunch and the dim sum dishes were delicate and tasty. My favourite was the spicy white cut chicken and the pastry on the wagyu and truffle puffs was light as a feather. The Peking duck wraps didn’t have skin as crispy as I had hoped but overall we enjoyed our lunch very much.

A simply incredible dining experience. The best Cantonese food available in Sydney. Could not recommend a better choice in finer dining.

Mr Wong is well located in Sydney City. Clean wholesome Asian food. Well mannered wait staff fair pricing and just great exotic food. You may need a booking for weekends but you may also try your luck. I love this place.

Absolutely loved Mr Wong, the experience is exceptional by itself, then you add the food which is so delicious. The mixtures and textures in their dishes just work so well together. The sweet wasabi that came with the Kingfish is the best condiment I've ever had. The Bugs and the fried rice are unreal as well as Mr Wong Chicken. I am going back as it was great.

As someone who has anaphylaxis and sever allergies to nuts and fish, I was super impressed by how considerate the staff and chefs were. The food and drinks were amazing, and the floor staff were super attentive even though it was packed (on a Wednesday night, even!) On the pricier side but worth it for special occasions as you won’t be disappointed.

Delicious Chinese food with attention to culinary detail such as complex flavors and varying textures. Their food is very photogenic and something to enjoy for a celebration. Would recommend this place for a semi fancy or special occasion! They also have very unique and tasty drinks.

11/10 would recommend!!!! First visit after the pandemic restrictions had eased and Mr Wong hit the ground running. We had a booking for 2 people at 8:30pm on a Sunday night and the place was packed (all within Covid regulations).....on a Sunday. As with every restaurant this side of the lock down, they are running a shorter menu than usual, and that's the only thing that has changed. What is still the same? Top class service. Best modern Chinese food you will find anywhere. The venue screams with rustic oriental charm. The flavours..... OMG the flavours! Can't wait to get back....

Awesome food. My wife and I really enjoyed the meal after the musical at the Opera House. It doesn’t look like a Chinese restaurant. We tried course menu as we can enjoy 9 dishes plus full dessert for each person. Downside of this restaurant is no bookings for two persons and two hours limitation. Revisited in June, 2020. Due to COViD19, the restaurant serves the limited a la carte (popular ones) menu, no course menu. But enjoyed the meal, full of people.... unfortunately our order seemed to be forgotten and long waiting time.

?????? oh my duck...keep coming back for the Peking duck. So good. They take my order notes seriously, which is appreciated. The customer benefits getting a great dish and the restaurant wins by getting good feedback.

👍 Best restaurant for South Indian dishes. Worth a try of Biryani. Tried Tandoori Soya today and it was the best I ever had here. Egg65 Biryani was so tasty. Crispy Baby corn was bad seemed like it was not fresh. You should not let your standards drop.
