I've stayed at over 200 hostels and this old disgusting "hostel" is by far the worst. I honestly enjoyed rat and cockroach-infested places more. Rooms stink ! If it's not of damp it's weed. The kitchen is gross ! Then there is the residents, if you are French or Spanish speaking and want to hang out with an abnoxious group of loud, guitar playing, door blocking ******** then this is the place for you.

Avoid!!! We booked a 10 bed dorm in the ‘backpackers’ hostel and were put in a 6 bed dorm with 2 old men who had been living there for the last 3 months and treated the room awfully. The room very clearly hadn’t been cleaned by staff the whole time, everything was filthy and smelt like stale smoke. The pillows and mattresses were brown instead of white. We went to talk to the receptionist about cancelling our stay but as it was the end of his shift we had to wait till the next day. The common areas were filthy, people smoking inside, nothing seemed to be managed well or cleaned at all. We checked out 4 nights early after 1 night. Worst place I have ever stayed.

Went to stay on Queens Birthday Holiday in June 2022 and reception of the people and staff was fantastic. The travelers are mostly young international travelers and are very friendly. Nice affordable price and the place is well looked after. You will get good prices if you book dorm rooms, as there is no point getting a private room if you want to mix with other travelers.

I moved from Secret Garden because the kitchen was small and noise to this one that had better reviews. Pro: Big kitchen, Plants, Breakfast, 2 private bathrooms. Cons: NO respect of quiet times in the night! Latinos and French people just talking and yelling until 1am. There are showers but not sink jn the common bathrooms. Latinos just talking all the time.

Terrible hotel! Room was a disgrace riddled with cockroaches ants everywhere also crawling up the bed! Can’t get any sleep because people sit out in the courtyard(below the private rooms) til all hours in the morning. Kitchen was so unhygienic so dirty, loads of gone off food in the fridges. Staff are not helpful whatsoever, never in the office when you need them have to call their phone to come down to you, just leave you waiting. Never will i return an absolute Kip!!

This place is horrible in almost every way. It is infested with bed bugs, rats and cockroaches. The kitchen is always dirty and sometimes the bathrooms would also be filthy. I met wonderful people there though and it is located in a good area of Sydney. The managers (owners) were quite rude sometimes, not Jason. Jason is nice. They double the weekly rent during holidays such as Xmas and New years Eve week be careful with that.

Can be super loud at night so not amazing if you're looking for somewhere to have an early night, but very sociable, and very good value for a private room.

Location is really good Many french and latino people. They do like to drink at night so if you wake up before the cleaning crew there’s a lot of alcohol bottles As with all of kings cross, roaches and rats. Staff was nice and helpfull

We came from a really long trip and have paid the private rooms and they told us that they don’t have any unoccupied rooms. This mistake is unacceptable. We had to find a new place to stay in and that was actually stressful! I cannot recommend it!

This hostel gave me bed bugs, with bites all over my back, arm and face. When I addressed the issue they gave me a private room for the night (which the next day came out with more bites - so also had bed bugs) AND still charged me for the stay despite giving me bed bugs. I had just travelled around southeast Asia and didn’t have any issues with bed bugs or hostels and yet in the cosmopolitan city of Sydney I got bed bugs here which clearly shows the hygiene at this hostel. The manager was very unsympathetic and I was very disappointed with my stay here. The only good thing about this hostel is that its in a good location that’s central everything.

It was a great experience staying at this hostel, people very nice, staff very kind and servicial, clean place (bathrooms and kitchen). There is an entertainment room where there is a big TV, a lot of books, movies and boardgames, there is also a ping pong table. The location is perfect for everything, either by walking or taking the train. I would get back definitely.

It is a party hostel. In the courtyard which most rooms face people drink, listen to music on their Bluetooth speakers and scream around until 11pm during the week and 1am on the weekend - every day with no exceptions. Night managers are just young jobbing backpackers as well who don’t care. If you are an 18 year old party person, who wants to socialise this is the place for you. For anyone else I can’t recommend it. Only reason for 2 stars instead of 1 star is the good location and the fact it was rather clean.

This place was nice but very messy, no one is throwing anything out from previous travellers so the rooms were full of old junk and the fridges with rotten old food. i read the label on the bag next to mike and it clearly read check out as over a month before I got there... very crammed place but still good vibes and good location. Prices the same as nomads sydney and I would defs recommend them more as far as space and cleanliness goes

Best backpackers i have ever been to. Good service, management, staff and food. They offer free dinner and breakfast oftenly. Great place for a stay and making new friends.

Beautiful hostel with free breakfast and free dinner three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday). The rooms are clean and tidy, just the mattresses are quite hard. Clean kitchen and bathrooms. Very friendly manager that is always there if you need anything! Pricing and location are perfect aswell! Would def come again.

The hostel is celan and all the staffs are so nice and friendly. And many activities available here. Also supply breakfast and some drinks and food. The kitchen is very clean and very functional.

Very nice hostel at a nice location just a few meters from King’s Cross. The staff was very kind and helpful. I liked the overall atmosphere, very family-like.

AVOID!!! Totally disgusting place only positive thing I can say it was near railway station to make my exit. I couldn’t stay there so left after seeing room. Private room poorly maintained and certainly NOT clean. Mould, fire alarm hanging off ceiling and common areas filthy. Other reviews can’t be genuine and it is a disgrace to represent Sydney in this fashion. Photos did not honestly represent what you see in real life. Shame on you!!! Will follow up with fire department as I felt it could be a death trap so many smokers and exits questionable.

Room are a mess, 10 people within 15sqm seems crazy. Then, they try to stole you everyday: pay for a smaller but get the biggest room or pay one day more without any explanation. Be worry guys!!

The bed and bathroom was clean, and in good repair. The staff were helpful and friendly. I love this hostel

Positive : Friendly staff, great location(2min from train station) , chilled atmosphere Negative : My room was like a sauna, only 1 window with nonairflow. Also full of coackroaches and spiders because there wasnt any insect nets. Had to walk down 2 floors to use a toilet. Shower had mold

I stayed here for 4 nights and all the people who helped me at the counter have been friendly and helpful. My single room was clean and spacious upon arrival. The only thing is that ita next to the kitchen area which can be a bit noisy at night. In general, i did enjoy my stay with original backpacker. Will definitely come back

Nice hostel! Really cool atmosphere and a good place to get to know new people. The staff is always very friendly and helpful (greetings go especially to Greg the nice guy from the reception ;) ). The rooms and facilities are clean and the prices are definitely fair. All in all a good hostel :)

I’ve stayed 3 nights at this place to visit Sydney. My plane landed at around 11:30 so I arrived to the hostel at around 12:15 and it was a real pain to get someone at the front office. Their front office is closed between 12 pm and 5 pm from what I remember, 4 phone numbers were written on the door if no one would be there and 3 out of 4 numbers didn’t answer. One last number answered and the guy couldn’t do anything because he was in Brisbane. We finally got someone after waiting 25-30 mins (2 other persons were with me). I was meant to be in a 8 beds dorm for girls and I just ended up in a 4 beds dorm which was alright. Pretty clean, mini fridge, locks and heater available. The plug was almost broken though. I was given some tableware and my coffee cup was still dirty (big coffee stain it seemed). Also, that’d be nice to get an extra blanket during winter. The bathroom was perfectly clean, got hot water with no problem. I really didn’t stay much at the place as I was leaving in the morning at 6 and coming back at 9 pm. So yeah globally it wasn’t too bad for a 3 nights stay.

Such a wonderful hostel. The staff are super helpful and welcoming. There’s a real homely vibe. They offer beautiful dinner three nights a week and yummy pancakes on Sunday morning. The location is ideal in the heart of kings cross. I would highly recommend original backpackers.

The Original Backpackers residence is a great place for our typical low-budget backpackers. One thing I noticed straight away is the great vibe and positive atmosphere all around. The rooms themselves might not be the best in class, but we're in a low-budget backpackers environment! There is a shared kitchen and an outdoor 'chill area'. This place is highly recommended for individual backpackers, as it is an ideal setting to meet like-minded travelers. I stayed here as a couple - with my girlfriend and enjoyed this stay as well. We had a single room, which is equiped with a fridge and a great shower. As for the noise: The hostel is definitely working on this, as there were a lot of signs everywhere, warning the guests to keep the noise down during the nights. This actually happened, as it was very quiet during the nights. Only thing we did notice was the smell of weed every now and then, but that's about it. Would highly recommend! (Not the smell of weed, but this hostel)

I stayed at the original backpackers in a private room and it was a really great! It was exactly what I had anticipated from the website, great value & really central (in the heart of one of the coolest areas of Sydney) right next to the train station and in a funky neighbourhood. The staff were straightforwardly cool and offered advice when asked and there is a community of workers and travellers staying in the backpackers. I recommend it for an affordable stay in Sydney when you need to be in the heart of things and want the best price for your stay. It’s the best place to get a lay of the land if your coming to Sydney for work as I was or for pleasure!

When we arrived we were told our confirmed reservation was cancelled. Didn't even get an email about this. Not even a friendly apology after this.

Extremely disappointment! It was the worst hotel experience in Sydney. The check-in time in confirmation email did not match the reality. Failure to inform us of check-in requirements at the time of booking and prevented us from checking in. When we asked for a refund on site, the staff said they needed to apply via e-mail and wait next day. However, the official website can not even find the order and refund button, how inefficient! Highly not recommended.

Fantastic hostel I have stayed at the backpackers many times while I’m in Sydney and is a great hostel for backpackers to meet. The staff are very friendly and the hostel is a great location.

Where do I start… I began working for this hostel and living there, management is the worst I’ve ever encountered. I was new to this job and was given zero help or guidance whilst working here, after multiple times asking this wasn’t acknowledged. Loud hostel and no control over people living there. I also was squared up to in the kitchen by a worker regarding a frying pan! Nothing nice to say about this hostel besides the amazing travellers I’ve met. 100% couldn’t even pay me to live back in this place and be treated the way I was. Good luck to staff in future, you’ll need it

This hostel has a great location; it’s conveniently situated for accessing various points of interest. The staff is very friendly and helpful, always willing to assist with anything I need, which has made my stay very enjoyable.
