The hostel was very dirty upon arrival. I didn’t want to touch anything and felt uncomfortable even sleeping in the bed. It was very hot at night and the noise level was loud it was hard to sleep. It’s right by a busy road, bars and a maccas. The hostel has signs up that states it’s not a party hostel but it definitely is. If you are wanting a vibe of party and binge drinkers around and don’t mind the filth, this place might be for you. I will say the location being so close to the beach is nice. But you can stay at much cleaner quieter places and still be close to the beach. Edit// this is a response to the owners reply. I’m giving this review regardless of me having been hired initially as a woofer. Yes, i reckon i should’ve come to you about these concerns and this has been a great lesson into not being shameful for addressing my views. I have taken a lot from this experience and will voice matters from the start rather than posting on fb a place that is cleaner. With that said, i hope you give value more to your hostel and implement your ground rules. Negative reviews are constructive criticism. We all have a-lot to learn!

Extremely expensive for what was offered. Only two toilets for women, bathrooms were very unclean. No storage for personal items. Rooms were crowded with no way to charge phones except a powerboard strewn in the middle of the floor. Bunks were very squeeky and welds were severed on many making them unsafe. No ladders or sides on the bunks. For $67 a night (on sale) in a room of 10 people they're making $670 per room per night, with 9 rooms in the hostel. These guys are raking in the cash and can't even provide basic services like having enough outlets in the room for the number of guests or providing enough toilets/showers. Reception is at the top of the building so you have to go up 6-8 flights of stairs. Narrow hallways, and smells of wet laundry because the dryers have no external exhaust. You'd get more value for money sleeping in your car. On road parking they claimed to have was ticketed. I booked because the reviews are good, but honestly I think that's just because a bunch of European youths who need "cheap" accomodation honestly don't know any better. That's my honest review. Would not stay again.

the hostel was very dirty, the kitchen, the rooms, the mattresses. A girl cleaned the common spaces once a day but it wasn't enough, people leave their dirt on the table and don't wash the dishes. The rooms are too small without having space or lockers to leave your things. The location is very good, in front of the beach and near the center, if they kept it clean it would be very nice. In any case, the girl at the reception was very kind about the return of the money and the cancellation of the stay but she never was clare with this money, because one week later i was cheking my credit card resume and i realised that the hostel used my card whitout my permission. I call to the hostel and i sent emails but they don’t help me o explain to me what happended. Also there is never anyone at the reception, there is only one girl from 8 to 10 in the morning from Monday to Friday and the rest of the day what? I hope this message will help you to improve. Cheers

I had an amazing stay at Mad Monkey Coogee Beach over the new year. The staff were so great and helpful. I love that the location is right on the beach, I had an amazing sunrise walk along Coogee. The town also feels really homely and there are plenty of shops and bars. The room was neat considering there were 12 beds and I was able to sleep well.

I didn’t really enjoy my stay here, having stayed in many hostels throughout Australia I found this one to be the most uncomfortable. I stayed in one of the “apartments” which offered more space but also space for noise. People in the rooms staying up until 4/5am drinking and playing music ect in the apartment area which kept me up, barely slept for 3 days. Most people here seem to be extending and staying for long periods, leaving the rooms messy. Toilet and shower area were really small. Kitchen and common area also really small and not fit to accommodate 100 plus people. Heaps of dirty dishes always in the sink, not looked after by the guests. Also no air conditioning so rooms get super hot. Unfortunately I had checked in for 8 nights but ended up leaving after 3, unable to get the remaining nights refunded. Appreciate that hostel life can be what you make it, but I do think there are several issues that need addressing at this place. Coogee is a decent area but nothing special.

After traveling in Australia for a year I can say that this is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in! The staff is so friendly and makes you feel right at home when you first arrive. Millie on reception was so great at making you feel welcome and included with any events at the hostel. My personal favorite is the pool tournament held just downstairs at a cute bar/restaurant with delicious cocktails! Meg in housekeeping did such a great job cleaning my room and didn’t hesitate to offer me recommendations for around coogee. This hostel was perfect for a solo traveler as it was so social and the staff is amazing! Can’t beat these beach front views😍

Stayed here for 5 weeks in September/November 18. Overall had a great stay. Positives: - The hostel is very social and has a decent common area/kitchen. With lovely morning beach views and a balcony - Great place to meet new people - Location is right by the beach front - The staff are all friendly and helpful. - Some of the rooms are nice, with windows/balconys and space to socialise. - Sometimes free food is handed out like bread and noodles - Decent showers (would benefit from shelves though) Negatives/things to improve: - Some of the rooms are terrible and not shown on the website. No windows, only a couple of power outlets for chargers with extensions all over the room. No decent bedside lighting. Beds falling apart. General grimness - I saw staff emptying the hostels own recycling/waste in public bins - Lack of freezer and oven - Abysmal Wifi - Expect cleaners to arrive in your room with no prior warning, usually first thing in the morning when everyone is in bed - Shared space closes too early - means people move into rooms and make noise there instead. The kitchen doesn't open early enough for breakfast before work - Small beds - No hand drying facilities in bathrooms - Bed rates get super expensive in peak periods - Minimal washing facilities - No working bedroom fan or aircon

Had a great time at the Mad Monkey Coogee! The location can’t be beat and it’s easy to make friends and meet your fellow backpackers at this hostel. There have been a few hostels that I’ve been to where it’s a bit cliquey, or it’s more like a hotel, but this one is a smaller hostel with a chill vibe, if you want to meet people and make friends, you can, or if you want to keep to yourself, you can do that. There’s a bus stop across the street that gets you pretty much anywhere you want to go in Sydney not to mention the beach. The hostel is cleaned every day, and luckily we had a pretty good group on both of my stays that cleaned up after themselves, but as with any hostel, every now and then you get someone less considerate in. I couldn’t recommend this place more to anyone who wanted to stay.

Pros: - Clean facilities (cleaners working around the clock cleaning the shared areas and bathrooms) - Location (perfectly positioned hostel walking distance from the beach, close to public transport, woollies, pubs, clubs and restaurants) - You can walk to practically everything. - Beautiful view of the beach from the common area. - Safe and comfortable atmosphere. - Friendly, inclusive and knowledgeable staff and management - always on hand - The most comfortable beds ever! - Facilities - excellent kitchen and indoor dining area, tea and coffee complementary, laundry room. - Weekly events Monday pancake night, Wednesday pool tournament night,Thursday wine and cheese night - this was a great way to make some friends while solo traveling. - Multiple types of rooms to choose from - Free Wifi - Locker facilities Cons: - None

Left a bag behind reception with staff members. When I came back it was gone, with my ray bans $329, ear phones $379 and nutri bullet blender $200+. Was eventually given the bag back without any of the valuables. When I raised an issue they ignored me. I emailed kristy the manager to no avail. I told them I was reporting the incident to police and staff said police wouldn't come. When I proceeded to call the police member's of staff came with all the stolen items. I emailed kristy about this but she never responded. I was eventually kicked out for drunkenly calling them thieves. Don't go here, they will steal your stuff.

Rooms are filthy, dusty, no hot water for washing, 4 dollars a time for a wash or dry and half the time they don’t work, threw out my groceries don’t know how many times and from I arrived the price per week has risen by nearly 500 dollars and if anything the hostels got worse! The owner had no time or respect for long term stays and kicks out regulars just for the extra bit of cash.. stay at any other hostel in the city for cheaper and a better experience of the city lol

Compared it with the other hotels in the area and Mad Monkey is without any doubt the best one! Close to the beach, good kitchen, nice beach view,...

The whole experience was great. easy to book. Easy to check in. Close to everything. The room & bed were clean & comfy. I slept well & don't normally do that when away from home.

Such a great hostel ! I have been staying in Mad Monkey for two months now - which tells a tale in itself. The hostel is very clean with great facilities. Mad Monkey is such a great place to make friends and the staff are more than accommodating and helpful. It’s like a big home. Never want to leave !!!

Travelled all over Australia and this is by far the best hostel I have stayed at. The layout of the hostel is perfect for making friends and socialising or if you want to relax it is quiet enough to do so. The hostel is kept clean and Kristy listens to all requests for any upgrades or if we need any new things. Tia is absolutely amazing and will do anything she can to help, with no complaints. And the location is unbelievable, couldn’t be closer to the beach if you wanted to be. Thank you Kristy and everyone else for making my time in aus so good

This hostel is amazing amazing place to stay! I have been in the female dorm for roughly 3-4months and have made some of the best friends. It’s clean and welcoming and the perfect location if you are a beach lover! There is a real mixture of travellers and people using the hostel as a base to work and save for more travelling! Couldn’t recommend it enough.

  • 3/5 Niamh M. 5 years ago on Google
Hostel was nice and clean, bright and colourful. My room was lovely for a 12 bed dorm good mattress, nice bedding, curtains for privacy, lamp and plug at each bed and good storage underneath. Gorgeous views. However there was no air con and the fan was controlled by management so we couldn’t use it when we needed and the room got extremely stuffy with 12+ people there at night. Also rooms aren’t consistent my friend was in a room with no plugs, no curtains and no ladders on the bunk beds and she actually had paid more for her room. The location is excellent, a stones throw from the beach and near to everything coogee has to offer. Staff were pleasant but not particularly friendly. They offer free cereal, tea and coffee in the morning which is great but it was never accessible for me in the mornings at 07.30 which was disappointing. The common area is cute with comfy seats, water and a decent tv. Above all this seemed to be a party hostel which wasn’t suited to me. Backpackers would come in in the middle of the night all week with no respect for others sleeping, couples were sharing beds in the rooms so there was often more than 12 in my dorm, and a lot of noise from various activity, nobody seemed to be monitoring the place at night, I understand that the activity in the bedrooms can’t be monitored however the shouting up and down the corridors and in the toilets/kitchen/common areas should have been controlled in my opinion. Also only one washing machine and dryer for the whole hostel which was used by the cleaning staff most of the day.

Stayed at so many hostels throughout Australia and this one is an absolute hidden gem to say the least if you are in or around Sydney you should definitely check this place out

Best hotel I have ever stayed in hands down, beds are comfy and the sheets are the perfect thickness. The receptionists are so lovely, the upstairs communal space is chill, tidy space to cook, eat or sit on the sofa and play PlayStation. Epic views of Coogee and close to transport & food makes it an ideal location. Would recommend to anyone.

This is by far the best hostel in Sydney. I was welcomed by friendly staff and guests! The hostel is very clean and when you arrive you have a bed already made up perfectly by meg (my favourite member of staff)

Don't look at the pictures, this hostel is very small , like VERY SMALL. Common area is 4x4 metres, always crowded and noisy people everywhere. If you need a moment of privacy or relax, it's impossible. Regarding the only toilet on the second floor, it has only 2 bathroom and 2 showers for 100 people I believe. Anyway you can be right there on the beach and be a social animal, but this hostel is good only for night, no more than that

Didn’t have a good stay at this hostel. Food is consistently stolen from the fridge throughout my stay. The kitchen is very small and a constant mess to the point of not being able to use it. Advertised weekly events simply don’t happen, making it harder to meet people in the hostel who often live full time at the hostel working a job making it less social. I had an entire load of washing thrown into the bin by a member of staff because I didn’t come back to the dryer in time. Staff did offer a small amount of compensation but nothing amounting to the amount of clothes thrown away or food lost.

Loved staying in the hostel, I was there for almost 4 months and didn’t want to leave. Tia on reception is amazing, and I’d now call her a friend, she goes above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your stay. Kataya, one of the cleaners is really good at her job and is so friendly. I really enjoyed my time at this hostel and have recommended it to so many people since.

Decent hostel in a great location right on the beach. The only issue I had was the hot room, it was super hard to sleep and you wake up covered in sweat and it's quite uncomfortable to relax in during the day. They need to invest in an AC big time - that would actually make a massive difference.

  • 4/5 Ell D. 1 year ago on Google
Good hostel, decently clean and comfy. Kitchen was a bit small and the stairs were a killer if you had heavy bags 😅 rooms were also a bit too warm- need air con or at least more fans.

Hostel was a great price and had everything I needed for the few days I stayed there. Friendly staff and decent common room area/kitchen. Great location right by the beach.

  • 5/5 Danni S. 1 year ago on Google
I loved staying here! It’s literally across the road from the beach, down the road from really nice bars and clubs, and there’s a huge bus station across the road that allows me to get to anywhere in Sydney. The cleaning staff worked really hard and were super nice

  • 3/5 makeachange 1 year ago on Google
The location was amazing! It truly is a few feet away from the beach. However, the negatives did cancel out the benefits for me. There were roaches in the room, I saw no less than 5 during the two nights I stayed here. The bathrooms are very small and dirty, especially the sinks and toilets. I also woke up with a few strange bites on my body, possibly bed bugs. I did not use the common room or kitchen but they looked clean for the most part. The outlet situation was pretty bad, as the only options to charge devices were two power strips on the floor (no personal outlet). The beds were sort of unstable and the sheets were clean but clearly old and low quality. The 10 person room was very hot at night and I woke up sweating, but the open windows helped a lot! I think I would stay here again but the roach problem would need to be taken care of as soon as possible.

Came mad monkey for a week and tbh never wanted to leave! The location is top notch, right beside the beach! Rooms can be a bit warm but for the price and location it’s very worth it! The staff are some of the moves most welcoming people I’ve met in Australia! (May and Eliza pancakes on Monday pancake aren’t to be missed)! The owner/manager Kristy, is extremely fair, reasonable and a very nice welcoming woman! Couldn’t fault any of them! I’d highly recommend this hostel you’ll have a ball with the guest and staff!

  • 1/5 Tom A. 1 year ago on Google
The place is awful, rooms are extremely dirty and messy, the kitchen is disgusting and the hostel management seemed to care only about what benefits they can use you for, and gave zero cares about the guests, including locking two girls outside their room in the middle of the night. Exactly the opposite from everything good in a hostel. On top of that I actually saw the receptionist giving free nights in exchange to online reviews.

  • 4/5 Maria P. 1 year ago on Google
I love Mad monkey Hostel because it literally feels like a family! Everyone is so friendly and so sociable. You always get to meet people and the receptionist are really friendly. I would defo come back to the hostel, it’s been my favourite place to stay out of all the hostels.

Well what can I say... finally leaving after 15 weeks of being here! What started as a 1 week stay kept going. There are many reasons for this but i am going to mention only a few. 1. The location, right on the beach. Any closer you’d be in the sea! Waking up to the most beautiful sunrises and going for a swim each morning was a dream. Also having the convenience of regular busses on the door step was great! Loads of lovely food places to eat just around the corner and some good pubs too! Everything you need is literally 2 minutes walk away! 2. The cleanliness, this has to be one of, if not the cleanest hostel I’ve stayed in, and I’ve stayed in a few! You offered seen the cleaners as they clean the hostel 3 times a day! Clean bedding on arrival and throughout your stay at no extra cost. 3. The staff, having stayed here a while I’ve gotten to know the staff and I can happily call them friends. They couldn’t of been more helpful if they tried. Always going out of there way to ensure a pleasant stay! The likes of Adam, always happy and cheery, always cracking jokes. Makes the stay a happy one! Just like always being greeted with a warm smile and “how was your day” by Emma and Marian, it’s the little things! The only issues if you could call them issues was in some of the rooms there is no where to lock your stuff away so you have to pay and additional fee for lockers, not a massive things but something maybe to think about. Also if you plan on extending your stay make sure to give some notice as you may have to change rooms, which can be really annoying, but with notice the staff are really accommodating! I’ll be sad to leave, but I just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff and owners for a pleasant “no stress no worries” stay, really enjoyed my it, all the best !

This is probably the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed at after 3 years of traveling. I originally booked 3 nights and only stayed for 1, never received a refund for the other 2 nights I paid for. I explained when I checked out the room was so hot it was unbearable for me and a guy was so drunk he peed all over the floor in the middle of the night the room just stank. I know this wasn’t the hostels fault but I feel this is grounds enough for a refund if I wanted to leave. The girl at reception I spoke to in the morning about the situation was very nice and sympathetic about my situation and even offered me another room but I just wanted to get out.

The lounge and kitchen area was nice, cosy and modern and so was the Funky Monkey Bar/Restaurant (best pancakes for only 4$!). I really liked the staff which was helpful and nice the whole time I stayed at Mad Monkey. But apart from that the bathrooms, corridors and the apartment I stayed in seemed a little run down and were a bit smelly.

The best hostel to stay here in Sidney. Clean, in front of Coogee Beach, near bar, shop and restaurants and with a really nice and friendly staff. Get your breakfast at the third floor with the ocean view, is the best way to start your day.

  • 2/5 Jannis T. 4 years ago on Google
Nice located but the beds have no stairs so you have to climb up if you sleep on the second floor, the matres are very old and uncomfortable to sleep on, rooms in general are abonded, you could end up sleeping with a weird old person in your room and the kitchen is ridiculously small. I enjoyed my stay in this hostel to a certain extent but there is to nuch ro complain about.

Friendly staff with an overall family feeling, events most nights with chances to win trips to further your Australian experience, hands down the best hostel out there. I stayed for like 14 days in Mad Monkey Coogee Beach. Unless the kitchen which was a little bit small, everything else was fantastic. The location is just insanely close to the beach and the receptionists and the manager were so helpful and nice. They allowed me to have My Skype Interview on the restaurant which meant a lot to me. The trash bin was a little bit small for a 10-bed dorm. All in all, everything was more than perfect! I will come back again. Thank Maayan, Sofia and the french receptionists.

One of, if not THE favourite hostel of my travels by far. The staff was attentive and welcoming from the very start of my stay. I actually stayed longer than planned due to having such a great time at the hostel due to its occupants and staff. I found everything ticked the boxes for me from the facilities and location, to its guests. As someone travelling Australia and after having multiple hostel experiences, These guys know how to do it ! ! I would recommend Mad Monkey Coogee to anyone who finds themselves on the eastern beaches! I have made friends and memories for life thanks to this place. Thanks again ! :-)

Great hostel! Friendly, fun, clean and sociable. Less than a minute to the beach with lush views. Felt safe and secure. Basic but has everything you need and more, free coffee/tea in the kitchen too was a plus! We’ll definitely stay here again if back in Coogee! :)

A great hostel! Vibes are great and can't ask for a better location. The girl who helped me out (I think her name was Milly??) was so nice and made me feel right at home. She smelt a bit like Zambreros but I didn't mind :) The Meg girl was also v nice

The staff especially Tia are always so welcoming and friendly. I stayed here last year and left for my travels and came back and it feels just like home. Cleanliness is always up to a high standard and the free coffee and sugar is super handy. All the staff, stevie, maddie etc keep the kitchen nice and tidy and the view is lovely.
