I do not recommend this hostel. - Rooms look like prison cells, very small and very no decorated as they shown on website - No heater, so the room was frozen. But good blanket warmed you all night. - They doesn't have a storage room to leave your luggage on the day you check in or out. Which is not very practical when you have to spend your day out in a big city. They do have lockers tho, but you have to pay for it and it's not many of them so if you're lucky you'll get one.

Maze prisons is not a bad place to stay if you like damp rooms, smaller than a large wardrobe, with thin bedsheets, the thinnest pillows known to man, with no Aircon, or heating, with single glazed windows on a busy street, with piss in bottles in open bins outside your room, if you like to pay $4 to get a replacement towel, even if you're staying there for a month and a half like one kid (well you can wash it for a cost of $8 as the receptionist pointed out to me), also not bad if you actually want to do washing with 8 washing machines and only 3 dryers available. There are possibly 200 rooms, up to 600 guests with about 12 toilets. I don't have huge standards, and I expected it to be bad but it's possibly the worst hotel I've stayed in on my travels. It's cheap for Sydney, but is the third most expensive hotel I've paid for in 7 months. The only positives are that there's hot water in the showers immediately, the location is close to Central station, the toilets aren't actually kept in bad conditions for a bunch of young guys, just the odd pair of underpants, toothbrush or towel left in the showers. To quote my mate - "I've been in makeshift army barracks that look better than this place"

Very modern, clean bathrooms. Room very basic, but clean. Very quiet apart from aircon going 24/7. Brilliant kitchen area, very well equipped. Excellent security, felt very safe. Way too many stairs and no lift, although lovely young guy on front counter carried my 2 suitcases up the stairs for me. I definitely need to travel lighter.

Perfect place to stay for travelers in Sydney. You can stay there for good money. Everything is really clean and comfortable. What make the maze even more special is the opportunity to find new friends. Because of its size and daily Events!! it’s perfect to connect with people and find friends. I left the maze finding many friends from different places.

This place was the most dirty hostel I've ever stayed in. The doona cover looked like it hadn't been washed in years, we didn't want to touch the floors or walls. The showers weren't cleaned the whole time we were there and were covered in hair; the sanitary bins were overflowing and a used pad was lying on one of the toilet floors for days. I've never felt so dirty in my life.

First time staying in a backpackers and was pleasantly surprised! Booked a night here for City2Surf as it's a great location near the start of the race and right in the heart of the city. Staff were helpful and friendly and let me drop off my bag earlier. Rooms were tiny (as expected) but clean and comfortable mattress. Shared dining area was lively and full, with a tv and a shared kitchen. Shared bathrooms were modern and clean. Only lost a star because it was quite difficult to sleep as the city was very noisy with cars going past and there was little to no sound reduction in the room, so bring earplugs!

Good location, rooms are okay and it has a big kitchen / decent facilities for a hostel. I wouldn’t stay here unless you’re okay with getting only a couple of hours sleep per night. Unfortunately the walls are not very soundproof so you hear every footstep and person coming in late, and the road out front is awful, so many speeding cars, heavy trucks and people who are drunk screaming and shouting on the street that kept me awake most the night. Staff are nice and the rooms are basic, but they’re what you pay for. I did however see two cockroaches in the hallway during the night so just be aware, it’s an old building with lots of entryways so I wasn’t too shocked. There is no heating or a/c.

My sister and I really appreciated the service of Fay (the Thai guy). He was professional, smiling, cool and had such a positive energy at the same time. Keep up doing the good work mate! Thank to you I would definitely recommend Maze backpacker. Moreover, the location was perfect. PS: Thank you so much to the cleaning team for your efforts even though it's not easy for you guys everyday!

Fair prices, as clean as it gets for a Hostel, friendly staff, large cooking area, big fridges, laundry area and work areas with desks. The location is really good, very easy to reach anywhere in the city center. The only thing that could be improved would be better wifi reception in the rooms, i couldn‘t call people in my room and the common area was very noisy.

Everything is very clean and the rooms are great. The staff are really helpful and polite too. The events are good fun and are a great way to meet new people. The location is amazing too as you have World Square and tons of Asian restaurants nearby aswell.

I travel to Sydney regularly and always stay at the Maze. The rooms and share bathrooms are clean and comfortable, being excellent for budget accommodation. The location is within walking distance of Central Station, so getting anyway in Sydney is easy. Foremost, the staff are the greatest. They care for the safety and comfort of all the guests. The atmosphere is always super warm - great guests from all over the world who usually have a smile or even time to chat in the open areas. The 'no noise' rule late at night, means I always sleep comfortably. The Maze is more than a business - it's an institution where I now always feel at home.

This was the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at! It feels like home, the hostel is surrounded by incredibly people and staff who support all of their guests. It is a fun and welcoming place to stay! I would definitely recommend to all backpackers and more to stay here if they are looking for a friendly fun place to stay. They have daily events that include everyone and all variety of guests of all ages. The rooms are a great place to meet loads of people and create great relationships with people that lasts a lifetime

Stayed in a four-bed all female room, it was spacious with lockers and a desk with a chair. Charging points were placed a bit inconvenient, only on one wall, not in reach of the beds except for if you have a long cable. There were only 2 charging points. Bed was comfortable and room was clean, tidy and also cleaned by staff everyday. Bathrooms were clean most of the time. Staff was very friendly and helpful, luggage can be stored in a luggage room pre check in and on the day of check out. The main building, rooms and luggage room can only be accessed with a key card which is given to you, which makes it feel very safe. There's always staff present at the reception. Location is very, very good with a mall, including cafes, coles etc. right up the street. Can be a bit noisy but I personally sleep with headphones on anyway so it didn't bother me in the end.

Great hostel, very clean and tidy. Also lovely people working there. Mikele and Diego great guys in the reception and also Henry the manager, always trying to help and fix any problem. Would love to stay again there if I am back in Sydney. Thanks Maze!!

We had a really great stay at this hostel. Friendly staff, good equipped rooms and kitchen, lots of other young people. They had a whole program with socializing events such as movie nights, hikes etc. 100% recommendable! Would stay again!

Best experience ever. Staff is incredible and guests are so kind and inviting. Facilities are kept clean and the events are so well organised. Everyone in this space is so welcoming I can’t wait to come back.

The best hostel for backpackers I’ve been in Australia so far. The big advantage is a specious kitchen (open long from 5am to 11pm), plenty of fridges and spaces to eat (one even outdoor). All areas are clean and tidy, including bathrooms. The staff is really nice as well. Great location, close to the city, next to building there’s also Coles. The only thing which could be better is a temperature, we stayed there during winter and the room was pretty cold (but it’s normal that they don’t use heaters). Overall, I definitely recommend!

The cleanest hostel I have ever been. Bedroom is nice, bathroom is very clean. Nice and helpful staffs. I’ve met Fayfay she is Thai staff and always willing to help and Michele from Argentina he is very friendly and Ali is slways working very hard to take care of all the guests. Also they have events almost everyday sometimes movies night, free food and the location is in the heart of Sydney. You wont regret staying here.

Like the name, this place is really large with a lot of rooms. My experience is good while i stay in here, friendly and helpful staff, clean bed room, kitchen and shower room. unfortunately this place doesn't have elevator that we can use to bring our luggages to first or second floor or to the luggage room.

Had a cool three days at maze backpackers, the staff were helpful and always on call 24/7, communication in advance was amazing and they helped us change our booking. The facilities are pretty cool and they seem to successfully manage a large number of guests without too much compromise.. Showers were always hot and clean, loos were generally pretty good.. The venue is located right above the bar so if you're there Friday and Saturday the bass vibrates till late and the rooms are pretty basic. It felt really safe at all times and the 24hr access is complimented by night security. The location is convenient for darling harbour, Hyde park, travel links and Chinatown... If you want cheap basic and convenient, this is a great hostel. :)

The name is apt as there is a maze of corridors. There are lots of rules here which I suppose are necessary as it's a large place. The kitchen is well equipped but does get very busy as do the communal areas. Our private twin room was very basic, to say the least. The WiFi was good in the communal areas but was very poor in our room. The staff are friendly and enthusiastic, but overall, this place was a bit shabby around the edges.

This hostel has been my home since I arrived in Australia! Lovely people, many activities to join, heartwarming, good vibes always! I also had the opportunity to be part of the staff when I needed a job; the receptionists are absolutely the best of the people, always available to help you with everything. Thank you so much to the managers Ashley and Holy, and thank you Diego and Fay fay for your wonderful vibes. If you ever have any complaints, they will always listen and assist you. The only thing is that the common areas and kitchen close at 11 pm. The good thing is that if you work the next day, the hostel is always quiet at night, but the downside is that you can't stay in the common areas after that time. I also want to suggest that people make reservations directly on the official website of Maze because it's cheaper. Alternatively, you can come directly and make a reservation at the reception; they will always do everything to find you a space. After all, thank you so much for this wonderful two-month experience staying here. The people I met here have become like my family, and I will always treasure every moment I spent here ☺️❤️

The location and service of the hostel is great. Friendly and welcoming service at the front desk. You can find everything needed at the place and the room is quite clean. The only downside is the room is a bit noisy at night. But considering its great location at CBD and price. I would recommend it and visit again.

Unfriendly service, staff were trying their best but management were rushing them and even pushed staff to stop checking us in halfway to attend to another task. Room was okay but absolutely not worth the price. Tone deaf Halloween decorations - box of plastic body parts on the desk labelled "missing backpacker"... Across the room actual missing persons posters of lost loved ones on the wall. Heaps spooky, guys.

Location is awesome, very central and easy to get wherever you want. Toilets and showers are clean most of the time. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Beds are terrible we were scared it will collapse, rooms are the smallest I’ve ever seen. If you get a room on the street side be prepared to get close to no sleep at all. I’ve traveled a fair bit and that was by far the worst hostel (rooms, beds) I’ve stayed at. Better if they would close the hostel and open up a homeless shelter.

This hostel has been the absolute best. The location is perfect, and the staff were incredible. Through the amazing events that they offer, I made friends and memories that I'll cherish forever. The only downside about this hostel is that the rooms could use an upgrade. But at the end of the day, it is a hostel.

I’d highly recommend staying elsewhere. There is one plug socket in the room, no lamps/bedside lighting, no AC and the added bonus of cockroaches. The kitchen is laid out so bizarrely you felt like you have walked a marathon by the time you’ve worked it out. The rooms are noisy and everything needs a lot of love and re-working. The shared bathroom is okay but needs some attention. But the highlight of my stay was leaving which was not great. A good location, but many other options available, avoid Maze!

There’s nothing remarkable about this place. The building is very old, broken walls, windows and carpets. It’s so big that’s it even difficult to find the bathroom. The rooms are extremely hot and the fan, located way up in the ceiling, is not effective. At night, as it’s very noisy outside, it’s impossible to sleep as you can hear the cars, people talking outside and the music from the bars nearby which made my bed shake.

Great hostel, would definitely recommend. The single rooms had plenty of room. Sheets and towels (1 per person) are complimentary. The rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and building were clean. The kitchen has everything you need utensils wise, but can get busy at peak hours. Activities and free food are held most nights, helping you meet others.

My wife and I stayed at this backpacker's about 20 years ago and there were holes punched in the wall, the door did not lock properly and the mattress had rust stains on it, and one of the windows were broken

Very overpriced for a run down hostel. The smell is horrendous, there is no lift only stairs, it’s so noisy so you can’t sleep, the rooms are tiny you can’t even open your suitcase, it’s on a noisy busy street but it’s close to everything, when we booked even the member of staff told us to look around first which didn’t give me much confidence. The staff are friendly tho but next time I would stay at YHA down the road, cheaper, cleaner, bigger and much more welcoming.

Some staff are friendly, some are not. Good central location and great price. Good activities and free food. However, the place looks and smells old. Very noisy. Female toilet and shower rooms (1st floor) quite dirty. Kitchen is dirty too. Movie room also smells bad. Overall, it's an ok experience for me.

Great place to stay. The rooms are tiny but the staff is really good and understanding. The staff made it worth it. Tiny rooms gave us a very suffocating feeling, and it was quite hot - we asked the staff to let us check out other rooms - they graciously accepted. On not finding a room with any better situation, we were a bit disappointed. But the staff came to our room and offered an extra fan. That was really sweet and made our stay much more comfortable. The rooms are still really small tho :P Good kitchen, play and movie area

Highly recommended! Lot of space, lot of things going on, parties, free meals and cinema :) and most important it is clean! Good quality towels and bedding. Only WiFi is extra pay ☹️

  • 5/5 Guilherme B. 2 years ago on Google
The rooms are fine, except the ones with a window overlooking Pitt St. The noise and the amount of light that enters through the windows is a little unpleasant at night. Recently a friend and I stayed at Maze and we had some setbacks, such as we asked for help from Diego, one of the Maze team members and he was super proactive and sweet in solving and helping us solve our issues. I would like to congratulate the space for the service provided to its employee, people from Brazil who are interested in staying, any questions, look for this guy grade 10!

Extremely extremely rude and frustrating staff. With WIFI not working in 21 century. I deliberately booked in a double room with double bed instead of twin room with bunk bed via booking.com . But this lady decided to decide for us , and stuck us with twin room. On the occasion of requesting her to upgrade to a double room , she very condescendingly replies “this is not a hotel, it is bagpackers”.If only the problems ended here, the lady who cleans up the common area, was intruding to a level of being unbearable. She used to constantly take rounds of the table whenever I was having my lunch or dinner and stare at my food and me where I decided not to even have my single meal at this “Maze Bagpackers” . Along with while I used to be having my meal, she used to come with a broom and start sweeping having zero respect for my 10 minutes of meal. I have stayed in numerous bagpackers, and by far it was the WORST, even after paying for entire 7 days I got out of the place within 4 days

Apart from the shabby rooms, the public bathroom is one of the few clean places I've seen. This surprised me and I enjoyed my time in the shower. The service staff always have a smile on their faces, which makes the whole day a good mood👍 In addition, the location of the hotel is also very good, there are many well-known restaurants next to it, and the bus station is also nearby.

Stayed for a few nights with my husband in a double room. A great surprise was how quiet the hostel was. Staff was friendly and let us store our lugwbefore and after our stay. The room was OK, but could be better. Pillows were OK, but a bit small for me. Mattress was ok/bad. The biggest problem were the windows. Thin glass and with some open holes at the top, all the cold and noise from outside were entering the room. We stayed over the weekend, so the Two NIGHT CLUBS in front of the room were super loud until 2am or who knows what time was that. It was impossible to sleep. I could hear the lights opening and closing for pedestrians. It was NOT a good night. Also, the bathroom was about 100 steps from the room. Literally the opposite side of the hostel, which is huge. There was only one bathroom open (there are two per floor) and only 2 showers and 3 toilets. All the times that I used the bathroom it was not clean. Lots of hair everywhere, everything always wet. I even saw someone drying her hair in the hand dryer. Toilet seats are all cracked - please consider that this makes it impossible for anyone to really clean that seat. Bacteria and fungus will be present in all cracks and it doesn't matter how long you clean it, it won't be clean. Please consider changing it immediately. Also, I could see ppl from the shower in the toilet, and vice versa. Shower was amazing, super hot! But it gets cold randomly. I didn't use the kitchen. Unfortunately, since I didn't feel that the bathroom was clean and couldn't sleep well because of the noise, I wouldn't stay here again. But if you mind those things, this backpack is located just between a train and light rail station.

I’ve stayed in backpackers before and when I say this is THE BEST I mean it! Everything about this place was perfect. We had Ashleigh look after us and she made sure we were catered to for our whole stay. 10/10 recommend, well done Haze Backpackers

Pros: - convenient location - plenty of rooms - much common space and amenities - the 4-people dorm was rather big Cons: - the bathrooms could be cleaner and in a better condition - only 2 power plugs in a dorm for 4 people - I wanted to stay there for an additional night and was assigned another room. When entering it, I noticed a cockroach and saw also another one in the stairs. I went back to the reception and said that I would go to another place (which I did), but the staff answered that it's normal ("it's Australia") and didn't refund me even though I had been in the room for less than one minute and didn't touch anything.

The location is good, i like how the communal kitchen is big and everyone is very responsible in washing up their utensils. Toilets are clean as well, no funny carpet smells as compared to other hostels that my friends were staying at. The downside is that some walls of your rooms might be thin as its a fake wall, so if your neighbors are a group of girls, good luck. Theres no heater in the room and some of the windows room can’t close fully, but i’m used to the weather so it wasn’t that bad for me. Conclusion, i would stay again if the price remains the same. Note: I booked 2 private twin rooms.

We got a friendly welcome in the Maze. It looked like a normal backpacker hostel with bunk beds, laundry, a large kitchen and several bathrooms with showers. They cleaned it up every day. We didn’t have wifi. But they told us, that they will supply it soon. The hostel is good located. There are a lot of pubs, restaurants, supermarkets and train/ bus stations nearby.

Stayed for a Week. The smell In the Room was a bit weird and at night is was quite cold and the blankets where a bit dirty but you had a sheet to cover yourself. The toilets were quite good and regularly cleaned. The kitchen is big and mostly clean but the interior is very old and feels a bit depressing. But after all everybody was friendly and you can get a private room for two for just 70$ or 48€ a night.

Good location. Me and my girlfriend stayed here for three nights and the room was quite hot. The hostel can seem quite old and lots of things are worn-out. The kitchen is quite big and there are almost always enough room for you to cook your food. During the usual dinner hours (17-20) the hostel adds an extra employee to clean the kitchen - something that a lot of hostels should learn from! The hallways of the hostel made it obvious why they named it 'Maze'. Also if you get back to the hostel in the evening, the staff will be asking if they can see your key. It's nice that they have this safety measure. As what I can read from reviews, it sounds like they have renovated the rooms since I was here. The rooms were unbearably hot when we were there, but it might not be so bad now.

I recommend the maze! very good hostel. the staff is very welcoming, present to help you. we feel safe with the reception open 24/24 and the security guard who is here all night. it's very friendly, there is a living room, TV room, large kitchen + organized activities if you are alone you can easily meet people the only worries are that there is not enough laundry and you have to wait your turn everytime
