Marseille Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille or Cathédrale de la Major) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in Marseille. It has been a basilica minor since 1896. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille (formerly the Diocese of Marseille until its elevation in 1948). Part of the earlier, much smaller cathedral still remains, alongside the new cathedral. It was built in the 12th century in a simple romanesque style. Two bays of the nave were demolished in the 1850s, when the new cathedral was built. What remains is the choir and one bay of the nave. It is commonly referred to as the "Vieille Major". The composer Charles Desmazures was organist at the old cathedral. The present cathedral, the "Nouvelle Major", was built on an enormous scale in the Byzantine and Roman Revival styles. The foundation stone was laid by Emperor Napoleon III in 1852 and the first service was held in 1893. It was completed in 1896, given the title of minor basilica, and consecrated in 1897. It was built on the site used for the cathedrals of Marseille since the fifth century, principally by the architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-1874). It is 142 meters (469 ft) long, and the main cupola is 70 meters (231 ft) high. With a capacity of 3,000 seats, it is one of the largest cathedrals in France. It is a listed monument since 1906. #vivalafrance

The Cathedral La Major is a truly impressive and must-see landmark in Marseille. Its location and architecture are truly captivating. The cathedral's exterior is particularly stunning, with its grand and majestic presence. As a Roman Catholic cathedral, it holds significant historical and cultural importance. The cathedral's construction was completed in 1896, and its architectural style is a blend of Romanesque and Byzantine influences. The intricate details and ornate design make it a remarkable sight to behold. The interior is equally magnificent, with high ceilings, beautiful stained glass windows, and intricate sculptures. Visiting the Cathedral La Major is a truly memorable experience. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, or simply appreciating stunning landmarks, this cathedral is a must-see. It is a testament to the rich heritage and cultural significance of Marseille.

I didn't even know that cathedrals were still being built at the end of the 19th century. This is probably one of the youngest of its kind. A very impressive building in a place that attracts everyone's attention.

In the morning we walked to the cathedral, which reminded us of the cathedral in Siena in Tuscany that had a similar black and white design. I think the best part of walking to and from there was winding through the streets to see the various graffiti art and is plentiful in Marseilles. Just take a walk down seemingly any lane and you’ll run into some graffiti, sometimes big murals, that are extremely well done.

A beautiful cathedral inside and out. It cuts an imposing sight on the edge of the sea, visible to all who enter Marseille Port from many miles away. It is decorated in a beautiful marble style inside and out, and sits in a lovely square, giving it lots of room to stand out in its surroundings. Inside it is so peaceful. The marble pillars and mosaic floors really are stunning. This really is a beautiful cathedral.

A beautiful cathedral. You can enter without having to buy a ticket and walk around freely, admiring the incredible architecture of the cathedral. There is a plaza around the cathedral which offers views of the port and is great for watching the sunset!

Gorgeous cathedral, especially on the outside, now that most renovations are done. Also worth a stroll inside, with a few interesting scenes, and some focus and memorabilia around Johnny Halliday. Some of the glass stained windows and the mosaics are really quite spectacular!

Cathédrale de la Major was the oldest church in France with a Roman/Oriental architectural style, and it took 40 years to build! With such a rich history, it was a must visit while in Marseille.

A Byzantine style cathedral built between 1852 and 1893. Visually stunning both inside & out, Cathédrale La Major is situated on an esplanade by the New Port. The mosaic floor is especially stunning; it was all laid by hand and took nine months of painstaking work.

This is the main Catholic Cathedral for Marseille, and it is very unique Romano-Byzentine style in Europe! The floor was full of mosaic, and columns were made of different stones in multi-color formation. It was originally built to protect the sea faring people and to welcome visiting ships and seamen. The facade in the evening was most beautiful and warmest as it was facing the setting sun 🌅 You have the best spot to watch the sunset over Mediterranean Sea! Cheers!

Especially now that it’s renovated, the Cathedrale La Major is a gorgeous Byzantine church that is dazzling. We enjoyed the sunset here, as you can see in the photos. It’s gorgeous on the outside and has opulent interiors as well. It’s a big treat to see and you shouldn’t miss it.

Impressive building - Roman Catholic cathedrale, completed in 1896. Beautiful, calm interior that you can enter and enjoy for free. Just pity, that besides one sign you cannot find any information in English for foreign tourists there.

Obviously a beautiful cathedral. It is very spacious and has a lot of interesting small things around it. I recommend going there on a sunny day as it’s really nice inside. It’s also free and when I was there, there was a subtle melody playing which added to the atmosphere.

Visited for the day on a Celebrity cruise. This was actually where the free bus from the cruise terminal had dropped us off. We didn't know what the building was till we started exploring this Amazingly beautiful church. I know a lot of people go to the big "Notre Dame" up the hill but I really hope they stop at this one too. So much to see, so many details. Keep walking to the right or left of the alter there are more chapels and tombs to see twords the back. It felt like the never ending exploration. Was free to walk in. Highly recommend. It so beautiful.

I love history and seeing old churches. This church is amazing. The sheer size and magnitude of this church is incredible. The fact that it took over 40 years to build and was built over the site of 2-3 previous churches is also remarkable. A must see! FYI, we preferred this church to the Notre Dame of Marseille.

An astonishing Roman catholic church. The architecture of interior and exterior is way different than the other cathedrals I have seen across the western Europe. It seemed to me a bit more like eastern churches or even like having touches of middle eastern islamic architecture with all the strips and that. You will be amazed by the tiniest details inside and the workmanship required to get them done. All in all, it is a unique and must-see place to visit in Marseille.

Beautiful cathedral in a lovely location on the water. The building is currently undergoing rectification works with scaffolding around the building perimeter which is preventing access to certain areas. You are however still able to enter the church to worship. It wasn’t very crowded when we went but this could be due to the scaffolds on display. Views out to sea are gorgeous on a sunny day.

Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille is an imposing building, unique in France, which evokes the Orient in its Romanesque-Byzantine style. It was built between 1852 and 1893. Its architecture is grandiose and it has a marble interior decoration. It is a few steps away from the port and after visiting it you can walk along the coast.

Very beautiful, stunning cathedral and the square in front of the sea. It is quite big and has a pleasent atmosphere inside. Unfortunately they are doing some works at the moment in the entrance, so I could not admire it entirely.

Nice place to visit. Very good location, too. The only problem is that, besides being under public works at the moment, it's not acceptable that this cathedral does not yet have a simple ramp for being accessible for people with reduced mobility.

  • 5/5 Cam G. 4 years ago on Google
Truly magnificent. Words and pictures can not do it justice. Go and visit and enjoy the colours of the place and the magnificent tiled floors. Pity the from is undergoing restoration atm (Aug2019) and is covered in scaffolding.
