We came here on Friday night, and the place was buzzing with people and the live band! We ordered the Lemon Schnitzel - freshly crumbed matters marinated and freshly crumbed chicken breast, chips, slaw, Bavarian mayo. It was out of this world!!! The best in the city. Great selection of Bavarian beer. Make sure you book a table, as it gets packed very quickly. Super friendly service, and quick.

German restaurant in the heart of chinatown who can believe. Believe me you have to try, give them a chance. This tavern look pretty good, they bring the German vibe to Australia with their foods, drinks and decor. Generally the staff was nice and friendly. The food was good and the price make sense except for the pork knuckle 58 dollars, it’s a bit excessive for what you get. Their sauerkraut is a must, approved, very good, mashed potato I’m not sure about, very average. The beer was awesome, I will definitely comeback for their sausage platter.

Fun atmosphere with live music at dinner time, what a fantastic Bavarian treat on the edge of Chinatown. Friendly, helpful service and the food didn't disappoint. Can't wait to come back to try some pork

I have been coming to Hofbrauhaus for over a decade, and the quality has consistently remained high. The authenticity of cuisine and hospitality is always a highlight. I tried their Feast Platter for the first time last week, and it was excellent. The crispiness of the pork knuckle crackling was utterly impressive. The knuckle was tender and piping hot. However, I did feel it needed a better sauce to enhance the flavour, as the pork jus was bland and didn't add anything; I avoided it entirely. The pork belly was rather bland too, only redeemed by the bed of red cabbage underneath it. The lemon schnitzel and sausages were excellent, as usual – I particularly enjoyed the cheese kransky and ham steak. The accompaniments and sides were delicious too. All in all, a very grand, filling meal. Definitely come hungry for it!

First time and for sure not the last one. Staff was very lovely. Food delicious. We order the feast platter. It says for 2-3 people but we were 5 and we almost couldn't finish it. So much food! There was live music and that made the whole experience more delightful. Very recommended. Also, a good place to celebrate birthdays and other sort of big gatherings.

If you’re looking for traditional German food and beer, this is the perfect place to come! We dined on a Friday evening and were able to enjoy live music while enjoying our beer and extremely flavorsome food! Great that they offer a free 300ml beer if you have tickets for the theatre later that night too. Will be returning again!

We did the beer tasting experience today. Incredible beer and awesome food paired with it. Host was knowledgeable and personable. Knew the history of beer and could compare with spirits/wine. Had the best afternoon. Can’t wait to come back!

Love this German restaurant in Melbourne's Chinatown area. Friendly service with an authentic local tavern feel (well without the cigarette smoke!). Menu is varied and the serves are super generous. The fried mushroom starter is absolutely amazing! Def recommend this. For mains my mate had the chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce. It was huge!!! Come hungy, don't eat lunch! This is a marathon meal :) The chicken was tender, only thing I would consider is more sauce please!! I opted for the sausages. OMG so good. Perfectly whipped mashed potato's as well as tangy sauerkraut. Really enjoyed this meal. Well worth the trip to town for such a great experience. Highly recommended.

Now the original flavours of a small state of Bavaria in Germany is hard to find anywhere else in Australia. But friends, @hofbrauhaus_melbourne is where you are guaranteed to find the authentic flavours, vibe, people, charm, decor, drinks and everything of Bavaria in this quaint little tavern style restaurant in an alley in Chinatown, Melbourne, Australia. We had a gala feast at this fantastic German restaurant, with all the traditional Bavarian and German cuisine. Weiner schnitzel, served with cranberry sauce, freshly crumbed veal, potato salad and slaw, so crispy, perfectly tender from inside and with that cranberry sauce, it tasted even more yum. Biergarten Fisch, served with bretzel crusted cod with creamed Bavarian cabbage and fennel, buttered potatoes, lemon cream, such a divine main course, loved the bed of creamy veggies the code was served on more, has a very satisfying and mouth-melting flavour to it, highly recommend! Biergarten Ente, served with pan roasted duck breast, duck leg croquette, fondant potato, roast beetroot and sour cherry sauce. The combination of all the flavours were so sensational in this dish, I felt very festive the moment I took a bite of this dish. The duck breast was very juicy and was cooked to perfection, the croquette of duck leg was the show stopper of this elegant and beautiful main dish. Definitely a must try. We had a flatbread topped with bacon, cheese, rocket and onion with their creamy onion and leek soup of the day. This was a perfect winter gastronomic combo, so heart warming the soup was and the flatbread was absolutely delicious. Must try. And of course, the bretzels were perfect like always. We also had a cocktail called Angela Merkel, which was very refreshing in taste, I would strongly recommend this, even though the German lagers are hard to resist here. The prices are impossibly very reasonable and standard considering the generous portion size of their mains. The service is incredibly awesome, led by a team of friendly, cheerful and helpful team of staff. So guys why not checkout this lovely tavern @hofbrauhaus_melbourne this weekend with your friends/family.

Special lunch menu. About $20 for a choice of 5 or 6 dishes. Add a small bier for $6. Very quiet but told there is a band on Friday Saturday and Sunday starting around 6:30 pm. The place looked huge so there would be a better atmosphere.

First time I came I loved the Swiss schnitzel. The way it was made was great so I came the next day. I tried the pretzel schnitzel. It was ok but wasn't a favourite. I also asked if I could sample the kransky. The waiter was hospitable and allowed me to have a sample. It tasted great and is something I wanted to try on my next visit. I also ordered the black forest dessert. It was old and shrunken and tasted like the fridge. I sent it back. I was told they tasted it and it wasn't the case. They were going to charge for it nevertheless and were truly not honest about the matter. I have since visited again and was put off by the female waitress. We just walked out and won't be back again.

We tried the restaurant when they hosted Oktoberfest. We ordered the Feast Platter to try out the great set of German dishes: Pork knuckle, sausages, pork belly, Schnitzel, red cabbage, mash potato, Sauerkraut. They were delicious, juicy and went well with each other. They have a great selection of beer types but we didn't have the chance to try as many as possible but we will try more next time. The staff is great. We love the atmosphere there for beer lovers.

I would agree with those who say this a great place to come for a fun gathering. Service is super friendly, the atmosphere is charming, and does have a German feel to it, and the beers are great, especially the HB fest lager. The soft pretzel sundae was really nice. The schnitzel was alright, not great by Melbourne standards. The belly pork had nice crackling but the meat was dry. I was offered more gravy which I gratefully accepted, not knowing that they charged me $8 for that small (60ml?) cup of extra gravy! 300ml of the same beer used in the gravy only cost $10.50. An unfortunate end to an otherwise very good overall experience.

A little story here. We knew about this place for a while but never made an attempt to drive all the way to city. However in the beginning of December we went, and we were mindblown by the beer and food here. The beer was so unbelievable that we all had to drink enough to belive it. Since then, i haven't stopped talking about this place and we make frequent trips to the city just to be here. To top off everything the staff is absolutely lovely and they carry the vibe of this legendary bar within themselves. P.S. We have dreams about the beers from this bar. Definitely must go if you are in Melbourne.

Absolutely brilliant. Service was impeccable, especially around making sure everything was accessible for one of our party in a wheelchair, food was great including vegie and vegan options, the pretzels were divine, and the band was so much fun! Plus they put a sprinkler on the dessert for the birthday girl without us even asking! We will be back and we've been raving to everyone we know.

You can’t go wrong here! As good as I’ve had in Munich Germany. Warm salty pretzels with the perfect butter match. Best Bratwurst and Beer as cold as it can be. This place gets busy but is worth it !

What an amazing experience we had last night. Everyone was so lovely and the servers were fantastic. Fast service and amazing food. Haven’t been able to have authentic German food like this since my oma passed away as my cooking is not that good haha to be able to have this experience last night was special. And because it was my birthday they gave us complimentary schnapps too. Perfect night can’t wait to come back again one day

Came here for a volunteer group Christmas lunch. Crowded and noisy but still friendly and reasonable service. Generous serves of hearty German food in a fun setting. Really enjoyed the eating experience here. Located down a lane way but worth finding!

I came here with a couple of mates last night and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food and beverages were phenomenal 😋 and I was even given containers to pack the leftovers in. The service staff provided great service. They were helpful, accommodating and friendly overall. I'd just like to make one suggestion, which is to lighten up the place abit more as it felt a little dark. But as I said, the overall experience was great and I highly recommend coming to this place if you're interested in a night out in the city and wanting to feast on German Cuisine. I know for a fact that my mates and I will definitely be back.

Hofbrauhaus has some pretty amazing food and drinks! The atmosphere was really nice and casual. They had a great range of drinks and also food! The food servings here were gigantic! My absolutely favourite was the pork belly. It was so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a delicious jus sauce and tangy red cabbage.

Let's start with the best - live band that will not disappoint you and the decor and staff uniform will transform you to Germany. One of the best venues in Melbourne to go with friends or family and you are assured top notch service. Manager and team were absolutely friendly, helpful and prompt. The food was delicious but needs a little more to make it value for money... Overall a wonderful experience! Would go again.

Wow! What an authentic German experience! Live accordian German music, authentic waitress staff in tradtional dress, meaty food, delicious beers! What more could you want? I felt like I was in Germany! Oh and the beer!!! You must have a selection of the different beers! Highly recommend the tasting meat selection to share for 2-4 people. Also feel free to dance to the music! Thank you!!

I've been there multiple times with different groups. It never fails to entertain everyone. RADLER is a drink recommended by Munich locals, especially favoured by girls. Same interior as the one in Munich. Live music is only available for dinner. But lunch sessions are quieter and perhpas more suitable for family with young children.

Food was great! Flavours and portions just right. Music also spot on. They also have tea and coffee if you'd like some after your meal. They do have a ramp they can bring out for wheelchair users. Not too sure if they have an accessible toilet. We went on a rainy day, and the ramp did get too slippery for an electric wheelchair, but staff were happy to help us push it up the ramp. We ended up getting out of the chair and pushing just the wheelchair down the ramp on our way out, just to be safe. Was very happy with the friendly and helpful staff.

Took a team of coworkers here for a birthday and social event and everything was absolutely outstanding! The food was out of this world and we were able to take the leftovers home so there was no waste. The leftovers were just as amazing the next day. We had the hungry Bavarian package and even with some dietary restrictions it all went smoothly The staff were all so kind and helpful and the event was a huge success! I can not rate this place highly enough

Great German restaurant that's been around Melbourne for a few years. Good selection of different German dishes, the two we tried are both pretty good. Service is prompt and friendly. Live music is great as well. Good selection of beers ? There are two entrances, the one closer to Bourke Street side is the restaurant section.

Feels like a German beer hall, right here in Melbourne. Generous portion sizes. A BIG pork knuckle, good for sharing. And a nice veal schnitzel. The beer was great. Had a passionfruit tasting one- very fruity and refreshing!

Nice vibrant environment. Nice beers and great experience for the live music. Food is well over priced however. I would expect fine dining for the dish I bought which was the oven roasted pork belly. Was nice but not worth the cost.

I couldn't have asked for a better Valentines day dinner! The staff handed out free cocktails and a rose to set the mood! This meal was perfect in every way, the pork belly melted beautifully in my mouth and the pork knuckles fell off the bone when being sliced. The menu says this serves 2-3 people but could easily serve 4-5.

My sons love the food and portion here. We ordered a huge platter that is good for 3 German. In it there are a huge pork trotter, at the sides are the chicken schnitzel, on the other side is the sausages, vegetables, mash potatoes. Beers come in a huge solid mug. At the door one will be greeted by a German with straight face, and German dry humour. One may feel insulted with his straight face dry humour.

Hofbrauhaus is fantastic. From the refreshing beer, to the hearty, meaty food to the corny German theme, Hofbräuhaus offers an experience that will not disappoint. Do the chicken dance for free shots on a Friday night, and come in before 6 to the sister bar next door for fantastic beers at a bargain price. I recommend going with a friend or two and ordering a share platter (and a couple beers of course), so you get a taste of everything.

Highly recommend the beer and pretzels with the traditional cheese! Pretzel was soft and made fresh. It has a real German atmosphere. They play english songs with German covers. The service is excellent! We asked for take away because the food was just that good, going to come back tonight to try the onion rings. Tomorrow morning I'll be eating a pretzel again and going to try the Bavarian hot chocolate.

Service is good but there is no German sour cabbage and chili sauce for this dish to balance the flavor, only the cabbage salad with Little bit vinegar and two slice pickle is not enough to eat with the pork And there is no pork belly today which I really want to eat since I just got back from Frankfurt and had knockel there already so I wang to try different stuffs, but the don’t have any sign for the unviable item Recommend to go from Monday to Friday’s happy hour (half price for the tap beer)

What a fun place. We arrived to hear the band banging out some tunes which was fun. Hofbrauhaus has some great beers, no surprises there I hear you say lol. My Maisel's Weissbeir was fantastic and you've gotta love a stein hahaha. The Rothaus Pilsner was crisp, light and tasty. They also have a new range of vegetarian options which my partner enjoyed such as the cabbage rolls and the potato salad. We didn't try the new vegetarian gnocci this time but we are definitely going back. The pretzels are imported from Germany and they hit the table piping hot! OMGosh they are amaaazing. I could have eaten these all night haha. My pork knuckle was fantastic. Cripsy on the outside, with soft juicy meat that literally fell of the bone. This was perfect. The meat was a little salty, and so moorish. Thanks for the collab.

This is a really authentic Bavarian restaurant! I was born and raised in Bavaria until I was 18, when I walked into this place I had high expectations and they were certainly met! The servers are wearing dirndl and lederhosn ( traditional Bavarian attire), there's a Bavarian flag and lots of fitting decorations, the way the restaurant is built inside is like a typical 'Wirtshaus' too and there was even a LIVE BAND! I was stunned, I loved it, they were great! It was super loud inside which is typical for a place like that back home, so be prepared 😂 I bet not everyone expects that! Our server (Tim? Sam? Sorry i dont remember!) was very nice and he was german too, even better! We ordered Käsespätzle, lemon Schnitzel, a breze and of course beer. My partner was delighted, the Schnitzel and beer was great. The pretzel was as good as it could, I don't think they were selfmade but the frozen ones that you just throw in the oven for a bit. To be honest that didn't bother me, I know they're a lot of work and they still tasted good, I will order one again next time. Authentic pretzels are hard to come by in Australia and this one was very close anyway. The only thing I was extremely disappointed in was the Käsespätzle unfortunately. In Bavaria your Spätzle get roasted with butter, cheese is added and Crispy onions on top, that's it. The one I had was super saucy and oily(which can be seen on the photo too). It came with tomatoes and spinach but I ordered it without that because it doesn't belong in there anyway. While eating it all I could taste was oil, it was so overpowering I couldn't taste anything else. My partner tried and said it was delicious and we ended up swapping meals, he has never tasted the original though so doesnt have a comparisonlike I do. It wasn't a bad dish but it definitely wasn't authentic or what I am used too from home. Maybe that could be worked on. Would also love to see both kinds of Knödel on the menu as well as some kind of Braten, like Sauerbraten. Overall it was GREAT and we will be back to try other things on the menu! 🥨🍻

What an amazing restaurant! A Bavarian restaurant in Chinatown Melbourne, this is as good as it gets. I will definitely come back to this place many times as I love German food and restaurants. Fantastic restaurant and authentic German Bavarian food and beverages, fresh meals, this is very good quality. The staff uniforms are typical Bavarian style, which reminds me of being in Bavaria, which is really refreshing. I have been in Bavaria and it is absolutely wonderful. The staff are nice and friendly and helpful if you are unable to choose, they know the popular dishes and can recommend well. The seating arrangements are really nice and German like. I also admire the artwork in the restaurant. The prices are moderate and affordable. I would recommend any of the sausage or pork dishes on the menu. The pork belly and pork knuckle dishes are fabulous. If you like something different, try the pan roasted duck which is delicious. The Biergarten fish dish is also delicious, which is a very well cooked ocean trout. If you like sausages and can’t pick, then try the sausage platter, filled with nice sausages, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. The place is accessible by transport so if you live near transport then this is recommended as parking prices in the CBD are quite high. Overall, it was a great experience and I would heartily recommend a visit to this restaurant.

This restaurant was taken by my friend to celebrate my birthday. The environment is very retro and the staff are friendly and the food is delicious. There are many choices of wine and they are very special and delicious. It just so happens that the singer there can sing Chinese songs (the moon represents My heart) sang delicious, will go again

Hofbrauhaus is a German restaurant and beer haul located in Melbourne’s CBD. It opened back in 1968 and has been bringing the best Bavarian hospitality ever since. 🇩🇪 We visited with a big group for a birthday, seated in the beer hall upstairs on long wooden tables. The vibe is so fun, with entertainment by a live band that gets the crowd involved with singalongs and competitions. They alternate between the top and bottom level so don’t be concerned about missing out! Onto the food. The Pork was tastier than the Chicken Schnitzel, but both were super crispy and tender. The Sausage was also a hit, paired with a smooth mash. Also enjoyed the chips and the pretzels. No one had any complaints. 👍🏽 Comparing to the other German restaurants in Melbourne, this one is my favourite. Definitely check this one out with a group!

Food was ok. Pork belly was a bit under cooked. Breads were a bit too dense and didn't taste fresh. Huge portion size. Service was good. Prompt & Attentive. Overall 3⭐s

Really good food and great for myself being gluten intolerant, they had quite a few options. I was a bit disappointed they didn't have my first choice on the menu which was the fish dish but I really liked the pork belly I had instead.

We visited last Saturday night for our anniversary dinner and had a wonderful experience! The staff were attentive, friendly and prompt. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the platter and were unable to finish it all and I'm still thinking about it days later! The atmosphere was really cool too. It was an experience as much as it was a dinner. We can't wait to come back!! Definitely visit this place, you will not be disappointed!!

The usual, German pubs are very friendly and welcoming. Foods were to die for! Pork knuckle was succulent and juicy, currywurst sausage was delicious. Great selection of tap beers and non alcoholic ones.

Went for team dinner with work peeps, portion sizes were generous, staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. I ordered bread dumplings, from vegetarian menu. Dish came out to be very very salty, too little mushroom to balance the flavours. Dish looked fancy but not worth 43 -> 30 plus a side of broccolini for 13. From those who had beers, told it was just average, I had juice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night at the Hofbräuhaus. It was a surprise dinner for my Austrian partner and I could tell he had the best time. Fantastic atmosphere, great German food and menu. Can highly recommend.

Missing it already! We ordered the HB feast platter, which is enough for 5 people (3 adults, 2 teenagers). Good service, good food especially the porchetta and good ambience.

Awesome! So good. We had a Brezel, the salmon (main) and chocolate dessert. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was absolutely top-notch, fantastic. The drinks were great too plus the ambience. We were given a table in a quieter area on request. We’ll definitely be back!
