I love visiting jazz bars and I certainly enjoyed this bar. Reservation highly recommended! Pina colada was one of the best cocktails I’ve tasted! Aperol Spritz was good as well. The jazz performance was amazing, with good selections of pieces. The staffs were very attentive and friendly! The only thing I was not the most satisfied with was the social distancing on the bar. While the tables were well distanced, the seats at the bar had no social distancing at all. I was basically seated right next to other people with no shield or anything to come between us. I would certainly visit again, but be seated at the tables!

Excellent staff, great food, and great entertainment. It was a Wednesday night and we were looking for a Jazz bar. The stars aligned and took us Upstairs. We arrived just before the band started playing and were kindly informed that there would be a cover charge for the show, added on to our bill. That was fine and we appreciated being informed so we went in. We didn't have reservations, which help you sit closer to the front, but we could still see the stage. We ordered a couple of drinks, and watched the place quickly fill up. The staff was rushed for the rest of the night. We wanted to wait a while to eat, which helped us out, and we enjoyed our drinks (the wine and Cafe Avril impressed) and the ambiance. We saw meals arriving pretty quickly all around. A lot of burgers were ordered - they did look very good, and make people happy, as did the other dishes we saw. We had pasta and salad and finished with some cider, all of which were delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the show was nice. It was a jazz jam session, and a lot of the musicians connected very well on stage. If you are looking for a good jazz bar and to see a good show, here is a place to go.

Great atmosphere and tasty steak espagnol & canard. Had Moscow mule cause I’m so into ginger beer recently lol

The music was great! My salmon plate, however, wasn’t that great. Very basic vegetables & salmon with plain white rice. It definitely wasn’t worth paying $20+ for, and the portion was so small that I was still hungry and ate again at home. The service was super slow but the waitresses really did their best to make everyone happy and I appreciated it 😊 still a must visit!

Wonderful place to enjoy jazz music and delicious food. I absolutely loved the jazz theme of the restaurant as well! Staff were friendly and strict with overflow when needed. The menus and decor were delightful to look at! Great place to check out the jazz scene.

The burger was good. Fries were average. But I paid $10 for jazz, when the live music hadn't started yet! I asked the waiters twice to bring my beer, but it was so late!

Classic dinner & show experience! Well organized jazz bar with an emphasis on your jazz listening experience 👌 Food was standard bistro fare selection, not bad. Good prices and great service 👍The duck dish was pleasant.

Love this spot. The hosts are amazing, attentive, friendly and accommodating. I have been to see a couple of shows now and the atmosphere is amazing, musicians have all been phenomenal. The food is a delicious, a little pricy but well worth it. You got to book far in advance for shows because it books up very quickly.(usually a week or two, but give them a call). Would recommend this place for any music lovers! This place turned into a local spot for me 10/10!

The music. The atmosphere. The servers were EXCEPTIONAL. everyone was clapping, dancing in their seats, and having the time of their lives. And we went on a Sunday night. We stumbled upon it by accident and are so glad we did. Food was good! Better than expected for a bar.

I highly recommend this bar if you are visiting Montreal as its very unique. The band was amazing!! and the food was even better. The calamari was the best I have ever had and the burger was almost just as good.

Amazing!! The food and music were the perfect way to end the night. The food was cooked to perfection and the flavours were light, yet full. Tiramisu also tasted as if it was homemade!! 🤤 Also, the live music here is spectacular and the vibe in the restaurant was fun and friendly! The only downside was the mediocre service from the waitresses as they often forgot our orders.. But they were still kind about it when they were reminded! Highly recommend this place though. Will definitely come back!!!

I have mixed feelings about my time here with a group. There seemed to be only one waiter, and he getting orders mixed up a lot. We didn't realize the jazz was almost an performance where we weren't supposed to talk. It was very enjoyable, but I think we expected it to just be just background for the meal. The rather unfortunate thing was there was only 15 minutes between sets, which means trying to get our group paid out, and everyone else in the place with only one server was a nightmare. The food itself was okay, I had a steak but the pasta and burgers didn't seem anything special. I think coming here just to see jazz and then leaving with no food is the best way to do it.

Intimate and cozy jazz venue with a full dinner menu. The whole bar is one room, and you can feel a connection to the staff, the performers, and the other patrons. Service was top-notch and very friendly, music was not too loud, and food was great with large portions. They charge a 15$ cover during performances, which is added to your bill.

Montreal is great for live jazz venues, so we went there on a recommendation. Ten dollar cover, but I'm ok with that when there's live music. Really cool atmosphere, and since it was a jam night, there was a wide range of musicians showing off their various talents. Will be stopping in again for sure!

Great service. Our waiter was attentive but not intrusive. Food was fantastic. We heard the Jazz students from McGill. All of the bands put on great shows. You definitely need to make reservations. It was packed. There’s no room for walk-ins. Leave a message; they really do call you back. The tacos were great! Oh and I don’t know what they made their fries from, but they were delicious.

Nice ambient, good service. Didn’t try the food, only drink a good cool beer. But: The night i went to hear an amazing jazz vocalist I needed to make an effort accepting the waitresses was non-stop interrupting, serving food, drinks and water, excessive talking with the clients of the first tables, while performers were playing. I wish this could improove!

Didn't really get to experience the food or drinks there as we went when it was really packed. There was an amazing jazz band playing and we enjoyed the show but from standing near the door as all tables were taken up. In their defense, you probably have to reserve a table much in advance as the place isn't that big to accommodate too many tables.

I'm awarding 5 stars mainly because of my numerous visits over the years, starting back in 2016. The ambiance has consistently been exceptional, and the staff is great. I gave a two-star rating for the service based only on today's experience over the phone. Despite two attempts to cancel my reservation, I couldn't get through as the line seemed busy. Finally, I managed to connect with Upstairs around 6:30 PM. Unfortunately, the person who took my call showed unprofessionalism, questioning my earlier attempts to cancel. I felt their frustration and disappointment regarding my cancellation. However, I didn't cancel because I wanted to. Earlier today, a family member tested positive for Covid. I tried explaining the situation to the person, but I encountered some rude behaviour. I genuinely wish I could have reached Upstairs sooner to avoid this unpleasant situation. It's possible that the person on the phone had a tough and stressful day, which may have contributed to their unprofessional behaviour. I find it hard to believe that an experience like today's could be associated with such a fantastic place like Upstairs.

I had the pleasure to visit this place to experience a flavour of my own culture. I was pleased with their organization, drink prices, friendliness of staff and of course the high quality of the musicians! Next time I'll go for dinner.

Nice boomer place. A bit too dark and crowdy. Low key interior. Jazz is nice. Also, liked the eggplant.

  • 4/5 Jonathan L. 2 years ago on Google
Some of the tables were a bit far from the stage, although there are TV screens that show the stage with almost no lag! The food/drinks are a bit pricy.

  • 5/5 Regan L. 2 years ago on Google
A lovely venue with quality live performances and a cozy atmosphere. The owner, Joel, and his staff such as Octavio were very accommodating, and made what was already a great musical evening, even better. Make sure to call in and reserve a spot in advance if you're interested!

It's one of my best memories from Montreal! I'm from Kazakhstan and it was my 1st time in Quebec! Great food, fantastic atmosphere, great drinks! Performance was absolutely awesome, i so much enjoyed my time there! I would say this is one of the "must visit" places in Montreal! Even if you don't love jazz that much, you will have fun anyway!

We went to a later show and therefor did not order dinner but we had some drinks, a good talk with the staff, some laughs and would definitely recommend to other people! The atmosphere is hip and intimate but is music focused and fun.

Best jazz bar in Montreal. Cozy and intimate venue with knowledgeable bartender and full bar. Music always on point. An excellent date spot.

I'm from Australia and have been away for a couple of Covid years, but was delighted to be welcomed by host Joel, at the door as always. This place is like an old friend - a wonderfully curated selection of jazz, and great service. It's up and swinging again and operating like a well oiled machine, unlike many other venues in Montreal who are desperately short of staff at the moment. Such a joy to reconnect.

We had great time there especially after the COVID lockdown, curfew, it was very nice to enjoy a great performance there! And food is good too! And the service was impressive!

What an amazing date night. Great atmosphere, the staff is extremely nice. Serving tasty drinks and also great food. Even if you are not a huge jazz fan, I recommend trying this bar atleast once.

Amazing vibe great music cant go wrong for live music. Desserts were on point too, unexpected surprise! Full bar, full dinner menu and attentive staff. If you bring your date, you will win great points. Good option to have periods of enjoying the music or intimate chats however the date turns out. Make a reso by phone, highly recommended!

Such a cute, intimate and a beautiful little spot. A true gem indeed. We came from Toronto and didn't make reservations before hand but they promised if anyone canceled they would call. They kept their promise and called! We got seats at the bar, had a delicious dinner and some drinks while being serenaded by the jazz performance,it was magical. The bartenders & staff were delightful. We will definitely visit this spot every time we visit Montreal 💜

The service at the bar was amazing! Drinks were great, music was perfect! We would definitely come back for those. The only downside was the food. We of course didn't try everything on the menu, but the things we have were not great (to say the least) which is sad, because everything else is amazing.

Nice Experience with live Jazz Music! Very cool and smooth Jazz . Very professional players. Was a Great evening

  • 2/5 Mar M. 1 year ago on Google
The live quartet was amazing! The food not so much. The enchilada plate is bad, dry tortilla, and the salsa is the same sauce they use for their potatoes and chorizo. The side salad was half pieces of romaine lettuce. Presentation is bad. Not a good place for food. Go for the Music.

Heard some good jazz here on a Friday evening, 7:00 show. This is a small, tightly packed venue where the uber efficient staff get your drink & food orders quickly. Good, but not exceptional burgers etc, beers, mixed drinks. Come for the music!

  • 5/5 Robbe M. 1 year ago on Google
The menu is very extensive and contained many different dishes at a fair price. In the end I took the empanadas and I was not disappointed! We were lucky enough that a jazz band was playing inside while we were sitting on the terrace, which offered a nice atmosphere.

  • 5/5 Kaleb 1 year ago on Google
Had an awesome night here! Great atmosphere, delicious food and a fantastic live music. The drink menu and wine selection were top notch and the food choices were hard to make! A good problem to have. Everything was very high quality and our server was great. As tourists in the city we felt like we stumbled into a local hangout and loved it. If you want to make this a stop — I would recommend making a reservation well in advance!

Everything was great. Went for a jazz duo on a Thursday. Food wasn’t what we anticipated but it was delicious nonetheless. Got the “Salmon Risotto” and although their menu does say risotto, they just mean rice. Regardless, was still very good. I got the gin martini, which was very very good. My husband got the bourbon smash which was also delicious ( I even thought so and I don’t drink bourbon).

Don't walk, but RUN to Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill! Everything about this place was downright magical: the food, the drinks, and most especially the Jazz were what made our trip to Montreal worthwhile. Impeccable service, kind and attentive staff all around, delish food, and the music! - What a special venue!!!
