The
first
mention
of
the
temple
dates
back
to
1548.
It
was
a
wooden
church
that
burned
down
in
the
great
Moscow
fire
on
April
10,
1629.
In
its
place
by
1634
the
existing
stone
temple
was
built.
For
almost
two
centuries
the
temple
stood
unchanged;
in
1816-1820
the
refectory
and
bell
tower
were
rebuilt.
Since
1620,
next
to
the
church
there
was
a
wooden
temple
of
the
Prophet
Elisha,
built
in
memory
of
the
meeting
of
Tsar
Mikhail
Feodorovich
with
his
father,
Patriarch
Philaret,
who
was
returning
from
Polish
captivity.
In
1636,
the
Eliseevsky
Church
was
replaced
by
a
stone
one
and
stood
until
the
middle
of
the
19th
century.
When
the
temple
was
abolished,
its
altar
was
moved
to
the
neighboring
Church
of
the
Resurrection
of
the
Word,
the
Pokrovsky
chapel,
which
was
reconsecrated
into
the
Eliseevsky
chapel.
(According
to
other
sources,
the
Eliseevsky
Church
was
abolished,
with
the
transfer
of
its
throne
to
the
Resurrection
Church,
during
the
restoration
of
Moscow,
which
burned
out
during
Napoleon’s
invasion
in
1812).
In
the
second
half
of
the
19th
century,
the
windows
of
the
temple
were
cut
out
and
given
keel-shaped
plaster
frames
in
the
Russian
style.
In
1897,
according
to
the
design
of
the
architect
Alexander
Meisner,
the
upper
tiers
of
the
bell
tower
were
replaced
with
new
ones
in
pseudo-classical
forms,
after
which
the
building
acquired
a
modern
appearance.
In
the
20th
century
In
the
1930s,
during
the
godless
era,
the
temple
was
not
closed
(thanks
to
numerous
requests
from
famous
artists
who
lived
next
to
it
on
Nezhdanova
Street),
but
the
bells
were
removed.
In
1963-1964,
1979
and
1982-1986,
restoration
work
was
carried
out
in
the
temple.
For
four
decades,
Metropolitan
Pitirim
of
Volokolamsk
and
Yuryev
served
in
the
Church
of
the
Resurrection
of
the
Word.
