😠 Unfortunately, we aren't able to try the food as even after 25 min they still hadn't taken our drinks order. There was hardly anyone making sure the patio was serviced. It wasn't busy, we were just ignored after they showed us our table. People often mention great, good, service, patio, atmosphere, nice, delicious, Great, chicken, drinks,

Very secluded location for a byward market restaurant. It has a wonderful garden backyard patio with stones. As a vegetarian I had the most delicious cauliflower wings/bites ever (they beat the pure kitchen ones). The desserts were delicious and I really enjoyed my meal.

The beef brisket sandwich, the Scotch egg, the beef tartare were amazing. Atmosphere is great and service is most excellent. Cocktail was good too! But those French fries though.... were out of this world 😂

I learned about the Clarendon Tavern from Google Maps, and the decision about my visit depended on the rating. From the outside, the tavern looks unassuming. And a completely different feeling arises when you get into the courtyard. There is an absolutely European atmosphere here. In the courtyard of brick building under the trees shade on the cobblestone pavement there are many tables. On the my visit day (Sunday, noon) it wasn't crowded. As for the food, it seemed to me quite tasty. 3 Egg omlette, homefries🍟 and buttered sourdough🍞 were delicious and fresh. The cappuccino was also great! But, my dear Canadians, to be completely honest, I'm not a big fan of such carbohydrate breakfasts, consisting of hash browns, toasts, jam and ketchup and the like. All this is very likely to lead to obesity. And this is not a claim to the tavern (all the dishes were cooked very well), it's rather a claim to the entire North American culinary tradition. I would suggest introducing a healthier alternative🥦. If we talk about the service, it was timely, polite and courteous. I was satisfied!!! The Clarendon Tavern is the only place in Ottawa I've been, but my experienced Local Guide eye indicates that this place claims to be the best in the city!!!

We sat in the beautiful courtyard on a warm summer's evening. It was the best place we found during our trip because no street people pestered us. It was pure class to be sitting there. See pics. We went during happy hour on a Wednesday; the happy hour menu is superb and very competitively priced. The duck flatbread was superb (see pic). As was the fried cauliflower. If the weather is good you must try this place, and make sure you choose the right area of the courtyard because there are 4 restaurants sharing the space. Our server Ihab was fantastic. This will be our lasting memory of the trip to Ottawa compared to the filth and beggars that seem to be prevalent in the ByWard Market area.

First time for brunch. We sat on the patio on a beautiful Saturday morning. The sun was out, nice summer breeze and the birds were signing. Great outdoor atmosphere. The maple Buffalo chicken and waffles were well presented and most importantly, delicious. The orange pineapple mimosas were a the perfect side. Let’s not forget the friendly yet efficient service. Great way to start the weekend.

I came here for brunch with a group of girls. We all loved everything about it - the food, atmosphere and service were all excellent! We also had some dietary restrictions in the group (one vegetarian, one dairy free) that were easily accommodated. I can’t wait to come back for dinner one day!

The two of us enjoyed dinner enough to return the next evening with three friends. Rose sangria was light and not too boozy. Gravilax trout on beets is a keeper. Salad with trout on top was great. Good selection of a dozen beers and a full bar. Good value for money. Cheerful bartender/server both nights. Added scenes of the bar side.

2023-11-10: tried this place the first time. We were there for happy hour (not many places in Ottawa offer happy hour until 6pm!). The cocktails were delicious and they have lots of choices. The cauliflower was so good that we ended up ordering 3 plates instead of sharing 1 among 3 people 🤣. The pizzas and wings were yummy too. We will definitely go back!

This is one of my favourite restaurants in the Byward Market. I always order their beef flatbread, and I’m never disappointed! The cocktails are great, the courtyard patio is cute, but the service is slow. I think they may be understaffed like so many other places these days. Overall, I would recommend, just don’t go if you’re in a rush!

Great ambience and great food. Tasty cocktails! All around great. However, we were really disappointed with the increase in meal price. Some of the items have almost doubled in cost. I understand the pandemic has been hard for restaurants but I found the increase in price to be quite extravagant. Despite the warm atmosphere and great food, I left feeling disappointed and knew that I wouldn’t be returning.

A great place in Ottawa that we always try to make it to. Food is always tasty, rich and flavourful, scotch egg is a favourite that is always ordered, and the cocktails are exceptionally well made. The staff are courteous, entertaining and always helpful. The ambience is cozy and warm. Overall a great spot in a fantastic location. Great for a meal or to pop in for a drink and snacks.

Very nice tavern suitable for either a quiet cozy dinner or a sports bar atmosphere. The staff are friendly and service is very good. They have a good selection of area beers. They have excellent happy hour deals. Prices are generally reasonable even if portions are slightly small. We had a couple of their pizzas which were great and chicken wings which were good. We will be back!

Had breakfast here. They accomodated us at the last minute of their breakfast hour. Good srvice and food. Paid parking building right next to the restaurant. Walking distance away from parliament, so this is a great stop before or after you visit it.

We went here for Sunday dinner, and because the winter weather was not great it was quiet. We enjoyed two of the most delicious pork loin dinners we've ever had after sharing a deconstructed cob salad. The service was pleasant but not at all pushy. We had drinks plus wine with dinner.

I love the place! I love the "ambiance", but unfortunately the food is not that good. Short options. Actually, to be honest, the food tastes good but I'd like to have more options. I'm always having the same "caponata" dish or salad. But the place... nice things were celebrated there in my family.

I visited twice during a work trip due to their incredibly happy hour ($10 pizzas, $9 cauliflower 'wings' and $10 cocktails). The service was friendly and efficient, and the ambience is awesome (brick walls, hardwood floors, historic character). Highly recommend stopping in and trying their food and fun cocktails (the "Cats Meow" was a great mix of sour and sweet with a touch of bitterness).

My date and I were at the Clarendon Tavern on the evening of Dec. 9 2023 for drinks and dessert. The bartender was absolutely amazing, maybe some of the best service I've ever had! I'm alcohol-free and his mocktails were awesome. Also, he picked up on our less than enthused reaction to one of the desserts from across the bar and quickly took care of us! I wish I had gotten his name - he deserves the recognition!

I was so impressed by this restaurant! They had only one vegan option on the menu (the hummus platter) but I asked if they could make the flatbread without cheese and they did. They compensated by adding extra veggies which were cooked just right and the sauce was so delicious. Our server was amazing, went with a group of 7. She was kind, thoughtful and very attentive. Will definitely come back here!

Such a cozy vibe inside, very nicely decorated. Food was delicious, had the braised beef. Very yummy. Not a ton of craft beers ( Calabogie mostly), service was a bit inexperienced but overall it was fine. The patio in the courtyard though is KILLER!!

Do NOT recommend. Waited 20 minutes for 6 wait-staff while it was not busy. Beautiful courtyard but would recommend going to any other resturant in the same courtyard.

Visited this place for brunch. Friendly staff. Courtyard sitting are perfect for summer heat. Brunch menu was small however they have options for everyone, kitchen is small so might be hard to do certain modifications so might be good idea to call ahead to check. Brunch mimosas are delicious!

Hidden Gem! Beautiful quiet court yard. Staff extremely helpful and attentive. Quality and taste is amazing. Ordered 3 dishes, Duck Confit pizza, Trout and Cod and Chips. Everything was extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. Dessert was excellent and amazing finish.

The food was really good except maybe for the pizza which was really dry and very basic for the prize I paid. Our waitress was very nice and we liked her a lot, though our table was right beside the bar (inside) and everytime the other waiters would come back they would scream and laugh loudly. So loud, sometimes I couldn’t hear what my friend was saying. Maybe it would’ve been better if we chose to sit outside, but it was crazy hot and humid so we thought the inside would be a better idea…guess not?

  • 3/5 Carole W. 2 years ago on Google
Really great service, but the food is not so good. I had a veggie burger and the patty was basically the texture of mashed potatoes. My friends had the trout and said that there was zero seasoning and tasted like it had been microwaved from frozen. The dessert was also disappointing - the compote on the cheesecake was sour and off. The apple crumble was ok. Hope they can work on the recipes.

Great patio space in The Courtyard. Excellent food. I found the beer options to be a little lacking but there’s at least something tolerable for most people. One huge positive for us: they make their Sangria the same way as our favourite one which we discovered in Puerto Rico - made with Cognac! There were 2 other minor issue that contributed to my choosing 4/5. One was the chairs were metal and very uncomfortable and there were multiple items on the drink & food menus that weren’t available for whatever reason.

  • 4/5 Andy 1 year ago on Google
Only ordered drinks here - they were made decently well. Cool patio atmosphere as well, sort of like being in Europe. I would call it a hidden gem in the market. Good place for a date. Haven’t tried the food.

I am brokenhearted that I have ignored this space after the Black Tomato closed. The food here is fantastic. Fairly simple, straightforward recipes in the mains section shine. The apps are pretty delightful too. In addition to the best patio in the city. I'd say that this is one of Ottawa's best.

Went for brunch on Sunday Oct 16 at 1pm. My friend ordered eggs benedict. The eggs were hard boiled, the hollandaise sauce was hardened onto the eggs and the English muffins were so tough she could barely cut through them. I ordered the chicken and waffles. Their waffle maker was not functioning so I asked for pancakes instead of the waffles with the chicken as I figured the batter would be the same. The waitress brings out a plate of sweet pancakes with whip cream and berries with a piece of hot sauce covered fried chicken on top.... I clearly stated i just wanted pancakes with the chickens and waffles dish, not a stack of sweet pancakes with hot sauce covered chicken. It took them the entirety of my friend eating her meal for them to bring out my actual meal, which is incredibly rude. Not sure how you mess something like that up. The waitress did bring us a mimosa for free and some of my meal was comped but the entire meal should have been free. What a disaster of a restaurant. Horrible experience, do not waste your time here. There are far better places in the Byward market that deserve your time and money.

Nice ambience that is great for a date but the food is average. The service was super good. We got the friend chicken plate and sandwich, the chicken was totally burnt, I directly asked the waitress that we cannot eat that. They served us new unburnt chicken pieces, that tasted fine but definitely other places have better fried chicken sandwiches.

Went for lunch with work colleagues. Everyone loved their food. Pictured is my meal, salad, and French onion soup. The dressing on the salad was divine. The broth of the soup had an awesome flavour that included some smokiness … super yum!

The food was alright not the best really! i got the vegetarian burger and it was very dry, no juicyness! My friend got a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and he said it was just alright. The deep-fried brownie was very dry as well and it was not the typical great ending dessert. However, I think this place is most popular for their drinks and atmosphere. The drinks were great and I really liked the restaurant vibe and charming atmosphere! The server was also very pleasant and attentive.

Came here for brunch with my girlfriend for our anniversary. The atmosphere was cool and food was really tasty (we had the smoked hash no meat and spinach eggs benny). Good coffee! Will come again and would recommend!!

The ambiance was nice, the service was good, but we ordered the tomato and basil Pizza and it was terrible. The dough was dry and there was nothing on it but cheddar cheese. We must have come on a bad night because the other reviews look pretty good. But that pizza was seriously bad.

What great ambiance, Reminded me and my son of our trip to London last year. The servers had great knowledge of whiskey and also guided in the right direction when we wanted some smoked cocktails. I opted for the old fashioned and boy was it a show. We will be back soon maybe we may bring our wives along next time. Thanks Guys

Was here for lunch with a group on a quiet day. Not many other customers, but still took quite a awhile for mains to arrive. Atmosphere okay, service okay but slow, mixed reviews from most on their lunches (pizza so-so, veggie burger so-so, fried chicken to-do, onion soup so-so, desserts so-so). Not terrible, not great. Prices on the high end for the overall experience. Didn't appreciate the auto 18% group tip, as I didn't feel it was quite justified, but such is the nature of group lunches at some restos. Overall, intriguing menu, but could not recommend.

Went here with family for a nice quiet dinner. Atmosphere is nice, menu is a little over priced. The bread was delicious, but my burger was almost non existent between my bun. It couldn't have been more then a 4 or 5 ounce burger. It was a dry lil puck between a nice bun. Side note: Bacon was awesome. To go with the tiny dry burger there was a tiny scoop of fries in a lil metal cup. All this for just 19$... Sarcasm implied. Can't recommend.

First off they were closing early and told us the kitchen was only open for 15 minutes so we rushed to order. Additionally we asked asked how many people their "pizza" would serve. We were told it was 9 to 10 inch pizza. He then told us it would serve one to two people. This could not be further from the truth. He was correct in saying that is was 9 inches but it was 9 inches long but only 3.5 inches wide. This would barley server a toddler. Henceforce I will never returned.
