This place is definitely not for Indians. The food they serve is not even 5% of the authentic food. South Indians will definitely be disappointed. We as a group went here for the dinner and it was the near by Indian restaurant so we chose it.

Called a few friends in southern California about where is the best place to eat Indian food, they directed us to this little gem at friendly corner if San Diego. Dinner started with two very delicious samosa's with very savory tamarind chutney as well as the fresh mint chutney. The crust of this samosa is what really caught my eye. It wasn't greasy or oily, it was very light and airy just appropriately seasoned. The potato filling was not overpowered by spice to let you enjoy the accompanied chutney. These were really fresh, you can usually tell an old samosa by the way the filling tastes. We ordered 2 dishes, channa masala (garbanzo beans in curry sauce) as well as chicken tikka masala. Along with that we ordered 2 naans and the meals came with what tasted like fine grain basamati. Let me start with the naan bread. We ordered plain naans and could easily tell that this was very delicious dough which was appropriately proved for at least overnight. Given the shape and texture, a tandoor must have been used. Not chewy at all and required little effort to tear apart. Ranks amongst some of the best for the naan bread I've eaten at a restaurant. The channa masala was delightful as well. Not overpowered by tomatoes with a masala which can hide the taste of the beans. Again, another tasty dish. I ordered it medium spiced which was perfect. Lips were not burning but just enough to make the food go "kaboom!" Chicken was excellent as well. Wasn't chewy or rubbery. This chicken was so juicy and tender it was like it came out of a sous vide. Someone here has perfected making this dish. I can't say anymore than if your kids normally eat chicken strips and fries they will be instantly converted to Indian chicken. Didn't stop for desert, I thought the portions were generous and had no more room. I wanted to meet the chef and the very lovely hostess introduced us to Adam. Wanted to thank him for making my taste buds happy! Being of Indian ancestry we are very critical of Indian food. This tasted like home cooking for sure. We didn't have a chance to try the rest of the items on the menu, will definitely come back here the next time we visit San Diego. This was an unsolicited review, I am not a professional food critic. As a traveler I rely on objective reviews to make decisions where to eat. This one gets 5 stars for sure.

More decoration less food. "Less is more" don't work with Indian food.

Amazing first time and will DEFINITELY be back!! Every dish, all were vegetarian, was absolutely better than expected and way above anything in the neighborhood. Authentic with some really unique bends on taste. The service is as good as the food!!!

This is some of the best Indian food I've ever had and the ambiance is wonderful. If you're looking to have some great food with some great company in a quaint space, look no further!

The staff was nice and professional and the setting is pleasant enough. The menu is very, very limited though. The vegetable samosas are fried in the same oil as the meat samosas despite being labeled as vegan or vegan upon request. The paratha is not paratha. I’ve had paratha both here in the states and in India and this is not it. It’s a dry croissant that flakes apart upon contact and is very, very difficult to eat with and it leaves flakes everywhere. I had the dal makhani and it was ok but I’ve also had better from those Indian dinners you can get pre-prepared in those foil packets at the grocery store. It wasn’t a terrible experience but particularly with all the great local Indian options I won’t be back and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Downgraded from 5 to 2 stars. The food has become overly sweet and over priced. Example we had paneer added to our meals last night and they charged us nearly $5 each extra for what was approximately 1/8th cup of paneer. That's roughly $40 lb for a cheese I can make at home for less than $5 lb. No drinks and no dessert and our bill was almost $60 for two people. Even with the tip included as they do, their food just isn't that good. We won't be going back.

Doesn’t look Indian owned but definitely tastes better than the Indian restaurants in Mira Mesa.

3.5 stars for the food. The Tikka masala and vindaloo sauces were both sour and not at all spicy- contrary to how they're supposed to taste. The dal makhani was excellent though and so were the naans. 5 stars for the chai- very well spiced- probably some of the best I've had at a restaurant. They gave us a free refill too. 4 stars for the service. The restaurant seems severely understaffed. There was only one server when we were there and she held the fort really well but service was still quite slow.

The best thing I've tried here is the mulligatawny soup. I could eat that every day for a month. The Tikka Masala uses coconut milk - a big help for those with lactose sensitivity! The garlic cilantro naan is also worth trying.

Not much of choices available as thry have a set of fixed menus and you can select only from them and it's like a mix and match. But the food is decent and the ambient is good. Worth a try to visit this location and try it.

This is our favorite date spot. The tikka masala is fantastic and so are the veggie samosas. Definitely recommend! The staff are nice and service is great. Zach was our waiter and the creator of the pomegranate mint lemonade. Mad props! I'll definitely be back! Best place in OB

Parking in the back! Hard to find in the San Diego area these days. Met with a warm smile and a hearty menu! The ribs were hot and full of flavor! The waitress did warn me that their extra extra hot vindaloo was often too hot for people (it wasn’t for me). Everything tasted magnificent!

First time eating here tonight. My partner and I love Indian food places/Himilayan food places. We decided to give this place a try since we got an advertisement for it in the mail. The food wasn't horrible but it had some weird off tangy flavors, as some others have mentioned in their reviews, that both my partner and I have not experienced before. The 2 entrees we recieved also tasted as if they were made with canned tomatos or sauce that overwhelmed the dishes. I don't think we will be back.

Sundara offers 3 entrees... That does not sound like the menu of an Indian restaurant... While it does not celebrate the limitless variety that the Indian cuisine has to offer, what it does offer, it does well...

Best Indian restaurant in SD. Simple and small, but great food.

  • 5/5 Ameri - R. 5 years ago on Google
Small, cozy, comfy and the food is pretty good. It is a nice little date spot if your interested in trying something new. The menu isn't that big and each meal is around $12 so it's kinda pricey but worth it. The Garlic Naan bread is a must try. However I dont think I would go back there because of the price. Parking is difficult to find so be prepared to arrive early to find parking.

Good Indian cuisine used to be hard to come by in Point Loma. You had to go elsewhere in San Diego. Not anymore. Run don't walk, to Sundara!!!

Another one of my favorite places in OB! Everything is so good! I always get the channa masala, naan and the veggie samosas. Also the chocolate samosas and the rice pudding are to die for! I usually get take out but the atmosphere is really cute if you want to dine in but it is a lil small. They have a small parking lot in the back. Staff is always super friendly!

Delicious!! Only got the Indian pizza this time and it was great mix of cruisines. The aroma from the neighboring tables smelled great, look forward to returning and trying out more at this gem!

I give this place two thumbs up. Prices are decent for the quality. Feels similar to a restaurant in Philadelphia that I enjoyed visiting.

Can't say enough how great this place is! Everytime something new hits the menu I'm blown away with their inventive take on Indian food. Its def not a traditional Indian food joint, but if you enjoy the spices used in Indian cuisine and wanna see creativity at work in that palette this place is a total gem! (Garam Masala baby back ribs.... Mmmmm!)

Sundara is in my top 5 places to eat in San Diego. Pound for pound with menya ultra, grand ole bbq, kettner exchange, etc, etc. Sundara always delivers with tons of flavor, great sauces, great execution. They do everything very well. Hard to believe that more people dont know about this

hands down, best samosas in town.. felt like my mom had made them, it was so perfectly flaky, and light with a great amount of filling. We also tried the tandoori chicken, which was well prepared, fall of the bones soft and tender. Surprising item on menu is the chicken chicharrones, its a must try item with the tamarind chutney. Eggplant Raita was delicious as well. Food is prepared at the site daily, and made with a lot of love. Nothing is too spicy, everything was flavorful!! 10/10 will recommend and go again

Such a cozy friendly place. The food was amazing. We will definitely go back and have already recommended it to friends. The service was excellent and the food presentation lovely. Prices are medium. They include a service charge rather than tipping which means (hopefully) they pay their staff a decent wage. Interesting choice of music though. As much as we like classic rock it seemed an odd selection for an intimate dining experience.

I will explain my part. I went to this place on Valentine's day with my husband. We were expecting this must be a good place, because it was fully occupied on the front side of the hall. Front desk person recieved us in a hurry but she was nice enough put us in the backside of the hall! We were surprised how sweet people are talking to us, professional! It was a busy place for togo order so they made us small wait to get some water which is understandable! We dont mind waiting. But after us three tables were occupied. They come took the order which was just a samosas veg curry and two rotis n mangolassi . We waited and waited for our food. But people who came after us ordered and they got their order and started eating too. Finally they bring our food after almost 1 hour wait we already were highly disappointed and upset by that time. Their mango lassi just tasted like plain lassi made us so uncomfortable to be there. May be they are trying to save the mango pulp from recipe or something I dont know. We almost felt like leaving at this point. My husband likes original mango lassi and hates plain lassi. But he drank it. Because we dont like to waste food especially when it is expensive place like here! Samosas were smaller in size stuffing was okay. Like the crust though Very good crust! Curry tasted really good and rich texture! they gave us very less rice quantity though and roti was so small. and charge for refilling the rice! We did not tip anything. Since they charged us for service fee already! Overall we didnt feel we are welcomed there, highly disappointed! Expensive and Conservative place!!

Small restaurant that also seems to do a good take-out business. My wife and I enjoyed their Indian cuisine. We had Samosa, chicken Tikka masala. naan bread, mulagatani soup.
