Absolutely phenomenal views at sunrise and sunset and even if you don’t want to do the very short easy hike to the hole in the rock, the well maintained flat trails are perfect for an easy walk with amazing desert views. Would highly recommend for a time-limited outing with a ton of bang for your buck. Also so easy even a baby or elderly person could walk all these trails and even go up to the hole in the rock.

. Totally wonderful perspectives at the crack of dawn and dusk and regardless of whether you believe should do the exceptionally short simple climb to the opening in the stone, the very much kept up with level paths are ideally suited for a simple stroll with astounding desert sees. Would energetically suggest for a period restricted outing with a lot of value for your money. Likewise so natural even a child or older individual could walk this large number of trails and, surprisingly, go up to the opening in the stone.

Real beautiful and MUST visit place in Phoenix. This location is a heaven for photography. Two beautiful lakes, palm trees, mountain with a hole in the rock, adds to the beauty of this park. This location is good for family picnics, photography, especially for the views of beautiful Arizona sunset. Crowded over the weekend but week days, its pretty much quiet.

So much to do in this park. Hike, picnic, fish, take in the views. I went around the lake and hiked to the hole in the rock. About a 15min stroll. Not difficult. A little rocky with some steep areas that have stairs etched into the rock to make it easier. The views from there are great. Parking is sufficient and there are various lots around the park. Enjoy

Very nice and clean park. Ended up a few different places. All were easily hiked with our corgi and me the novice hiker. Beautiful views. The hole in the rock can get crowded fast but it is popular spot. We enjoyed or morning with hiking 4 miles total on various trails.

Great local hot spot to come and get your fill of the full energy of an Arizona Sunset. This location offers a rather easy walk to your destination, but offers a views on all sides from the ground as well. For people just seeking to have a nice view of the AZ skyline before dark, this is it. For those seeking a moderate to experience hike followed up with the reward of a beautiful setting skyline, this is not your destination. As an experienced hiker, I sought this location with the intention to have a decent workout leading into a rewarding sunset. However, I would describe this place as more a local gathering/socialization/tourist Hotspot rather than an actual challenge partnered with the aethetic reward at the end. Overall, this place is a really cool and unique location to experience, just try to arrive early as it fills up QUICK the closer to sunset you arrive.

Hole in the rock is very simple but still cool to see. You can get some nice photos, and the short hike is super easy. There are a bunch of mtb trails that are super fun. You Could definitely ride out there for a while and not ride the same trail twice.

My kid loved the Hole in the Rock so much, we had to return to the park twice to see it again. Great and super-easy family hike.

For a beautiful, yet family-friendly hike, head to Papago Park. There's a large parking lot with information boards and drinking fountains nearby. Then follow the path to the rocks great for climbing. My wife, six-year-old daughter and I loved the short hike and scramble up the rocks for a beautiful view of the area.

What a great place to walk. I know I could’ve said hike but since were in the city and hike is to strong a word. You don’t have to hike to get to really sending views. If you can walk up a hill with a slight grade, you can do this... It is a beautiful place to walk.

Nice place to go trail hiking, pretty easy going, just wear the right shoes and wear sunblock. Nice looking at cacti and the surrounding plant life, some small critters too if you look carefully.

Always a joy to walk through the Park. Make sure to stop by Hole in the Rock for a terrific view of Metro Phoenix. Beautiful landscapes and desert plants, plus you can always stop by the Phoenix Zoo or Dessert Botanical Gardens. Highly recommended.

Very cool spot for a light hike. We had gone on more strenuous hikes this week, so we wanted more of a scenic walk close to our hotel. We used the Double Butte trail, and it was a fun walk. Not hard on my knees. Lots of bunnies and cool views of the red rocks. It felt like we were on Mars.

I visited hole in the mountain in papago park. It is a small hike. The best time to visit hole in the mountain would be to see sunset. Amazing sunset view and experience. Sun setting behind the pheonix skyline is just a wonderful scenery from here.

This is a beautiful area but I do not feel safe visiting. There is a high population of homeless people and their makeshift shelters are around the trails. The parking lot and park also attract many homeless people. I wish the Tempe police enforced park opening and closing hours and other restrictions so I could enjoy this beautiful place with my kids!

Great spot to visit if your feeling energetic enough to climb up to the Hole in the Rock, or do a little fishing or just have a nice family picnic. I enjoyed my time there, I just wish people would stop leaving their trash around. And this includes these masks. Whatever you bring in, please take it with you when you go!

This is probably not going to be a tourist hot spot anytime soon. But residents of Phoenix love this little park and its overlook of the Phoenix and Tempe skylines. Dog friendly and most physique levels will have no problem with the walks or the trails. A jogger's desert haven.

Beautiful place to watch the sunset. Trail up to the hole in the rock is pretty easy to get up so no experience or special equipment, but for comfortable shoes is needed. There is not a lot of parking, so get there early. One lot is close to hole in the rock. Another is less then a quarter mile around the corner. Bring water and enjoy the view.

Was really cool to experience this park. There were a lot of people but surprisingly the park was really clean and all the equipment was in good standing. My son loved playing at the small park near the restrooms. And also loved the hole in the rock. Will go here again.

This park is amazing! Great place to hike! I love taking my foster dogs here! Only complaint is weather restrictions. This park is way too hot in the summer because it’s rocks and asphalt, no grass. The only reason I give 4/5 is that it’s a seasonal park for me. Again lovely views and you can even watch the giraffes inside the zoo if you’re lucky.

Amazing place to take the kids and spend the day outside, have a picnic and just enjoy a nice afternoon And if you want you can even enjoy the pheonix zoo which is right next store

It is a perfect place if you love nature and outdoor activities. We went on a family hiking and it was a lot of fun. It might be a little bit challenging to climb this mountain so I think some preparation is required. However, when you reach the top you'll get a wide view of the city, especially adorable during sunset. The nearest parking lot is a little bit far from the mountain, so it is best to take a taxi.

We called this the "hole in the rock", in the 80's and I still enjoy going there, because its in town but feels like your not! It is one of the gems of the valley! Great view for the opening at top! Stay on the path, please! There's covered picinic tables for your relaxation and to take all the gorgeous view in! Keep the beauty going for the next generations!

A great place to hike at night when the temperature descends. But take precautions because you need plenty of water and in some parts the GPS doesn't work. The road crosses the park which is great if you drive. There is a bike route (challenging but cool) The Memorial is a small place. The golf park is right next to rocks. Great first experience in Phoenix but too hot during July -August

Hiking options include easy, difficult and do at your own risk. We did a mix of the first 2 recreating our times going as kids. It is touristy now so plan accordingly, waiting to enter the hole and climbing around the front of the hill. People hike up and just sit anywhere making it a bit difficult to fully enjoy the hiking and rock climbing areas. Besides hole in the rock there is a zoo, hiking trails, fishing spot, picnic areas and breathtaking views. You must wear tennis shoes or hiking footwear as there are lots of rocks, snakes, scorpions and other creatures in the area. Take plenty of water and sunscreen on the hikes.

The park was extremely busy over Christmas break, but it was still relatively easy to park and walk up. Pretty good view and an easy hike, I did not hike all the way to the to the rock. There’s also an area close by with many palms and some water (and a small white pyramid, I have no idea what’s up with that). Would recommend for almost anyone not in a wheelchair.

A great little diamond hiding right in the open. Nestled between Tempe and Phoenix just across from the Phoenix zoo and the Papago golf course. It's a nice hiking area for beginners on up to the more experienced hikers. You can bring your mountain bike and go riding around the trails as well. Nice place for a family trek.

  • 5/5 Allyson D. 4 years ago on Google
Plenty of trails and right next to Tempe Town Lake and Hole in the Rock hiking trails. Peaceful and not very populated right now. We saw a butterfly field, Herons and Quail. We did see 2 makeshift homeless shelters off the beaten track, but no homeless or unsavory folk walking around. Very stress relieving. Oh, and trout in the stream.

Until quite recently... and ironically just before it was cut off to me due to shelter-in-place. I live beyond the mandated five-mile radius, so venturing there has not been an option now. But I started taking the three-mile walk from Ocean Beach all the way to Stanyan with some regularity even though it was made somewhat adventuresome from the vehicular traffic. What I began noticing were all the less marketed jewels of the park like the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, Lloyd Lake with the picturesque torrent and the Portals of the Past, the Bison Paddock, the top of Strawberry Hill in Stow Lake, and the quietude of Shakespeare's Garden and the National AIDS Memorial Grove

I love Papago Park. I recommend to visit the Pueblo museum that is not far away from it. One can find more information about the history and importance of this place. The hole in the rock had an important use. Check it out. Be careful when climbing and hiking. Always, protect from the heat, the sun, stay hydrated, wear a hat, watch for snakes and have fun.

First and foremost the homeless camps are out of control and they add large amounts of trash, used needles, and graffiti to the park. There has also been three fires due to the "urban camping". It is no longer safe at night and the City of Tempe has done nothing to keep residents and tourists safe. There are better parks to visit that are in the area.

Nice park. Lots of rabbits running around, nice fishing pond area, they have catfish, large mouth bass & rainbow trout here. Beautiful view looking East, West, North & South. Planes constantly flying over to land at Sky Harbor Airport. Nice view of the hole on Papago. And the hike up to it is fairly easy & short. This is a fun and easy place to visit right in the middle of the Phoenix area. There are many walking trails, picnic table, scenic picture locations, and convenient location. There were a lot of people there when I took my walk at sunset. But it wasn’t a crowded feeling.

It is an excellent area to ramble around the desert with different regions with lakes and rest sites to have picnics and restrooms. There are many options to walk around the "hole in the rock" with different routes and excellent views.

Very nice hike. Not overly challenging but did provide a nice work out. Amazing views that are nearby the other parks

Good course. Some areas between greens and tees need some work. They are dirt areas with mini potholes. Bunkers are good. Greens were firm and didn't really hold but I expected that going in.

Free admission. Be sure to come at sunset—you’ll have a great view of Phoenix from the Hole in the Rock! It was January when we came, but the weather felt like fall.

very short hike to the hole in the rock, but it still feels good to be in the shade once you get to the top!

I recently visited Papago Park, and it was a fantastic experience! The red rock formations are truly unique, and the hiking trails offered breathtaking views. The park's cleanliness and maintenance are impressive, and the desert garden is a neat addition. If you're a nature lover and enjoy hiking, Papago Park is a must-visit for an exciting outdoor adventure.

Beautiful park. Spent most of a day until it got too hot. Go as early as you can. Still hot end of September.
