While in Rome be sure to visit St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums even if you aren’t Catholic. The crowds are tremendous and it’s very, very hot especially in the summer months. Even though it’s super hot, be sure to keep yourself covered. It is disrespectful to have your shoulders bare and to wear short skirts, dresses and super short shorts. If you aren’t dressed properly, you will be given paper like clothing to cover up or be denied entry. It would be helpful to do a bit of research online before visiting to understand the extraordinary history and pieces of art you will be seeing. Expect to spend at least 3-5 hours exploring. You can easily spend an entire day and wonder where the time went. The shops are plentiful and apparently everything in them is blessed by the Pope. The line and wait to get into the Sistine Chapel is very long but worth waiting to see. It is amazing and, for most people, a once in a lifetime experience. Be sure to look up and enjoy one of the most famous and celebrated interior paintings in world by Michelangelo 1508-1512. It is absolutely breathtaking.

The basilica is very impressive in its grandeur and no pictures I have seen could replicate the feeling of being inside. You may pass the security line in a reasonable time and won't need skip the line services if you arrive before 10am. Entering the underground area "grottoes" is also free, it is interesting to see the old and new burials of the popes, but note that the exit from the grottoes is to the outside of the basilica to where the entrance to the dome tours is.

The most incredible building I've ever been inside. So expansive and glorious. The gold finishes, sculptures, mosaics and marble line floor to ceiling. There is an obscene amount of tourists but it is still incredibly beautiful. I would love to see it when there are no tourists to experience a service or meditation in the space.

St. Peter’s Basilica is nothing short of breathtaking. Its grandeur, intricate details, and spiritual significance make it an architectural wonder. The sheer size and beauty of the interior, adorned with stunning artworks and intricate designs, are awe-inspiring. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Rome that’s truly unforgettable. Despite occasional crowds, the serenity and reverence within this sacred space remain palpable. A visit here is an essential part of experiencing the history, art, and spirituality that Rome has to offer.

The Basilica is absolutely amazing it looks great and it’s worth spending some money to access the top of the basilica as you get an amazing view of Rome and the Vatican from here. The scale of the building makes it amazing. Very busy in the mornings due to mass so it is easier to get into during the evenings as the lines are very very very long and tedious at morning time. Must go place if you are visiting Rome. Architecture of the building is so beautiful. The paintings/ frescos are really pretty.

You will wait for hours, unless you get there around 830am. Our wait to get through security was less than -10 minutes arriving at that time. Climbing the dome steps is not for the faint of heart. As you can see by this video, things get pretty tight for the last 100 out of 500 steps up. There is a nice cafe at the half-way point through on the roof. If you are in reasonably good shape though, we enjoyed the walk as the views seem Like a ‘reward’ for the effort.

After a quick elevator ride which takes you about half way and you have to walk a set of winding corkscrew stairs a few hundred steps. We took our a 1.5 year old daughter strapped to the chest so it is quite the workout. But well worth the effort as it is a thrilling view at the top of the dome. From this vantage point there are panoramic 360 degree views outside onto all corners of the square and Vatican city. Inside you can see down into the basilica and amazing interior from up above. Even part way down the views are spectacular. Definitely worth going to Vatican city and up the dome to see this magnificent place.

Absolutely breathtaking! The size of this building is astonishing! We went very early in the morning to avoid the 3+ hour line and it was worth getting up at 7am! We stumbled onto a couple of different services going on at the same time. We attended mass at the main alter and even being non-religious, it was something to behold.

Well worth seeing for the opulence and wealth that is the Catholic Church. I guess this is their flagship location, so it is maybe a good reflection of the wealth involved. It is beautiful though and amazing craftsmanship and designs. The popes tombs were very interesting too, never seen this before. Amazing history too, to think there have been that many popes!! If you are in rome, it is worth seeing!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMMENDED! It is the most important basilica of Christianity in the world. It is simply majestic inside and out, with historical artifacts, statues and other beautiful works of art. No matter your religion, visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and learning about its impressive history is 100% worth it.

This basilica is remarkable. The craftsmanship of the sculptors & artists who created it is simply legendary. Their attention to detail is second to none with symmetry everywhere. You are able to climb or take an elevator to the top to see an unmatched view of Rome. We also just so happened to be lucky enough to see the Pope while we were in town and in the Vatican - this is the second time I see the pope and I have only been to Rome twice in my life. Currently 2 for 2! Anyways I highly recommend you come check out the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica!

Beautiful, stunning, and definitely a must visit when in Vatican City! I was shocked at just how beautiful every inch of the basilica was. You know how when you visit several cathedrals, churches, basilicas, so on, they all somewhat seem the same (sorry, but it’s true)? Well, St Peter’s Basilica is about 10 of those in one location showing you how grand they can be. Breathtaking.

A must see. Architectural and artistic marvel. The scale is immense. The artworks and decor are awe inspiring. Several hours are needed for a thorough experience. A digital or online guide is recommended if you are interested in art or history. The Basilica is open every day free of charge which is especially nice and helpful to plan around other activities which require reservations. Highly recommended.

St Peters Basilica is the Renaissance style church located in Vatican City. It is one of the top attractions in your Rome or Vatican City trip. Every Sunday POPE comes to the balcony to wave the peoples gather in the square. The inside is really beautiful, we were amazed. You can spend hours and still you will not feel satisfied. We went on Sunday and it was quite crowded. Tourists are allowed to go to the dome which has 520+ steps. 200+ steps can be climbed by lift and rest has to go by walk. If you use lift it cost 10 euro or else 8 euro. It is worth to go to the top at any cost because you get your dream views. We used that opportunity on a Sunday afternoon to experience this panoramic. We used the lift option which looks more reasonable. Return way from dome takes you to inside of the church.

Beautiful church!!!! ⛪️ Arrive hours in advance and in the morning, it’s VERY HOT there!! Beat the heat and the crowds. Here are some amazing photos we captured. We also the preserved bodies of some of the popes / saints. Really amazing place, so much history to learn, I recommend taking a tour and you will learn way more than just going to visit.

Without a doubt, if you can see the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilicata (which you easily can in one day), then DO NOT miss this. Going to the top of the cupola or dome is very difficult. We took the elevator and it only takes you to the roof. From there you get out, make your way to some stairs near the dome and you don't stop climbing the 331 (w/elevator) or 551 (without) stairs for 15-20 minutes or longer. They also start to curve and get very, very narrow the closer you get to the top. I literally thought my heart was going to pound right out of my chest. The views once you get up there are great, but I'm not so sure its worth the climb. It is definitely not for physically disabled people or bigger people. I'm a fairly big guy and my shoulders were starting to get squeezed a bit. I would just go to the Basilica and amazed at the immense size of the inside. The beauty is beyond compare. That is not an exaggeration. I've never seen its equal and I've been to many, many places of worship. Gets my highest possible recommendation.

This is probably the most ornate, glamorous, and awe-striking church in the world. The grandeur and absolute luxury of the building is striking. It made me feel very small to stand beside the statues that are so much larger than life. It is staggering to think the amount of effort that went into constructing this church. the courtyard was also very beautiful and enjoyable to experience. This is definitely a place to see when you’re in Rome.

Wow. What an experience. The entry is free, and the best time to get in line is 9-11 a.m. wait is worthwhile, and lines move fast. Can bring water and backpacks. Cathedral is a work of art and breathtaking. Artwork at every step. Great gift shop. We spent an easily 4 hours with still more to see. This is a must see-do experience

Truly incredible church which really takes your breath away when you enter. You can visit the tombs of past popes in the crypt and the top of the cupola for views across Rome, but beware, if you take the lift to the top, there are 330 steps to the viewing balcony. Arrive early to avoid long queues at security and make sure your arms and knees are covered out of respect, or you won't be allowed in.

Absolutely fantastic experience at the dome. The architecture is simply incredible. If you've got one day for the Vatican city, do not - and I repeat - do not buy a ticket, but just see the free parts. There's already too much to see in the Vatican if you are buying the Sistine Capel and Vatican museum ticket. Just go inside this dome and enjoy the pretty statues. It's highly advisable to use the free Rick Steve's guide to Europe. It's free and will guide you through everything here.

Very special and peaceful energy in this place. Beside the astonishing beauty and size. There a special peaceful and calmed energy inside the basilica. Everything is nice and balanced. The pieces of art and sculptures inside are breath taking (one of the most Impressive ones is “Piedad of Michelangelo”. The entry is free, but sometimes the cue is very long. We where there on a Sunday morning (around 10 and we got in fast (in like 15 minutes)).

Incredibly beautiful heart of the Christian world. So much to see. You can even see the burial place of many of the old Popes, must keep quiet due to it being a sacred place. You can also climb the dome of the basilica for only €8, or skip some of the steps with a lift for an extra €2. The queue for security is quite long depending on the time of day however for the most part it actually moves really quickly.

Must-see! Incredible! Beyond expectations! Don’t forget to see the spectacular marble sculpture of Jesus and Mary made by Michelangelo in there. Also, if you would like to visit Sistine chapel, don’t go late since it is a long walk to get to the chapel and also it closes early.

An absolute must to visit. Every part of the basilica is breathtaking. Beautiful walls, ceilings, floors and ecclesiastical Catholic attributes. A steep climb leads to the most beautiful panoramic view of Rome. Fortunately, there is also an elevator available that avoids a large part of the stairs. Tip: buy tickets online (climb of the dome are separate tickets) to avoid standing in a long queue and wear appropriate clothing. If you do not do this, you will be refused.

St. Peter's Basilica St Peter’s Basilica, located in the Vatican City, is considered one of the Catholic Church’s holiest temples and an important pilgrimage site. St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest temples for Christendom and one of the largest churches in the world. Besides, it is where the Pope presides many liturgies all year round. The construction of the new basilica began in 1506, when the old basilica had been torn down, and was finished in 1626. It was consecrated on 18 November, 1626. Several renowned architects designed the temple, highlighting the works of Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno. The basilica was called St Peter’s after one of Jesus’s twelve disciples known as Saint Peter, who became one of the founders of the Catholic Church and was executed in Rome and buried where the Basilica now stands. Inside the Basilica St Peter’s Basilica can accomodate 20,000 people. It measures 190 m (624 ft) long and the central nave is 46 m (150 ft) tall. The dome stands 136 m (447ft) tall. Inside, visitors will find extremely impressive pieces of art, including St. Peter’s Baldachin, a large bronze baldachin designed by Bernini, The Pietà, a sculpture by Michelangelo and the statue of St Peter on his throne. St Peter has his right foot worn down due to the touches of the devoted. The Dome One of the most impressive parts of the Basilica is its incredible dome. Its design was started by Michelangelo and continued by Giacomo Della Porta. Carlo Maderno finished the dome in 1614. This dome has served as inspiration for many other cathedrals and buildings, for example, the Capitol in Washington and St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Visiting St Peter’s Basilica Visiting St Peter’s Basilica is an unforgettable experience when staying in Rome. Visitors mustn’t miss out on climbing to the top of the dome, where a stunning view of St Peter’s Square, and if the day is clear of most of the city, awaits them. Climbing to the top might prove to be a little oppressive for some, as the last part of the ascent is a narrow and steep spiral staircase. Taking a Tour If you want to visit the Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with a local guide and skipping lines that can sometimes last 4 hours - we recommend reserving a guided tour of the Vatican. You'll see all the essential sights, and save time which you can use to enjoy the city. Location Piazza San Pietro. Vatican City. Schedule October – March: 7am - 6:30pm April – September: 7am – 7pm The dome opens at 8am and closes one hour before the Basilica. Price The entrance to the Basilica is free. Climbing to the top of the Dome: Lift to the terrace plus 320 steps: € 8 (US$ 9.80) Climbing 551 steps by foot: € 6 (US$ 7.40) St. Peter's Basilica Tickets: Skip the line + Audioguide € 19.5 Transport Metro station: Ottaviano, line A (red) Nearby places Sistine Chapel (95 m) Vatican City (201 m) St. Peter's Square (205 m) Vatican Museums (521 m) Castel Sant'Angelo (970 m)

I only had a short time to visit St. Peter's Basilica, but it was well worth it. The line up in the early afternoon was very long, so I waited until about 4:30pm when it was quite a bit shorter. It still took about 20 minutes to get through security. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to take my smaller backpack in but there was no problem. I have been to many cathedrals, but the sheer size of St. Peter is hard to express in words or even pictures. It's too much to take in and I would have like to have gone a second time to go through in detail. Keep in mind this is just the cathedral itself, not the rest of the grounds and museum. While not planned, I was fortunate that there was a 5:00pm mass happening while going through. I say fortunate because during the mass they have singing and playing of the pipe organ. Hearing the pipe organ reverberate through this immense cathedral is an emotional and amazing experience. I would strongly recommend if you can visit while mass is happening to do so.

Went in via a side entrance after Sistine chapel tour, that skipped the security lines that stretch a good length. To go to the top, you have to buy a ticket (8 Euros for the lift is not bad considering it’s 100 steps and 5-6 Euros). You can attend mass if you arrive at the right time. The shrine to St Peter is special. You can see the chains that shackled him before his execution. Not sure about tombs of past Popes. The basilica is huge. The frescoes and art work surrounding are impressive. Chapel to the side with works by Bernini is only for prayer but I think most pop in for a look. It’s nothing wow. Better to really whisper a prayer there as it is nice and quiet. Buy souvenirs from a side alcove. Everyone goes to the main one but miss the smaller one just to the right before the larger ones. It sells the same stuff. Ask for holy water to be placed in bottles purchased, from another alcove near the small shop. Sometimes there’s a priest who will also bless some of the items purchased like rosary or medals.

We can call St. Peter's Basilica as the most important Catholic House of Worship in the world. Just as the Kaaba is important for Muslims, St. Peter's Basilica is of similar importance to Christians. The only difference is that in addition to its religious importance, this place is also interesting in terms of art and tourism. The basilica, one of the 12 apostles of Christ and built on the tomb of St. Peter's (or at least the tomb of the person thought to be St. It is also one of the most important stops of travel. Being the largest church in the world in terms of its area of coverage, St. In addition to being a religious building, Peter’s Basilica is an exquisite example of Renaissance architecture and perhaps the most expensive artworks in the world. Located in the heart of the Vatican, in St. Peter's Square (St. Peter's Square or St. Peter's Square), St. Peter's Basilica is an important and striking structure with its interior, exterior, underground part, in short, with every centimeter.

Perfect time to visit at the moment. It only took 5 minutes to get in and the place was very empty. It is absolutely beautiful inside, everybody who is in Rome should definitely come to see this. It's also free! It has been one of the many highlights on this trip which also includes the Vatican museum and colosseum, all of which are much less crowded at the moment. Michelangelo's Pieta is particularly beautiful.

We were really impressed by the beauty of the basilica. At times of Covid, there are no queues to get inside. Inside you have plenty of space to assure social distancing. A face mask is mandatory inside the entire building. A view on the Dutch Wikipedia page helped us to get an insight into all the statues and chapels. There are several masses throughout the day, which you can attend freely. Appropriate attire is not that strict anymore, you can wear a short or skirt as long as you cover your shoulders.

The largest church in the world is also the most magnificent. While it took 120 years to construct, it is difficult to fathom how this was built with hand tools. Be sure not to miss the following unmissable monuments inside this incredible Basilica: Michelangelo’s Pietà, St. Peter's' Grave, Bernini's Canopy, Monument to Pope Alexander VII, Statue of Saint Peter and the Dome.

Absolutely stunning! No trip to Rome is complete without going to Vatican City and seeing St. Peter’s Basilica. The entrance to the lower level is free and to go to the dome I believe it cost 12€. I only did the main level. You have to pass through a security check point where you need to walk through a metal detector and have your bags searched. I’m not sure if larger bags are allowed. I had a small purse and water bottle and it was no problem. Bucket list worthy spot!

Amazing beauty! 💙 And add to your must-see list in Rome – climbing to the very top of the basilica. For 10 EUR half of the way you will go up by the elevator and another half by stairs in a very narrow hall. So, be ready for a sport activity, but it’s worth it. The view from the top is unbelievable! Then after climbing you just enter the basilica. Truly exciting experience. Right now it’s the best time to visit basilica, as there are not so many tourists and no queues. 🌱 Come!!

Another fantastic & breathtaking place to visit. The scale & grandeur of this building is something that needs to be seen to be believed. It is free to enter, but make sure you get there for before 9am, as you can walk straight in. From 11am the queue - even with a number of baggage scanners working - would mean at least 2-3hr queue in 25-30 degree heat.

It is a church very very worth visiting. Once you go inside, you will feel that all the waiting is worth it! It is recommended that if there are several people traveling together, don’t rush to take pictures, it is best to arrange for your companions to line up first. And don’t give up visiting because of the queue that is 500 to 600 meters long waiting for security check.

Great place to visit. Pope Francis came exactly at 12pm and blessed the congregation. Visited Sistine chapel and museum on last Sunday of the month, which is free. Pay extra for climbing Dome of the basilica which has amazing views of the Vatican.

St. Peter's Basilica is a stunning testament to the architectural and artistic prowess of our ancestors. Upon entering this breathtaking edifice, I found myself in a state of awe as my gaze swept across the intricate designs and majestic grandeur that adorned every corner. The painstaking detail and craftsmanship that went into creating this magnificent structure left my mouth agape in sheer wonder. The contrast between the awe-inspiring beauty of St. Peter's Basilica and the architectural designs of our modern era is staggering. The artistry and innovation displayed by our forebears are truly unparalleled, and it's humbling to witness the sheer magnitude of their creative vision. Standing in the presence of such timeless beauty, I couldn't help but marvel at the skill and dedication of those who brought this awe-inspiring masterpiece to life. St. Peter's Basilica is a living testament to the enduring legacy of human creativity and serves as a poignant reminder of the inimitable genius of our ancestors.

There is nothing that someone can say to decribe the beauty and the magnificence of this basilica! You need to come and see by yourself! I wonder how they managed to build such a beautiful building and made all this art inside! I hope I will go again and admire this basilica!

(Translated by Google) Not many people. The basilica is impressively large and its majesty is worthy of a king like God and of a people of kings such as the Catholic Church. The exteriority must be a reflection of the interiority of the Christian. Do not forget to greet the Apostle Peter and rub his foot at the end of his pilgrimage. (Original) No había mucha gente.

So much history that you must buy yourself a guide and book before coming here.Thousands of statues,Renaissance frescoes in the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s painting on its ceiling. Be careful though. You cannot talk, or click pics. Also remember if you are going in the summer, they will not let you enter if you are in shorts or skirt or if your shoulders are exposed.... yeah !!

The Basilica of S.Peter doesn't need too many words ,all the world know about its magnificent beauty. That for ,it is even more difficult to understand why there must be that horrid post office vehicle always parked in front of the Colonnato del Bernini, which is one of the wonders of the planet. It is a desrispectful and ugly choice, only people without culture and taste can approve.

Icon of the catholic church, Basilica St Peter is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. Located in Vatican City is easy accessible from Rome. Usually you will have to wait in the line for around 20 minutes to get in.

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of my favorite buildings in the world. It is a huge building that took 120 years to build. I strongly recommend going to the Dome (Cupola), which is designed my Michelangelo. The Dome is inspired by Pantheon, but of course, without the oculus. All of the “paintings” inside the basilica are actually mosaics. St. Peter’s Basilica is also home to Michelangelo’s Pietà.

There is so much to take in here. The area is massive and can be very overwhelming due to the amount of people here. Fortunately, the sites and buildings themselves are so rich and full of history that it melts that anxiety away. Take the time to tour inside. Going through with a guide is a little long, so be prepared to spend hours inside if you go with that option. Cheers!

Best Basilica in the world. Must visit in Rome. We were fortunate to visit on a Sunday noon and see the Pope live and hear his message. For the service, you need to get the free tickets in advance. Visit to the Basilica itself is free. Just that you may end up in a long line.

Incredible basilica with immense detail. Worth visiting whether you are religious or not. Would recommend getting a tour guide because otherwise you will not be able to appreciate the level of detail and thought that went into the construction of the basilica. Going up to the dome is also nice but can be quite a climb.

Beautiful place. Definitely a must see while in Rome/Vatican. The wait is however, quite long. Definitely bring a scarf or something to cover up if coming with strappy tank tops/dresses. It's easy to forget it because it is usually really hot/warm in Rome. It was impressive to see inside, however all this gold and wealth kinda left a bland taste in my opinion. It was definitely more about the gold and wealth, than religion or faith. However, I'm glad I've seen it.

Definitely worth a visit. Come here earlier in the morning as it's really getting crowded during the day, lesser people and you can get proper photos and videos. No entrance fee but if you want to go up to the dome and the overlooking which is for me is a much recommended, you have to pay extra(either by steps or using the escalator).

This is such a beautiful church!! We listened to a Rick Steves audio guide as we walked through which was very helpful to grasp some of the major/significant components. Even if you are not religious, it is impossible not to be awed by the grandiose of this structure. Pictures do not do it justice. This is separate from the Vatican museum, but right next door. A perk of doing a guided tour of the Vatican museums/Sistine Chapel was that we got to leave through a special exit, and were able to walk right into St. Peter's. We spent about an hour here.

The size of St. Peter's Basilica is the first thing you will notice when you walk inside this architectural wonder. It reminds how small we really are. Entry to Saint Peter's basilica is free. If you want to climb the dome, the entrance to St. Peter's dome is to the right of the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica. It costs 8 Euros to climb via the stairs (about 200 steps), and 10 Euros to take the lift (to the 1st level), and wind up on the inside of Michelangelo's dome. Here you can look down on the inside of St. Peter's Basilica from above. As for the second part climbing to the dome, there are another 300 steps to the top. This part could be a bit claustrophobic for some and there is no lift option. It's a narrow single-file staircase climb that slowly spirals up, with the roof sort of slanting in towards you as you go. But the view is well worth the effort. Sad to see some people continue to leave their marks on the wall though. If you do not plan to visit the Vatican Museums, and will only visit St. Peter's Basilica, you should visit the dome before the basilica because you come into the basilica when you exit the dome. Enjoy your visit! (July 2022)

Just wow. Beautiful outside and more beautiful inside. Magnificent place. They said it is the biggest chapel in the world. Line is big, there are no tickets. It took us 45 min just in line, but it must be seen inside. Take care to dress properly, as in many churches and monastery’s, there is a dress code, you can’t wear something short or with shoulder uncovered. If you don’t have it, they will give you something to cover on the entrance. You can also buy holly water inside in souvenir shop.

Make sure when you are in Rome you have time to go to Vatican and visit Saint Peter’s Basilica! I was at the Vatican museum and went to St. Peter’s Basilica after. I would say that this is one of the most beautiful church I have ever seen the interior is breathtaking. It is a truly masterpiece architecture!! And don’t forget to look for Pieta by Michelangelo

Very beautiful place in Rome. You will need an entire day to absorb the beauty of art.The artworks and decor are alluring. Several hours are needed for a thorough experience. The Basilica is open every day and included in you ticket which is nice. I only had a short time to visit St. Peter's Basilica, but it was well worth it. The line up in the early afternoon was very long but we booked ticket from getyouguide so we got express entry to it. I have been to many cathedrals, but the sheer size of St. Peter is hard to express in words or even pictures. It's too much to take in. You can see 3D painting and art work. It is hard to believe all this artist are way ahead of my generation. Highly recommend to this place.

Gorgeous! You don’t have to buy tickets to see the Basilica however if you want to see the museum or the Sistine Chappel then you have to buy tickets. Please book them in advance. You almost never succeed getting tickets for the same day unless it’s with private tours. These private tours can cost you 3 times more than the official tickets themselves. Be careful and don’t get scammed by them.

  • 5/5 Mario Acuña A. 5 months ago on Google
Beautiful place to visit! You’ll have to make a line to enter but it moves fast and it’s free. Once you are inside you can go up paying about €6 or you can pay to enter the museum that guides you down the Basilica (Highly recommended). If you notice any priest you can go and ask for their blessing.

It's absolutely stunning. I paid the 8 euros and walked all the way to the top, and the views are well worth it. Arrive early, though, if you want to beat the cues.
