Asmara is an Eritrean restaurant in Karen, on the right hand side of you're heading towards Ngong. It was my first time there so I was struck by the lovely grounds upon entering the venue. I was there for a pop up market, so it was not just a usual Saturday. They have an extensive Eritrean food menu, which sounds exactly like Ethiopian to me, as well as great drink options. They also have a playground with a bouncing castle, in case you attend with kids. Their food was really tasty too.

Great gardens, quiet during the week so nice for peace of mind during these covid times. Have a varied menu so can accommodate those who are not up for Enjera and the other spicy food.

Had an experience. Im a foodie and here got a real portion of Injera. Tasted the coffee but twas bitter herbs for me. The environment is great, can sit there long hours. The stuff were helpful. Wild life at easy sight.. some monkeys there visiting people eating on some tables though ...

I have been here thrice and I have loved the place and the service on both occasions. First, the place is easy to get to, especially when there is no traffic. The entrance is a bit hidden but there is a sign board to show the entrance. One needs to be a bit keen before getting to the Karen roundabout if you are coming from Ngong or immediately after the roundabout on your way to Ngong. The environment is very cool. Very peaceful, with birds chirping all over. It can get bit chilly at night though. However, they provide some portable furnaces/ fireplace to keep you warm in case you need. Mostly, I go here for the food! The Eritrean cuisine is very delicious, and Asmara makes its so well. I took my family here for my birthday to try new cuisines and they really loved it. Their staff is also very friendly and helpful and kind.

The ambiance was great. Got service from a lovely gentleman called Mwangi. We were having Sunday lunch. Really helpful in choosing meals and they have a variety in the menu not limited to Eritrean cuisine.

The food was good .. loved it. The do really well with Ethiopian cuisine. I do recommend the place. Try the tibs, grilled chicken and mixed platters. Impressive. However the wings were ridiculously small in size. Avoid those πŸ˜‚. The service could be better too - abit slow. It would also help if groups got split bills.

Asmara Karen, aptly named after Eritrea's capital, is one of a chain of restaurants from that region gaining a foothold here in Nairobi. Like most international eateries, Asmara serves an afro-contemporary Eritrean and continental cuisine which means you are free to deviate from a few cultural nuances, like adding some french fries next to your tibs, or doro wat. Eritreans and Ethiopians share many traits in their culture. Consequently, most of the food traditions are similar. Every meal comes with the signature sour white flatbread made from farmented rice called injera. Traditionally teff, which gives the injera its brown appearance, is used instead of rice but that's a story for another day. Both cultures are strong on spices and pepper features dominantly. The mixed dish accompanied with the sizzling tibs ordered this day is a union of flavours from the land of Africa's oldest port city. But the highlight of an Eritrean meal, like in Ethiopia, is the coffee ceremony. Ladies dressed in the flamboyant gabii serve coffee in miniature cups amid a heavy scent of burning frankincense. Highly concentrated, sugarless and without milk, Eritrean coffee is one hair-raising experience you will not forget. Popcorn sometimes is also offered during the ceremony and the entire event is usually on the house. If you are lucky, you might catch the very intense Eskista dance - a vigorous shaking of shoulders and neck that is an amazing sight to watch.

If you like Ethiopia/Eritrea/Somali cuisine this is the place for you. Their injera is amazingβ™₯️ I've eaten a good number of different delicacies here and lemme tell you Maina ,it's lovely and worth the price. Family friendly and you can't catch cold here coz it's cozy.

Terrible customer service. The shades were not working, we had to keep adjusting it for ourselves. Then they started moving us off to the grass because a bigger crowd came. As if us (a family of four) weren’t paying clients. Not coming back and would not recommend.

Very beautiful ambiance and social distancing well observed. On food and customer experience way below average. The beef strips very tough and too salty, kids meals came after the adults were done eating, washrooms very dirty and a not so friendly manager.

Suitable for family outings, small functions and generally just eating out. Food is good, typical Ethiopian/ Eritrean fare, the pizza's are a hit with the kids. The wine per glass, total rip off, better stick to the beers or buy by the bottle. Supervisor and Alex make for good service - should be consistent with the other servers too!

This is the only restaurant which my family visits since it's inception in the early 2000s. I have been to more than 10 countries and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the chilly paneer and turbo naan served here is the best in the world. Mr Bhandari is a classic example for sincerity and perseverance. Building such a brand name not compromising on quality and hygiene is a great thing to be proud of.

Had an amazing time at this restaurant. Were here for a birthday dinner and it turned out to be quite a lovely experience. The service was excellent and we especially enjoyed the attention from the nicest most patient waitress whose name was Susan. We loved loved loved the fish fingers and everything else was great. We were moved to the VIP when it began to rain heavily. Overall a lovely experience.

  • 3/5 mohammed K. 2 years ago on Google
This was my first time trying out Ethiopian cuisine. The food itself at Asmara is pretty good, and I definitely recommend the garlic mushroom starters. But definitely not worth the price that you pay for the main courses; quantity of food is far less than desired, especially the zibzil tibsi (beef with green peppers). If you're going to spend on the higher end, you're by far better off going to CJs or Hashmi's.

Great Ethiopian food the menu is extensive and the food is fresh. As for the ambiance it's rustic with loads of beautiful flowers and shrubs. Very decent place for dining and even working. Will definitely be visiting again. I would recommend the injera platter. The price is also pocket friendly.

I loved the band playing, good ambience, friendly servers, plenty of parking space, and the reservation making was pretty smooth. I had the chicken Shiro and really enjoyed it. My partner's ginger chicken was alright. The tiramisu for dessert was however really runny and I couldn't take beyond one tiny spoonful. They should have allowed guests to opt out of the valentine's menu. All in all I'd go back.

Ethiopian Restaurant in Karen, Nairobi. A bit on the higher side of price but the portions are good and can be shared by 2 people. They have Ethiopian Tea which was a good trial for us. Outdoor sitting that’s great for company retreats or intimate family meal set ups.

Asmara Karen, located after Karen Roundabout on your way to Ngong-Kajiado County. It's on your right side when headed to Ngong and definitely on your left side when from Ngong to Karen. It will take you less than one hour's drive from Nairobi CBD. The restaurant is top-notch with the most professional staff from the guards at the gate to the management. The waiters are well-trained and courteous. They will explain to you every detail about each meal and when the food is ready it will be exactly what they said. The food is yummy and more thus one order will make you full. The environment is charming and neat. Tidiness is their DNA, the soft background music will make you enjoy the place. I enjoyed more the zilizopendwa even though am still young 🀣. What I liked the most is that when you order a meal, you don't have to wait for a longer time, also after eating you will have to request the bill because they don't want to 'chase you away'. I highly recommend ASMARA KAREN.

They have quite friendly service right from the guards to the waiters. Menu is a little limited and portions are not that great. That said, the proprietors even come by to check how you are doing. There's a variety of seating as well as a play area for children. They cater to groups well but there's a bit of a wait after an order (upside is the food comes in fresh and piping hot)

A good relaxing atmosphere ideal for solo, group or corporate hangouts with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating - downstairs or upstairs. Extremely friendly staff providing helpful guidance in seating options, choice of meals including the various combinations. A wide array to choose from between Eritrean and Kenyan dishes.
