If you enter the Summer Garden not from the Neva, but from the embankment. Moika, from the Engineering Castle, you will be greeted right at the entrance by a huge Porphyry Vase. The material for it was pink granite, which is traditionally called p o r f i r o m. The Vase was installed in 1839. This is a gift to Nicholas I from the Swedish King Charles XIV as a sign of goodwill after numerous wars. In January 2008, a crack was discovered on the neck of the Vase with a piece of ice sticking out of it. They even wanted to move it to the halls of the Engineering Castle, and install a copy in the Summer Garden. However, in 2012 (after the reconstruction of the Garden), the restored Porphyry Vase still stood in its historical place, in front of the Carp Pond

A very beautiful vase, a gift to Nicholas I from the Swedish king. Against its background is an equally beautiful pond.

“The Porphyry Vase (another name is the Elfdalen Vase) is a work of stone-cutting art installed in the Summer Garden - a gift to Emperor Nicholas I from the Swedish King Charles XIV as a sign of goodwill after numerous wars between Russia and Sweden. It was made at the Elvdal (Elfdal) royal manufactory in the city of Elvdalen and delivered to St. Petersburg by sea. On the afternoon of January 11, 2008, a crack was noticed on the porphyry vase that came from the neck. There was a piece of ice sticking out from above,” quote.
