It's an impressive monument in Saintes supposedly built around 18 or 19 AD, year of the Roman, according to archive information available. I absolutely adore this monument with its stunning location on the bank of the river Charente in Saintes on the Place Bassompierre square. The inscriptions are worm but you could just make out Germanicus. There were school children here drawing the arch which adds a calming ambience to this monument! One of the best Roman ruins I've seen in France. Great for history buffs but for all ages especially young children!

Free, bold, lit up at night. Flanked by the river, bridges and a place that does frites and green salad, what's not to like!

A beautiful arch close in the middle of town right next to the river.

Beautiful Roman Arch along the river. It’s a pity there’s not more on-site information on display about it’s history.

Just sitting in front of the arch lookingbover the river and its vegetation brought me such peace. Trying to replay history and all the events that took place here. Nothing is more real than that.

Impressive arch and remarkable it was rebuilt in its current location, instead if on the bridge over the river, stone by stone.

We had a fabulous day out in Saintes, the sun shone and it was warm. We had coffee by the river and lunch in the city. A wonderful place full of history and beautiful things.

Beautiful place for photos! We came for the viva saintes festival and the atmosphere so so lovely- if you haven’t been to saintes before I couldn’t recommend it more- the scenery is gorgeous at all times of day. The town feels safe and everyone was so friendly!

Saints is a wonderful city to visit. Gorgeous shopping and sights. Be aware though the restaurants mainly stop serving lunch around 2.30pm
