I did two tours with this company in two days. Both were terrific. Alina has been a tour guide for seven years, yet she remains as enthusiastic as someone just starting. Julian was friendly, knowledgeable, and entertaining. I learned a lot and enjoyed myself on both tours. Highly recommend.

We did “The Story of Bucharest” tour on our first day and Elena was our tour guide. She did such a great job we went back for the “From Monarchy to Communism” tour the next day, also with Elena. Her tours are very interactive and engaging. The two tours cover different places and events and I would highly recommend both tours.

If seeing the Eiffel tower is a must in Paris then doing this tour is a must of little Paris (Bucharest). During the two hour tour with Elena we learned so much about Romanian history and culture, yet her sense of humour made it super fun and digestible. Highly recommend this tour as it is one of the best I have ever been on.

Julian (Alex #2) was fantastic in his knowledge and experience of Bucharest and it's history (see bucharestnotbudapest.com). Such a great experience seeing the sights in Old Town and getting local tips on the outer skirts of Bucharest. Thank you so much Julien, what a great day! Thanks so much for making our trip to Bucharest so memorable!

Amazing experience with great tour guides. There is no better way to experience a new city then by going on one of these tours. A must for any backpackers or other travelers wanting to get a first hand account of the city. I loved hearing our guide's stories of growing up during the changing regimes in the 1990s!

I did the "From Monarchy to Communism" walking tour with Alina as the guide. It was incredible. I learned so much about Romania and Bucharest, and its extensive history and enriched culture. The tour made me became fascinated in learning more about Romania. Alina was a wonderful guide, who really kept us entertained all the while learning. She had so many stories to tell, so many answers to questions. She was very passionate about Romania. Time really flew for me. I strongly recommend doing tours with Walkabout!

I had a short layover in Romania and wanted to for my first visit to get an overview of the city. The tour covered the main highlights of the city and it’s history, from the medieval era, through to communism and up to modern times. Alia was a friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining guide. She made an effort to speak personally to everyone on the tour and encouraged our engagement with traditional Eugenia biscuits “prizes”. She also recommended traditional foods and drinks that we should try. I am a bit of an information geek so it was so much more of a richer and interesting experience for me to understand the history of the places we visited. I highly recommend this walking tour and a special thank you to Alia who has piqued my interest enough to return and experience more.

Did the Bucharest highlight tours with Maria today and it was a wonderful way to get to know the city and it's people. Lots of interesting trivia and her style was engaging. Would highly recommend to give it a shot as a first introduction to the city of Bucharest. She covered many aspects of life and history including communism, churches, buildings, food and drink, currency etc

The tour with Elena was simply the best tour of my life. As a puppeteer she knows how to entertain the audience like no one else. So much so that we ended the tour with emotional applause. The tour is excellent both for those looking for historical information and for those looking for a stand-up comedy. Impossible to regret! Elena, in 2033 I'll be back!

The free walking tour was guided by Maria. She was very knowledgeable about the city, was very friendly and had a couple of good jokes. The atmosphere was great, the tour was 2.5 hours which was exactly good to see a lot of interesting highlights and I learned a lot. Certainly can recommend this tour! It was wonderful. I especially liked the microphone to amplify her voice even louder and the wonderful pictures which clarified some comments and gave more insights. Definitely the best walking tour I've had compared to Skopje and Sofia right now.

We had our tour with the guide Mihaela who was fantastic! Her knowledge of Romanian history and the way she explained things were remarkable. It was really cool to hear things from a local point of view, who experience the historic periods she was telling us about. Also she was very friendly and sweet, you won't regret having your tour with her!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go on a walking tour of Bucharest with the most wonderful guide ever: Elena. We have walked a lot, she perfectly told us the history of Bucharest from the very beginning to the last days of Ceausescu. I really liked this tour because it was super interactive; Elena is able to perfectly transmit tourists all her passion for Bucharest and mix it with her life experience. I definitely recommend to book a tour and I wish you’ll have the chance to discover Bucharest with Elena. Thanks for everything. A big hug from Italy.

Mara gave a great walking tour. Informative and good proficiency in spoken English. Produced relevant and interesting large photos from her bag many times, to explain a point. Good sense of humour. Very worthwhile 2.5 hours. Heads up: The Palace of the Parliament tour must be booked a day ahead, by phone.

Great, wonderful ..a lively and interesting way to spend three hours in Bucharest. You'll leave smiling and knowing more that when you came. This tour is educational informative and amusing. Michaela who ran the tour I was on was an absolute star bar who left me in parts feeling sad, uplifted and inspired by the events of the times, and her personal history of living life in the old days of Bucharest ..

  • 5/5 Tamar N. 4 years ago on Google
The tour was very enjoyably. Alex our guide was very knowledgeable, funny and interesting - not a dull moment in three hours. His English his excellent and obviously the tour was planned carefully to allow for many sitting periods so it wouldn't feel too hard. Learners a lot about Romania and Bucharest.

  • 5/5 The Five Star N. 4 years ago on Google
Having searched for this, in order to rate, I’m actually stunned it could be anything less than five stars! Who rates a free walking tour less than excellent? Especially one where the guides are incredibly knowledgeable, bring props and photos to illustrate their points, answer questions that you didn’t know you were allowed to ask about a place and do it all for free?! Having done both the morning tour on the history of Bucharest and the evening tour on the Royal history, I can safely say they are both fantastic. I shamefully knew nothing of Romanian history until taking these tours and spent most of them picking my jaw from the floor. What an incredible story. What a people. What a tour.

The best tour I’ve done, amongst all the ones I did in Europe, and I did many. CATALINA (our guide)...you have been great! I’m not normally the person who is passionate in history, but how you explained us the events, how they were intimate and really felt by you...this made everything so fascinating and sticking to my memory. And I cannot stress this enough. She was authentic, not interpreting any part but being sincerely taken by what she was doing and managed to keep the group altogether even in the big cold, windy, snowy weather of that day :)

(Translated by Google) I just participated in the tour of historical Bucharest and it proved to be a very pleasant activity. This tour allows you to have a general smattering of the history of Bucharest passing in front of the most significant buildings in the center. It is logical that if you want to visit one of these entirely, you should go back on your own, but to be a free tour it is organized very well. In addition, Alina, our guide, is very nice, kind and helpful. What more do you want from a free walking tour? ;-)

My boyfriend and I went on this tour this week and we absolutely loved it. Elena was amazing and she had great sense of humor. I loved that she quizzed us, asked many questions, made connection with everyone in the group. Along the tour, we had to buy something from a store and got separated from the group. Elena went above and beyond to ensure we found them, she went back to the store to look for us and luckily we remembered that the end stop is at University plaza, which is where we reunited. Elena walked back with us to fill us in on what we’ve missed. We could tell she really cared for tourists and very proud to show the beauty of Bucharest. There are three reasons she volunteers for these tours: a) encourage people to meet each other, b) share the beautiful history of Bucharest, and lastly, c) to encourage tourists to return to the city :) She has great tips on what to eat, where to go, and what are must do’s. Make sure to tip well as all the guides are volunteers. Multumesc, Elena :) P.S. the last photo was taken from their FB page. Vlad & Alta

We had the luck of having Mara just for ourselves. Even though it was a cold winter day, her warmth personality and passion for the history of her city (and a little mulled wine break), kept us interested and going for 2 hours through the old town. She even showed us a very nice bar at the end where we ended having a fun karaoke night. She even went beyond helping me with a problem l had later on my trip. We definitely recommend this tour. If you do it during winter, use cozy and very warm clothes.

The "From Monarchy to Communism" walking tour is a great experience! Our guide Elena was brilliant! Humorous, informative, friendly, inclusive, and knowledgeable, she gave us a lively glimpse of the culture of Romanian people. The facts and information shared were relevant and interesting, and provided me with an appreciation for the city, how the history has shaped the present, and those sites I may not even have noticed walking by. I've been on many walking tours and this is definitely one of my favourites, enjoyable and I learned a lot. A really valuable experience, highly recommended.

An interesting experience as I had the chance to learn more about Bucharest. A point to improve would be to try and make it more interactive because at certain points, all the participants had to stand and listen to the tour guide for quite some time. Having said that, it was truly enjoyable walking around the city and getting to know more about important people & sights.

  • 5/5 Charles J. 1 year ago on Google
Alina was a FIVE STAR tour guide. I HIGHLY recommend this tour and please remember to tip. She really was so knowledgeable and real. Very transparent about both her parents’ experience in Communist Romania and the transition toward democracy during her life with realty-based stories of both her own and the people of Romania. Despite the rain, she never missed a beat. She was extremely diligent and helpful regarding everything from a tourist finding somewhere for his bag to accommodating guests for coffee and locating a restroom. This tour is a gem in Bucharest. A walking tour like this would easily be $20 or $30 in any other European city. I learned more from this tour guide than any other part of my stay. She also recommended the Christmas market which just opened as well as the village museum at which I had a wonderful time after the tour. Thank you, Bucharest! And a special thank you to Alina.

Julian was our guide. A thoroughly informative and personal history of Bucharest complete with visuals at each stop. Loved every minute of the tour. Although it is “free” you will want to give the guide a generous tip.

The tour is a short distance and yet covering a lot with the help of pictures and storys. Most importantly though, it‘s all about the individual guide: Elena is fully awake, engaging, witty, playful, authentic, very knowledgable, answering all questions, critical about Romanias history and development and ending on a positive note of hope: the changing Power of the people

We took a tour with Elena on our first night in Bucharest and it set the tone for the rest of our time in the city. Her stories of the city and country which she grew up in and is passionate about, left us with a deeper understanding of Bucharest than any guidebook or blog could ever provide. Her humour left us smiling but she left us under no illusions as to the realities of the past that have shaped the city into what it is today. The tips and recommendations which she offered have all been great - I would 100% recommend the fountain show and the tour of the presidential palace. Thank you Elena :-)

Tudor was our guide, he was just absolutely excellent. His extensive experience as a guide was obvious. He had worked for years also as a guide in the palace parliament. He knew the history of everything we asked about. He also had plenty of fun and interesting facts about Bucharest and Romania. A really nice and friendly guy who stopped for coffee and toilet breaks to help us fully enjoy the tour. An absolute fantastic way to start your visit to Bucharest to get an understanding of the history, politics and culture of Bucharest and Romania. Thanks so much.

This really was the best guided tour we have ever had, thanks to Elena our guide. Elena's presentation of the fascinating history of Romania and Bucharest was superb, entertaining and easy to absorb. Having had a wonderful couple of hours, we came away with an appreciation of the story of Romania past and present, with insights into the social and architectural landscapes of Bucharest, and an appreciation of the wit and humour of the Romanian people. Elena is a very engaging and attentive guide and a great ambassador for Romania and for Bucharest. Highly recommended.

It's a well organized three-hour tour worth the time and money spend. Credits to the tour guide Alex who keeps the visitors' interest alive throughout the tour with his humor and willingness to answer all the questions!

😠 I'm off to New Year's Circuit Bosnia Croatia. My room is very stuffy, there is no hot water, I saw all the sights at night, the unprepared guide reads from the sheets on the bus and with an arrogant attitude. To stay all day in the bus for 1 hour of visit, this cannot be called a circuit. Avoid this...

👍👍 Our trip to Rhodes has been well planned by the Cocktail Holidays agency. The transportation from/to the airport was on point, never late and we also received a list with optional experiences, such as a city tour, boat trip, etc.
