Great building here that is used for concert halls. Only 10 lei to take a self guided tour and its worth it. Lot of beautiful architecture here and some nice art pieces. Read up in the history of the building as well. You only need about 30 to 45 minutes to see the place so stop in when in the area.

Must to visit. You may not have to attend a concert but pay 10 RON to view empty hall during the day time. Cash only. Worth a visit.

The building is beautiful, but the inside is a gem. Built at the end of the XIX century, it is one of the most beautiful Athenaeums in Europe. Now, you can only go inside paying a fee of 10 lei, that are 2 euros, but you can only pay in cash, as in many other places in Bucharest, even in the XXI century. You can visit the hall in the main floor but also the auditorium as well. And if you are lucky enough as we were, you can see a performance during the rehearsals of the artists.

This is a MUST visit when in Bucharest!! We were lucky enough to get inside, very limited touring hours of 2-4PM (at least the day I went). Breathtaking architecture, stairs, and ceilings. When you walk into the theatre hall area it’s unbelievable. This was one of the top five highlights of our Bucharest trip.

The Romanian Athenaeum is located in the center of Bucharest and nowadays serves as the city's most prestigious concert hall. For a small price of 10lei you can visit the inside of this beautiful building. Once you get in, you will be amazed by the neoclassical style with some rimantic touches. Look up to admire the amazing ceilings, both on the ground floor and on the auditorium above! A wonderful fresco decorates the circular wall of the concert hall. Spare a few minutes to sit in the auditorium and feel the vibe of the place, even if there isn't any concert going on!

By far the most beautiful building I’ve been inside while in Bucharest. I was told the government sold notebooks for the kids to use in school. Supposedly 1 lei of the price of the books went to construction of this theatre. This is my 4th visit and each time the entertainment was different. The piano this evening sounded amazing in the theatre. The detailed mural theat encircles the theatre is an added treat. Each time I’m luck enough to gaze upon it I see something I’ve missed previously. The entry way is my 2nd favorite area with the 4 spiral staircase in the corners. I look forward to my next experience here. Well worth a visit if you have the opportunity.

Easily one of the most beautiful buildings in Bucharest. We got the chance to go inside on a Tuesday evening at 9.30pm and had the place to ourselves. 10 Lei per had is so worth it. You can freely wander around and go into the concert hall. No supervision, just beautiful neoclassical architecture in pristine condition.

Built in 1888, is an inspiring place for all sorts of artists! Highly representative for Romania's History of Art. An painting covers all the circled wall's surface, representing the most relevant scenes of Romania's medieval History. The sound is well distributed despite the unusual form for a concert hall. But most important, the Enescu Philharmonic gives to this hall an terrific quality!! I personally think this is one of the most particularly beautiful Concert hall in Europe! Definitely worthy!

Our experience could not be better. We went to visit this place on a given Sunday. Of course it was close; but one of the keep guards suggested that we could pay ten lei each and then we could get into the building to see it: the result was that we were totally alone in this amazing music house, having the chance to visit the stage. I can confirm the chairs and stands are the same as they had in the 70’s when a friend of mine was playing here. AND in the basement it was playing piano this student that I could not believe how amazing technic and musicality I was listening.

A classic piece of art you cannot miss while in Bucharest. I feel so grateful to have got the chance to witness this extraordinary work of architecture. I was mesmerized by the art and feel in the concert hall. I didn't want to leave the hall :) The entry fee is 10RON per person. Get the ticket from the counter on the right side of the Atheneum (door entry shown in the pics below). You can only takes pics by mobile phones. Nearest metro station Piata Romana.

The architectural jewel of Bucharest. The inside is more impressive than the outside. An ornate, domed, circular neoclassical building with elements of Romanticism with the function of a concert hall. Check to see if there is a performance, as I think you can attend unless you're a fan of the performance.

It's a beautiful interior 😍 The instruments sound excellent, and the round form of the hall gives a great view from every angle. You can buy any category of tickets and it will be good because the hall is not so big and you will enjoy the music from all the seats.

Superb, sophisticated, pretty small inside. Good acoustic, unusual for it's shape. Usually, a good acoustic is obtained in a cube (see the largest operas in Europe), but the Athenaeum can give comparable sounds despite the round shape. Extraordinary music, I could stay for hours inside...i will definitely go back for other classical concerts.

Spectacular and amazing. You can t miss this place when in Bucharest. The overall style is neoclassical, with some more romantic touches. In front of the building there is a small park and a statue of Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. Inside, the ground floor hosts an ornate conference hall as large as the auditorium above; in the auditorium there are 600 seats in the stalls, the rest of the seats being placed in 52 loges. You just need to see it yourself!

It is a must visit place. there is only the entrance and the main room theater room to see, but the theater is wonderfull. A paint of the history of romania is all around the wall, and besides that is has decorations on everything centimeter. We spent about 50 minutes om the room. To enter you need to go on the star of opening hours that you can fins on the website, and enter trought an closed left door on the building. You also need 10 lei in cash for person.

The Romanian Athenaeum is one of the buildings you just have to see if you're in Bucharest. I had the pleasure of attending concerts and recitals there and was wowed by the ornate interiors. I held back on giving a five star rating because, especially for someone as tall as I am, the chairs have no leg room, and some parts of the building could use some restoration.

(Translated by Google) The Romanian Athenaeum was built in the Episcopate Garden, a land that belonged to the Văcăreşti family. Many contemporaries criticized the location ... because the chosen place was considered too far from the city center and very difficult to reach, especially in winter. The state did not have enough central land, should this place "on the outskirts of the city" be chosen? In 1886 the construction of the current building began; part of the funds were raised by public subscription, at the urging Give a lion for the Athenaeum. On the recommendation of the French architect Charles Garnier, the author of the Opéra Garnier in Paris, the building plans were designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, so that the foundation of the riding school started by the "Romanian Equestrian Society" could be used. The building was inaugurated on February 14, 1888. The athenaeum was consolidated, restored and modernized in the period 1994-2004 by the architects Ana Braniște, Raluca Nicoară and Gabriela Mindu together with the engineers Dragoș Badea and Silvia Caraman. It was reopened in 2005, on the occasion of the 17th edition of the George Enescu International Festival.

(Translated by Google) The Romanian Athenaeum is the main concert hall of the city, the venue of the annual international music festival. Since 1889, it has been the main concert venue of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. The building was designed by the French architect Albert Galleron at the expense of the noble Wallachian noble family of Wakarescu and solemnly opened in 1888. Part of the funds for the construction was obtained by open subscription for 28 years, and in Romania they still remember the call: “Donate one leu to the Athenaeum!” After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, on December 29, 1919, the Athenaeum was the venue for a conference of leading Romanian leaders who voted to ratify the treaty of accession of Bessarabia, Transylvania and Bukovina to the Kingdom of Romania, the so-called Greater Romania. The Atheneum building is richly decorated. Domed, round in shape, neoclassical style, with elements of romanticism. In front of the building is a small park with a monument to the Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. Inside, on the ground floor there is a large conference room, above - an auditorium with 600 seats in the stalls and 52 - in the boxes. The interior of the round wall of the concert hall is decorated with a fresco by artist Kostin Petrescu, depicting the most important moments of Romanian history, starting with the conquest of Dacia by the Roman emperor Trajan and ending with the emergence of Great Romania in 1918, divided into 25 plots. Painting works were started in 1933 and solemnly presented to the public on May 26, 1939. In 1935, at the initiative of George Enescu, funds were raised and work began on the construction and installation of a concert organ in the main hall of the Athenaeum. In honor of the completion of the work, a gala concert was given on April 22, 1939, performed by Franz Schütz, director of the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts. In 1992, restoration work was carried out in the amount of 9 million euros, funds for which were allocated in equal shares by the Government of Romania and the Council of the European Development Bank. The Romanian Athenaeum today is a symbol of Romanian culture. In 2007, the building was inscribed on the European Heritage List.

In 1865, cultural and scientific personalities such as Constantin Esarcu, V. A. Urechia, and Nicolae Creţulescu founded the Romanian Atheneum Cultural Society. To serve its purposes, the Romanian Athenaeum, a building dedicated to art and science, would be erected in Bucharest. The building was designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, built on a property that had belonged to the Văcărescu family and inaugurated in 1888, although work continued until 1897. A portion of the construction funds was raised by public subscription in a 28-year-long effort, of which the slogan is still remembered today: "Donate one leu for the Ateneu!" On December 29, 1919, the Atheneum was the site of the conference of leading Romanians who voted to ratify the unification of Bessarabia, Transylvania, and Bukovina with the Romanian Old Kingdom to constitute Greater Romania. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. The nine million Euro required were contributed in equal shares by the government and the

This is the most beautiful building in Bucharest, every day I walk pass this building and never stop amusing me. I am not an architectural expert but this is clearly neoclassical architecture. Roof of this circular dome is eccentric. Frontal site sometimes reminds me of miniature version of bolshoi theatre or Roman Pantheon. Just go there, sit in park, walk around, eat some ice cream but be clean! There are not much of trash can, and ones available are overloaded already. So be nice, if they are full, trash your litter somewhere else.

  • 5/5 Cristiana U. 2 years ago on Google
What an amazing building overall! Situated in the center of the city this concert hall is an important landmark of the Romanian capital. The overall style is my favorite neoclassic and romantic. In front of the building there is a small park and a statue of Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. The ground floor has a conference hall as large as the floor above. In the auditorium there are 600 seats in the stalls and another 52 in loge seating and a huge fresco decorates the inside of the circular wall. The building is an European Heritage site and i do recomend taking some good photos.

So pretty and awesome looking inside. Small performance space but it makes it feel very intimate. Grate vantage points from any seats and a fairly laidback vibe (like you can comfortably fit in wearing jeans). I will absolutely go again just to see the amazing ceiling.

Truly marvellous, from the architecture to the acoustics of the hall itself! A veritable House of Arts, if you may. The atmosphere inside is warm and one feels like transcending into another dimension when inside, listening to the best musicians of the world. Also, a small detail that i absolutely love is that of the murals: a brief romanian history lesson. One can not simply come to Bucharest and not visit this jewel!

I really liked visiting this building. It’s quite exquisite and did only cost 10 LEI or 2 euro. The entrance was hidden around the corner and the person from whom we bought the tickets was very rude (-1 star), which made it a bit awkward, but I am still very happy I did visit this concert hall.

Outside is beautiful! We could hear them practicing opera - just be warned that when there are rehearsals you often can't go inside until later (2pm in my case earlier this week). I missed out as I had a flight to catch but I heard from others its beautiful to see, but better to catch a show if possible. All in all, the building outside was gorgeous.

This place was totally awesome! The entrance is just massive and even the staircases were huge. We enjoyed a piano concert in the auditorium which is pretty modern. Visited yesterday afternoon(12/11/23), paid my entance fee, confirmed photography was allowed, no additional fees to pay, went inside and no sooner had I taken a couple of shots, I was confronted by a member of staff who informed me photography was not permitted! I pointed out that the guy in the ticket office had told me it was OK, and with that the "no photography " order was revised to " 10, maybe 15 shots." No sooner had I settled in and started shooting, I was then confronted by the chap from the ticket office, who told me "No photgraphy!" When I pointed out that other visitors were freely taking photos, he then retorted with " Yes, but you are a professional! " I am not a professional, but decided the better option was to insist on a full refund, which they provided, and I left the building. I guess it depends on the staff working on the day whether you can take any photos, so based on that, I would not recommend. I would rather have a little more certainty as to if I can take photos before visiting. The whole interaction had a sort of pre soviet feel about it, so I guess with some people old habits die hard. I did however come across a cake shop, close by, selling some of the best eclairs I have ever tasted and that is well worth a visit.
