Taxila,
as
a
foremost
exponent
of
the
ancient
Gandhara
civilization,
is
a
must-see.
It
might
not
be
possible
to
finish
off
everything
in
a
single
day,
especially
if
you
are
accompanied
by
young
children.
The
ruins
are
spread
over
a
30-minute
drive
starting
from
the
Museum
(a
must-see)
and
in
two
directions.
Rocky
land
and
hilly
climbs
have
to
be
encountered
on
foot
rendering
it
a
romantic
and
mysterious
sojourn.
Labelling
is
minimal,
both
at
the
museum
and
the
ruins.
Julian
and
Sirkap
are
the
obvious
favourites.
However,
let
me
strongly
recommend
a
visit
to
the
Mohra
Moradu
Buddhist
monastery
situated
in
a
high
valley
at
20-minute
drive
from
Taxila
museum
(just
ahead
of
Sirkap).
It
was
founded
during
the
Kushan
rule
in
the
second
century.
A
narrow
but
drivable
road
leads
to
the
monastery
through
the
Mohra
Moradu
village.
Do
mind
the
sharp
bends
once
you
are
very
close
to
the
destination.
Once
there
you
will
be
close
to
a
huge,
and
a
smaller,
but
better
preserved
stupa.
The
monastery
has
much
to
offer
with
monks’
cells
and
the
rectangular
depression
which
had
water
for
cleaning.
A
stupa
(intriguingly)
and
statues
are
located
inside
the
cells.
