Beautiful remains of an old fortress town with clear Roman, Byzantine and Medieval influences. The rebuild parts give a nice and clear idea to what the fort looked like in Medieval times. The views are amazing too.

A very interesting and beautifully arranged fortress. Entrance costs 6 leva / adult and 4 leva / child. It said something on the website of 10 leva/family, but we didn't bother because we simply thought it wasn't worth it. As strong points: museum, rebuilt a tower, 2 walls built in different periods, the water reserve of the fortress, the highest point. Attention: you can't take pictures in the museum: why? I did not understand. The lady there doesn't speak English at all.

Very interesting place for Bulgarian history. A small museum with a wonderful explanatory "attendant". A walking encyclopedia and ready to answer any questions. A lovingly restored place, very well maintained with a great view over Shumen.

Great fortress, a small renovated museum with a lot of history. There is a great terrace with a view and a coffee machine. Friendly staff. Very quiet and relaxing to linger. It is only partially accessible for strollers, otherwise children can crawl everywhere.

I have no words to describe my visit. An incredible place that must be visited and not only because it is one of the 100 national sites, but also because of the energy it carries. We visited it last weekend and it still has me. And the view from this place is unique. See the Old Town with your own eyes, because in pictures and in words it is not like seeing it. Worth!

Nice fortress. Small interesting museum with artefacts. Could purchase combined ticket for several historical places around.

This old fortress is magnific. It was thoroughly excavated revealing 5 layers of the city lived by this inhabitants :Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, first and second Bulgarian kingdoms. There is a musem with a lot of interesting archeological findings and a very nice and knowledgeable guy. It totally worth to go out of my way to visit this formidable place.

Very interesting historical place. Despite being there several times, now for the first time I also visited the museum within the fortress. Learned a lot of new and interesting facts and saw a lot of rare historical artifacts. Highly recommend the place.

Unexpected journey. At the top there is a museum with a very kind man who can answer all history related questions.

Not the most expensive thing. I recommend it, but if you don't know about Bulgarian history it won't be interesting

Must see place if you are in the Shumen area. I recommend taking the steps instead of driving up and it is so much more rewarding at the top.

Very nice site. Wonderfully placed, with a good view of Shumen and the neighbouring monument. Best to see at sunset 🙂. Make sure you have cash at hand, for the tickets. Easy to reach.

Nice place. Very cheap entrance fee. The nature is amazing u can have a nice walk. We went in August and the weather was so good. I recommend a thin jacket in fact.

If you like to visit historical sites, this is a worth of visit. Not only incredible view but also amazing how they have built it old age. It’s great to have a walk on this place when it’s about to sunset :)

The citadel has been excavated thoroughly and now lots of info is available. The museum shows what was found there. It is impressive to wander around the fortress and see the ruins of different buildings.

Very nice view, can go with a car, but the road is a bit bumpy. Enjoy Bulgaria and Shumen.
