The peristyle court is the reason why Split is famous. A beautifully preserved, ancient hall that’s the undeniable pièce de résistance of the remains of Diocletian’s imperial palace. It is nearly always crowded so do be careful with your valuables. The only restaurant there, Luxor Café, is horribly overpriced but then again, how often will you get to sip coffee or beer on 2000 year old steps taking in the Dalmatian sun? If you get there at sunrise there is a wonderful trick that light and shade plays that you can only see on a sunny morning so the cruise crowds never get to witness it.

One of my favourite places in Split. This is a must-see while your in the city. This picturesque colonnaded ancient Roman peristyle (courtyard) lies at the very heart of Diocletian's Palace. In summer you can almost be guaranteed a pair of strapping local lads dressed as legionaries adding to the scene. Notice the black-granite sphinx sitting between the columns near the cathedral; dating from the 15th century BC, it was one of 12 looted from Egypt when the palace was constructed. This is a great place to walk around and explore or even grab and drink and bite to eat at the restaurant across from it.

Great view. You can see the whole Split in 360 degree view. The sunset from the tower is one of the best i have ever seen in my life. The climbing up the tower is very easy and cheap and in the tunnel is enough space to not get claustrophobia. It is not very crowdy and you can take perfect pictures.

Central square of Diocletian's Palace. The buildings are wonderfully preserved. It's "lived in" though, full of bars, ice-cream parlours, etc. Although a gorgeous place, watch out that it gets jam packed in summer, if you can visit early in the morning before the hordes arrive.

Courtyard is beautiful, though extremely busy during the day. I got up early one morning to take the ferry to hvar and decided to stop in and see what it was like without people around. If you want nice photos, I travelled in peak season and no one was there at 630. Added a video from the day before just after lunch for reference

A very interesting square, a major part of Diocletian's palace. Very well preserved, the different historical layers are clearly visible here. Extremely lively...

Another beautiful place in Split. The visit to the tower of the Cathedral is highly recommended, although you have to take into account the stairs and the height of the steps when deciding to go up. The views are amazing!!!

Peristil is the place of many happenings. Personally, it is one of my favorite places in Diocletian's palace. You don't need to sit and buy the coffee in that cafe in order to be on Peristil and admire the beauty of all buildings. Get a coffee to go and stand, walk around and observe all the details. Jupiter temple is here, St. Domnius cathedral, Vestibul, sphinx and a lot more.

Magnificent former central court yard that was the northern access to the large Diocletian palace. Certainly one of the highlights of the old city but unfortunately very crowded at times. Early in the day or later in the afternoon it tends to get quieter so check again when it was too crowded when you arrived

During my trip, I visited Peristyle twice, one of which was at night and the other one was in dat time. I love the atmosphere here at night, also the sunshine during the day.

Very beautiful landmark that comes alive at night where the bar in the landmark plays music and serves drinks.

There are 3 points of interest in this spot, the cathedral, the bell tower which you can walk up and a small museum behind the ticket desk. The combined ticket is €12 for all 3 and is a bargain. The museum is over 3 levels with a lot of religious artifacts and historical items from the history of the city. The cathedral is an eclectic place showing the history of the many ages of the city, different religious phases and styles. The tower offers the best view of Split from the top, but is a fairly hard climb up a series of very steep stone steps for the first few levels. It is absolutely not accessible in any way, so be forewarned (see video). A fantastic view from the top though! Sadly this doesn’t seem to appear in any of the tour sites of Split, but it’s an overlocked treasure!

Good during the day, great during the night. Live music, spontaneous dancing and singing every night.

Peristil is a beautiful place in the palace. You can enter it many ways. There is a church there too. Its really pretty. You can see in these pictures

The Peristil is one of the most unique town squares in Europe and maybe even the world. It’s a great place to people watch and it’s truly the center of Split, geographically and culturally. If you sit on the red cushions here, you will be served food or drink from the Luxor restaurant. From this spot, you can watch Diocletian address the crowd at 12 pm each day.

Golden location in the center of old city where you have the roman ages meeting the Middle Ages. Outstanding well preserved constructions and excellent restaurants to make your tour perfect. Split is not a one day tour, so take time to explore, even better with a local guide to understand the differences of constructions and arquitecture of different times in history
