Went here last Sunday morning. Beautiful collection and loved the special exhibition on music. Most stunning was the Egyptian exhibition. Loved how the items are displayed per topic with good explanations in different languages. Highly recommended.

The whole upper floor is currently closed for renovations. However, there's no indication of this on the website, nor did the ticket desk staff mention this at all. Of course, they asked for the full price anyway. It appears that some parts will reopen in late March, others in autumn. Would not recommend a visit until late 2020.

Very nice collection of ancient greek and roman art, when I was there the Egyptian collection was featured which was very impressive. 2-3 hrs should be plenty.

The Iberian exhibition is outstanding. It has been very excellently curated and is both informative and entertaining. Using the audio guide, I was indeed able to “immerse myself in the history of the Iberians” as promised and enjoyed seeing the numerous artefacts from many excavations and watching the audiovisual displays.

(Translated by Google) The current special exhibition "Gladiator. The true story "proves that gladiators were not just slaves, but the stars of antiquity. Even an emperor trained as a gladiator! On family Sundays, children can be photographed as gladiators, the bistro offers: K & K = culture meets culinary delights with gladiator-food "Puls", and in the evening there are "spur-battles" = poetry slam. There is also something splendid to see from antiquity: Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian exhibits. On the grounds of the former Domprobstei 1826 a residential building for the former silk ribbon manufacturer Johann Jakob Bachofen-Merian was built. This is where the magnificent Antiken Museum resides in St. Alban-Graben, which inspires me again and again. The visit is worthwhile! ATTENTION: Because in St. Alban-Graben a long needed underground garage for the museums arises, the access is blocked here, also the tram stop "Kunstmuseum" is canceled and relocated to the stop "Bankverein". Next parking garage: In the Migros Drachencenter, but often occupied. Even without a special exhibition, this collection is well worth seeing, integrated is the collection Ludwig. Etruscan art, Egypt, Greece, Rome: comparisons are possible, but also the amazement of so much skill, so great mastery in antiquity! And the human touches our hearts over the ages! Admission with museum pass free. (Original) Die derzeitige Sonderausstellung „Gladiator.

(Translated by Google) Nice museum with everything you need to really get into the current exhibition themes. The atmosphere is nice and the exhibitions are mostly interesting. In my opinion one of the best museums in Basel. The prices are really reasonable. Never had to get excited about anything.

Superb natural history museum in the center of Basel, the ant exhibition alone is worth the entry fee. Don't miss (if that's possible) the woolly mammoth on the third floor. Entry to the museum is free on the first Sunday of every month.

We visited on Basel Museum Night, so there were tons of people out. This museum was fairly crowded, but you could still see the magnificent displays and artwork. I'm planning to return another day for a more leisurely visit.

A good museum in need of more renovations. Downstairs is an excellent space devoted to modern galleries of ancient Egypt and the early Hellenic world (before ca. 1000 BCE). However, the displays of Greek vases on floors 1&2 show their age. Poor lighting, inadequate labelling and lack of logic in the displays do not do justice to a collection of great merit.

Currently the Antique museum is offering an evening with apero, an indepth guided tour by the curator, ending with a delicious dining experience at the end, and a tasty local wine selection. Had enough time to stroll through the rest of the museum afterwards as well. A novel idea, fantastic experience. Best part was the friendly staff, who didn't make me feel like a pain because of dietary restrictions. Thank you!

Free entry during weekends makes this museum a pleasant experience for those traveling with a family or on budget or both 😌 Very nice collection even though it is a small museum compared to its European counterparts.

This museum could be incredible but instead it’s a very frustrating experience, especially for non-English speakers. I don’t expect everyone to cater to English speakers; these problems transcend that. There are many impressive Ancient Greek and Egyptian pieces, but little information about most of them in any language, even less so in English. There is a map that is supposed to highlight some key important pieces and provide additional info, but the map isn’t always correct and the additional information is in German and formatted in a way that makes it difficult to scan with your phone for translation. There are information placards in most rooms, but they are printed on clear plastic, which means there are shadows from the text on the wall immediately behind. This makes it look like more text and so if you take a picture for translation, the translation app is completely confused. Simply using an opaque background would solve this problem without the need for posting an English translation. I just found myself very confused and wanting so much more information as I gazed on the impressive collection. Why were some things in a display case and others out in the open? Were the uncovered pieces replicas? Why are so many pieces from these cultures in Switzerland instead of in their native countries? After a couple of hours in the museum I still have no idea about any of this. Adding insult to injury, a good portion of the museum was closed as of early September 2022.

A surprising museum in the middle of Basel. A large collection of ancient Greek and Egyptian artifacts. Multiple egyptian mummies on display, including mummified animals, which I have never seen before. Some beautiful pottery on display. Limited English translations, which reduces ability to interact for English speaking visitors.

(Translated by Google) In the gladiator exhibition you can learn a lot about the time. I was in a guided tour of this exhibition and it has been noticed that the curator himself has a lot of interest and joy in this topic and therefore the guidance was very exciting and inviting. It's also great that originals are on display, some even from Naples.
