Beautiful ryokan with a number of baths the choose from, in the ladies bath there are three indoor baths, one large open-air rotenburo (stone bath) and another outdoor bath. The service was absolutely fantastic and cannot be faulted in anyway. The dinners and breakfasts were large and delicious! Our room Nigatsu (February) was large and had a wooden bath inside and a small rotenburo outside. It was absolutely lovely staying here during the snow! The ryokan is located for close to the snow fields as well!

This review is for the day trip hot springs, as I didn't stay overnight. The hot springs here are amazing. The view (from the woman's baths) of the snow-covered mountains was spectacular. I absolutely did not want to leave! There are several nice indoor baths as well but I spent most of my time in the outdoor baths. I especially loved the one shaped like an old-fashioned cast iron cooking pot, complete with a decorative wooden "lid". I used an onsen pass for my admission, but I believe the price was 600 yen for adults, a real bargain. They had some fairly nice bath products (shampoo/conditioner/face and hair products) compared to other similar establishments.

I had a terrible stay at the Okada Ryokan. We spent two nights in the Japanese Alps and the comparison between the two ryokan was astonishing. Service was very poor here, with staff never at the front desk, taking minutes to come out after we loudly called out for them multiple times. Food was far lower quality, and MUCH smaller portions, than the pictures on Google, Rakuten Travel, and Booking— mostly unseasoned, little to no prep-work (do they even have a chef anymore?) and most dishes were cold and pre-made, rather then cooked at the inn. Breakfast was even worse than the dinner, and when we finally complained, they told us the meal was small because the management had put us down as a “second consecutive night stay” when it was our first time ever staying there! The bed wasn’t a futon, but instead an eggcarton-style foam pad, windows were uncleaned and had streaks and water stains all over them, and the teapot in the room still had some old tea at the bottom of it. There was even a large spider inside our room! The onsen was hot, but left our skin feeling tingly and dry. At the end, they apologised to us without even making eye contact (just looking at the computer) and refused to offer anything besides their insincere apology.

Unfortunately we got disappointed. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and the Onsen area was great too, but our room was a disaster. Definitely one of the oldest and worn out rooms we've ever slept in, considering the price we paid. The walls were stained, there was a weird, almost smokey smell everywhere and the bathroom looked dirty and moldy. The sleeping mats and pillows couldn't have been harder as well. Despite a great Onsen area, we expected so much more overall from a 4-star hotel.

Friendly and helpful staff, though you may struggle with it at times if you don't speak Japanese. The public onsen here are fantastic, and open overnight until 8:30 am - relaxing under the stars is a great experience. If public onsen is too intimidating, they also have private onsen available for a modest fee, which need to be booked ahead (book at reception, I was able to get a lot of choice booking one day in advance). The room was also very nice, though as with many hotels in Japan, indoor smoking is common, and the room carries a mild smell of cigarettes. As a bonus, the trip through the mountains to get here is very picturesque.

It is a relocated old old house. We ate around the hearth and had a very calm and comfortable time in the private room. The room has an open-air bath, so we could enjoy the bath very easily.

Modern clean hotel with traditional rooms in a good location. Towel provided was the size of a hand towel! Mattress was so thin it provided little comfort and might as well laid on the floor. Similarly for the pillow which had just enough room for your head. No ATMs in town and only hotels take card payment so take plenty of cash to cover your trip up the mountains.

Incredibly sweet staff, who were welcoming and kind even when we came back covered in mud from a brutal hike. They were flexible when adjustments needed to be made, the food was amazing and a good opportunity to taste traditional Japanese cooking, and our room- we chose one with a personal onsen and courtyard- was stunningly beautiful and spacious. Both the personal, and shared, onsens were relaxing and the perfect temperature. There were few other tourists from outside Japan in the area, which made it feel like a hidden gem for tourists like us (though I'll admit that sounds a bit shallow). It's very close to spectacular hiking spots on actual live volcanos- but please bear in mind that some of them can be quite challenging. If you can push through that aspect, you will be in for an incredible journey, one where you can feel the heat of the volcano emanating from the ground as you climb its slopes. And if you choose to drive here- the best choice in my opinion- you are in for some stunning views as you meander through tunnels and mountain towns. Thank you, Okada ryokan- you were a highlight for our journey through Japan. We can't wait to come back. 本当にありがとうございました。❤️

This was a welcome visit, it was part of our package that we bought when we were visiting Shinhotaka Ropeway, on our return the bus dropped us off at the bus stop and we got to spend an hour at this onsen. Ever since I have visited Japan I’ve always wanted to sit in one of their onsens during winter and this time zi got my chance, fair to say that it was probably about 0 degrees if not less but the water in the onsen was about 40 degrees, it was so beautiful sitting in the onsen with snow all around us, if you get the chance please stop here for a soak.
