Beautiful onsen with a great view on the river. There’s no men area, it’s women and mixed. My wife told me the view from the women bath is good too.

Fantastic onsen experience in a beautiful setting by the river. Accommodation offers a traditional Japanese experience. The breakfast/dinner is expensive but worth it. The Shinhotaka ropeway trip is a must when here, the top offers great views and the opportunity to walk up the mountain to the Nishiho hut, which was still serving a whole menu of ramen etc even in November! 100% recommend a few days stay here

A fun ride up in two different cable cars. The viewing platform is well thought-out and the official photographers will also take photos on your personal device. Oh yes, the views are awesome too!

Situated among the Alps, Shinzanso is a great place to sit back and relax. They have private onsens as well which are available to all guests on a first come first serve basis. The place is around 1.5 hours away from Takayama city Center but easily accessible by bus. The food choices are also limited because of the distance.

I very much enjoyed my stay here. The location was excellent and the Onsen were simply wonderful. The ability to book the private onsen was also amazing, as it gives you your own space to relax and absorb the beauty of nature all around. The rooms were comfortable and traditionally Japanese. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for an escape into the beautiful Mountains of Japan!

Excellent, had onsen for over four hours. Warm dip and then cool off in the river. Rooms are excellent, and authentic. Will probably be back soon.

Beautiful property! It is located right next to the river which you hear all the time. The onsen are lovely (although the private onsen was closed). Swimsuits are OK, however men are allowed to bathe nude in the mixed onsen. Women are only allowed to bathe nude in the women-only onsen and have to wear a modesty wrap in the mixed bath which they give to you upon check-in. Tattoos are OK. The room was spacious and had a small separate area with a sink. Toilets are shared and there is a shared bathroom downstairs separate for male/female. Japanese style bathroom (no private showers). We loved the spectacular view from the onsen and our window. The breakfast and dinner was amazing, and plenty of food. No choices, you get a set menu. A lot of fish and vegetables, some hida beef, soups, noodles, rice and tea. We visited in November and it was not busy. We went on a hike from the Ropeway station and did not see any other hikers. Beware that this time of year there are bears around and precautions should be taken when walking in the forest. We had looked forward to the private onsen experience, yet inexplicable the private onsen were closed during our stay. They did not mention this to us beforehand when we enquired about it. Be advised that this hotel is in the middle of nowhere, there are no shops around and it is not in Kamikochi. To go to Kamikochi you would have to take two buses again (ca 45 minute trip)! It is however a 15 minute walk to the Ropeway where there is a little takeaway counter for food and you can do some hikes. The hotel does not offer lunch.

The location of this private and the secluded onsen is incredible. The dinner is very expensive at $77 AUD per person, but is very traditional, you wear a kimono and sit on the ground, with 8 courses of fresh delicious meals. Well worth a visit for 2 nights and just enjoy the onsen, be aware that the dinner is expensive and doesn't include alcohol.
