Searched in Google for sukiyaki near me and few appeared. I choose this place and walked In at 5:45pm . Was lucky to get a seat . The food was really delicious. Elderly sister gave me warm welcome and their service is excellent. I ordered their Hida beef sukiyaki, the beef was so good that I request for another plate. The price was so reasonable. Will definitely visit again if I'm back in Takayama .

Had dinner at Suzuya. There was a short waiting time as it's very popular. We tried 3 dishes from the halal menu - Hida beef yakiniku, Hida beef in miso paste cooked on a Hoba leaf and the chicken and vegetable miso nabe. Everything was delicious! The staff are very friendly too. Highly recommended.

Suzuya in Takayama is a hidden gem! Although there might be a bit of a wait to get in, the wait is absolutely worth it. The highlight here is the opportunity to cook your own delicious meat on a small barbecue at your table – a unique and fun experience. Delicious sukiyaki and grilled Hida beef! English friendly restaurant with great service. It's a family run restaurant and the current owner Teppei Shirakawa is the 4th generation owner. He was really kind and friendly. Teppei-san speaks good English because he studied in America. We loved his sukiyaki cooking demonstration which was filled with a lot of humor! The beef was of course delicious. They also offer halal grilled beef which Teppei-san specially imports from Kyushu because there is no halal beef in Hida. Even though there are no tourists now, he told us that he will still continue to offer halal beef for any customers who need it. Such a great service attitude. Definitely recommend this restaurant and the sukiyaki!

This cozy restaurant was an excellent experience. The beef was delicious and definitely worth the price! If you want to try yakiniku in Takayama, this restaurant gets a high recommendation! The chef was also very enthusiastic and the staff were all very helpful! 10/10, would definitely come back again!

Lovely one, owner and staff are super nice! They are very friendly and thoughtful, owner speaks good English as well! They will patiently teach you what to do with different ingredients and sort, great experience! For the beef, good marbling and reasonable price! Loved how rich the texture of the sauce is. Would surely come back in the future!

These guys are top notch friendly. The staff extremely high energy and caring. I had an excellent time with them and their food tasted delicious. There was a queue that didn’t take too long for me and the host was very attentive in explaining us how long it would take to get in. The service, food and evironment is everything I would want in a restaurant.

No need to worry about finding halal food when you arrive in Takayama. The shop provides a halal menu full of uniqueness and distinctive Japanese flavors. Very good service..very friendly aunt and can speak English..surprised they also speak Malay even a little. Please try the meat menu for sure you won't regret it!

What a dinner experience! If you are in Takayama looking to taste the excellent Hiba meat try "Sukiyaki", the service is superb and they speak English and Spanish, is not cheap but is worth it!!, if you want to bring it to the next level, ask for the warm Sake

Surely has to be the best Hida beef experience in Takayama! Walked in on a Monday evening at 615pm. Tried our luck without a reservation. Got lucky and landed a 4 person table with space for the baby’s stroller. Service was impeccable. Staff were all over it making sure everyone understood the menu options despite the language barrier. Hida wagyu beef steak - perfectly cooked. Served with a butter knife cause that’s all you need. Ami-Yaki and Hoba-Miso Beef were also on point. Fried eggplant side dish also excellent.

I made a reservation through their website. They emailed me promptly and reserved my seat for the next day. They were super friendly and kind. I ordered sukiyaki with Hida beef, it was so delicious. Highly recommend this place!

My friend and I absolutely loved the overall vibe and food at this restaurant. The restaurant seems to be family run and they are very welcoming to everyone who walked through the doors. We had Hoba Miso beef steak and the Amiyaki. It was absolutely delicious. The two older ladies who served us were such a delight. They were warm, friendly and really engaged with us. The young man was so friendly and told us how we should cook our meat and prepare our food. Overall, I would strongly recommend visiting this restaurant if you are staying in Takayama. In terms of food, service and atmosphere, it is the best we have had in Japan so far. I only wish I was staying longer so I could visit again.

Atmosphere is chill and cool but the staff is also really friendly. This restaurant also offer halal meat menu for muslim and the grilled meat was good. The price is expensive but I found it is quite reasonable because they made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience. 👍 Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely restaurant in Takayama, Gifu !

Besides the ❤WONDERFUL food❤, we loved the heart and soul of Suzuya! The restaurant has been in business for 56 years. The current owner is the 4th generation, and his mom is still working in the dining room. The owner was an exchange student in West Virginia when he was young and speaks English. He kindly explained how to cook the meat to perfection, and we enjoyed every bite! His grandmother was an artist, and she painted each of the beautiful charcoal braziers. The three superb woodcut/screen prints (of local customs) on the walls were done by junior high students 50 years ago.

Me, my father and my Japanese wife went there last Friday just after the COVID measures got loosened and the hospitality as well as the quality of the hide beef were outstanding as many others mentioned here before. Will definitely come by the next chance I get!

I've been in Japan over a year now, and have never met a staff that was so friendly. This was an incredibly pleasant place to eat, and I even went solo. The food was amazing, I got the miso beef set - the flavor was so good and it was a cool way to cook food I've never seen before. Highly recommend!

One of the dining highlights of our entire trip! You need to get in line for this place either right when they open or before. We got there at 4:55pm and there was already a line & there was a long line when we finished dinner. Highly recommend all of the popular dishes. We ordered the sukiyaki, barbecue and hoba-leaf speciality dish. The quality of the meat was 10/10. If you are in Takayama you have to try Hida beef.

This is one of the best meals we’ve ever had in Japan! The meat is topnotch, the hotpot is seasoned well and taste so fresh… but most of all the staff are really kind and awesome! The owner himself makes sure each and every table are served well! Great job Suzuya team love the passion, energy, and the food! A must try when you’re in Takayama!

An amazing experience in such a humble restaurant. We came when the restaurant was about to close but the staffs were very nice and welcoming. The chef spoke a great English (and surprisingly knew many indonesian phrases) and also entertaining. Their sukiyaki was on a different level, must try! I might be back for the sukiyaki.

We visited this restaurant on July 7th 2022 for dinner and the place was AWESOME! 👍 My family and I strongly recommend this place! Very friendly staffs including chefs explained us each dish to help us decide what we should order and how to enjoy the dishes we ordered. 😋 The dish I ordered was Sansai Miso Babe 山菜みそ鍋 with chicken. I would love to go back there to eat this again! After trying other restaurants in Takayama before Suzuya, my overall taste impression was 'salty' so I was concerned that it would be salty dish but nooooo, this miso nabe was so perfect and so delicious 🤤 *Sorry, we were so hungry, the dishes were so delicious, and had a wonderful chat with amazing staffs that I forgot to take many pix. I recommend you checking TripAdvisor for more info. I usually use Google and Yelp so didn't know about TripAdvisor had bunch of pix. A great place to try the Hida beef and Hoba Miso beef, which is a dish consisting of pieces of meat with beansprouts, onion, miso paste and other veggies cooked over a Hoba leaf. They don’t mention if their Hida beef is A4 or A5 like other restaurants, but it’s very tender and delicious. I’ve tried Kobe beef and Ishigaki beef before, and these premium wagyu beef are all great, I can’t really tell the difference 😆. やわらかくて、美味しい。

Best meal during our 5 days in Takayama. Very good quality food, and service was excellent. Definitely order the hoba-miso and ami-yaki sets during your visit.

Awesome dining experience in a really cosy ambiance. The staff are all so sweet and welcoming and made our dinner really special. Tried sukiyaki, amiyaki, tonkatsu and hoba miso and couldn't recommend more. Also their umeshu and sake are great!

We had 2 dinner here 2 nights in a row. It is a very rare find, as it caters for gluten free and other food intolerances. We had the sukiyaki the first night, and the pork & miso hot pot. Both were delicious. The chef & the staff were most welcoming, Speaking some English & helpful words in other languages too. Best to get a reservation, but you can try your luck at getting a table if you arrive at opening time for dinner, which is 5pm sharp. Probably considered on the pricey side if you're on a budget, but I would splash out for a treat. My daughter has food allergies so any where we go that caters for that will be pricey. This was my first meal after getting in from Tokyo. It was the perfect welcome to Takayama. The staff and the chef were all so lovely. The food was delicious and you can tell by the taste in the food that the chef truly cares about his craft. I will miss this place.

The speciality of this restaurant is Hida meat – and the chef knows how to do it! Next to it's tender structure the meat is very rich in flavour. The meat is served nearly raw on a little grill at the table which is a real eye-catcher. Also the ambience of the restaurant is very nice to enjoy in the evening after an exhaustive day. On top of that, the owner and employee are very friendly and can speak English.

Amazing place to try the iconic hida beef. Came for dinner around 5.45pm and there was a short queue, but we managed to get seated quickly. Staff were pleasant and helpful! We ordered the hoda miso, pickled vegetables and fried eggplant. The elderly ladies spoke english to our surprise and we made our order with ease. The man was energetic and offered to help us take a group photo without any prompt. He also advised us on when to mix our beef. The hoda miso and pickled vegetables were good as expected. The fried eggplant was interesting as it was marinated and there is a strong tempura fragrance from it. I would definitely return here for the food and service!

The food was excellent and at a great price. The service was great; the owner was very friendly and explained our meal to us before offering to take pictures of us at the table. All the staff was great and really seemed to enjoy their work. We were lucky to get a table without reservations by arriving just after opening at 17:00, but to guarantee a spot here it is safer to make a reservation.

It was pretty quiet from outside but when you are in you will be greeted by warm welcome and a very nice ambience of an authentic Japanese restaurant. The people are super nice, they explain the meals one by one and take pictures of you before you even asked :) The meals was great! Special thanks to the restaurant because I left my cap and they helped me in arranging a fast delivery to my next destination :) Highly recommended!

We enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. The staff were very friendly, and provided the menu and service in English. It has the ambience of a traditional Japanese building. It was enjoyable to cook meat over a genuine charcoal grill. Don’t worry, there is no smoke from the charcoal… but the flavor is excellent.

Such a cute cozy place to get Hida beef yakiniku style or in a hot broth! We got a grilled set and also a sukiyaki to share. The people there were warm and friendly, they asked where we were from and seemed very happy that we enjoyed the food. Hope to come back soon!

Food was really unique as it was our first time trying butteryaki. We also ordered sukiyaki and the beef literally melted in our mouths. While food was excellent, the service was even better! The female staff (I didn't get her name) serving us was welcoming and put up quite a show while cooking our food for us. She took beautiful photos as well and was game to take a selfie with us as well. When we were leaving, I said goodbye to her and she came out of the kitchen to give me a hug. I'm so touched by her gesture and it will be a dinner I will remember for a long time.

Great restaurant! We had the vegetarian the chicken hotpot. The owners were really friendly and had a great energy. They even took a quick photo for us. It got a little busy so I recommend making a reservation.

The Sukiyaki with hida beef is a must try! It was so delicious that we had to ordered extra beef. Staff were efficient and nice. Great experience would definitely recommend it!
