A unique museum that showcases the Japanese lifestyle during the Showa period (1920s-1980s). The museum has a huge collection of cultural artefacts that you can relate to, if you are born and grow up during those period of times, and has in contact with those items one way or another. It offers retro interactive experiences such as video games, pinball machines & etc. One can spend hours here if you want to get nostalgic feelings of the old times, like walking back in the old street of everyday Japan. Absolutely recommended 👍🏼

It's worth every penny. Be prepared to spend hours in there look at all the details and experience what life is like back in the days. The old candy shop when you walk in is free, you pay a ticket to go into the museum. If you don't have time, just a visit to the Cady shop is good too. Experience picking out small, cheap snacks like a little kid in Japan. I absolutely love this place, the feeling of this place, the beauty, all the old items you can touch and play with. It's like you walked into a movie or an actual street of old Japan.

A small but interesting museum. You don’t have to live in the Showa period to really inmerse in the museum. It has lots of fun and interactive elements, good for kids! Items and exhibits were in a good condition, some are still functioning. I really enjoy my visit, but the movie theatre is a little bit unsettling when I enter by myself lol. Worth the ¥1,000 entrance fee!

昭和の香りたっぷり、想像以上に懐かしい。SHOWA forever! I miss those days. I am nostalgic about that time. everything brings back memories. There will come a day when we can talk and reminisce about these times. Times, how they spin going through cycles of joy and sorrow.

We almost didn’t go in but ended up loving the Takayama Showa-kan Retro Museum. It was 1,000 yen for 2 people and we spent close to two hours here. It has tons of antiques and memorabilia from post-WWII Japan and (unlike most museums) you can touch/use many of the items. It’s set up like little stores and upstairs is a mock school room and typical living room. The best part was trying the retro pachinko machines. Kids (or kids at heart) would have fun here!

The front area is a cute little toy/candy shop you can enter for free, while the back is the museum proper. They offer a 200 JPY discount if you follow the museum account on Tiktok or Instagram. The museum area itself is small, but it's absolutely full of stuff! There are so many different rooms (living room, game room, classroom, barber shop, slot machine shop, cinema, music shop, and so on!) all capturing that Showa era vibe. There are so many trinkets on display too. There's even a room with a collection of various camera models. You can interact with some elements, like entering a phone booth and playing with the slot machines. On the second floor, there's a working famicom with Super Mario Bros that you can play with. Really enjoyed this place :)

Fun museum displaying showa era items. You get to see the doctors office, police office, electrical appliance shop, classroom etc. There are small interactivities such as game consoles and pachinko. Some machines are really old so they don't all work. It was a beautiful mess and every angle has a nice shot. It's all in Japanese, so you might need to rely on google to translate.

Should’ve gone here instead of the Retro Museum (also in town) 🤔 Looks more organized and less rowdy as compared to that one. Will definitely go inside the next time we visit Takayama 😌

Time Warp Overall Enjoyment (+1): Loved this place. I am a big fan of theme parks and this small little museum was definitely reminiscent of them in that there were many separate little areas, "shops" you could walk into, even a throwback Pachinko area where you can play old Pachinko machines. I think my personal favorite was the restaurant-themed room as it felt the most organic. Value (+1): 800JPY per adult, I would say it's totally worth it. Probably spent around 30-45 minutes total perusing the two floors of the museum. Environment (+1): Great themes in all of the various areas, loved the classroom, restaurant, barber. The first "street" that you walk down when you enter the museum and head to the right is captivating and truly puts you in the Showa era. Quality (+1): Everything was well taken care of. The fact that they have dated functioning Pachinko machines shows how they take care of the contents of the museum! Service (+1): Friendly, courteous, and informative. No complaints.

Fantastic museum in the center of Takayama that takes you back to the 60's, 70's and 80's Japan. Lots of items from those periods to see and there are even some interactive parts in the museum as well. You can play on old pachinco and slots machines, you can play old video games and even do a dress up party. If you're in Takayama this is a must see and do museum. Entrance fee is small and a visit worthwhile!

It is a museum that has collected many toys and antiques. There are a lot of angles to take pictures, even though the old school books of Japanese students are still kept. It would have been better if they hadn't let the dust settle on those old things and I think it would be very nice and useful in the future.

A bit small but very fun. Tickets are a bit overpriced tho.

Absolutely loved it! Something different than the traditional museums, loved that u could see the old Japan. They had a lot of vintage items and the sets were all so detailed. So well done!

An interesting museum in Takayama where you can learn about the Japanese lifestyle during the Showa period. Lots of interesting artifacts on display. Highly recommended!

This museum was fantastic and well worth the admission price (1000 yen for adults). The displays were staged brilliantly and the sheer volume and condition of all the items were staggering. Lots of interaction throughout so our 7 year old son loved it also. Definitely worth an hour of your time.

A fun display of post-war Japanese cultural artefacts, with every day places such as the barber's, the classroom etc recreated in a lot of detail. We had fun in the retro 80s games room playing Mario and King Kong and enjoyed the old pachinko machines as well. There isn't a lot of explanation and so for non Japanese natives, many references remain obscure. It would be great to create a narrative for foreign (and Japanese) visitors, to make the visit more informative.

Great experience if you ever wanted to feel Showa Era. A bit pricy (800JPY per person) but definitely interesting.

It was a rainy afternoon and we were looking for something to do. This is definitely a nice way to spend the afternoon. It was fun to see how it looked like during the Showa-kan period. Also, you can take photos too.
