A very educational place to learn about Takayama's most famous festival. However, the place has limited displays. You'd only see 4 of the major pagodas here. The others are spread throughout town. Regardless, it's a perfect place to discover the details of tje festival if you are a non local. Entrance is a bit pricey though.

You can learn and see cultural assests for 1500 Yen. Little expensive, but worth for it.

Beautiful and intricate floats, but only four are on display at a time. Even with some nice, slow gazing you'll be out in under 20 minutes. For 1,000 yen, it's a rip. The second tiny museum doesn't dull the pain either.

A great place to see the Takayama autum festival floats close up from different angles. They offer explainations as to the meaning and logistics of the floats, with available audio guides. Do pick up an audio guide if you're visiting the floats, you'll get a lot more out of the experience.

A peaceful place to stop by for cultural study about the show. The staff was so kind. They have the English Audio that explain the meaning of every piece and action made for the festival. They also mentioned that the collection changes every four months, according to the weather. So a revisit is a must!

Nice floats (4 of the 11 exhibit). Free audio guide, includes the museum next door. A video about the spring and autumn festival, but nothing more. It costs 1000 yen I think, so it depends if you want to expend this amount or if it does not worth it. The shrine outside or close to this museum is beautiful.

It is curious to visit all the carriages. But especially the Nikko Temple miniature.

Well worth the visit to the museum. Really HUGE FLOATS that are hoisted onto the shoulders of many men & paraded thru the street during the festival. Beautifully & intricately decorated. Bring your camera to take pictures but please remember NO FLASH.

If you can't make the festival itself this is the second best thing you can do! Beautiful exhibit!

Very informative with wonderful pieces of history and art preserved for the public to see. There was a lot of information that had not been translated from Japanese to English, however we were able to enjoy the artistry of objects. The audio guides are free and give a wonderful rundown of the cultural heritage of the exhibits on display. Keep in mind the exhibits rotate, so a specific yatai (float) may not be on display when you visit.

If you are a history buff on how the Yatai operate and history of the parades, its a must go. If not, might give it a pass

I visited the museum with floats (Yatai) that are listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The museum is located inside Hachiman-gu Sakurayama Shrine. The star attractions? Stunning floats that are true masterpieces, adorned with lacquer, vibrant paintwork, exquisite woodwork, intricate metalwork, and impressive smithery. The size of these floats is astounding! Imagine the Daihachi-Tai with wheels over 1.56 meters and the Hou-ou-tai showcasing a Phoenix with a wingspan of 1.8 meters and height of 8.8 meters! 😲 My absolute favourite was the Hotei-tai float, home to a dancing marionette. It takes 8 puppeteers, maneuvering 36 strings inside the float, to make this marionette perform its awe-inspiring jumps and somersaults 😲 I had the chance to watch a behind-the-scenes video of this in the visual room. Don't miss the last photo for a close-up glimpse of the small, but mighty marionette. The Gold shrine in the photo is a portable shrine called Mikoshi and weights about 2.5 tonnes 😱 80 people and two long bars are needed to carry the shrine. All the floats are located in an exhibition hall with 10 metre ceiling height 🫣 These floats are changed three times a year so people can see different ones when visiting 😲 Just think of the teamwork required to navigate these behemoths through the crowd-filled streets. That's what I call the spirit of a matsuri! 🙌
