This place is a treat! It is a shame we only stayed her one night, dinner here was AMAZING but there are only like 5 tables so reserve in advance for 5,000 yen you will not be disappointed at all! You do share bathrooms which was a little weird st first but we got over it, the rooms were a nice size and the common areas were just perfect the staff spoke multiple languages and really provided great service. This place is a must!

I don't know how I lucked out in finding this place but I just had the most amazing and memorable evening at Auberge Hidanomori! I am sitting on a bullet train thinking about it now :) The place itself is beautiful, only made better by coupling it with the tranquil nature by which it is run. And the food... the FOOD! That was the best meal I have had in Japan, and I've done everything from street food to a very fancy restaurant in Tokyo. The food alone is making me think about trying to squeeze one more night here before I go back home! They also really know their wine here and they had a huge selection of really good wines. Seriously... come for the beauty and the peaceful getaway in the woods, and stay for the incredible food.

What an experience. We stayed here for just a night but wish it were longer. Something about this place just relaxes you - the decor, vibe, warm fireplace, I can't put a finger on it but everything comes together so nicely. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, I was concerned about a shared bathroom but they turned out to be exceptionally clean (and we never waited). The food, like all other reviewers have waxed lyrically about, is absolutely sublime. Some wizardry is going on in the back kitchen you'd almost think this was a full blown restaurant masquerading as a BnB. The family that runs this gem are extremely attentive, patient, and kind, multiple languages are not an issue. Just come by, you won't regret it.

From beginning to end, this place was pure delight! What a gem in Hida-Takayama. Don’t let the location deter you - they have a shuttle service to take you into town. It is totally worth it to stay at this property. Everything is well apportioned, extremely thoughtful and well curated; and I’m not just talking food and wine, though they were certainly a highlight. It’s even the scent, music, windows, doors, fixtures, lighting, bathroom facilities (yes, shared facilities- two LARGE bathrooms with wooden onsen like tub, and two shower heads) … just everything. Additionally, it is run by a couple who has decades of hospitality experience between them, and the hotel itself has been a family business for over 40 years. I just left and am already dreaming of being back. Thanks for the great memories. I have every intention of returning one day.

Had a wonderful stay earlier this year (May). The property is ran by a family who really knows how to do the job - extremely friendly, paying attention to the details. They offer not only to pick you up/ drop off by car when you arrive at the property, but also during your stay which was really helpful. We opted for their Italian dinner the first night of the stay and it was one of the best meals we had during our trip in Japan (also a nice change after eating Japanese food for 2 weeks!). Everything (also the breakfast) was homemade, fresh and made by one of the family members. Great wine list during the dinner. After a day of sightseeing/ hiking it was really relaxing to sit by the fireplace. Everyone from the guests seemed to have enjoyed the vibe and respect the quite atmosphere. Myself I am not the biggest fan of shared bathrooms but it was really not a problem - everything was super clean and the two bathing rooms very spacious. Great experience to "shower" in the traditional Japanese way and relax in the hot tub. We never had to queue for the bathroom to be available. Could not recommend this place more! Kasia & Paul

Great staff, great rooms and great food. The location (5 km from Takayama station) was alarming at first, but the staff and service are so amazing, they simply pick you up and get you back to the hotel/city center on demand. The hotel itself is in a very peaceful place, which makes the atmosphere super elegant and relaxing (and that’s what we looked for after a day of traveling the mountains or the old town). Everything is clean and well planned to the smallest detail. Simply a great place I would highly recommend to anyone arriving to Takayama.

We stayed here for 2 nights and also had the pleasure of eating at the incredible restaurant. This is honestly one of the best places we've ever stayed, they also picked up/dropped us off in town every day. If we could give them 6/5 stars we would. Highly recommend staying here if you're visiting beautiful Takayama.

I had a great stay here. The staff was very friendly, and they offered to provide a free shuttle service from Takayama station (for me or for my luggage only) The room, restroom and bath looked all really clean. The breakfast was really good, nothing like I ever experienced in a hotel. You can see that they take the guesthouse very seriously. I would definitely recommend going here if you're planning to stay in Takayama

Lovely Lodge up in the woods near Takayama. There is a shuttle service for whenever you need to go downtown. The family who runs the place are extremely welcoming!! Super nice people. The food is also really good. You should definitely try their dinner menu one day!

Auberge hida no mori is an Intimate, calm and relaxing stay. The food and natural wine course must be tried. Breakfast is simply outstanding. The attention to detail, style and presentation is lux retreat. And your hosts are a beautiful, talented family. The best stay in Japan for 2023.

So so beautiful. Gorgeous food, wine and atmosphere. Our room had an amazing view and the most comfortable beds. Team are so helpful and will pick up / drop off from Takayama station whenever needed. Using private wooden bathtubs was such a treat. We are leaving feeling very relaxed. Hope to come back one day!

If I was able to give this hotel and restaurant 6 stars I would. Starting with the hotel aspect, this place is one of the most comfortable relaxing places we've stayed, even when compared to other 5 star hotels in Japan and Europe. The finishes in all of the rooms were expertly done with such a beautiful focus on immersing yourself in the nature and serenity all around you. It may be further from the main town, but it is because of that distance that it is able to showcase everything which makes the Hida region so special. For days you do want to go to town or the train station they offer a very nice shuttle service that can take you there and back. You have your own toilet in the room, and there are private showers which are shared between the guests with a very relaxing environment and beautiful tub, and although it was quite foreign coming from America, I wouldn't have it any other way. The restaurant portion was amazing in every single way. After eating at Michelin star restaurants throughout Europe, I can easily say that this restaurant surpasses everything those places try to do. Every dish appears to be so effortlessly crafted, but every bite showcases the deep intricate understanding of flavors behind it all. Every single dish was beautifully presented and memorable to the point we had dinner two days in a row there and somehow were able to enjoy a completely different menu on back to back days which is unheard of in the restaurant industry in America. Breakfast was simple, nutritious and delicious. I can not rave enough about the chef and the entire family team at Auberge Hida No Mori. They all were so welcoming and kind, and this stay was easily one of our favorites during our 6 week trip throughout many of Japan's towns and cities. I wish we had more time to spend lounging and enjoying the atmosphere they have set up at Auberge! It is exactly what every 5 star hotel and Michelin star restaurant strives to do and Auberge Hida No Mori executes it so effortlessly perfect.
