Charming old street with traditional houses and some of the shops are selling century old crafts and food. There’s a traditional miso and soya sauce shop with free tasting. Both the miso paste and soya sauce were so nice. Wished I could have bought more to bring home. The Miso and soy sauce shop is called Ohnoya Takeda. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and for some reasons half of the shops were closed. It was still worthwhile visiting with lots of snacks available and shops to browse. We walked from the start of the street right till the end where it joins the river. Autumn colours were beautiful in Takayama generally. The maple trees we thought were plastic at first but they were actually real trees with very vivid colours.

Love walking along this stretch of old Takayama. It was like a step into history. Enjoyed the Takayama Float Festivals, held yearly in April..

It's a nice area to walk around, shop, and eat snacks. I think it's wonderful that they were able to preserve this piece of history so well. Most shops close at around 5 or 6PM, but it's still worth walking around here in the evening for the vibes. It's definitely a touristy spot, but not really crowded when I visited (11/28 to 11/29).

Really gorgeous place to visit. I highly recommend the shop selling all the cat souvenirs (we took back many nice hand made items), the sake tasting brewery and eating at the other sake brewery

One of Takayama's fun tourist destinations! On the east bank of the Miyagawa River, between the Kajibashi and the Nakabashi, there are a few streets whose face has hardly changed in the past century(s), and where only pedestrians and rickshaws move here. Old-fashioned cozy.

Visiting in late December to the middle of January doesn't assure a winter wonderland experience. Unfortunately, during our 3-day stay in Takayama, both the town itself and Hida Folk Village didn't meet our expectations. Takayama appeared somewhat lifeless, with around 75% of the shops closing from late December to the first week of January. Most shops opened at 11 am and closed by 4 pm. Consequently, we resorted to consuming items from Family Mart during our stay from January 4 to 6, 2024, amidst our self-guided tours. But in a way wine tasting, hoping and local delicacies can still be shop on countable stores in Takayama Japan. Late January to February would prpbably be the best date for full winter wonderland in Japan.

Overcrowded with tourists, some unfortunately don't realize they are culturally appropriating while walking around wearing the traditional Kimono. Best to come here at dusk when the shops begin to close and the streets are less busy. Enjoy the local street food at one of the many small shops, take a rickshaw ride or just explore the streets.

Beautiful traditional streets, but they are very busy in the day and a lot of the shops are similar. Many are lovely and are worth looking inside. However, if you go at twilight you will see them in their true beauty without the crowds!

Beautiful area to just walk around and take in the sights, smells and tastes of historic and rural Japan. It's a big area and there are many houses to go in, so be ready to walk a lot. Also, do not forget to sample the many food items along the way.

A place that brings up u back to historic times. Best time to visit this place is early in the morning when no establishment is opened yet. There are little to no people at all and the streets are all yours. I love the fact that they maintain the place even removing the ugly electric wires overhead. This place is a must visit.

The street is beautiful. But the gem is inside the houses. Alot of them are now retail shops but do explore deep inside them. They use the whole house with galleries, gardens, contemplation areas. As fir shoping, its authentic Japanese handicraft. Kawaii!

If i have the chance, i would do it all over again. I mean, old town vibe is always relaxing for the soul. Recommend to dine in one of the cafe and experience a true Japanese culture.

Such a pleasant vibe and not overly busy. A lot of small shops and local foods to try would recommend all of it! The walk is about 10 minutes from the station and the strip is about 10 minutes long. Insta: @curious.clint

These historic streets were really well worth visiting in Takayama. Many unique little houses, now mostly used as shops. Gift shops selling unique Hida lacquerware, Sake shops, restaurants and so on. Definitely worth the visit when in Takayama. Highly recommended!!

Great place to take a stroll. Nothing much to buy or eat. Mostly souvenirs or desserts at touristy price. Street can be quite crowded here for photo taking.

Very nice town to experience buildings during Edo period. There is a lot of food shops, and the one I encounter is a shop that selling homemade miso paste. The weather was freezing and they serve free sample of their miso soup (a mix of white and red miso paste) and it was delicious, I ended up bought the miso paste. There is also a rickshaw service, and the driver will take you around the town.

Interesting architecture in the well-maintained historic district - but - it is teaming with tourists and shops selling tchotchkes and sweets.

Popular old town area in Takayama, similar to the Gion area in Kyoto. There are a lot of shops, especially sake shops, in this area, so one can easily spend 1+ hour or more here. One of the key places to visit in Takayama town

Little charming alley. Tips: visit at late afternoon if you want the alley (almost) all for yourself

Great experience for a turist, we loved the village and visiting this, very well preserved house, helped us understand how life was hundreds of years ago in that area. The top floors are really interesting!

A nice place to visit and take a stroll. Plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants. For sushi lover, Hida Beef Sushi is a must but be prepared for the long Q.

Beautiful town! Must be here and see. Day and night here are great. A lot what to do and see. Great traditional goods - vary, tasty meals, galleries and museums, and kind friendly people. Not far to visit Hida Village and Shirakawa-go Village. Onsens!!

Beautiful area, with old houses. Nice to just stroll around. However the old culture feeling isn't there. Everything is too commercialised now. But overall, recommended.
