During a recent trip to the Takayama Area (Hirayuonsengo) my spouse needed to see a doctor to acquire a rescue inhaler due to complications from previously treated strep throat infection. The hospital was busy at 9:50am with mostly elderly people and parents with children. Despite the swarm people, we were greeted by an Assistant and taken to the reception area. We were provided forms that were written in Japanese and English. Prior to arriving we translated a few phrases using Google Translate and saved screenshots to show the receptionist. This proved to be very helpful. The receptionist made a copy of the Passport and we were provided of an estimation of charges, (payable by yen or credit card.) Next, we were escorted to another waiting area teeming with people waiting for services. After my spouse's vitals were taken and recorded, we were escorted to the next waiting area by the doctor's cube. After a short wait (perhaps the doctor was reviewing the intake records) we were seen by the doctor. The doctor spoke to us in very clear English and was thorough in her questioning to determine the best course of treatment for my spouse. The doctor did not seem rushed to prescribe medicine and provided us with a few options. We determined that the rescue inhaler would be the best course of action. After leaving the doctor's cube we were escorted to the reception area, payment area, and pharmacy. The total cost for the treatment and medicine was about $210.00. Doctor's visit $100.00 and medicine (2 inhalers) $110.00. Total time involved, less than 2 hours. Considering how busy the hospital was this wasn't a problem! If you are sick or in need of care, I would not hesitate to go to this hospital between the hours of 8:00am-11:00am for outpatient care. The staff was attentive, kind, friendly, and professional. Excellent job Takayama Red Cross Hospital!

We came here with a very sick child. Excellent care. Excellent service. Couldn't have asked for, or received, more. If you need a hospital in Takayama go here

This hospital serves the excellent services for foreign traveler. The staffs and doctor are able to communicate in English. They are very considerate too and we are impressed by their passion and help. For travelers without insurance in Japan, the charges are around 30,000 yens ( this is the pricing including the certificate of medical treatment at 20,000 yens and other charges, not include the medicines). Thanks for Dr 岩田 and the nurse 大宮 san used a long time for medical check up. Thanks

Had a terrible fever in the middle of the night. My hotel called ahead and told them I was coming to the hospital. All of the doctors and nurses were super friendly and helpful and all spoke pretty good english. They were also patient with my below average Japanese skills. I couldn't be more pleased with how I was looked after. I didn't stay overnight which I was a little disappointed about as I would have loved to have checked the food out in a Japanese hospital.

I fell sick (internal infection) on a Friday - I was worried I wouldn't be able a doctor due to being a tourist, not able to speak Japanese and being in a country town. Fortunately my guest house managed to arrange an appointment at the emergency hospital for me on the same day. The appointment itself went smoothly, with a medical translator in virtual attendance, and 2 very helpful and kind nurses and a patient doctor. There was a bit of a wait (took 3.5 hrs total) but that is expected with emergency hospitals. I spent 36,608 YEN including various blood tests and samples, and 7 days of medication. I am very satisfied with my experience and grateful for the prompt and thorough help I received from all staff - doctors, nurses, reception, pharmacy, translation. Thank you!

We had a great experience at this hospital as visitors. Had to take my teen girl with an ear infection to get checked. The process was very efficient and pleasant. We couldn’t make an appointment for same day however they mentioned that if we arrive before 11:00 AM we will be seen. Once we got there we were escorted to see the doctor within just a few minutes. There was an English speaking intern that assisted the doctor and could help translate everything for us. They identified the issue very quickly, prescribed a few medications that would help her, and after a bit of a wait, we had everything we needed. She can’t swallow pills so they crushed each pill and individually wrapped and labeled them, amazing service. The doctor’s appointment and the medication cost us 15,000 which sounded like a very reasonable price. They left us with a form explanation in Japanese the procedure and medication in case we need to see another doctor here again. Fantastic service!
