Delicious mochi. The owner is so genuine and nice, and took painstaking effort to advertise his sweets in English. Everything is reasonably priced. The chick mochi is buttery and so soft, it melts in your mouth. This place is a hidden gem!

Excellent service, gave us complimentary tea the moment we entered, helped us to refill, and recommended many good mochi. Strawberry one was incredible.

This place is an absolute gem!! The mochi is beautiful, such a cute little chick that melts in your mouth. The owner is an incredibly nice guy, as sweet as his creations. He takes pride in his work, as he should! It's a little out of the way but it was so delicious we returned the next day. Apart from the chick, I strongly recommend the chestnut and the other snow white mochi ball!

The shop attendant/owner is super friendly! He explained every sweet he had in great detail, gave us tea and let us taste some of the sweets. If you're looking for traditional Japanese sweets look no further!

Really cute little place with really reasonably priced mochi! The owner is really sweet! He told us it is his first shop and he is the only employee so he is very busy. He likes mixing eastern and western flavors in his recipes which is most obvious in the hiyoko mochi which tastes like mochi wrapped around buttery cookie dough! Loved the creative mix of flavors! We also tried the smooth white bean mochi and the sesame mochi which we also enjoyed. Would definitely come back!

Was walking around randomly and came across this shop and saw this cute japanese mochi dessert and decided to give it a try, it was great! Never made a bad choice, we bought one to try, and after that another 2 more to take away, it simply tastes great . They use green beans instead of red beans which is really nice. The owner was really friendly and nice to, even served us 2 green tea when we took away our 1 mochi when the shop was closing. We then decided to buy 2 more for appreciation , we even decided to go next day to buy more like 10 maybe but the shop is closed! :( wish him all the best, and excellent and well friendly service guy owner. Cheers!

A very nice person preparing super delicious and nice mochi, hiyoko (cick) mochi, and a perfect matcha tea: a place worth visiting when in Takayama, where poetry meets sweetness!

A beautiful Sweets Shop with a great owner who really explained everything very well. The sweets are amazing and very local and traditional but some also have a great modern twist like the sweet little chicken sweets. If you want to have a authentic sweets shop away from the Tourist traps go to this place with a very special service!

Cute little shop. We go the matcha set. Best mochi we've ever had. Super soft and melts in your mouth. The owner gave us some samples of the other sweets on the side to try.

Came here because of the reviews - totally worth it! Some items are seasonal, so we were unable to try the strawberry mochi. However kiwi was available and it was delectable. Light like a marshmallow, combined with the sweetness of the soy filling and the tartness of the kiwi made a refreshing snack. The chick one was also delicious. The owner was extremely friendly and explained everything to us in simple English. Very helpful. If you’re passing by 100% recommend a visit!

We arrived at 6:30pm but still the shop owner is super friendly and patient. He offered us free green tea and refreshment. He explained the ingredients of each one of his products. I can tell he is in love with Japanese confections and is proud of his products, and he should be ;) The service and altitude give us a Japanese kind of elegant vibe. Chick Mochi is so cute and tastes good, not too sweet which is great! Sake jelly, made of local sake, is surprisingly unique and amazing! Today’s Fruit mochi is kiwi fruit, refreshing and well-balanced! It worths a 20-min-walk from hotel :D

Very friendly owner and very accommodating of English speaking visitors. We received a free sample of a new mochi sweet when we arrived. I loved the texture and taste of the mochi. We purchased a couple items for dining in and a couple items for later. We were also provided with green tea while we enjoyed the sweets.

Hiyoko-An in Takayama is a haven for Japanese sweet lovers. The strawberry mochi is an absolute delight, with its soft, chewy texture and a burst of luscious strawberry filling. The friendly owner adds a personal touch, making the experience even more special. The shop's ambiance is charming, reflecting their commitment to tradition. Don't miss this authentic taste of Japan. Five stars and beyond.

Vegan review: none of their mochi is vegan. It's made with eggs and butter. They have an item that's not mochi, which is vegan - but very much seems second fiddle. If vegan, then skip!
