St. Catherine's Church

Tourist attraction Catholic church

👍👍 It is one of the oldest hurches and a beautiful, old building BUT.. I don't like the fact that one of the few remaining Catholic churches in town has been carved out and is now used for entertainment (and some art exhibitions). It lacks piety.. and even though I am no longer a Catholic, this hurts...

It is one of the oldest hurches and a beautiful, old building BUT.. I don't like the fact that one of the few remaining Catholic churches in town has been carved out and is now used for entertainment (and some art exhibitions). It lacks piety.. and even though I am no longer a Catholic, this hurts me deeply. Right now the space hosts an exhibition of Estonian textile, leather, glass and jewelery artists.

The largest church in medieval Northern Europe and contemporary Tallinn, St. Catherine's Church (Püha Katariina kirik) with its wonderful aura and acoustics has become a popular venue for concerts, plays, and exhibitions. The part used as a concert hall is actually the ruins of the church that was rented to a merchant called Koch by the city in the 19th century; the ruins were converted into a granary and a warehouse. Moreover, the ruins of St. Catherine's have seen versatile use as a car repair workshop, warehouse, for film industry purposes, etc. – everything that requires a large room with a high ceiling. However, recent decades have brought education and culture back to this house of god.

It was closed when I was there, but there are medieval ornaments that should not be missed. The ornaments should be protected against the weather, in my opinion, as they are at risk of disappearing.

A nice old spot of Tallinn. Not much to see. There is a museum here where you can see the walls but it's cash only.

Unfortunately only ruins remain. Western portals are interesting.

As of July 2017, undergoing major renovations. Not much to see from this point. Go around the block to the monastery or St. Paul and St. Peter's Cathedral. You can only see the doors from here.
