One of the sites we visited during our Turkey trip in September 2018. According to the historian Eusebius, Saint John returned to Ephesus with Mary after being banished from Jerusalem between 37 and 42 A.D. After the execution of St.Paul, John continued to write and died at Ephesus and was buried in the southern foothills of Ayasuluk Hill. The present church was constructed here by Emperor Justinian in the Sixth century (I.Akan Atila Archaelogist, "Ephesus"). The plan of reconstruction at the site, tells us that it was a magnificent monument to the Saint. I was impressed by the craftsmanship of the stone carving displayed in the ruins. A segment of architrave displaying "Egg and Dart" decoration particularly took my eye. See photo under the heading "St. Jean Church".

The remains of the church and the basilica is just near to the famous and well-preserved Selçuk Castle. The whole archeological site looks down to the city from the top of the hill and gives a great view of the valley.

Very well preserved and rebuilded with a huge site to visit. The Castle close at 17.00 and they increase the tickets to nowadays 18 TL (2019). Not suitable for wheelchairs althought there's a ramp in the main entrance

The current 2023 ticket is 100TL pp, yet another site hit hard by inflation. The site is rather barren, chaotic, and not very interesting. Nothing amazing at all. The best part is the cafe, and WCs up the hill into the site. And the local dog who loves to get into group pictures was amusing. From cafe the views are great (including the isa bey mosque, under serious renovation) the cafe is cute and WCs are fantastic. Other than that, there's not much to see here. Unless you're into religious history, it might be a pass.
