Lovely food. Predominantly Peshawri cuisine but they also have a few other Pakistani dishes; all food can be set to your preferred level of spice and hotness. In my York visit, I didn't find any better desi restaurant.

Had Kabuli Pulao with chicken (takeaway). Top stars for how it tasted but will have been even better with either lamb or beef meat. Subtle Afghan style minimalist decor inside with the Farsi/Dari song ‘Man Aamadeh am’ playing in the background. For those who know Urdu/Hindi this song is the original version of ‘Dil khoya khoya’. So yes, great atmosphere and friendly staff. If they were to ever introduce Chapli Kebabs and Tikkas, I’m sure a few dozen of us here around York will not have to go to Leeds for those items. Will definitely visit again with family and try some of their other items on their limited(ish) menu. This place was like a breath of fresh air for me and I will love to see them grow. All the very best! Visit 2: Visiting Chutni is like coming home to family. The warm welcoming hosts, true to their origins, always make you feel special. They are passionate about what they do and always eager to improve and bring in more variety. Dare I say their version of the Kabuli Pulao with mouth watering tender soft meat is a much healthier, much less greasy and less salty one of the original recipe. Something you’d expect when it’s cooked at home by loved ones up in the North-western frontiers of Pakistan and Afghanistan. By the way, that was one pleasantly interesting twist on the peri-peri chicken and we quite liked that too. And the girls loved your ice cream. Great hospitality. Genuine folk serving genuine food made with love and care. Bear in mind it takes a while though because it’s not microwaved food. Their decor, ambiance and the melodic Afghan/Pashtun/Iranian music playing in the background, all this make it a pleasant wait. We will be visiting soon for the halwa poori and channa breakfast.

The vegetarian option for the breakfast is outstanding! The food was served with great care and a comforting hospitality. On the other hand, for the dinner option, the Palao rice with lamb and the chicken Malai were very good ! The flavour and the spices were balanced accordingly to give a great experience for us :). I would definitely bring friends over for a small gathering and enjoy the food together.

Delicious food & amazing restaurant! Visited here with my family & the staff were so attentive & lovely. The restaurant looks so beautiful, the decor is gorgeous & it’s extremely clean. The food is absolutely amazing, plenty of flavour and something for everyone. You can choose how spicy you would like your food which is perfect. Our 15 month old baby loved every bite & our 11 year old said within minutes of eating that he couldn’t wait to go back again as it was so amazing! Also the ice cream is delicious & some lovely flavours to choose from. We can’t wait to visit again.

Absolutely gem of a place.... We were in the local area, and on the way back to London, a quick search and the reviews drew us here. We were seated by Ragnar…yes the Viking named host at an Indian…. But wait… he explained the menu, and we found out that this was a family run business, the main chef being his wife from the north eastern park of Pakistan. The menu was perfect sized, and Ragnar recommended a few things after asking about what type food we were looking for. The biryani was just being cooked, but were recommended the “Ami Kadoo with Nan” (bottle gourd) as the biryani was still being cooked….. enjoyed that as starters. Also the spice was adjusted to taste. Chicken Biryani was fragrant & flavoursome. Lamb Bhoona was on the bone (with the marrow as a treat)… amazing food… shame we don’t live close by, highly recommend this place. Amazing to see a small family run place with such a warm welcome, and amazing food!!! Well done to Ragnar & Farhana for venturing into this business, I hope you flourish!!!

BEST PLACE FOR FOOD IN YORK! Had such an amazing experience with my family. Each dish had its own authentic, unique taste and the staff are so lovely! The decor is also very beautiful, perfect to celebrate an occasion too. Definitely recommend!! Wish I could score higher, will definitely be returning 🥰

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa!!! My people!! Must say it was lovely surprise, didn’t really know before going in, thought it would be an Indian restaurant, as it was a spur of the moment choice. But after seeing the menu was really excited to try all the traditional Pashtun food, must say it didn’t disappoint, will be recommending to family members, also thanks for the kahwa and great hospitality, we will definitely be back.

Our party of two shared the perfectly seasoned Chicken Biryani and the deliciously tangy Chicken Malai Handi with an assortment of breads, dips, and sauces: The chicken in the Biryani was tender and seasoned throughout with an incredible depth of flavour. I highly recommend this dish even if its just to taste the meat - we'll be ordering it again! The Malai Handi was creamy, tangy, and refreshing at our chosen middling spice level and well complemented the Biryani. The owners were wonderful and welcoming with great conversation and stories of the origin and inspiration for their beautiful restaurant. On their recommendation we finished the evening with cups of Peshawari Kahwa Tea knowing that we would return soon. Thank you for the fantastic meal, and our compliments to the talented chefs and professional servers.

A fantastic find. Looking for somewhere to meet my niece for an evening meal and this was convenient. We received a really warm welcome, with an explantion of the history of the restaurant and menu. Freshly cooked food taking account of our preferences for spicy heat and flavours. We had a combination of meat and vegetarian mains, followed by puds and green tea. Friendly, great food - in fact my niece commented it was the best food she had since being in York

On a recent trip to York with my partner, we browsed Trip Advisor for somewhere to eat. We were in the mood for some Asian food and came across Chutni. It seemed to be very highly rated so we through we'd give it a shot. The restaurant is located a bit further out from York centre, but don't let this put you off. When we walked in we were met by the owner, who was very pleasant. He took us to our table and I noticed the lovely décor straight away. As this was our first time at Chutni, the owner walked us through the menu and made some great recommendations. We decided to go with his suggestions. The food came quickly and all I can say is WOW! The food tasted amazing and had a great spice. You could tell everything had been made fresh with quality ingredients and great care taken. If you're looking for a quality, independent, family run restaurant, then Chutni is for you. We will definitely be back next time we return to York.

I will stick my neck out and say by far the best authentic halal food up North. Try the chicken Malai and Lamb dish and you will be in shock at how tasty it is. Not like the rest who use a curry base sauce and just add meat. This is seriously genuinely the best! Will go again Inshallah…
