This used to be a childhood favorite for chicken dinners. It's still among my favorites in Wichita, but maybe not the best I've had. That said, for chicken and sides with that home cooked feel you can't go wrong with Stroud's. I suggest the mashed potatoes and their amazing gravy!

Recommended to us by several Wichita natives. Excellent fried chicken. Mashed potatoes and gravy are served in separate dishes as is the other side. Everything was tasty. We went at 5.30pm and it got really busy very quickly. Service was prompt and spot on. My wife has a featured drink, the Chicken Choker. It was served in a large ceramic chicken; a remarkably unique vessel. Be prepared to wait for a table and then for your chicken. It’s worth it.

My parents have always liked Strouds, so we’ve gone for years when they come to town. Wow has this place gone down hill recently! First, the patio bricks leading into the place are getting uneven and loose enough to be really unsafe for the mostly older people we see there. Today, there was a derelict, broken bench right across from the entrance that looked like it had been left there collecting cobwebs for a while. Inside, it smelled strongly like they had an ongoing water leak and the whole place needed a good cleaning. The food was…fine. My husband’s soup was delivered barely lukewarm, and our meals were only a bit warmer. Everything needed salt and pepper, and the potatoes were soupy. They used to provide rolls (my father loves his bread), but we never got any. The worst part was the service. No one seemed to care that we were there until they were ready for us to leave. After our food was delivered, no one stopped by for a long, long time. Then it wasn’t our server, but someone trying to take our plates and leftovers. My husband had to get us extra napkins from a pile in the main room, and we were never offered refills. Through the doorway of our dining room, we saw staff constantly congregating by the bar, but even when my husband told them that the men’s room needed soap, no one did anything about it. I wished them good evening as we left, and four people just stared at me without responding. It’s a real shame how far this place has fallen. There is better chicken and WAY better service elsewhere in Wichita. I’m going to try to convince the parents to try something else next time.

Did not have a good experience here. The food was pretty good, but not really worth the price. The service was terrible. Went with a large group of people, and we arrived at 1:15 for lunch. It was nearly 4 before our meal was finished because we ended up waiting so long. Ordered a family style meal, which even when asked our waitress did not explain what that meant. Ordered a two piece chicken meal, which was a drumstick and chicken breast. Was assured it would be enough food for my wife and I to share. Ended up getting a drumstick and a wing instead. When the mistake was brought to our waitresses attention, she just acted confused and walked away. The restaurant nor the waitress made any attempt to correct the mistake and we were still charged for getting a chicken breast we never received. Both my wife and I left hungry and ended up having to stop at another restaurant for food to fill us up.

Very cool and rustic place. Looks like an old barn but updated for dining :) I recommend a dinner if you want to share, especially if you get the chicken gizzard. A hearty portion that could be shared by 4 people wanting to share. My work colleague ordered the chicken fried chicken and loved it. Save room for the cinnamon roll at the end. Friendly staff. Clean spaces, very homey and cozy. Definitely a return trip is coming soon.

Ordered take out and thankfully we checked the bag before leaving the parking lot because they missed a few items from our order. Staff was very unprofessional arguing with each other in front of customers. For the price we paid I wasn't impressed the chicken fried steak wasn't tender at all I've had better and at a better price. Everything else was ok. Place used to be really good back in the day.

Mother of God, this place can cook some chicken! The former Deep South native in me overwhelmingly approves with two chicken greased thumbs up. I thought..."hmm $18.99 for just a 3 piece meal..kind of pricey". Then I see why...the sides I got which were green beans and real mashed potatoes with country gravy were two meals in themselves. The chicken was super tender and no throwaway pieces off it, which tells me they get good quality chicken to fry. Even comes after the meal with a cinnamon roll which is in the shape of a biscuit but has incredible flavor. Service was outstanding and everyone else there (5pm on a Thursday) seemed to be enjoying their meals too. Will most definitely return to try the chicken fried steak next.

Very busy. Recommend making a reservation if you plan to stop here. Food is good. Chicken dishes are their strongpoint.

I thought it was over priced for what you get personally. The cinnamon roll that comes with the hamburger is not what I consider a cinnamon roll, it's a bisquit style with cinnamon and no icing. The menu was kinda confusing and when asking questions about it the reply was "it comes with alot of stuff" . Even when I asked for specific items it confused them and didn't come out as requested. I read the reviews and was passing thur is why I went there, the place is nice to look at but I personally wasn't amused by the food or menu....

This is sadly not the restaurant it used to be. Time for a Robert Irvine intervention. The floors are dirty, there was a distinct bad smell in the place. The air conditioner was struggling so it was very stuffy & uncomfortable with a fly or 2 by our table. When we first walked in we gave our name to a server and then she walked away. Another server came and saw the guy standing there who had not given his name yet & and seated him & his wife before us & didn’t even look at the book to see our name. So we said no big deal then we waited about 5-10 minutes before we got seated and it was another 55 minutes before we got our food and the chicken was overcooked & dry. the salads...prepackaged and limp and soggy very pale green salad. they did not have the sweet tea, so they brought us regular tea that tasted like well not tea! $2.99 for it. Unbelievable. My wife opted for water at that point so no charge for hers. We asked for boxes as soon as we were served becuz the air was stinky & warm & we had been there over an hour. We tipped our server well because you could tell he knew it was not quality food or atmosphere and kept trying. Not his fault. We feel badly for restaurants that are struggling understaffed fighting to keep going but please make some changes. This is not working for anyone.

The food here is real and made from scratch. Had the chicken fried steak and it was tasty and the sides where good as well. The service was.... well not so great, I rated 4 stars for the food alone. The hostess was arguing with another customer and was rude off and on saying things a customer shouldn't hear. Our server was just absent. One of the buss staff got our refills. Would have rated 5 stars if the staff could have been attentive and not arguing.

Thanks to Kevin & the entire team at Stroud's. In a pinch, I was looking for some place that could feed 30 - 40 people after a funeral. After talking to Kevin a weight was lifted that they could accommodate us. The food was delicious, the service was awesome & no one walked away hungry. I would highly recommend for Christmas parties as the atmosphere is great for the Holidays!!!

Everything was amazing. Chicken was fire. Potatoes were melt in your mouth. Green beans had flavor for days. The sweet tea machine was down but that’s ok. Service was so good. Cinnamon roll needs work but after all that delicious food most people Don’t even make it to that. Five star if they had sweet tea. Our waitress Rose was so cool!

They were short-handed today, and friends of the restaurant had a kiddie party, "the excuse." The maitre d', a lovely, hard working young lady was bussing, taking orders, getting us water and managing the restaurant. She was trying, hats off, but it wasn't enough to make up for the wait. Thx for the extra cinnamon rolls😉 Now the chicken, All dark meat, was incredibly bland. My thigh had a burn mark. The Mash potatoes were loose, but the gravy was not bad. The green beans had meat, but the flavor was not there. No flavor. It's been about twenty years since my last visit. I might wait another twenty to give them another try at disappointing me😞

The only reason I gave 4 stars is the intense hard work of the staff. We (party of 2) waited for a reasonable amount of time although there were lots of tables open. There were several parties of 10+ with reservations. One party of 20+ was leaving right after we were seated. The chicken was below average in flavor and was mostly overcooked. The cinnamon rolls are really dinner rolls with cinnamon sugar baked on them, not at all impressive, though very Great Depression era fair. The serving staff were very busy and really shined in their efforts. The interior is overly worn and this place really needs a dose of Restaurant Impossible, or at least a carefully planned interior update and deep cleaning. It is just a space that has seen decades of heavy traffic without down time. I would not recommend this restaurant under these circumstances. The only saving grace here is the dedication of the staff.

Start with the good. We couldn't find the entry & we've been there before, a couple of workers were in the parking lot possibly on break but they helped us find the entry. Might want to put a couple of direction arrows up. Our food was ok, service was awesome ( tall young lady with holes in her jeans very stylish ❤️) she's very good at her job, best pay her well so she doesn't get stolen away. Now for the bad. It's been years since I've been in there as I moved out of state & come back to visit so wanted to try them again. I'm not sure but I think the carpet is as old as my oldest child 35yrs. It's in desperate need of updating, it's so dirty. The tables seemed clean but that floor is rough, so bad we almost didn't want to stay. If they're not keeping something that (ALL)their customers can see right from the start cleaned up it makes one wonder what else isn't being tended too. The ceiling looks like it could drop down on folks at any moment & dirty vents. If they'd fix a few things like that they'd probably get more customers back. I'm trying to help the business, so hope they use the constructive criticism. Not sure why but my green beans we're gritty. Mashed potatoes still good, great chicken gravy & real home cooked chicken. Still not too bad 😉 just feel a bit of updating could do wonders. If you're after a real home cooked meal this is the place.

We went on Mother's Day, May 14th, 2023. We had 1 pm reservations for 10 people. We were there at 12:15. Needless to say, we did not get seated at 1. We watched many people get seated before us most saying they did not have reservations. Some in large groups. The hostess told us, she was also the manager. She kept telling us that our table was still occupied over in back section. Not sure why we had to have that "exact" table , when there was other options available. Very unorganized management! To make matters worse, this manager was quite rude to my daughter in law. We finally got seated at 1:45pm. Our waitress was a jewel. She felt so bad for the way we were spoken to and treated. The food was fantastic! I highly recommend the Chicken Fingers or Chicken Fried Steak. We made sure our waitress was tipped well. This is the first time we have ever had any issues with Strouds.

The location is sort of hard to find but the food makes up for the location. Meals are served family style with bowls of mashed potatoes and some of the best brown pan gravy you'll ever eat. It's just like Grandma use to make. They're famous for their fried chicken but the chicken fried steak, gizzards and traditional home cookin favorites do not disappoint.

The portions are generous, the food is delicious, and sides are served family-style and refilled if needed. Did i mention the cinnamon rolls? They're cinnamon sugar encrusted rolls and they are incredible (and included along with the sides!) Probably the juiciest chicken fried chicken I've ever tasted, and the chicken fried steak was perfect. They say they want to relocate the taste of 'dinner at grandmother's house' and they nailed it in all the right ways.

Great food and service! It's truly homestyle cuisine and probably the best chicken fried steak in town! I'd went for the first time, and I regret not trying it sooner. The server was hospitable, and the mashed potatoes, chicken noodle soup, and the chicken fried steak brought back memories of homecooked meals throughout my childhood. Definitely worth trying out!

The chicken was nice, tender, and juicy but that's all I can really say about it. The gravy was similar to my mom's and that so amazing to reminisce about her chicken and gravy and how she learned from her mom and how she swore she was taking that secret to the grave. Rude and dirty pool, for shame.was okay but not worth the price. Our waitress was new so she was still getting into a routine. She was really sweet but a little slow on service, at one point we had to track her down to get drink refills. Felt more like an over-priced cracker barrel.

I've had the Chicken gizzard dinner several times before and was pleased. On this visit most of the breading had fallen off the gizzards, some were luke warm but most of them were room temperature at best and they were very tough. My girlfriend had the two piece dinner, breast and wing. The breast was dry and cold, looked like it had been cooked and left sitting for awhile before being served. The wing wasn't any better. I asked for Tabasco sauce for the gizzards and I was brought some type of sauce in small plastic cup that had a strong vinegar taste. With food like this it's no wonder that the place was almost empty on a Saturday evening.

Hadn’t been to Stroud’s (3661 N. Hillside, Wichita) for quite a while since our last visit there was somewhat less than stellar. But this visit tonight showed me that they have probably solved their previous issues. We were promptly greeted when we came in and were seated with no waiting time. The meal started with a generous salad with blue cheese dressing and extra blue cheese crumbles. The chicken was crispy on the outside and deliciously juicy on the inside. Perfectly done!! The mashed potatoes were creamy and wonderfully tasty. The gravy was like Mom makes, smooth and delicious with crunchy little bits of amazing flavor in it. The green beans were amazingly done with pieces of ham and onions in them. Our waitress, Jonista, was outstanding, always smiling, frequently checking with us to make sure everything was ok and keeping our drinks full. Let me just say this…I have eaten at the old Sander’s Court in Corbin, Kentucky, many times as a youth and I do believe the owner of that establishment, one Col. Harland Sanders (the originator of Kentucky Fried Chicken) would have been quite happy with this meal!!

This use to be my favorite place to eat fried chicken but the last 4 or 5 times we ate there it was so very very well done and didn't matter if it was chicken or pork chops. I hope it gets better

Was here in Wichita for two weeks ate at many different restaurants decided to eat this one of my last day here it was the best restaurant I eat at while was here. The food remind me of being back home eat my mom‘s home cooking and great service. If I had chosen this earlier in the time I was here I probably would’ve ate there several times during the two week. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to come back here with my work.

Was so looking forward to trying this place on our trip to Wichita. Was disappointed. We called in our order and told to be there by 4:15 pm and it wasn't ready till 4:30....OK, I get it. Took it back to our friends house to eat the 4 person chicken family meal. The chicken was really dry and overcooked. The sides were excellent... mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans. The cinnamon rolls weren't the best....dry also. Just really disappointed.....maybe it was an off night for the kitchen??

  • 5/5 Brent S. 1 year ago on Google
We usually get their 3 breast of chicken dinner. We do the share dinner so we get unlimited sides of mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. I love their chicken! So juicy and tasty! Their cinnamon rolls are very good as well! I was so stuffed after eating all that great food. My belly was very happy! 😁👍

By far the worst experience we’ve ever had dining out. Not sure what was worse.. the staff, the food or the atmosphere.. I don’t even know where to begin. This place has changed tremendously over the last few years & definitely not for the better. Food wasn’t even that good & was way overpriced for what you get. I don’t normally write reviews because I try & give everyone a chance or the benefit of the doubt, but this place definitely needed to be addressed. Based off the reviews, we were really looking forward to trying it. After the experience we had, we will never be back. After talking with some other customers, they felt the same way we did. Glad we weren’t the only ones & I’m sure we won’t be the last. It’s sad to see a business that used to be so good, go down hill so drastically over the years.

We made a reservation because we know they get busy during the weekends however we showed up and were told it would be 10 to 15 minutes and at 30 minutes I went to check on the hold up and they said it could be another 10 minutes before we got seated and the hostess said she would have to see if a waitress could have us in her section or not. Once seated the food came out fast and wasn’t bad.

  • 4/5 JillRenee 2 years ago on Google
Classic fried chicken, it was amazing. They are short staffed, expect a wait even during off hours. They didn't have dinner rolls. The gravy was super peppered, we left it there. But, they are trying hard and our food was great minus the gravy.
